Workers Are Trying to Buy Portland’s Shoofly Vegan Bakery After Walking Out | Eater Portland

"A popular wholesale vegan bakery founded in 2016 and known as a reliable source of vegan pastries for many Portland coffee shops — including Guilder, Stumptown Coffee, Case Study Coffee, and Caffe Umbria — the business is particularly renowned for its giant vegan cinnamon rolls, pecan sticky buns, and savory and sweet hand pies in offbeat flavors like vegan cheesesteak; its 11th Avenue cafe opened in 2021. After the original owner left in February 2025 following a careful search for a successor, the bakery’s new owner took over and, in the three months since, staff report major operational changes and growing dissatisfaction. The primary motive for the May 2 walkout was delayed paychecks: nine workers say pay was first delayed on April 18 with no notice, some received checks as late as April 21, and when workers had not received pay on the morning of May 2, the 12 bakers and baristas working that day made the unanimous decision to walk out (a decision later ratified by the rest of the employees); workers later returned to find the locks had been changed, and employees report that some received pay on May 3 or May 4, and some as late as May 5. The owner acknowledged the delayed paychecks in an April 21 email to employees reviewed by Eater Portland, saying, “I just wanted to reach out to apologize to those affected by the late paycheck this past week. I want to assure you that this will never happen again. I’m updating the process to make sure this issue doesn’t happen again.” Workers also describe ambitious-but-unfinished management plans: staffers say the owner purchased an additional fridge and several panini machines to add panini service to lunch but the service never launched — “He bought us a whole bunch of expensive equipment for it, but we didn’t have any staffing to support actually doing that, so it’s all just been kind of sitting there going to waste,” says Michael Barr-Brainard, a wholesale baker — and that proposals to add evening service similarly never materialized. Employees further allege the owner threatened to completely cut the wholesale program, a move that would lay off most bakers; shortly after the walkout the owner emailed wholesale clients saying the bakery was ending wholesale operations, a development that alarmed staff because the wholesale program is both the business’s core and the main way many Portlanders access its pastries. In response, workers point to strong community support and organized relief efforts: “We’ve had a huge outpouring of support from our wholesale partners,” says Justin Hillsmith, a baker acting as the workers’ media contact, and the bakery’s wholesale supervisor, Kelley Bayles, started a GoFundMe to compensate lost wages and potentially purchase the business or start a worker-owned wholesale bakery; as of May 9 the fundraiser had reached nearly $10,000. Workers also launched an Instagram page, @workers_for_shoofly, to coordinate fundraising and outreach and scheduled two fundraisers — a bake sale and cake silent auction at vegan cafe Memento Mori from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, and another at the worker-owned bar Worker’s Tap from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 11. On May 7 workers say they briefly met with the owner about a possible purchase and that he “basically asked us for a number,” says Hillsmith; workers are currently preparing an offer because, as Hillsmith puts it, “We want to continue having the community that we’ve always had.” “We just want to keep us baking together,” he adds. “I love my coworkers and I want to keep doing what we’re doing, and not let what Shannon spent nine years doing fade into irrelevance.”" - Katherine Chew Hamilton

The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes Near Ladd’s Addition in Portland | Eater Portland

"Shoofly’s vegan treats are carried at coffee shops and restaurants throughout Portland, but Ladd’s Additioners know they all taste that much better in the cozy café on the ground floor of the brick edificed Ford Building. The weekend brunch menu is available Thursday through Saturday, featuring vegan biscuits and gravy and vegan egg sandwiches on cornmeal biscuits. Sweet treats will vary by the day, but cakes, pies, cookie trays, and other desserts are available to order." - Nathan Williams

Google
Another great one in Portland! If you know me, you know I will search for a good vegan bakery. These sweet treats did not disappoint! Customer service was okay. Parking was a bit difficult. I'd probably stop by again and give this spot another chance if I'm ever in Portland.

