The 16 Best Restaurants in Hilo, Hawai‘i - Eater

"Maria Short cultivated her childhood passion for baking while attending culinary school at Baltimore International College and graduating from L’Academie de Cuisine’s pastry arts program with honors. While teaching Merchant Marines how to cook, Maria met her husband, Dien, a Hawai‘i native who left after high school to see the world. Together they opened Short N Sweet in 2004 in Hawi, the northernmost town on the Big Island, before moving to a larger facility in Hilo in 2010. You’ll find a variety of pastries and luxurious made-to-order cakes, including the bestselling Hilo Bars: freshly ground macadamia nut flour, from sister company Kipuka Mills, added to an oatmeal cookie base, topped with a chess pie-like butterscotch filling, and sprinkled with more crunchy macadamia nuts. The Liliko‘i Bar, another local favorite, combines a shortbread base with liliko‘i curd, made with fruit sourced from East Hawai‘i Farms. Come hungry; you’ll want to try everything." - Maya-Lin Green

"A Bakery for the Simple and Sweet Perfect for a breakfast or lunch, drop by Short n Sweet Bakery Market Cafe in Hilo for a refreshing bite to eat that will kick start your day and send you off on an afternoon of volcanic adventures or gallery gawking on the Hilo side of the Big Island. Maria and Dien, your bakers, create all their breads and sweets from their kitchen. You will taste the homemade goodness in their sandwiches, pastries, and custom cakes. Google
Day one of the trip and I've found the bakery I want to eat at every day! The pastrami sandwich on panini was amazing. And their drip coffee was perfect. They also had all kinds of sweets I might have to check out on future trips on!

Barry Sullivan

Google
We stopped in here for some sweet snacks to have later on in the morning. Nice tasty " flat croissant" ,and a macnut coffee cake. Paired well with coffee later in the day!

Google
First day on the island. Hotel coffee was mud almost killed me. So we ventured here for coffee breakfast sandwiches and macadamia nut coffee cake. In a strip mall and only patio seating. But everything was delicious.

Google
I had a really terrible experience here. First of all, the prices are ridiculous – they picture a simple egg and cheese sandwich, which costs $15, and then when I asked to swap the bread for a croissant, they charged an extra $5 just for that. Their espresso machine was broken, so I ordered an iced coffee instead, and even though there were no other customers waiting, it took them almost 25 minutes to make it. On top of all that, the staff was extremely unwelcoming. My kids were quietly exploring some items in the store, and the person at the register treated them like a threat, constantly telling them not to touch or break anything, making us feel extremely uncomfortable. The cashier also had a very negative vibe overall – cracking rude jokes about us to share with other workers behind the counter. Honestly, it felt like they were trying to find ways to overcharge and make customers feel small at the same time. I will never go back here. Terrible service, overpriced food, and a toxic atmosphere.

Google
It is a great bakery offering a wide variety of pastries and desserts. The staff is incredibly welcoming and readily answers any questions about their sweet treats. During our visit, they generously offered complimentary samples of the brauni.

Dragan Milanovich

Google
We read it had a great banana cream pie. They did not have any but they had some other great stuff. The bakery has a passion for their craft. They know what they are doing and are innovating on local flavors. I highly recommend them!

David Langill

Google
I was underwhelmed. $14.95 for the smallest breakfast bowl I have ever seen. The menu linked on Google advertised $9.95. My son's croissant didn't taste buttery and was more chewy than flaky.

Tom Pettine

Google
Pics of menu are extremely outdated. Breakfast bowl was meh. Eggs tasted powdered. Potatoes were soggy. Tiny portion. With 20% tip total was $17.74 for a single breakfast bowl that probably contained 9oz of food. Left hungry. Won't be returning.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Their Hilo bar is beyond delicious! I also ordered the Lilikoi bar and the Lilikoi macaron. Everything is amazing. The folks who work there are so nice, and I have a feeling we will be going back there again while we are here on vacation. I wish I could rate them a 10!

Yelp
Looking for a quick breakfast option, and this spot fit the bill so we paid a quick visit! I got the breakfast bowl, carrot cake mini loaf, and lilikoi bar! I will say pricing seems higher than average. The breakfast bowl was...decent. It's kinda a small portion and not superrrr appealing in a small takeout container. But I will say, the actual food was hot and tasty! Eggs were a soft texture, potatoes were nice and soft. Ham mixed throughout. Desserts were much more memorable. Not overwhelmingly sweet, both had a nice texture, and they tasted GREAT. I'd personally recommend coming here for desserts, rather than the entrees. Still great! PROS: - parking is easy, location easy to find - staff are friendly - desserts are not too sweet, have good texture, and taste great CONS: - pricing is higher than average - breakfast bowl is kinda small portion and not too appealing

Yelp
Our bill was over 80.00 for a box of baked goods. We thought it was excessively high, but thought it might be because of the dubai chocolates we bought which were 12.00 each. These chocolates were unremarkable, and the flavor was not what we had thought it would be. we have two left that haven't been touched and it has been 3 days now. The other two I took to a gathering and shared it by cutting it on a cutting board in bitesized pieces. after each person took a bite, no one picked up another piece. Other items still in the box: One chantilly chocolate cream puff. We only ordered 2. the one we tried was dry, flavorless, and seemed to be missing ingredients...namely sugar. it was tasteless and not joyful at all. It was not a puff. it was hard and seemed old. we ordered 2 oreo cookies, and 1.5 cookies are left in the box. Again, it seems like they did not get the recipe right. The flavor is very nothingness and the texture feels grainy and not cooked well though it is cooked all the way through. Sad that we lost so much money, the pricing is wrong and the recipes are off.

