How ShopRite Turned a Canned Food Sale Into a Cultural Touchstone | Eater

"Begun as a cooperative of struggling grocers in Newark in the mid-1940s and rolled out as a store brand in 1951, this regional supermarket chain turned a once-modest January promotion into a multigenerational ritual: the Can Can sale, launched in 1971 to boost slow post-holiday traffic. Its animated commercials — originally featuring a cartoon Frenchman and cancan dancers kicking to Offenbach’s “Infernal Gallop” — and an earworm jingle embedded the sale in family routines across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, prompting shoppers to pile crates of canned goods and stock pantries with bargains (one writer recalls buying 12 Tuttarossa whole peeled tomatoes for $10 and filling carts with tuna, garbanzos, and cannellini). Over time the event expanded from house-brand cans to national brands, added a July edition, and updated its advertising (moving from live dancers to animated or everyday-customer spots and retiring the dancers in 2018), a creative evolution the company frames as refreshes while competitors still study the sale’s sway over customers and vendors. For many, the promotion is as much about nostalgia, family comfort, and practical savings as it is about deals — a ritual that reliably draws communities to sidewalks of haphazardly stacked tins each January (and again in July)." - Mike Diago

I am extremely disappointed with the ongoing issues I’ve experienced at the ShopRite in Elizabeth, particularly with the curbside pickup service. The attached photo shows the state of the parking lot as I was pulling in for my order — a sight I’ve encountered more than once, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. The carts are poorly managed, blocking spaces and even making contact with the vehicle to my right, which is simply unacceptable. Additionally, it’s become a common problem for other customers to park in curbside pickup spots, leaving those of us who are there to collect our groceries either waiting for a spot or driving in circles. This lack of organization and consideration is incredibly frustrating. ShopRite in Elizabeth needs to address these issues and improve the overall experience.

Do not do home delivery from this place or maybe whomever is responsible for the staff should look in to lack of understanding schedules. I place my order 9:44am for a delivery window of 2:00-3:00 pm. Received order fulfilled text at 1:59pm.. Had to call at 3:15pm as no update was sent about any delays.. Was told “Oh it is still here waiting for the driver”.. I was place on hold and magically tracking notification is receive stating delivery at 3:45pm.. So clearly they are unable to function without the customer being involved. So much for convenience. As of 3:29pm. It only reflect Confirmed but not yet picked up.

Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Unacceptable Treatment at Your Store Dear Store Manager / Customer Service Department, I am writing to express my deep disappointment and frustration following an unacceptable experience at your store this morning, where I spent approximately one hundred dollars. While I understand and respect the need for security measures such as locking certain pharmacy items, the behavior I encountered went far beyond reasonable policy. After I requested assistance to unlock a deodorant case, the employee refused to hand me the item and insisted on escorting me to the checkout counter. This action was not only humiliating but completely inappropriate for a paying customer. I have shopped at numerous stores across New Jersey — including many ShopRite locations — and have never been subjected to such disrespectful and suspicious treatment. Locking high-theft items is understandable; treating honest customers like criminals is not. Your employee’s actions created an environment of mistrust and embarrassment, which is entirely unacceptable. Moreover, when I questioned the security personnel, I received inconsistent and vague explanations regarding your store policies. Either your employees are misinformed, or they are selectively enforcing rules in a way that may suggest bias, discrimination, or profiling based on a customer’s appearance. This possibility is extremely serious and deeply concerning. Let me be very clear: if your company truly values its customers, this practice must be addressed immediately. No one should be made to feel degraded or singled out while shopping. If preventing theft is a concern, there are countless ways to do so without mistreating loyal customers. I demand a full explanation of your policies regarding locked items, an investigation into this incident, and the steps you will take to ensure no other customer is subjected to such behavior. I expect a prompt and serious response to this complaint.

Thank You to Manny in the seafood department. I'm grateful for his customer service. He cuts the salmon just right!

Monica is always clutch. Whenever I have trouble finding an item she responds with concise information. She is always a help and one can tell she enjoys helping others. She deserves all the praise in the world.

