Charleston Chef Shuai Wang Competes on ‘Top Chef’ Season 22 | Eater Carolinas

"Started by the Wangs after a promised job fell through following their 2014 move from Brooklyn, this 'untraditional Japanese' food truck was almost an instant hit in the Lowcountry. Reflecting on the concept and reception, Wang later told Eater, “Our food was a little strange — there was nothing like it around here, but we just had to find our people to love us for who we are.”" - Erin Perkins

So many options!! Cute little spot in downtown. I came around 11am and there was barely anybody there. Ordered thru classpass and they were familiar. Can’t wait to try the other dishes and drinks ✨ Super friendly staff

Blueberry matcha is to die for if you like blueberries. Amanda is so pleasant and delightfully sweet. She really helped me navigate the menu as it was my first time here. SHES THE GOAT! Hehe 🫶🥰🥰

Google
A small cute asian fusion brunch restaurant. The portions are decent. You get a lot of food and vegetables. I guarantee you get full after finishing your meal. Every bites were filled with flavor. I recommend trying their vermicelli bowl. They have more western options such as breads and eggs too. There are options for vegetarians and gluten free. The coffee could be stronger. Staffs are nice and welcoming.

Ordered a tofu bowl which tasted good. The place is pretty small but lil cute. But the service is a whole another story. This rude lady at the counter acted like I was there to eat for free. Gave me an estimate of 5 min, I followed up after 15 but still no courtesy. Never going back in there

Google
Shout out to Manu for always working hard! Among my go to cafes in the area. It’s fairly priced, offers variety, and has some ORIGINAL DELICIOUS menu items! The staff is friendly and the place is SMALL. Overall Short Grain cafe is an ideal place for anyone seeking for an average cafe/restaurant with proper prices that stays open past 4 pm. Love their turkey sandwich and ricotta toast!

Google
Really good place. Small cafe, small menu, small portions, but I have to endorse the focus on quality. Everything from the bread to the sauce on the green eggs and spam even the coffee, and I will say I think these are the best pancakes in JC. Wish there was more selection, but until then...

Jill Vachhani

Google
The lemon ricotta pancakes are my favorite. This place doesn’t have too many bells and whistles but they make up for that with consistency, which is worth a lot to me. Can rely on them for a 7am breakfast and even delivered, it came out great. Always great on delivery.

Google
Kind of embarrassing but…tomato soup is one of my favorite foods ever. It is however, rare for me to find one that is just right. Short grain hits the nail on the head when it comes down to their grilled cheese and tomato soup. I have unashamedly enjoyed this meal even during the heatwave. My only wish is if they sold the soup separately or in a bigger serving 🙏 But maybe that’s for the best for my wallet’s sake. Other than that, please never change short grain!!!

Yelp
There's a couple of items available for just about everyone - there were a small number of items that were or could be made vegan and gluten-free, which I appreciated. Not really anything on the breakfast or brunch menu, sadly, but at least there were the rice/noodle bowls that could be made both vegan and gluten-free. I got the sesame tofu salad bowl and it was delicious. (I'm pretty sure it was listed as gluten-free when I was there, but it doesn't seem to be anymore?) It was a decent serving of tofu and made for a nice light brunch. If I'd been hungrier, I'd have also gotten some bubble tea - maybe next time. I will say that it took a while to order - the seating area isn't even really that big but they seemed to not have enough staff to take orders from people dining in and people getting take-out at the same time. Probably didn't help that we were there at near peak brunch time on a Sunday. Non-vegan boyfriend and his brother got pancakes and avocado toast and eggs that they were extremely happy with. They ended up ordering take-out online (while seated at the dine-in tables) and eating it there because it was complicated trying to get their orders taken in person.

Yelp
We came in to pick up a Too Good to Go bag, but ended up getting drinks for the walk home. I had the blueberry matcha latte, which was so delightful. I loved the blueberry-tartness and sweetness mixed with the matcha. X had the banana milk latte, which he said was fantastic. Prices are a little high, but solid for a treat every now and then.