Google
This place is unbelievable! My partner and I stopped in for coffees and saw the pastries lined up at the front of the counter and could not resist! We ended up getting two biscuit breakfast sandwiches, as well as a lemon ricotta pastry and a cinnamon roll. Not only was everything absolutely delicious, but it was truly impossible to tell that it was vegan! You can really tell the bakers here take a lot of pride in their pastry making, and it showed in everything that we ordered. Also, the coffee was very good, and I walked away with a cold brew refill, which the barista at the front gave to me on the house, I thought that was a really nice thing to do and appreciated it. Shoofly vegan bakery and café you guys rock and the next time my partner and I are in Portland we will absolutely be stopping here, probably more than once or twice!

Google
Wow! Their baked goods are excellent! We had a blackberry scone and a strawberry cheesecake danish with two soy lattes. The pastries were amazing, and the coffees were great. On a later day, at Jet Black Coffee, we had a Shoofly cinnamon roll and a Shoofly berry muffin, both also outstanding. The Shoofly cafe was spacious and charming and also had some sidewalk tables where we sat with our dog. The restroom was upstairs and seemed to be shared with other businesses, but it was nice and clean. The people working there were nice and friendly and gave us helpful recommendations. Can't wait to try more of their delicious stuff.

Google
Looking for a place to meet a friend for coffee? Try Shoofly. I suspect even non-vegans will be impressed. While admittedly not the easiest location to find parking, it's worth it. Vegans rejoice over the options! I had Mom's Dutch Apple Cake to pair with my London Fog. Delicious, great texture, and importantly not overly sweet. I'll be back.

Google
Incredible vegan recreations of some classic lunchbox treats (oatmeal cream pies!), Strawberry Funfetti and Mom’s Applesauce cake- with an assortment of savory hand pies, quiche and a few made to order brunch options. 1/2 and 1/2 = Oat Milk : ) Speilman’s bagels with Tofutti cream cheese, and a solid assortment of scones muffins and cookies round out the grab and goes. Check out the art on the way to the restrooms too!

Google
Spacious cafe with delicious foods including some pretty unique sweets! Really liked the Philly cake with the limited time raspberry filling. Great service. A good amount of seating. Some folks were working here on their computers, so this seems like a good study/work cafe. An easy 5/5.

Google
I sincerely hope the workers of Shoofly are able to buy this bakery from the new owner and avoid running it into the ground. Their baked goods are fantastic and the workers are so kind. Nobody makes a vegan sticky bun like Shoofly does. I've never had a vegan scone that rivaled any non vegan butter filled scone until I had one from them. They truly have taken the craft of baking and perfected a new way of making these delicious treats. I wish you all so much luck in this endeavor! D@mn the man! ✊

Google
A cool place to get some sweets and pastries. The treats here are pretty good, especially the mocha cupcake. The chocolate chip cookie was also delicious. This place is vegan friendly, but you probably can't taste the difference at all.

Yelp
First: I'm not affiliated at all with Shoofly or Cat Scratch Co-Op. I'm just a Portlander who cares about fair labor practices. Shoofly was great! The original owner was fantastic. New ownership has withheld pay from their employees and, according to Eater PDX, stopped doing wholesale (which was a HUGE part of this business) after a number of other bad business decisions. From where I'm sitting, it seems like the new owner mismanaged the business into the ground and then stopped paying their people. And when they went on strike (as is their right under the NLRB) the owner retaliated by cancelling all of their wholesale. The workers were going to try and purchase the biz to keep it running, but the new owner hasn't been operating in good faith. Good News! The talented bakers and baristas and delivery driver are doing their own thing now! Cat Scratch Co-Op! Check them out and offer some support with a follow on IG or chip into the GFM while it's active. Yelp
Vegan brunch bliss! S'mores cupcakes, flaky hand pies, biscuit sandwiches, and gooey pecan sticky buns. The service is quick and friendly, though the space is more functional than cozy. Street parking available nearby, but it can be tight during peak hours.