I recently had a disappointing experience at the fish counter with an employee named Rob. I specifically requested a whole red snapper with nothing cut off, as I enjoy eating the fins. Despite my clear instructions, Rob proceeded to remove them and insisted I shouldn’t be eating them. When I asked for the fish to be replaced, he became noticeably unprofessional and argumentative, right in front of other customers. I found his behavior to be completely inappropriate and have since filed a formal complaint with the manager. I hope this matter is taken seriously and addressed accordingly, as such conduct is unacceptable in a customer-facing role.

I stopped by this place when i was travelling in New jersey. This place is stacked up with lot of veggies fruits and daily groceries.. Really huge and clean too. It would have been nice if this place had self checkout and freshly brewed coffee

Google
At first I thought I was being given the wrong cold cuts by the deli but it seems like whenever they think they can get away with it they will give you store brand ham/salami/cheese and charge you boars head or whatever brand prices you pick just to be more profitable. I has happen to me so often that I finally witnessed today what they do. Today only 1 employee was on the deli working and I seen her grab the boars head ham but also had a diff brand by her. I thought maybe it was someone else’s cut or something until I got home and realized. This happens to me almost half of the time and it’s ridiculous already. I can notice and taste the difference.

Yelp
Huge ShopRite and feel like they always have everything I want in stock! Great location in Elizabeth and always have a great selection!

David R.

Yelp
I went in there around noon on Saturday and put in an order for cold cuts at the automated kiosk by the deli counter. An hour and a half later it still wasn't ready. I went home, made some banana bread, then drove back to the store. Around 3:30 I managed to talk a guy behind the counter into filling my order. At 6:30 pm the following Tuesday I got an alert informing me that my deli order was ready. I've been told Seabra provides decent deli service. This place sucks.

Belinda S.

Yelp
Such a joke at 240pm in the afternoon on a Tuesday they have 2 registers open lines down the aisles & 3 open for self check out. Guess they are all hanging out in the break room.

Yelp
Just finished restocking the household groceries. Everything seemed to be in stock that was on my list and you could see the grocers were constantly restocking the isles. Most of the isles are neat and easy to find exactly what you are looking for. The cashier Karen at the checkout was very nice, she even helped us bag up the groceries which you don't see them do much anymore since most stores have stopped using plastic bags. It's mostly nice and neat inside the store usually. This is my main go to for shopping for my food.

Karen S.

Yelp
This is disgusting! Do they ever clean these ??? I go here (eliz nj shoprite) often..But now only for dire emergency ! I hope this helps corporates to get some employees to help clean instead of chitchatting,,,

Estee A.

Yelp
Looks like they finally finished the remodel, looking fancy Shoprite. Great selection of items and produce! Gotta love those sales. Employees were helpful when I inquired if all the hummus they had was in one section- indeed they are right by the deli. Why don't they have the back to nature thin mint cookies tho?
google avatar

Gilberto P.

Yelp
Helpful and friendly staff not to mention quality food ... and lots of choices on grocery items and organized

Yelp
Shoprite of Elizabeth for the win! I have been looking for distilled water all over the place, so I decided to call around for it. I got in touch with someone at this location and they said they had it! Yayyyyy! I ran right over and was able to grab the limit of 2 gallons. They had a system for the checkout line so people can be apart. I went to the express line and was out right away. But low and behold I dropped one of the gallons and it bursts all over ‍! The security was so nice about it and got someone right over to clean it and told me go get abother one. Good shoping experience today!

James H.

Yelp
Why does this deli Dept give you the ends of cold cuts. Especially the ones that are pre cut and go. I used to work for a grocery store and these beds were left for shoppers who wanted to feed their pets. Maybe a call to the health department will change things

Merah L.