Yelp
One of our favorite breakfast spots in JC! Something about the parfait is just special. The eggs, coffee, and ricotta pancakes are great too. Really recommend this place! It's very unique, and each time we go here it feels special, and is a great experience. One of the places that makes us miss living in Jersey City! Such a cute location as well.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from Short Grain on a weekday for lunch because I saw an UberEats deal. We got their grain bowls - a pork adobo bowl and a coconut curry chicken rice. The store itself is pretty small with just a few tables, but it's a cute space. My order was ready pretty quickly and the service was pleasant. I had lowered my expectations based on some reviews I read, but I was pleasantly surprised by the food. Both the adobo and the curry chicken had good flavor and they were both a substantial amount of food. I didn't love the mixed green salad that it came with (not much flavor since there was very little dressing), but I didn't mind too much since I enjoyed the main part of the food.

Yelp
Although I have lived close to Short Grain at 183 Montgomery Street in Jersey City, today is the first time I had breakfast there. It was quite a delectable experience. I had their Avocado Toast with Fried Egg, Red Onion and Chili Powder and an Iced Latte Coffee. Both were totally amazing and way more than satisfying. The cuisine is Asian / Australian / American fusion. Owner Jon was friendly and hospitable. Indoor and outdoor seating. I highly recommend Short Grain and cannot wait to go back.

Yelp
Just had the best breakfast sandwich ever. This is place is now one of my top breakfast places to visit in New York. This is very cozy and Causal. It belongs to the top places for Instagram girlies to visit

Yelp
I tried coconut curry chicken as other reviewers suggested. It wasn't that good. The bread wasn't even toasted much like other banh mi. The coffee looks good and people were coming in and out. Maybe it was just an off day.

Yelp
I loved the charming, simple decor of the interior. So bright, homey, and welcoming. The menu too was a one pager - nothing more annoying to me when you have to scroll through hundreds of options and can't decide what you want. While the appearances are simple however, the food is incredibly and deliciously complex. I got to try only the Tamarind Shrimp Bahn Mi, but the fresh bun with layers of tangy vegetables and spiced shrimp was a firework of colors to experience on a cold Jersey city night. I'll definitely be coming back to try the rest of their menu (HOTCAKES? SERVED ALL DAY ) which is fair priced, quickly served, fresh, and elevated than your typical fare.

Yelp
Great location, super loud music, mediocre service, decent food, tasty Thai iced tea & soft boba. Walked in around 7:30 PM after checking out the vintage store next door. There wasn't anyone at the counter nor a bell to ring so I waited for a bit. Eventually the front register person came out of the restroom and greeted me. I don't expect people to be super bubbly and warm but she was borderline cold and I felt quite unwanted. I ordered a Thai iced tea with boba and a pork belly banh mi. I tried ordering a black sesame boba but they were out, but the Thai iced tea was really yummy. The boba was on the softer side but I didn't mind and it was a nice level of sweetness overall. I'd come for takeout but not to dine-in. I'd also opt for calling in my order ahead of time to save time and my ears.

Yelp
This is a winner! Especially on lazy weekends. You are in the mood of something different with zest and spice, but not stuffing. Short grain is the one. My favorite items are the Banh Mhi especially the one with egg and pate. It is seasoned to perfection and you can opt for the spicy sauce too. Their drinks are expensive...they range on the $6. They are treats. The bubble teas are great and refreshing although pricey. The chicken curry is awesome both in a baguette and salad. The savory stack is another item I order. It is just delicious. It's got the fluffiness of ricotta with a drizzle of honey on a stack of pillowy pancakes and a side of crispy savory bacon, and you can order extra bacon if you like. So you are on a trip that begins with sweetness to gradually transition to savory. It balances the palate beautifully. The location is very pleasant too.

