Best Food on Cape Ann in Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"Partly owned and operated by a couple of Chez Panisse alums, Short & Main is serving some special food (and wine) on Cape Ann. The wood oven turns out fresh bread (and much more), and the oyster list is vast and ever-changing. Short & Main reopened for indoor dining on May 28, 2021, and is also offering takeout." - Terrence Doyle

I sauntered in for dinner this past Sunday having attended the annual St Peters Fiesta. First of, not only were there a lot of people in the city due to the Festival, but this incredible restaurant had just received a nod in a New York Times review as being one of the top 25 Pizza places in the US, the only one in the northeast. Needless to say, I least expected to find even a solo seat, but then I had also not expected to be ushered by a very congenial and amiable host, who I later found out is the co-owner, Matt Cawley. Right from his warm welcome and how he greets and cares to thank each of his patrons, I knew that this place had a special vibe. Having gotten a seat that was amazingly still available at the bar, I couldn’t help but notice the unique custom surface that has a rich veneer filled with Oyster shells patterned in concrete. This is complemented by the very warm ambiance and the friendly service that you will notice all around. Neil and Pat were just the most pleasant folks one could have for a relaxed time at the bar. They made the experience special and inviting. The nice thing is that this place offers smaller portions, so one can try a wider selection from an interesting menu. I started with Oysters that were amazing; see photo with the description. I would say the one from PEI might have had a slight edge over the others, but they were all very flavorful. The next round was a delightful three slice Bruschetta plate which would please any palate; my favorite being the Olive Tapenade. The final course was the acclaimed Pizza, which are all personal sized, and can be shared. I had the Louis Prima, with sausage, red onion, hot peppers, mozzarella and basil. The thin crust is freshly made in the wood fired oven on site, and is as delectable and appetizing as the Times review suggested. From the lean sauce and hardly any grease, to the fresh ingredients you could not ask for a more satisfying taste in a mouth watering pizza bite. Even though I was full, I could not resist finishing the evening with a savory Tiramisu portion. If you are in town, it would be well worth stopping by this restaurant and enjoying the unique set of dishes, and of course the Pizza that catapulted this restaurant to a coveted list in the Times. The ambiance is very cozy and the staff make the place very welcoming. On the way out I could feel the difference when talking to Matt and the pride he takes in running this place, and making sure that everyone leaves satisfied.

It was great to have dinner here tonight to celebrate my dad’s and aunt’s birthdays. My dad owns the building and opened Valentino’s restaurant in the 80’s when I was a child. I have fond memories of that restaurant and it’s nice to have another successful in its place. The oysters are fresh and a good price when you go early and the pizza is delicious. Definitely check them out!

As I sat down to make this reservation after reading the NYT article mentioning this Gloucester establishment, I was beginning to have high expectations considering I'd have to make the hour drive just to try their pizza, but it was a risk I was willing to take. Pulling in to park near the restaurant, the first thing visible to us was one of the employees chopping wood in the back for their wood fired oven and a line around the corner before they opened. From there I had the inkling that this place was really legit. When they seated us our waiter was incredibly polite and helpful as he gave us his recommendations for pizzas to try. After viewing the menu it was time to order for our table of 3. To start, we ordered a dozen oysters (2 of each oyster offered) which came out cold, fresh, and incredibly delicious. The cocktail sauce accompanying the oysters was an excellent way to elevate the oysters as well. Now for pizza: we ordered the margherita, the ricardo, the funghi, and the louis primo. The pizzas themselves are pretty small so three to four is a good amount especially if your looking to try multiple pizzas. The margherita was very good but compared to the other pizzas the most basic. The freshness of the basil and the sauce elevated the margherita but at the end of the day it was the most simple. The louis primo was a step up with the cheese and sausage and a hint to heat with the peppers and onions and another must have. The ricardo similarly was delicious and the soppressata brought the whole pizza together. While all the pizzas thus far were incredible, the funghi pizza was the bell of the ball. The white pizza with mushrooms, cheese, onion, and a hint of lemon was the showstopper of all showstoppers. I appreciated that they didn't just cut up big mushrooms but instead used smaller mushrooms. The hint of lemon added acidity and zest that truly tied this pizza together. If there is one pizza that has to be ordered it is no doubt the funghi pizza. All in all I think the NYT absolutely nailed this review and frankly it's a shame Massachusetts doesn't have the Michelin Guide because believe me this place deserves more than its flowers, it deserves a star. When you have an italian like my father tell the waiter that this is the best pizza he's had in this country then you know its the real deal. I thought the oyster and pizza combo would be odd but it works so well that now I can't think of pizza without it. The locally sourced produce that they mention on the menu from the local farms adds an additional level of freshness that it hard to beat. I believe that this place might not only have the best pizza in the state but that it's WELL WORTH the drive from wherever you are.