Yelp
I don't like the way the store looks anymore. It's starting to look like whole food and they're even charging prices like whole food. They shrink down the stakes for example and more they're so small and for the same price as before they did the you look to the store so they're making about 300% profit out of this and we're getting less. Then they took out Purdue chicken and they using this disgusting brand bowle and baskets it takes so horrible and they charge the same price as Perdue so you're not saving no money. I don't know how they stay open
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
24 hours shoprite with Security guards patrolling the parking lot and a guy inside near the entrance. I wasn't scared coming here at 2am even though its in Elizabeth, NJ. It's pretty organized and well stocked for being in the ghetto. I expected the aisles to look like Walmart.

Brian P.

Yelp
Horrible service all around. If you want to walk into a night club make sure you stop here while they restock. Every isle has its own music blasting, cardboard boxes Scattered throughout the store. The cashiers are less to be desired for. Long lines down the isles and no organization whatsoever.

Yelp
So I was in town for an emergency visit. Elizabeth has changed over the years and many of our fav restaurants have sold out and more mediocre restaurants have moved in overall. So we went shopping at Shop Rite. What a disorganized layout to a grocery store! Lol, I had to ask employees almost where everything was. Anyway they had a great collection of all kinds of clams. The prices were reasonable with a Shop Rite card. We eventually got almost everything we needed. Some employees were spot on where the item we wanted were and some not at all. Overall it was an extra lengthy shopping trip because of the disorganized pattern of the store. The store and parking lot seemed safe enough but who wants to mug you in a raining double storm? Yelp Review #333

Yelp
Kathleen, presuming the pharmacist, is a rock star!!! I am grateful beyond measure for the time she took to help me regarding my elderly father's second vaccine appt which we were waiting to hear about just two days before. My dad was getting anxious because I kept calling the established shoprite vaccine hotline and kept getting cut off after being on hold. Now he is calmly looking forward to getting a call and or text the day before with the specific appt time. Thank you Kathleen for being a shining star!! God Bless all the pharmacy staff!!

Yelp
Talk about chaos! This place is always super crowded. Good luck finding a parking spot close at p the entrance. I have come here every day of the week literally and I find that Tuesday's and Wednesday are the least busiest but it still makes it hard to navigate through the store with your cart. The options of products are very limited when we talk about organic or natural. They are very expensive if you ask me compare to real organic whole foods. The entrance of the store is always overstocked with "items on sale", but it's no surprise it's all junk food from wings to chips and soda! The only reason I come here in is the distance, is very close to my house but if I had a whole foods next to me this place would be for ever forgotten. One last note, don't ever use the customer service desk unless you really have to. I tried getting a rain check for organic almond milk and I was literally there waiting for the lady to confirm there wasn't any and to then get an ok from her manager 20! Mins. The only reason I waited was because it was a good sale!

Yelp
SWEET!! I'll gladly be the FTR Shoprite in Elmora! Let's just talk about the size of this super super market! It is gargantuan. By far the biggest in my area. They have double aisles. Meaning that once you go up the first section of aisles, there are more to come. They not only have a sick ass deli counter and seafood department, but guess what else??? They dub these stations in Kosher. I love Kosher prepped foods. Yes, guilty. I am not Jewish in any way but indulge often in Kosher foods-sue me. The sale items are endless, literally. I mean if I want to get things at a bargain than G-wiz I walk my butt to Shoprite. A trip to Shoprite almost always warrants my black Mercedes walk-n-shop cart. I like to keep it simple and easy. And since I don't work right now my daily runs to the tons of stores I visit give me something to do and yelp about. But there are times that I need to buy a ton of stuff. I love to have people over!! (Hint-hint, let's hang out). I mean I get a real joy from hostessing and cooking for my family and friends. These times call for Shoprite. I know that I can score family packs of pork chops with a price that will shock the crap out of your wallet. If I need the butcher to cute me a 10 lb piece of filet mignon for my grill than I come here. Need a 12 pack of paper towels for like $5 no problem, just come here. I also look forward to the seafood specials. My son and I absolutely love seafood. However, when your 9 year old casually asks for Chilean Sea Bass for dinner than you gots to learn how to bargain hunt! Shoprite occasionally offers this fish for about $17-18 a lb. That's cheap y'all! Downside to this place is that no matter what time I seem to go and as you can see I am an early bird, the place is mobbed! Talking about exceeding the max cap by at least triple. There are so many employees in this one place and every one of them is needed. Sometimes I feel like the entire city is there. People running into you w/ their carts. Arguing at the check out lines(NO they don't offer self service). Annoying other peoples children running a muck. SMH. But you gotta take the good with the bad I guess. I try to avoid chainy grocery stores at all costs. But there are benefits, especially when you come here.