Yelp
Updating my review because...Look at that , I came back for the avocado toast. Short Grain is still A good spot to come get a decent breakfast or lunch. It's more of a take out spot than a sit down place. They have some tables inside but very little And some tables outside. Let's talk about that avocado toast though! Plenty of avocado, feta, and pickled onion. I'm not a fan of sourdough bread so I wish it was on multigrain. However with so much flavor on top you couldn't really taste the bread. Had the granola bowl as well which was packed with blueberries, strawberries, traditional oat granola, yogurt, banana and chia seeds. Loved it. Maybe I'll try a lunch item next time.

Yelp
DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY FROM HERE. I placed an order for delivery and the delivery time kept getting delayed. I contacted the restaurant and they said the order has been ready for a bit. So I called the driver to let them know. The driver went to the restaurant and the restaurant kept telling them the food wasn't ready. Eventually the driver dropped the order since the restaurant was taking too long. This happened with four other drivers and after more than an hour and 10 mins the restaurant just cancelled the order.

Yelp
I'll get right to it: their avocado toast doesn't miss. I had mine with an egg on top but there are a variety of other options, all of which I'm sure are tasty. They do avo toast simple, no frills (as pictured) and they do it WELL. Added bonus: they are also dog friendly!

Yelp
Cute little cafe near Grove Street. I got two orders of the chicken curry bowl to go. Cafe is small and has a covered outdoor seating area. There's even a printer for people to come in to have a coffee and print their resumes. I arrived a little early for my pickup order, but the staff immediately got to work on it. The chicken bowl was pretty flavorful, chicken was a little on the dryer end but the sauce made up for it. This seems like a nice place to get some quick healthy and hearty bites to eat, which is a good reprieve from all the burger joints that are popping up overnight in Jersey City. I'll be back to try some of the other dishes and their pastries!

Yelp
Got take out. Sesame tofu. It's delicious and holds up well to-go. Super easy pick up. I'll be back!

Yelp
Solid neighborhood lunch spot! A small cafe with some indoor/outdoor seating and counter self service that serves up yummy sandwiches, bowls/salads, and coffee drinks! Sandwiches ($11 each) didn't disappoint! Bread is really good and great portion of meat. Big portion size and could only eat half! Rice paper rolls with shrimp are a refreshing app Bare bones outside seating could definitely use some improvement but dog friendly for a quick lunch or snack!
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is amazing. I came with a friend and we split the pork banh mi and pancakes and ordered Vietnamese ice coffees. The pancakes were sooo fluffy and light and just the right amount of sweetness. The pork in the banh mi was super tender and flavorful. I can't decide which dish I liked better! Would definitely come back. The staff was also very friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
Ordered take out again since last time was really good. This time was not the same. BOGO Pork Adobo came very light on the adobo and looked like 2 different dishes. Don't get the avo add on for $2. 3 very thin slices. Totally not worth it. Also ordered a turkey sandwich. Really poor result here and looks like they just threw it in the box. Not a great experience tonight from a normally great place. Hope this is not a trend.

Yelp
Grabbed a couple of lattes and service was fast and coffee splendid. Prices were fair. Smallmplace with a couple of tables. I would grab and go coffee. Not giving 5 stars yet until I try more things
google avatar

Prayash B.

Yelp
I really like the food here, and I think they make phenomenal sandwiches. The service, however, not so much. I was given a wrong order, and I realized it wasn't my order after I completed half the sandwich (Coz the wrong order was pretty decent too!). So I asked them if this was what I ordered, but their response was pretty rude I felt. I would have expected a simple 'Oops sorry', but it was 'well you gulped down half of it, so..' So I will be taking take outs at most now ! But recommend their cold cut sandwich and avocado toast
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to get some work done, socialize, and enjoy good food. I haven't had anything like the Curry Chicken Banh Mi they serve here, but I would order again in a heartbeat
google avatar

Kevin Z.