Joe A.

Yelp
Note: went by today and they were closed due to a labor dispute. Hope it gets resolved quickly. Love this place. The service is good, the pastries are delicious, the space is open and airy. Love the breakfast sandwich/biscuit. Great selection. Good merch too.

Yelp
I found Shoofly through Reddit because I was looking for a blackout cake for a birthday. The order was easy to do, thanks to the website. I put the order on Tuesday for Saturday pick up. The pick up was easy and I was able to inspect the cake before leaving the shop. The shop smelled incredible and the staff were friendly. I loved the experience. The cake was shared with a group of 10 and everybody gave it high ratings. Definitely coming back again!

Yelp
Walking in, this is a lovely open restaurant with lots of wood and rustic charm. The pastry cases are filled to the brim with mouthwatering yumminess! The service was fast and friendly. The coffee was hot and full of flavor. We had the cinnamon rolls which were moist and the blackberry scones had perfect crumb. The coffee was served in chunky mugs and the pastries were served on a variety of beautifully mismatched china. The entire asthetic was comfortable chic, perfect!
google avatar

Janelle J.

Yelp
Welcoming atmosphere with various seating inside, this cafe offers multiple pastries and drinks to choose from. I ordered an iced matcha- really good! Friendly and fast service as well. Would come back!

Yelp
Here are updates from my second visit: I got there two hours before closing on a Saturday and most of their pastries were sold out--that's exactly how it should be based on how tasty their sweets and savory pastries are! I wasn't disappointed by the goodies leftover. In fact, I ordered a raspberry jam lady finger cookie (the last one), a rosemary chocolate cookie, and a blueberry muffin. Let me just tell you that the cookies were delicate and moist. Each bite was delicious, leaving me always wanting and craving for more cookies. The fragrance of each cookie matched its description and I just love how the texture was delicious. Pumpkin spice latte was also delicious and served in the mug. It made me excited for fall even though it's still considered summer, but I can't wait to cozy up with more lattes. Excellent customer service as always.

Yelp
I love Shoofly so much. Been eating their goods since I first tried it at the St. Johns Farmer's Market years ago and then searching all over town for which coffee shops sold them. So happy to be able to go into their very spacious, clean brick-and-mortar and pick from a large variety of options. Everyone is super nice and helpful. Last November I ordered a custom cake for my partner's birthday. They killed it. The communication was so easy. Pick-up was seamless. I will definitely use them again for any custom cakes. I just love Shoofly so much.

Yelp
Everything is vegan!!! Beautiful options, nice setting to eat in or take out. Purchased several things for our birthday girl with dairy and egg intolerance. Have also had their products at RLVNT coffee in Vancouver.
google avatar

Yelp
I really like Shoofly's baked goods, customer service, and the atmosphere of their location on SE Division. Parking isn't easy in this area (avoid getting stuck behind a train on 11th!) but once you find a spot, many of them free, you're good. My recommendation is to spend a day coworking here, gorging yourself on delicious vegan pastries!

Brandon R.

Yelp
Original owner sold it, new owner ruined it in 60 days. Workers revolted and walked out. it was a great bakery full of delicious things, now it's dead. This is why we can't have nice things -
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Needed a vegan dessert for Thanksgiving so I came here to get the Dutch Apple Cake. Super cute place, great customer service, and the cake was fantastic. I'm not vegan, but I'll be back.
google avatar

Jasmine G.

Yelp
I recently came across Shoofly bakery, and I have to say this place is such a gem. There is plenty of space to sit down and enjoy your food and/or coffee. The staff here were extremely friendly and made great suggestions for my boyfriend and I to try out! I will definitely be returning to try more.
google avatar

Ciara W.

Yelp
Very delicious vegan pastry! Friendly staff too. Dropped in without a plan and found everything we needed.
google avatar

Jan V.

Yelp
The behavior by the manager was quite rude. Also, the people under her were unhappy. Mediocre food, additionally. A bad show!
google avatar

Natasha L.