Yelp
Pro- offers many Spanish options, lots of parking. Con- always super busy, some thing are not kept fresh and staff lacks customer service.

Timothy H.

Yelp
Nothing says customer service at a 24-hour ShopRite like the employees showing there customer service skills I blasting music from there portable speakers and blocking the aisle. And then to add salt to the wound they see you trying to get through and just stare at you and not move any of the carts out of your way. I gave it to stars is due to the fact it's open 24 hours...

Michele G.

Yelp
The deli is the most poorly run deli I have ever seen.the deli clerks stand around and gossip about the customers they dont wanna wait on. The customers all dislike the clerks also. Pam is the most volitile and disrestful one of all and Wayne follows suit. In all my years of retail ive never seen such unprofessional service. .

Yelp
After a bad experience 3 days ago with their Shop from home, I gave this store another try and it was another monumental fail. I had a 930-10 am pickup slot, arriving at 945 and finding 3 other cars waiting. Unfortunately no one got their orders, at all. The car next to me arrived 925, at 10 15 I went to the man who took care of carts, asking him to go in and say people here are waiting, he didn't want to, I went to front of store, banged on the glass so cashiers saw me, throwing my hands in the air , motioning for help, nothing. Suppose there had been a body lying there. If I wanted to go in the store myself, I wouldn't be picking up an order. I made 3 calls to customer service, no one picked up. At 1030 I once again begged the cart man to tell them there are now 8 cars waiting for orders, since the new time slot people are there. He finally did. After 1 hr. out came my order, no apologies, no explanation, I hope corporate sees my reviews and contacts me. I already gave an online review and never was contacted. After 35 years shopping here , never again.

Yelp
Good grocery store where you can get mostly anything you want, decently priced. However, I don't usually shop produce there. Not because of bad quality (very fresh) but because you can get the same for cheaper at Giant Farm on Elizabeth Ave. Also, they just announced they are now open 24 HOURS! Woohoo!
google avatar

Alex X.

Yelp
Elizabeth, NJ This was a close by supermarket when I lived up here but still needed to drive. Being opened 24 hours is pretty awesome. Good prices.

Daniliz C.

Yelp
I placed an order for delivery and the next day at 10am it was ready and at my door! I really appreciated it especially with everything going on and the fact I'm a single mother with two kids! Saved me a lot of time and I didn't have to take my kids out on a crazy trip to the supermarket! I'm giving 4 stars because I did not like the fact my doordash driver who delivered did not have a mask on..... hope this helps!
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
Not my favorite ShopRite due to the long aisles, just not a fan of the layout. However, if you just need a few things it's fine and is convenient being open 24/7.

Emmi S.

Yelp
I've been to dozens of ShopRites and this one is by far the worst, but I think this is actually by design. Come to this ShopRite if you like to wait in lines that just never move. Come to this ShopRite if you are a fan of surly service or if selection is not at all important. My guess is they use actually use this store as training so the managers of other ShopRites can see what not to do.

Joan H.