Yelp
We had the chicken curry bowl and the adobo pork bowl. Both were vaguely Asian-inspired and had elements of Vietnamese banh mi ingredients like picked cabbage. The chicken curry had very little, if any, curry and the adobo tasted like 红烧肉. The curry bowl lacked sauce and was too dry with rice, whereas the adobo's soy-type sauce went much better. Definitely skip the chicken. The portions were incredibly small for the price, so don't expect to get even remotely full from one. Overall, it was a fun place to try though. They even have boba for purchase. However, Short Grain really needs to work on their kitchen ventilation. It is basically impossible to breath in there, even with the front door wide open.

Yelp
Originally stopped by to use the printer using the Print with Me service. So glad we decided to also get brunch here! It was a small space with only 3 tables and a counter so be prepared to wait during busier times. It's casual dining so you order at the counter, find a place to sit, and they bring you your food. Tons of people came in for coffee and drinks while we were eating. We ordered a hot Vietnamese coffee, lemon ricotta pancakes, pork belly banh mi, and pork adobo bowl. 3/5 Vietnamese coffee was really good. A little sweet (I'm used to Vietnamese coffee being pretty strong) but still good. 5/5 Lemon ricotta hotcakes were amazing! Super fluffy, love the berries on top for the freshness, and the perfect amount of powdered sugar and syrup. 4/5 Pork belly banh mi was pretty good. I enjoyed the non-traditional meat and veggies. The pork belly was a little too fatty (but I mean, it's pork belly) and the slight sweetness of the hoisin with the crunch from the pickled cucumber was great. 3.5/5 Pork adobo bowl had a lot of rice and the pork was a little dry. Really enjoyed the pickled onions, cucumbers, and fried garlic on top. Overall great flavor. Short Grain does a great job balancing out the heaviness of the dish with freshness from the pickled vegetables and fresh fruits. Really liked that they have a good amount of vegetarian options. Would definitely come back to try more of their dishes!

Yelp
Pork Belly sandwich at $11 4 stars for the soft and moist pork belly that melts with each bite but not mushy. The bread is the banh mi (Viet sandwich bread) crispy and fresh. The flavor was nicely seasoned with cilantro topping.
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
Literally the rudest guy working here just slammed my food down in front of me while I was picking up my order. Wont ever return again. The foods not even that good to justify being treated so badly.
google avatar

Daniel H.

Yelp
Used to be a decent spot but over the years, the quality and operation have gone down down down to the extent that the food is not even minimally enjoyable. For my most recent experience, I ordered a pork belly bowl and received a bahn mi sandwich instead. I called and later returned to pick up the correct order; unfortunately received a pork adobo bowl and not pork belly. To add to insult, the meat was too salty, sour, and over-braised/reduced that it was inedible. I will no longer be a customer.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm so happy I finally checked out this cafe! Came with my sister & ordered an iced coffee, avocado toast & pork sandwich. Ended up sitting outside (their outdoor seating is super nice). I ended up really enjoying the avocado toast the most & the coffee. I think the sauce used in the sandwich was a little overpowering for me but the pork itself was super rich & fatty! Looking forward to coming back & trying more of their menu!

Yelp
I ordered here today for lunch through grub hub. I ordered the pork belly sandwich and one hash brown. The food arrived on time and looked delicious. The hash brown was a little soggy but I guess that's a problem from ordering takeout and delivery since fried foods can get soggy during delivery. I decided to eat the hash brown first. The first few bites were fine but then on the third bite I felt something weird and sharp in my mouth. I spit out the food and found a staple in the chewed up food. I have no idea how a staple had gotten into the hash brown, but if I would have swallowed it, I think I would have had major issues. I immediately threw out the rest of the hash brown and though the sandwich looked good I threw that out as well. Unfortunately grub hub wouldn't offer me a refund since it was the restaurants fault. I don't have a car so I can't take the food back. Though it was only $19 for lunch, it was a total waste of my money and total waste of food. So if you eat here, make sure you check your food.

Yelp
Love this place! I come here for the matcha lattes which are always perfect! I do need to try some of their breakfast and lunch bowls. They have both outdoor and indoor seating.