Yelp
We stumbled on Shoofly Bakery a few months ago. The coffee and pastries we got were delicious so I decided to order my husband's birthday cake from there. We ordered via email, which was easy, staff responded promptly to each email. The cake was delicious! We are so excited to have such a wonderful go to vegan bakery in Portland. We'll definitely go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great birthday cake. Service was quick and nice decorations on cake exactly as our request.

Yelp
Service: everyone here is lovely - 5 stars Ambiance: easy to sit and enjoy the music and a conversation - 5 stars Food: huge disappointment - 0 stars. I used to LOVE Shoofly and always looked forward to coming here when I lived out of town. However, something has changed. Today I had a piece of cherry pie. The filling was good, but the bottom crust and the crust in between the weave on top was raw. I gave the pie back and asked for a cinnamon roll instead. Bite by bite, the dough had either no flavor at all or an overpowering taste of yeast, but didn't have any cinnamon flavor. It was doughy and heavy. The icing on top had no particular flavor just sweet. I didn't finish it. The last time I was here I ordered the biscuits and gravy, but the gravy was so salty that my mouth burned after a few bites. There are few bakeries in Portland that offer such a wide variety of vegan options (or any at all) that I'm really hoping that Shoofly's quality improves again soon.

Terra _.

Yelp
Great bakery, even for a vegan place. The pastries were delicious and loved the breakfast sandwich as well. I will definitely be going back to get another coffee.
google avatar

Robyn A.

Yelp
Seriously love the savory and sweet options. The breakfast Sammie is to die for, so are the cake slices and oatmeal cream pie
google avatar

Rayne M.

Yelp
Just solid vegan breakfast items I can see why they're sold at other cafes too, I got a few options and loved them all. Plus a great latte- say no more!
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
A pretty cool bakery with some delicious treats. It's vegan, but I can't even tell the difference. The mocha cupcake was extremely good and was the perfect way to end a lunch. The cookies were also well made and delicious.
google avatar

Rachelle R.

Yelp
This is probably going to turn into 5 stars! We got carrot cake from here to my work the other day for a coworkers birthday. I have no complaints. The vegan carrot cake was moist and I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure what the frosting was but it was savory and paired very nicely with the cake. I have to go in person and try more so I can give a better review!

Yelp
You know, it's kinda hard Just to knead the dough today The batter's kinda lumpy But Shoo bakes it anyway Shoo may not have shiitake Shoo may not have chanterelle But everything Shoo lacks Shoo makes up in Streusel So don't debate, 5 Star straight You know Shoo knows how to decorate Gotta Lime Curd fill, to keep it real For you no whey, it's Sprinkle Cakes So if you don't bake, just carbohydrate At least that you'll know you can always Blame it on your date The Vegan Bakery Hey, hey, do that Cannoli! Give it to me, Cherry! Uh huh, uh huh! And all the homies say Pie in the sky for a Shoofly Shoo needs some cool tunes For this review to sing Portland's kinda punk So Shoo's playing The Offspring Now cruisin' in the café, Shoo make 'em wear a mask But if you breakfast tray, you'll have to multitask Now Shoo's frosting up a message, sweet quotations You ask for triple layers, Shoo writes "You're #1" Shoo says you might Blackout or you might Mint Chip But if you Rocky Road, then Shoo the dopest trip Give me Marionberry! Uh huh, uh huh! And all the girlies sing Lullaby for a Shoofly
google avatar

Darren Y.

Yelp
Wow this place is goood. Staff is super friendly and helpful in recommending pastry to try out. Had the Pennsylvania Dutch cake. Apparently it is traditionally made with a crapload of butter so a vegan version is great! Will definitely come again
google avatar

Greg H.

