Japanese Hotels That Defy Their Reputation

"Suiden Terrasse is set on the Shonai plain, a particularly fertile area of land irrigated by snowmelt runoff from neighboring peaks. Guests are in for quiet stays, with an opportunity to contemplate the slow movement of seasons, as the Suiden is surrounded by working rice fields. The hotel takes its cues from the crop, with architect Shigeru Ban’s thoughtful nods to its cultivation informing its thoroughfares and common areas." - Mark Fedeli

We made our reservations the day before our arrival, and got the last two rooms available. We still got a great room rate using Trip.com. Upon our arrival we were looking all around the building for the parking lot, and as others reviewers have noted, it is located about 100 yards/meters across the street. But they will allow you to drop your luggage off at the front door. The staff was extremely attentive and polite, we worked with Mr. Kino, who was most outgoing and helpful. He check us in, explained all the details of the accommodations, then escorted us to our rooms. And because I was using crutches to walk, he even brought our luggage to our rooms. He also issued us a handicap access parking pass, which was much appreciated. I inquired as to if a massage therapist was available, and he replied that they had a massage service that would come right to my room. He made the reservation and payment was made through the hotel, so that I did not have to make a separate payment. It was an excellent and professional massage service that they arranged. It was so relaxing that I never got to the onsen, so I am not able to provide any comments or review of that, although the pictures and description makes it seem amazing. Overall it was a very pleasant hotel to stay at, although it is not located in the city itself, and is on the outskirts, but we found many restaurants for dinner within minutes of the hotel. Check-out was very quick and efficient. Thanks for the pleasant stay.

The car park is free and very big, so it’s very easy to find space. There’s a short walk to the entrance along-side a rice field. Check in was quick, friendly and informative. The rooms are small but comfortable. There is coffee, but no tea or creamer for the coffee. The laundry room is clean and functional. The onsen is modern, clean and well equipped. There is a relaxing library space with lots of beautiful books, and a space to read with a nice view.

Nice hotel with beautiful wooden architecture and a very relaxing feel. The onsen is huge with modern facilities. The hotel is quiet and convenient to drive to with free parking. It’s a bit out of town but feels like an oasis of calm. Would definitely stay here again.

First of all, car parking is 100m far from entrance. Entrance car pit has Only 2-3 cars can stay at entrance for dropping belongings. Car driver need to walk long to enter hotel. There is a roof around half of that way, it seems functional, But that roof design has no art design. So walking is not so fun. Queuing in a long and had to wait 30 minutes to complete the check-in process. Reception at the counter was 1 by 1 (no parallel entry) . I wonder if they are making people wait there for the sake of atmosphere ? Idk at all. The ceiling corridor and room are 2.5-2.6m high, that’s average. Inside of guest rooms was pretty clean. But materials are not gorgeous. Seems no big difference between a recent Japanese home. Showing the big nature is most important for the visitors, but the window has many rain fall foot printing especially corridors. The most disappointed are cleanses of the window. And toilet is independent, but very very small

I am not sure it is really worth for the pricing. The architecture is “professional” but not so optimized for customers. There are too many stairs from the room to the dining or even within it. The location is special as we need a taxi to go to anywhere. I did not try the French dinner only available in the hotel, but one good thing is that there is a tonkatsu restaurant in 10 minutes walk.

My biggest mistake of this trip to Yamagata is to book this hotel. It's a good hotel but it's in the middle of nowhere. You will want to stay around the city of Yamagata province which is also called Yamagata city just so you can get to famous tourist spots. However this is 4 hours away from all of these. I had to book another hotel so I can stay 1 day in the city when I wanted to visit these places and the traveling time just completely made me exhausted. It took like 1 day to go to a place and 1 day to go back. It was so terrible, I was crying. This place is closed to Shonai airport not Yamagata airport so I also had to book another flight from Shonai. I wasted so much money for transportation. It was such a terrible experience. However the hotel is incredibly beautiful with smart design in everything. I loved the onsen very much. If it was just a vacation/restcation for relaxing purpose or isolate yourself from the human word, it's the best choice for you. Since its in the middle of the endless rice field, there is nothing to eat except for paying very high price to eat at the hotel's restaurant. And the food was just okay. The beauty of this hotel was like a trap. Its like I was blind from its beauty and couldn't see all other disavantages.

This hotel allows you to enjoy the leisurely flow of time, with the rice paddies of the Shonai Plain as a backdrop. Its location in the middle of the rice paddies offers a sense of nostalgia and healing to Japanese people, whose staple food is rice. The wooden structure makes extensive use of glass, meaning that light, the rice paddies, and the plains are always in view. The rice paddy scenery changes with the time of day, so you will never tire of looking. At night, the books in the two libraries and the sake bar will eliminate the need to turn your eyes to the TV or smartphone. The attached restaurant serves ingredients from Shonai, and you will be surprised at how delicious the wild vegetables are. A wonderful hotel where you can experience the DNA of the Japanese people.

i loved it so much! this place is perfect to just enjoy the scenery and weather! the onsen was perfect! take note that there’s nothing much around the area and it’s recommended to drive instead! the interior of the hotel was lovely and i loved the smell of wood everywhere! i throughly enjoyed staying here. the walls are abit hallow can hear other people closing door loudly, talking really loud etc.. the corridors are abit cold, and i found that the G area was really cold! (onsen/gym/sake block) however that could be due to the renovations! i would stay again if i had the chance to!