Yelp
Ordered a cake from their bakery department...didn't want flowers because it was for a man, so the person in the bakery department suggested balloons. Just picked up the cake and it looks like it was put together as a joke...balloons are just globs of colored frosting with lines scribbled down from them. 8" cake, $20 and I'm embarrassed to bring it to the part.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
I just can't give it 5 stars because they one on RT 22 has such an impressive 'fresh area' of hot and cold foods. But this place is improving. -- Look. there are some low reviews here. I'll throw out some great advice --- If you go shopping on a weekend or first of the month... Well, be prepared for absolute chaos. I would try to avoid ANY shopping experience on a weekend. They have improved their Organic section. Adding much fruit, beef and chicken. - The employees are all very friendly. In all my years going here, I have yet to find a rude worker. Now you might find some chuckle-head customers, but hey, it's E-Town. Plenty of ethnic food for Portuguese, Mexican, Jewish flavors. I never used the Pharmacy. - I saw a review from a guy who lives in Paterson saying Elizabeth is the ghetto.. Now that is what I call FUNNY!
google avatar

Felicia N.

Yelp
Omg this is the worst shop rite ever! I grew up in Elizabeth and didn't find out what a good shop rite was like until I moved! The way they break up the aisles makes everything so hard to find. I usually stop by on my lunch break and have to squeeze through the lunch rush just to shop! This is the place I go to only if I have an emergency and I'll only buy packaged goods! I stopped buying they're "fresh" products after I overheard a customer complaining about a deli employee cutting meats and sneezing and wiping his nose....BARF!

Veronica L.

Yelp
This place is TERRIBLY CROWDED! The aisles are small, the floors are (somehow) uneven, and everything just feels cramped. And THEN there are too many people on top of that! I'm not one for crowds, but I get anxious when it's crowded and a small space (in this case, small aisles). I couldn't get out of here fast enough. Also, the first thing I noticed when I got in was the very odd set-up in the front. Instead of having an open lobby, you have to walk down an aisle between chest freezers and, if anybody stops to look at what's in them, they're blocking almost the entire aisle, which is the only way to get into the store. You feel like you're in a herd of cattle being let to who-knows-where... I usually go to the Stop & Shop in Elizabeth (MUCH nicer than SR!) but if I'm ever in need of groceries on that side of town again, I'll try the Pathmark down the street.
google avatar

Viv O.

Yelp
The worst shoprite ever, always crowded, never any parking and never any carts cause they are all over parking lot. Wouldn't come here again even if they were giving food away for free.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
I don't like this Shop Rite. It is crowded and the parking lot situation isn't cool. I only go here if I need something small. I kike the other Shop Rites much better.

Yelp
I always used to shop here. My parents shop here and so did my fiance and I. Until today!! My fiance is Pregnant and we use WIC services. We have shopped here for WIC products before, we for our usual stuff and went to check out. The rude cashier named David told us that they don't sell that anymore and to get out of the line and we explained that we always shop here. He couldn't Care less. We asked to see the manager. The manager came over and whispered something in his ear. Then told us in Spanish that they took those products off WIC on Sunday. So I said "wait but the WIC signs are still under these products " she said "Yeah the night guy that does it didn't do his job " ohh like it was our problem that shoprite employees are irresponsible. We were beyond uspet. I wanted to just leave and get out. We left and never coming back. We will tell everyone there to stay away from this shoprite. It is full of irresponsible workers.

Chris C.

Yelp
horrible customer service from daisy && maryann over in yhe customer service department! when i say i hate coming to this shoprite i would rather drive to linden and be treated with some kindness instead of driving down the street to use my money! horrible customer service from those two ladies especially the one woth the long black hair!! let's do better shoprite

Madison D.

Yelp
First grocery shopping experience in my neighborhood was here & it was bad. I understand that crowds aren't within the stores control but yeah. Too crowded. Also, it was the most unorganized grocery store I have ever been to. Nothing is ordered properly & good luck figuring it out!

Alan T.

Yelp
By far the best market in the area for quality and price. Great customer service and everyone is very helpful. Not a high end store but a pretty good selection of products and rarely do I not find what I need, Also it is open 24/7. It is crowded but not their fault they are popular. But seem to have enough cashiers on hand. They even have a Kosher section which is good for Jews and Muslims.
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
they have a lot of kosher stuf more then other shop rite in the area .you can get almost evry tthing you need they have meet and fish and dairy stuf they good