Yelp
This bakery I wanted to order my son's birthday cake and we all sadly got sick and then our vehicle is currently not working so we had to cancel his party and make a cake at home! But when I tell you I cannot stop thinking about this bakery and the birthday cake my husband cold coworker had from this place I am not lying I have never had a better cake! I did go in and had the best experience from Koa and even got to meet the baker the legend herself Donna! The ingredients are made in house and are all made with raw ingredients no seed oils or preservatives no harmful toxic yucky artificial coloring! The cake I did experience was a huge heavy thick and delicious cake that was filled with so much flavors and every bite was melt in your mouth mix together hit the taste buds like heaven on earth sends a baby from storks fairy tell experienced from your senses! Like when I tell you I am craving this Carmel layered cake I feel like it was made with addictive additives because I cannot forget this cake!!! It's been months! So go! Also very cool because they can do printable edible images they can custom the cake to your event they can custom the flavor to your pallet and they can bring the theme alive with the size for your party needs! I can't wait to experience this place again! They also do have menu options you can go order bagels and coffee and they have items for order fresh! I was told the cheese cake is one you have to try from a returning customer when I went in!!! I like also add that Donna the baker and I believe the owner was great she took pride and took time to inform me of her work! She took time to listen to my experience with her cake and my son's likes and told me what I should get which I love! Any kind of help I can get in life I will take!!! Also she knew the importance of having no artificial coloring and to have raw ingredients which I as a mom now understand the importance of!!! I can't wait to be able to order a custom cake through this bakery one day! Go support local small business like this one!!!

Yelp
This was recommended to me by another foodie who was sitting next to us also waiting patiently for food at a very popular eatery in Pahoa. I was impressed to find the interesting selection of fancy pastries at this cute bakery/ cafe located in Hilo Shopping Center. You can also get breakfast and lunch. April the foodie recommended a "white dessert" and thanks to other Yelpers I was able to deduce it was the Silvana. A layered pastry with cream on top and an interesting layer of sticky nutty goodness in the middle. It was very good but a bit too creamy and buttery for my lactose intolerant self. The Hilo bar was like a rich, flat blond brownie chucked full of macadamia nuts and bits of coconut. Also yummy! But the star for me and my mom was the Kona bar (?), a divine bar of rich dark chocolate with little bits of crunch that add a nice contrast in texture! Winner!!

Yelp
Waiting for a response as I have emailed you guys. Looking forward to resolving this issue.

Yelp
0/5 stars. We got married in Hawaii and ordered a 9"strawberry cake. Not one person finished there slice. the cake had no flavor and had the texture of bread. I expected atleast something edible for over $200. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
My husband and I couldn't decide what to get so we ended up getting a lot: - Banana Roulade - Lilikoi Bar - Roasted Pineapple Bread Pudding - Mac Nut Coffee Cake - Silvana - Hilo Bar - Lilikoi Marshmallows I really enjoyed everything. The Lilikoi Marshmallows were hands down my favorite thing. I could have eaten 10 bags of them by myself. My next two favorites were the Hilo Bar and the Silvana. I'm glad we stumbled upon this place when we were in Hilo.

Yelp
We tried the German chocolate brownie and the macadamia nut coffee cake. Both were very good. We got to sample their coconut shortbread cookie, which was very good also. Service was great. Nice atmosphere with tables outside to eat and talk story.
google avatar

Kekai W.

Yelp
You order inside and they give you a buzzer when your food is ready to be picked up. The wait was pretty long but we were waiting for 6 total sandwiches. The food was a bit skimpy for what they charge. I was told to come here and that the food was really really good, I felt a bit left down because it was hyped up so much. Maybe if it wasn't as hyped up. Great service, nothing to complain about there. They do have tables and chairs outside which was nice. Not bad but nothing special, give it a try if you want to support local!

Yelp
Bakery items were alright, salted caramel cupcake a little dense & doesn't taste like caramel. They have items in the cases with no pricing on them. So for each individual item you're not actually sure how much it costs. The girl at the counter didn't even know the prices off hand, she had to look into her register screen. Also, ordered a passion tea & I didn't know you put a small cube of ice and not fill the drink to the top. Or at least make it appear that the drink is full. Not sure I would make a return here and go out of my way. Overheard them tell another customer sorry they're closed. it's like 2pm and your door is open. ‍

Yelp
Their bread pudding wasn't our favorite but this was more than offset by a very tasty crème brûlée cupcake. We'll call it a wash... 4 stars...

