I have lived in Union for over 24 years and have been shopping at the ShopRite on Route 22 since it first opened. Unfortunately, the store has gone downhill significantly.
Recently, after spending over $250 on groceries — most of it on meat — I was stopped at the exit because the security sensors went off due to $27 pack of steak that still had a security tag attached. I was then asked to stand there while employees removed items from my bags to find a pack of beef that still had a metal security tag attached. They had to take it back to the register to “deactivate” it and then return it to my cart.
This process made no sense and was frustrating, time-consuming, and humiliating. Being stopped and having my groceries searched after paying a large amount of money made me feel like I was being treated as if I had stolen something. Other customers were watching, and it was embarrassing and upsetting.
I understand stores need to prevent theft, but placing security tags on meat that are not properly removed at checkout — and then stopping paying customers at the exit — is poor planning and poor customer service. Not everyone who shops here is a thief. Many of us work hard for our money and deserve to be treated with basic respect.
If theft is such a concern, ShopRite should improve its checkout procedures or increase visible security rather than inconveniencing and embarrassing paying customers.
Because of this experience, I will no longer be shopping at the Route 22 ShopRite. I hope management seriously reconsiders this policy, because this was one of the most unpleasant grocery shopping experiences I’ve had.