Yelp
Come here for the coffee! The pastries and cookies were impressive enough, as I ordered the blueberry muffin and a cookie, but the pumpkin spice latte was on another level! Seeing the beautiful foam design on top of the drink, served in one of the cutest cups I have ever seen, the experience was transformative and a place I would return to. I suggest returning on a Monday for the rotating all-vegan menu, as the options at Shoofly are matched.

Jay H.

Yelp
Service was a bit cold and the drip coffee tasted more like water than coffee. I don't think I'll be back!
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Impressive variety. Absolutely delicious foods. Can't recommend them enough.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I was surprised I hadn't left a review, but everything I've had is super tasty and the perfect balance of sweetness, richness, and heartiness. The staff are all super friendly, and the space is super cute. I think my favorites are their scones and pies. My friend and I like to grab snacks and coffee before going on fun walks in the neighborhood. Always a great spot for an awesome treat!

Jessica C.

Yelp
We are new to the area and had heard of this place. We ended up stoping in since we were in the area. We ordered a small Carmel latte, sticky bun, pizza hand pie and my fiance got a can beer. Pro's- The folks there are very nice and the ambiance is really calm. The seats aren't crammed in so there is enough space between tables. Con's- The person who made my latte originally made me the wrong one but made my correct one after that. The sticky bun I got really needed to be warmed up but I wasn't offered to have it warmed. The can of beer my fiancé got he said was pretty good but he said the pizza pie was not good. The "meat" inside he said just was not good (we regularly eat vegan food so I've have tried plenty). We both agree that the drinks, while just ok, we would suggest. The food however is definitely a pass. Another just kind of SMALL inconvenience is that they don't have ( or didn't have at the time) cup sleeve's for their small coffee's. I just had to wait until it was a bit cooler to hold it from the middle. Again not a huge deal but just more of a slight inconvenience. Overall, I don't think we would come back.
google avatar

Marilyn E.

Yelp
We haven't managed to make it into the bakery directly but they sell their goods at oracle coffee as well and I have to say every single thing we have tried has been delicious. They make such good vegan pastries! Quite the broad selection too. When we had stopped through they had adjusted their hours so unfortunately we couldn't try them yet but we will be back in the future I'm sure.
google avatar

Jared K.

Yelp
Great, vegan treats and friendly service! I just wished they were open on Sunday. That's my only complaint. ;(
google avatar

Kailey O.

Yelp
From the food to the service, I've never had a bad experience. My only sad experiences is when my favorite seasonal items run out. But even then, they are always swapped out for other delicious goodies. My wife and I try to go every Saturday for their incredible weekend menu.
google avatar

Edward O.

Yelp
I love this place. A lot of options, I had a blueberry compote cake that was amazing. I also like the staff, I hope they are paid really well
google avatar

Jenna T.

Yelp
I very impressed with my visit to Shoofly! The service was great (and I asked a lot of questions) and the seating area is very spacious and open. I had one of the best chais I've ever had and my cookie was exquisite. Will definitely be going back!
google avatar

Crystal E.

Yelp
Ordered a Lemon Curd cake with cream cheese frosting (add gold stars :-)) for a birthday event and it was soooo good! truly one of the best vegan cakes I have had the pleasure to eat. I also got a half dozen of the philly cakes (they are amazing with a large glass of almond milk) and we tried a couple of the stromboli which were also very yummy. Service was quick and friendly. I was in and out in no time. I will definitely be getting future event cakes from here! Since we have many non-vegans in our life it's so nice to share food they think is amazing tasting also. People were wow'd by the flavor and my parents were only too happy to be sent home with extra cake and a couple Philly's!

Tina T.

Yelp
I recently placed an order for a dozen cupcakes for my roommate's birthday. I emailed them several days in advance and was told that I could choose a max of three flavors per dozen- I picked chocolate mint, tiramisu, and lemon pistachio (a seasonal flavor). As always, they were very helpful, kind and professional and my roommate was pleasantly surprised when he saw the cupcakes. Despite neither of us being vegan, we love the treats and coffee at Shoofly and enjoy seeing the interesting seasonal flavors they have to offer!
google avatar

Yelp
Shoofly is great. I miss being able to come here now that I don't live in Portland. The reality of it is this is one of the few places in Portland where you can't find something better elsewhere. I'm going to keep searching though. I imagine shoofly on the up and up so come check it out. Recently, I tried all the cupcakes and they were all unique and super tasty. Everything is good here though and worth trying at least once.

