I give my outing here about 3.49 stars, so I have to round down to 3. The brewpub is huge and it was boisterous on this Friday evening as they were celebrating Oktoberfest, and they have live music here to boot on Fridays. A pal and I had dinner here before heading over for a show at nearby Zanies Comedy Club. I also learned that Short Fuse Brewing now supplies several of the beer choices at Zanies so they have a nice neighborly collaboration going on, and I had a couple of their brews over there as well. It was also of interest to see the stark and abrupt contrast between working class Schiller Park and corporate Rosemont right along a short stretch of River Road.
As far as the outing here, a couple of factors kept the outing more in the ok and not higher range. The atmosphere was festive, upbeat, and vibrant and I really liked that, but the food and beer were only in the ok range. I had an Oktoberfest special of their bratwurst patty melt with fries for $15. Bratwurst patty melt was ok and maybe slightly pricey and the fries were a bit over-salty. My pal had their bomb burger ($16) and said it was ok also. I also had their following beers:
- Purple Juice Cannon double NEIPA (10.0% ABV)
- Loosey Juicy IPA (6.4% ABV), had this at Zanies
- Bear-ie White pale wheat (4.8% ABV), had this at Zanies
It's just my personal beer taste, but I didn't love any of the beers and wouldn't go out of my way for them again. I liked the Loosey Juicy the best (being ok) but the Purple Juice was a bit too grapy sweet and tart, and the Bear-ie was also a bit tart. That's ok, I'll try anything once, and do like trying things. I've found there are certain beer brands I really like - like anything made by say Lagunitas, Deschutes, or Surly. Other brands I simply don't like that much - Samuel Adams and Great Lakes for example, so maybe Short Fuse for me just falls more in the latter grouping. On the plus side, the brewpub doesn't charge much of a premium for higher ABV% beers, just $8.00 vs $7.50 for all the other normal ABV% beers.
This outing's rating was also held back by the loud live music. Once they started playing, there was no way to have a conversation unless you're a lip reader. It reminded me of being in Quigley's Irish Pub in Naperville when the band is playing - hopelessly loud! A pro-tip for you though - as the space is quite expansive, if there's live music, sit in the far away room at the rear and you'll have a much better chance at a conversation even with the music. All said, this review is simply biased to my personal tastes. Short Fuse Brewing is still a great brewpub to have in the area.