Warning! Avoid sitting at one of the two-top tables against the wall of the bar area. The guests who stand there waiting for a table to open up are directly above your head. You will hear each and every word of their conversation projecting directly down onto you. Extremely distracting and loud. It looked like sitting in front of the open kitchen would be the best spot! Anyway, after seeing the nod in NYTimes, we went for the pizza. Fungi was fabulous with that touch of lemon, and a pillowy, semi-charred crust. Could’ve used a touch of salt. Wish we would’ve ordered a second pizza as one feeds one hungry person. Yes it does take 45 mins. Apps: All 3 oyster varietals were extremely fresh and delicious. Beet and peach salad was tasty but needed more pistachios for texture. Overall a top notch spot for pizza & oysters under one roof. I wouldn’t call it mind-blowing as some reviews suggest, unless it’s your first time eating artisanal wood-fired pizza. Lastly and unimportantly, there was an un-well woman in the lobby when we first arrived who clearly wasn’t there as a patron. As my partner and I entered she shared some unsolicited observations with us regarding our physical appearances. Very bizarre and most likely an anomaly.

A great spot for dinner in Gloucester. We went on a Monday at 7 and they were packed - definitely a popular stop! The service was a bit slower but it’s a lovely atmosphere so we didn’t mind. We loved the Spring Buck cocktail, and also ordered the Wellfleet oysters, bruschetta, Louis Prima pizza and Basque cheesecake. Everything was DELICIOUS and fresh with high quality ingredients. We originally came here after reading about it in the NYT and it’s on their list of best pizzas in the US. Don’t miss this one.

The food was good, but I would never recommend hosting an event here. We had our rehearsal dinner here. My husband and I went to try Short and Main before we booked them and when I peaked my head in the event room (the door was open), I had a woman tell me to “get out” and when I explained we were looking to have our rehearsal dinner here, she said I had to email about it. While I ignored this red flag, I wish I hadn’t. Communication from Short and Main was horrible. There were weeks between email responses consistently. Then a phone call to set up menu only to receive an email that they couldn’t remember what I said and asked me to resend the information. Even leading up to the rehearsal, I emailed 10 days out to ask about final payment and didn’t receive a response until 30 min before our dinner was supposed to begin. Lastly, they broke our contract. We had less people than we agreed upon in February when we booked. Per the contract, it states you have 8 days prior to the event to change the guest count, which I had notified them in time. The day of the rehearsal, I was told we had to pay for the number of people I said in February. I thought about emailing regarding this breach in contract, but I probably wouldn’t get a response. Save yourself the stress and find a place that has some organizational skills to host your event.

What a great experience for our anniversary dinner. Great hospitality from the host/manager and the bartenders. The wine selection was really eclectic & fun, the oysters were super fresh, and the pizza & pasta were delicious. Would highly recommend!

First time visiting Cape Ann (Gloucester MA). Everyone recommended going here, and they were right! Such a great place for dinner! Food, service, atmosphere, all were amazing. Definitely worth a visit, you won’t regret it.