Isaiah C.

Yelp
Food is amazing! My wife and I visited from out of town and we picked this place based on reviews and were not disappointed. There wasn't a single item we didn't like, but my favorite was the oatmeal cream pie. I dream of the day I get to have another one! Maybe they can ship it to me back in Nevada? Either way, stop in and try anything!

Victoria N.

Yelp
It's a cozy place to rest and get a drink. I've never disliked any of the coffee specials I've gotten. The sweet options are really good, the savory options are just okay- matter of taste though because my mom loves them.

Zeya K.

Yelp
Medium good! I got a chai and a bagel with cream cheese. Kinda stingy on the cream cheese. Would be cute spot to study.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Wowee! Super nice staff. The pastries are so good and so fresh. The smell of cinnamon fills the whole Ford building with yummy goodness!
google avatar

L W.

Yelp
I have been looking for a fluffy, tasty cinnamon roll that is vegan and not overly sweet. I also got their sticky bun and scone. I couldn't find a flaw with them if I tried. I am beyond grateful I found shoofly bakery! I will be back for their array of vegan, gluten free delicious baked goods. Parking is difficult but it's not impossible.

Larry R.

Yelp
Tried another cupcake "Mexican Hot Chocolate" - very good, rich and sweet but not too much (like the Chocolate Torte my mom liked). I thought Mexican referred to a darker chocolate, and it did have marshmallows. Maybe someone's sense of humor, but hot apparently referred to spicy! Luckily I had a beer too.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing bakery, i can't say enough kind things about Shoofly Bakery. Needed to order a birthday cake for my partner pretty lady minute and they made one that was beautiful, delicious, and a great price. Will definitely be returning for future celebrations!
google avatar

Lia L.

Yelp
Best vegan bakery ever, highly recommend to anyone vegan or not! Tried everything and they don't have a single good I didn't like and that's coming from someone who is very particular when it comes to baked goods
google avatar

Michele H.

Yelp
Bakery caught my eye and especially the pie on the sign. No pie available on Wednesday. Ok, I decided to try a cupcake. Who doesn't like cupcakes?! I was given a mask and my cupcake and found a table in a corner while waiting for my son at theater camp. I took a photo of the pretty plate holding my cupcake to share with all my friends and family. Just as I was taking my very last bite of my cupcake a waiter 20 feet from my table, behind a counter yelled at me. "EXCUSE ME, IF YOU ARE GOING TO EAT INSIDE WE HAVE TO SEE YOUR VACCINATION CARD." I looked up with fork in hand, mouth open with my last bite of cupcake. Awkward silence as everyone stares at me. Hmmmm what to do since I wasn't TOLD this prior AND I am already done. I decided the tactless rude approach from the waiter, who could have easily approach me discreetly with this new rule ( to me) should be addressed. I emptied my dishes in the bin, took out my vax card; every line filled with vaccines to boosters and approach the counter. As I showed her my card she thanked me and I smiled. She was surprised to see my smile and I left. It's one thing to keep a virus at bay but it's another to make a customer, while doing so, feel singled out, awkward & embarrassed.

Adam L.

Yelp
Great vegan baked goods, typical pretentious service staff found all around Portland. It's unfortunate cuz I'd love to go here more but the unhelpful nature of the staff is off putting. Oh well
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
Amazing sweet and savory items! I've tried the sticky bun, strawberry shortcake scone, and biscuits and mushroom gravy on separate occasions and loved them all! Friendly staff. Just an all-around fav spot to walk to on weekend mornings. Thanks for being such a great spot in PDX!!