Yelp
Just ordered the Pork Adobo bowl.. After we picked it up, I opened it and looked inside because I have a peanut allergy. After finding what I thought might be minced garlic I called the restaurant and asked very specifically if there were peanuts in the pork adobo bowl because I had an allergy. Fortunately, my phone was on speaker so everyone in the room could hear her say no multiple times. I proceeded to eat half of the bowl because it tastes good... not going to lie about that.. then I happened to notice the texture was a little off and I called back and asked again. The lady said no, no peanut. And I said.. ARE YOU SURE?? Her response, "Well if you picked vermicelli noodles instead of rice, then we add peanuts." So now I'm here puking in the toilet deciding if I need an ambulance. Usually my reaction is only moderate, but this irresponsible behavior could have killed someone. Note that we ordered on Grub Hub and there is NO prompt that says hey we're going to try and kill you by mixing peanuts into the dish then cover it with a bunch of crispy onions and sauce if you would like the vermicelli noodle option.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Saturday for a quick lunch at around 1:30. There's limited seating inside but at least there were a few more tables outside and it was still warm enough to sit out there. I would describe Short Grain as a weird Asian fusion that has been super-Americanized. I had the banh mi, but I don't think I'd really call it that. Really, the only thing banh mi about it was the pickled veggies and the cilantro (which they put way too much of. It was almost like a cilantro sandwich). The bread was pretty good though, so I have to give them that. My fiancé had the pork adobo bowl with brown rice. The pork was way too dry for my taste. Maybe their non-Fietnamese (fake Vietnamese) items would be better? I'm not sure, but I don't think I'll be back to find out.
google avatar

Yelp
We tried a couple of the sandwiches. Flavor was good, but they were a bit messy. We got the food to go, but the place looked cute. Not a lot of parking available nearby so better to take the train in. I am interested in trying some of the other options on the menu. Very vegan friendly.
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
We met a friend for a wonderful brunch. The place is small so no reservations are possible. They do have outdoor seating at this time, weather permitting. The food was great! I had a PERFECT Banh mi Vietnamese pork belly sandwich. Melt in your mouth pork with crispy pickled veggies on crusty warm French bread. Heaven! My wife had a noodle bowl which she loved and our friend had a nicely thick roast beef sandwich. The Vietnamese coffee was excellent as were the fresh pressed green drinks with apple and ginger. This is not a fancy place, it's a solid neighborhood cafe with expertly prepared food. We will be back!
google avatar

Awab H.

Yelp
Not a place to come to for a sausage egg and cheese. They give you one little link in a roll with some cheese. No ketchup. So salt. No pepper. The staff isn't friendly either. Vietnamese coffee might be the only thing worth getting. Much better spots to spend your money at in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Vietnamese food. Must come and see all the great food and service!!! owner is awesome and so generous!!! Tell him Chef Cowboy sent you

Yelp
Got this place for takeout and I wasn't impressed. The food is really bland and not well seasoned and nothing to rave about. I got the coconut curry chicken bowl with noodles and it was really bland and the chicken was super dry. Definitely do not get it. The savory stack was also very bland as well. My friend got the banh mi though and the flavor was better but still not amazing imo.

Yelp
I loved this place! There is a cute outdoor seating area that's partially enclosed so you can do outdoor dining here even if it is raining! There were also a handful of tables and it's on a quiet street - I've passed by here a lot of times and it seems like they usually have some outdoor seating open. My partner and I ordered the granola bowl and the roasted cauliflower bowl. The granola bowl has yogurt, granola, banana, strawberries, blueberries, and coconut shavings. I am a big yogurt/granola person so I really liked it!! The roasted cauliflower bowl was similarly very good. The sauce was delicious - I think it was a pesto based sauce - and the pickled onions were also a nice addition! Overall the prices were a little high but for the area it is expected. There were not a lot of other vegetarian items on the menu, it looked like we could have gotten a sandwich version of the cauliflower bowl but that was about it. Given that there were only a couple things we could try on the menu, I'm not sure if I would come here regularly but I did have a great experience!
google avatar

Sandra M.