Yelp
A must-try in Gloucester! We made a reservation for a Friday night at 8pm and the restaurant was still very much bustling even during the later hours. The business I think definitely led to some slower service, but the staff (servers, hostess) were doing their absolute best to make sure everyone was happy. The inside is cozy with an exposed brick oven kitchen, red tile floors, and a chic bar. We ordered the house bread with olive oil - yum! The olive oil was drizzled over the bread and I think it could be a better dish if the oil was just served in a small bowl for dipping like how most places do it. Then we got the meatballs - wowowow. The red sauce is SO GOOD. Super tomatoey and fresh, a little sweet. Just so flavorful. The meatballs were regular sized, which was appreciated as some places do meatball apps that are like baseballs and way too filling. We enjoyed eating up all the sauce from the plate using our bread :) Then came the pizza. Fab! We had the Bert, a red pizza with that delicious tomato sauce, and the Funghi, a white pizza with a variety of exciting mushrooms on top. I think we preferred the Bert just because that red sauce is so amazing but both were really good. We took home leftovers and enjoyed them immensely the next day. Would definitely come back next time we are visiting Gloucester!

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Gloucester! I'm always happy with the oysters, fish carpaccio (never had it this good!), roasted chicken and whatever version of beet salad they've created for the day. This is true farm to table and the menu and dish variations reflect that. Last week the herbed chicken was cooked perfectly and accompanied by, I think, a potato-parsnip mash topped generously with a chopped toasted almond or hazelnut riff on a "salsa di noci". Amazing. I will admit there are occasionally dishes that miss the mark including wood fired pizzas that are over-toasted but that doesn't dampen my enthusiasm for a place that puts out fresh and creative food day after day for a fair price. Lastly, the bartenders are excellent, enthusiastic and creative - so sitting at the bar can be fun. Try it! Then try it again!

Yelp
The pizza was, of course, incredible. My sibling and I wanted to try this place after reading the NYT article about great pizza in the US. We got really lucky and were able to be seated about 5 minutes after walking in even without a reservation, which was super lucky. We watched a lot of bigger groups (4+) get turned away so I would recommend securing one before coming!! Our server was friendly and helpful, and she helped us pick out an appy and drinks. We got the marinated olives, the BOGO oysters, the Ricardo pizza, and Basque cheesecake. Amazing thin crust and tasty but not overpowering sauce, delicious toppings, genuinely the best oyster i've ever had, a dense, rich, decadent cheesecake, and simple yet delicious olives. Please secure yourself a reservation and try this place!!!

Yelp
The rigatoni ragu was precooked, then left in a bowl to reheat in the water quickly. It was over and mushy and misshapen. The ragu was tasty. None of that mattered, and I will now be (more) pretentious... It was a superlative pizza. Downright u-dough-pian. We had the funghi and the aglio. The funghi was the culmination of some poor perfectionist's trials to finally figure out it needed lemon zest. You were right. We added sausage to the the aglio, which complimented the best ricotta I've ever had. Both were delicious. We will back.

Yelp
Terrific place! Not just for pizza: their raw bar, entrees, and salads are also all great. Among the very best Gloucester restaurants. I'm a local and have eaten here many times. Love to sit at the oyster bar and watch the crew at work. The clam pizza just rotated back on the menu, and it is fantastic! The Louis Prima (spicy sausage) is another favorite, but they are all excellent, and things come and go, so it never gets boring.

Yelp
Obviously a lot of buzz given the NYT feature. But the pizza was legit; front of house was a little rude, but waitstaff was friendly.

Yelp
The food at Sarma is so interesting. Unlike any place I've ever been to it's comforting and adventurous and hip in atmosphere service and cuisine

Ann N.

Yelp
The pizza is terrific. Everyone liked all of the four pizzas we tried. The oysters were a disappointment. Maybe half still had fluid and a few were "chopped" in their shell.

Yelp
We were very excited to try this place, since two of the owners met while cooking at one of our favorite restaurants in the country, Chez Panisse, Alice Waters' famous farm-to-table spot in Berkeley, CA, and came recommended by Eater 38. We came in for happy hour, and got an assortment of oysters, which were really good. Some of the entrees were a bit better than others, but overall, a really enjoyable meal, great service, and cool, hip setting.

Yelp
The pizza here is so good. You can eat an entire pizza yourself without batting an eye. The crust is thin but the edges are nice and thick and chewy. It has a nice charcoaly flavor from their brick oven. I love the ambience. Its nice and dark and simple inside- happy to not have to look at bad restaurant art TBH- as an artist- I notice badly done art and decor and it can ruin a place for me! The food is all organic and locally sourced. If you dont care about that stuff you might find it overpriced and pretentious. Our waitress was sweet and kind of quiet- dressed in her own outfit- no uniform- with an apron, plain makeup and hair. The aesthetic here is more Northern California or Brooklyn than Gloucester. I like how the servers are not overly solicitous or overly harried. Im so happy to have this place in my town. Please give them business because they really make great food and drinks but when you do, realize its a special experience and unlike what youd expect in a tourist town like Gloucester. Go here if you appreciate Nepolitan style pizza because it rivals any NYC establishment.

Yelp
This place rocks. Beautiful oysters with a great selection. Drinks spot on. Service attentive. Thin crust Italian-style pizza (not for splitting) which if you're into this kind of pizza - which you should be - they nail it. Cute rustic interior. Perfect PERFECT lighting. Owners at the door and in the kitchen and it shows. Top tier!

Yelp
Gave this restaurant a second chance New Owners I was told. the pizza was still soggy in the middle, ask them to make it crispy. Did not occur. the appetizers were common not WOW. Service push drinks on the patrons,, The Ambiance needed a remodel, looked same dingy atmosphere as 2 years ago. Don't recommend this restaurant, Pizza is very overpriced, I will stick with Pepe's

Yelp
We have dined 1/2 dozen times at Short & Main, and have always found it exceptional. Last night was our first time doing so post the NYT article. Ironically, it was disappointing. The wine and the fish entree we wanted were both unavailable. The bottle they suggested instead wasn't chilled (Sav Blanc), and the bruschetta was 3 small stale pieces of bread with average toppings. things picked up significantly with excellent oysters and salads, but quickly deteriorated with the pasta and pizza. The pizza was average and the pasta was just plain bad. My Cavatelli with local zucchini and squash had two meager pieces of zucchini and no squash. (They took it off the bill) The pasta was very overcooked and the sauce was bland and gluey. The rigatoni was likewise over cooked, and the sausage was minimal. Brunch at the less hyped Oak & Ember was much better.

Yelp
Tip: You get half off oysters during the oyster happy hour, which means you get them for $2 each between 5pm-6pm everyday. Not $1. I loved this place, nice little cozy set up on the Main St. It's expensive, no doubt. Their bar is impressive, nice collection. The Oysters were fresh. The menu is very European. I would have loved to try the bread or pizza here, but I didn't have enough time to wait. As this is downtown Gloucester, you will have to find the parking space. I don't think the restaurant has one. The restroom is on the second floor. The staff is polite and friendly. Would love to go back some day!

D W.

Yelp
Reservation at 5pm. Given menus and water, then ignored for twenty-five minutes while every other table and patron were served drinks and appetizers. We were very polite and one of the first groups to sit down, but others arriving after us were served immediately. It became extremely uncomfortable as if we did something wrong. We were prepared to spend well over $100, maybe closer to $ 200 with appetizers, drinks, and entrees. I'm not sure why we were treated this way. I will let my Gloucester area friends know about our experience, too. Shameful treatment of a polite group who didn't deserve to be ignored. ZERO stars.

Yelp
We went for oysters yesterday- had not been there in over a year The oysters were fair, the pizzas were not as good as before The dough was bland, middle of the pizza under cooked and crust almost burnt. The bill was over $200.00 We were very disappointed

Yelp
Good food, friendly and knowledgeable staff, albeit portions on the small size. The ambience is s very pleasant too. The fried chicken night is well worth going to and the oysters stand out as well.