Yelp
I love the Vietnamese coffee and avocado with toast. The Vietnamese sandwich I wish had more protein but still yummy. The cookies are delicious when they have them.
google avatar

JoAnn A.

Yelp
Meh. Disappointing but willing to try again. Turmeric shrimp sandwich: seemed pretty tasty but I couldn't be sure since it was so empty. And I don't mean barely any shrimp but full of veggies and sauce, barely anything! I'll probably try a smaller item because I'd love to love this place like everyone else does around here!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
They ran out of everything when I came over. Disappointed I really wanted to try Avocado toast based on all the reviews that was left here. They didn't even have drinks to serve their clients.
google avatar

Yelp
First experience ordering food in America turns out to be nice. The cashier is patient with me when I did not understand the words he used to mean did I wanna eat here or take them food out. Then he explained it to me. Good.
google avatar

Bevano L.

Yelp
I tried their bahn mi sandwich before which was good. I tried again today and added fried egg (+$1) but this time I'm a little disappointed. The pork belly was good. It's fat and juicy. However, the bahn mi does not seem to have any sauce. I had to put my own Mayo and hot sauce to lift up its flavor profile. Maybe cause it's a take out, the bread wasn't crusty anymore.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Good combination of brunch foods and drinks. Granola bowl was awesome. Coffee is delicious and Vietnamese foods are tasty. Good seating inside and outside sidewalk pavilion.
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
We've gone here twice and both times it has been dirty inside. I could excuse this if the lattes were anything more than mediocre. My fiancé actually felt as though something in his latte was spoiled. HOWEVER, their customer service is absolutely awful. Downright rude! They were almost upset that we were there giving them business. Never again.
google avatar

M S.

Yelp
The place is nice, but the workers act like they don't want to be there, one female worker in particular, who had a nose ring stated she was looking forward to Spring Break, and seemed like that was all she could think about. She should know that her job helps pay for that Spring Break and if she doesn't do it well, maybe she should get replaced and so she won't be able to afford Spring Break in the first place
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
We ordered the avocado toast topped with an egg over easy. Avocado toast was superb. The bread itself was rustic and thick. Believe it or not, it's easy to mess up avocado toast based on dozens of previous experiences at other cafes. Short grain takes great pride in their avocado toast. This is a must order item. Avocados were perfectly ripened, radishes were fresh, pickled onions were indeed pickled perfectly and egg was spectacular. For $9, it's a rather filling meal. Savor each bite because it's full of deliciousness. Vietnamese iced cold brew was fantastic as well! Vietnamese Coffee is one of those beverages that's hard to find in most cafes. Short Grain masters Vietnamese Cold Brew. Not too sweet, not too creamy; it compliments the avocado toast quite well. They use dark beans, so the Vietnamese Coffee has a nice bitter taste. What I particularly enjoyed about their coffee was it didn't weigh me down and make me feel like I just drank 100 grams of fat. Nice and light! Great beverage to grab and go. The cafe itself has about 5 tables and plenty of charging ports as well as complimentary WiFi. They accept credit cards and deliver on Grubhub if you're too lazy to walk for the best avocado toast of your life!

Silvia Alejandra S.

Yelp
I love this place! And it could be amazing! The food when you eat there is delicious ! But I don't like to go to eat there because the employees are very inhospitable! (The ones on the counter ) Usually I order food and the most of the times is good bad today was veryyyyyyy bad! The coffees were cold and the poor packaging made them spilled! They pancakes were swimming on the maple syrup, the sandwich was extremely soggy! So sad because the place has so much potential
google avatar

Yelp
I love the grain bowl here! I ordered the curry chicken bowl and it came with brown rice, salad and picked onion. Very delicious. The only downside for the cafe is the smell indoors is not very pleasant. Sitting outside is fine.