Yelp
I arrived in town after a cross country flight and after checking the reviews walked down the main street. Although known for pizza, these folks also have a few other things on the menu. As I walked by, this place looked inviting and the folks seated inside seemed to be all smiles. I was pleased to see that they were requiring vaccination for inside dining. Although they were moderately busy on a Friday evening, they welcomed me as a single diner. They had a nice selection of beer and wine and a number of interesting variations on standard cocktails. I really enjoyed the rye based riff on the classic Martinez. The menu has oysters and other raw seafood, appetizers with a Mediterranean emphasis, salads, a couple of pasta dishes, and of course pizza. As a fan of West coast oysters I always like to take advantage of the opportunity to have some of the east coast varieties. The two oysters I had were perfectly fresh, nicely presented, and quite delicious. Dining alone I didn't want to tackle a pizza on my own (though many of their combinations were VERY tempting) so I had the charcuterie appetizer as my main. Housemade chicken liver and country pates, mostarda, mustard, and hot crostini. The dish provided nice contrasts of smooth and chunky, crispy, tangy, and sharp. The olive oil cake made a not too sweet dessert course. Presented with a sizable dollop of whipped cream and a smear of lemon curd it would be perfect to share with a date. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Yelp
Last summer we were raving fans and sent many to Short & Main. No longer. Last summer we overcame our distaste of having to pay full price of an entree for a plate of pasta with butter for our young child, and did so willingly. And the Campanelle was such a hit we returned again and again. The pizza was fine and the day boat cod out of this world. This year they summarily refused to serve pasta with butter for a child. Very distressing. Especially as we had promised to go out for her "favorite pasta" on our first night of vacation. The white pizza was low on flavor. Our pizza was ok. Tuna tartare was ok at best and smaller than at other Gloucester restaurants. The arugula salad was not much. Very unpleasant experience and not child friendly attitude at all.

Yelp
Place is incredible and the staff are extremely patient and accommodating. They really go above and beyond with their service and the food is excellent. One of the top spots if you're in Gloucester. Great ambiance as well.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Read an article that Short and Main had one of the best of the best pizza's in the country. My wife and I do not live in Gloucester but wanted try to the pizza with two of our friends, we tried to make reservations but you have to use a third party to do that., tried doing that but had a hard time with the third party trying to make reservations. So on Short and Main's web site it says " Not all tables are reserved to allow for walk-ins" so we got there at actually 5:00 PM when they opened as walkins, there were a couple of people in front of us. We got to the desk and the gentleman told us there were no tables available til 8:00. Even though they just opened up and only a couple of people in front of us. He offered seats at the bar but we wanted a table to sit and talk and enjoy the pizza. He told us there was nothing he could do, even though their website said they have tables for walk-ins Which was not true. SO WE LEFT VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! and went to another restaurant to eat!

Yelp
Amazing, always need to come back here when I go home to MA. The fact that this restaurant is both a raw bar and Neapolitan style pizza is really just heaven. Why aren't all restaurants doing this? I always get a marg pizza with a billion oysters, whatever they recommend, and a bottle of whatever their lightest white is. The aesthetic of the restaurant is really cute and simple - a very trendy little place tucked away in downtown Gloucester. Love love love!

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with great atmosphere. Pizzas smelled great and looked even better. Dollar oysters (5-6 and 9-10pm daily) were fresh but very poorly shucked. My husband's drink was delicious. Citrusy and boozy, very tasty. My gin and soda was flat and weak. If we go back I'll get one of their signature drinks. Reservations recommended.

Yelp
Absolutely the best pizza on Cape Ann. After returning from Italy we have been on a quest to find pizza cooked the real Italian way. This is it. Thin crispy delicious crust, real buffalo mozzarella cheese - great

Yelp
Great specialty pizzas. Very attentive service for our group of 8 people at two tables.

Yelp
Advertised special German night. Not much to choose from. Curry wurst, not even close, limp fries, posted out to waitress, could care less plus $26 fir a sausage? Won't see me again

Yelp
Super hipster vibe. Pizza taste like burnt cardboard that's overly priced. They make an alright cocktail.
google avatar

Yelp
Pizza was soggy, someone that knows how to make wood fired pizza should work there, Also over priced , for a 13 inch pizza $23 ridiculous. The meatballs were just ok. The server was pushing drinks, we didn't even finish our glasses of wine asking us if we want another. The guy on the pizza oven looked hung over as we sat near the counter. His eyes were blood shot and you couldn't put another tattoo on him. The rest room on the second floor was gross, no handicap or rest room on first floor.

Yelp
if you're in the mood for v good thin crust pizza, fresh oysters & terrific cocktails served by hipsters who are def cooler than you, then this just might become your go to spot in Gloucester!

Yelp
Short n Main or Shot in Vein? Used to enjoy the food here but didnt think they would request a full bill of health for me to continue buying it. Plenty of other good options in town that never forced you get a lethal injection in order to dine with them. Bravo pizza is an excellent alternative if you didn't get the Fauci jab, but still want to enjoy a nice brick oven pizza.

Yelp
Hands down, Short & Main is in the top three chef owned, locally sourced and epicurean curated restaurants in the north shore. Found it last night, had an amazing dinner spread for three. Pizza, rigatoni with beef ragout and solid wine selection. Warm Atmosphere and warmly lit. An absolute must. Cannot understand how this establishment is not five stars on Yelp. We will be back.

Jens R.

Yelp
We managed a table for 8 at 5pm at the last minute. Second time there. Loved the service, the room, the food. Best beet salad according to the beet expert. Best wild mushroom pasta I think. Great wine list with unusual picks that pair well with the menu. Oh, and I was told the pizza was great by others. Sadly the leftovers were placed on the roof of the getaway car.

Yelp
I was on a business trip to Boston and got invited to join a couple of friends for super at Gloucester, MA. First stop was the Market Restaurant but my flight to Logan was late and I didn't get there until 6:15pm. This spot is so popular that I was not able to squeeze with my friends already there. Besides, they were already on their desert. I heard the seared tuna appetizer was really great. There was a lobster pasta dish that they also raved about. So we decided to do some oysters at the sister restaurant Short & Main to make my trip worthwhile. By the time we sit down, it was close to 8 pm. Apparently, there was dollar oyster at 9 pm. A plan emerged. We decided to get some appetizer and a pizza to stretch the hour and then go for the dollar oysters. We wanted to try the meatballs as they were supposed to be awesome. However, a wedding party upstairs took all of them! We ordered the salted, spiced almonds, some olives, beets salad and tomato salads. For the pizza, we went for the buffula mozzarella pie with extra sausage and an egg. The salads were okay, fresh as one would expect but nothing special. The pizza at $22 plus $5 for the sausage and $3 for the egg did not live up to expectation (my). The pie was soft, lacked the crispness that I would look for in a wood fired oven. It was burned on the top, a telltale sign that the pizza maker misjudged. There were barely noticeable sausages. So is a $30 personal sized pizza a good value? We then ordered 4 dozens of oysters. Those were really fresh but only one type - wellfleet. There was no horseradish, no tobasco. Nonetheless, everyone enjoyed the oysters.

Sharon B.

Yelp
We consistently have been disappointed in our experience at Short and Main. We always hope it will have turned around the next time we visit, but that has not happened, sadly. The pizza toppings are always delicious and sparse, and the crust is always thin and soggy. This time we also tried the Campanella pasta, which tasted bland and was mushy from the pasta being overcooked, with just a slight hint of the other ingredients present. Overall I have to sadly say, this restaurant consistently underachieves while also being very pricey. Those factors, combined with the never changing menu, means we probably won't be back.

Jett S.

Yelp
Amazing. I go here every Friday night and the whole staff is lovely. The bartenders Eyrn and Casey are wonderful. The food that come from that kitchen is unreal. Don't miss the opportunity to eat here.

Yelp
What is happening with this place? The owners are never present. The staff is endlessly turning over. Spotty service and food. Same uninspired menu for the last couple of year. They blame all of their problems on Covid. Time to close shop and call it quits.

Yelp
The best caesar salad -- ever. Such a treat! Meatballs were excellent. The to go drink we had was thoughtfully packaged for the current to-go covid craziness. We have looked inside in the past, and found it dark and bland relative to the decor, hence, never stopped. Then learned that the owners are they same owners as the prior Market, so we went with vigor! We are heading back next wkend for more!

Yelp
We were seeing a show in Rockport in January and many of those restaurants are closed for the season so we stumbled upon Short & Main. I am so glad we did! The service was great and the atmosphere was warm, romantic and cozy! It's dark inside so if that bothers you then... you are warned. But use your iPhone flashlight and you'll be just fine. The menu is small but everything we ordered was so fresh and delicious. My favorite was the classic margarita pizza. It's not very large so depending on your appetite you might want to order more than one (if you are sharing!). The cocktails were SO good. Overall, worth every penny because the quality was perfect. We parked on the street not sure if they have their own parking lot. I suggest making a reservation!

Yelp
I have supported this restaurant since day 1. Today we went to the establishment and were asked for my vaccine card. I asked the maskless manager for hers and she said it was in her office. I asked her for proof that her entire unmasked staff was vaccinated and she said that she saw all of their vaccinated cards. So to clarify, I believe in vaccines and work in the healthcare field. I want everyone to be vaccinated. But until the board of Heath can insure that all restaurant workers are vaccinated, the restaurant has no business asking me for my vaccine card. If the restaurant is truly concerned about covid, then all of workers and guests should be wearing a mask. Get vaccinated.

Yelp
We found this place by accident as we were staying out on the ocean side of Gloucester...and we were glad we did. We had the Margherita pizza along with fresh oysters and a tiramisu for dessert! It was all delicious.

Yelp
First I wanna say that I had the best dinner experience here. My boyfriend and I got engaged yesterday and were trying to think of the best place for a special dinner to celebrate. We walked around Main Street and almost ate at Tonno but it was so loud and the tables were so close together and we just couldn't enjoy the atmosphere so we left. We continued our search for the perfect romantic place to celebrate. As we passed Short & Main we noticed how beautiful it was inside, sort of a classic italian look with a modern touch. We went inside and were greeted by Steve, who sat us at the nicest round corner table right by all the huge windows. Steve was so fast at bringing our menus and then our drinks right away, took our orders as soon as we were ready and the food didn't take long at all. I can't remember the name but I got the cocktail that has tequila in it and it was delicious. We got the meatballs in sauce appetizer (it was amazing) and split the rosso pizza (also great). The bread that came with the meatballs was so good that we asked for more. Steve was so helpful and nice and gave us champaign to celebrate. Later on another girl who worked there also came over and congratulated us. The other people eating there were happy and friendly and made the atmosphere feel so welcoming. Thank you so much Steve and everyone else at Short & Main for showing us the perfect engagement dinner that we will remember forever.

Yelp
This place is straight flames. The pizza? Fire. The oysters? Dank. and a dollar (like plz and thank you give me as many as you can). Apparently the beer was good. I did not get any but my boyf did and he liked it. Very cool atmosphere and we got to sit at the bar which is always a plus because then you dont have to stare down the person you're with. The servers were friendly and gave good suggestions. If I'm ever in the area again I'd def go back!

Yelp
Really enjoyed our dinner here in downtown Gloucester. The restaurant is small but modernly decorated with a nice atmosphere. We walked right in on a weeknight and there were a few open tables to pick from. Staff was attentive and there were no issues with service. We each got a local beer and started off with the house breads, which were good but nothing special for 4 dollars. We ordered 16 oysters (8 a piece) and I was kinda bummed that they were out of 3 of the kinds we wanted to try. I probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between the kinds we wanted and the kinds we ended up getting, but if you have a list of 7 types of oysters, you probably shouldn't be out of 3 of them. Anyway, the oysters were good so this wasn't a huge deal. We also got the Chicory and bacon salad which had a good texture though was a little bitter with all the endive. The margarita pizza was nice and classic with a yummy wood-fired char. I had my eye on some of the more creative pizzas but those will have to wait for next time! I'd say it's a tad over-priced but the food is good and fresh and it's a nice change from the touristy seafood restaurants.

Yelp
Simply the best meal I have had in some time! The pizzas used a very good tomato. They may be San Marzano? Everyone enjoyed each one thoroughly. The braised spare ribs? Oh, my!! Have you ever wanted to make sure the night went perfectly? If so and you are in the Gloucester area, this would be a fantastic choice.

Yelp
Great Dinner Pizza and Burrata! This amazing staff accommodated my party of 5 last minute. Service was wonderful. Food was delicious. We didn't have to wait long for anything.

Yelp
We came back to Gloucester 2 years later for a mini vacation in part to eat this pizza again. We're going to be back again soon.

Yelp
Came up here for a long weekend away, and this place was recommended to us by our Airbnb host. We loved it! The pizza was good, and we got 1/2 off on our oysters. Only downside is that there's no outdoor seating and street/public parking.