Yelp
Ordered a cake for a surprise birthday dinner. It was amazing. Looked amazing. Frosting was light. Chantilly was fantastic & went great with the German chocolate. Service was excellent. Walked us thru how to prepare cake for serving. Ambiance of the shop was great. Good energy. Very welcoming & it was hard to leave with just the cake.

Sharon N.

Yelp
I have always loved Short and Sweet bakery. Their sandwiches are good and their salads are better. Their pastries are really delicious. I just selected a box of assorted sweet treats for a coworker's birthday celebration and as usual, we divided everything into bite sized morsels so we could try everything. Our tried and true favorite is the banana roll which is so amazingly light, but we also just discovered a new favorite-the oat Mac nut bars...mmmm
google avatar

Katt O.

Yelp
The people at the counter very nice ... but if you are coming to get Hawaiian sweet bread like you have seen on the food network... you will not get it... it was the previous owners. Ordered a croissant: it was burnt and dry ... a croissant is my way of comparing bakeries... unfortunately it did measure up ...
google avatar

Anthony T.

Yelp
I really enjoyed many of the baked goods my wife and I shared. But the one that stands out among the rest for me personally was their Silvana. I still dream about it to this day. When I return to Hilo, I'll be sure to come back to order a box of them.
google avatar

Kellie B.

Yelp
Delicious confections! The cakes were spot on and my squished croissant was the highlight of my week.

Rodney M.

Yelp
Unfortunately it was not what we read in other reviews. went in with high expectations from other reviews. Ordered the Chantilly German Chocolate 6" birthday cake hoping for or expecting a moist rich German Chocolate cake and a Chantilly filling. The cake was dry, there was no Chantilly filling, instead we had a very basic dry chocolate cake and butter icing filling and topping... not worth the $40 - 6" cake. The staff was great and friendly. Hopefully it was just an off day for them ... but I will probably not go back.

Yelp
This has been one of my go-to places for the last couple years -- enough so that I would sometimes arrange shopping/errands so that I would land here for lunch, which usually concluded with something sweet. All the bakery items I've had are great -- lilikoi bars, donuts, banana bread, cupcakes. BUT I'm feeling grump today because they've discontinued the menu item that brought me in for those lunch stops, the Macnut Curry Chicken Salad. It was a light, flavorful, healthy lunch that offered the extra bonus of allowing me to feel a bit less guilty getting a cupcake afterwards. The sandwiches and breakfast items I've had there are okay (albeit a bit pricey), but this salad was special and unusual, and it's gone. I'll be visiting less often.

Yelp
Short and Sweet is a cute bakery in Hilo Shopping Center that also serves hot and savory food. We did an online order for the food and also picked up dessert when we got to the store. I decided to get the vegetable panini, as well as the PB&J. Both sandwiches were served on thick slices of bread. The ratio of bread to filling was a little too much for me. There were a variety of vegetables in the panini, such as bell peppers, eggplant, and onions. It was good, but nothing special. The PB&J was way better than your regular sandwich you would make at home. I think it was the jelly that made the sandwich better than the rest. There are a wide variety of desserts available in a display case, but the macarons were the most eye catching. There were about a dozen flavors of macarons, and I ended up trying the fruity pebble one. It was so good! It tasted just like the cereal, and the texture of the macaron was perfect. I will definitely be back to try all the different flavors of macarons.

Lynn O.

Yelp
Short n Sweet has so many delectable sweets but we love their salads and sandwiches. Everything we've tried is delicious!
google avatar

Sadie N.

Yelp
''Twas good but spendy, which was expected. Loved the lilikoi flavor but the cheese cake part was a little toooo creamy for me. The Nutella cake was the best, would go back for that again any day. The crème puff was interesting, it was good and simple, like the bottom was a macaroon. Not pictured was a mocha macaroon, was very small but flavorful, simple.

Yelp
We kept coming back during our week in Hilo. There were so many tempting things to try on the menu, and we were never disappointed. It's been a few weeks since we left Hilo and I'm still daydreaming about those Hilo bars. The egg and cheese sandwich was delicious and filling, great for an active day. Everything is made fresh, and Koa, who helped us, was more like a tour guide in the way he introduced different items and helped us narrow down our choices each day. Definitely recommend, Short n Sweet is a local treasure!
google avatar

George R.

Yelp
Breakfast bowl nicely spiced with paprika, good really well with the smokey bacon. Focaccia on breakfast sandwich soft and tasty. Pleasant eating space in front of the store. At 8am on Wednesday we had the place to ourselves, with more people trickling in at 8:30. Had both the lilikoi shortbread bar and lilikoi cheesecake. Both tasty but the bar was better at delivering the likikoi flavor.
google avatar

Joey M.

Yelp
The customer service is always great. You can taste the fresh ingredients in their food and desserts. They use good quality ingredients. The Silvana is my favorite dessert and the Greek salad was another great choice.
google avatar

Alea E.

Yelp
Short n Sweet never fails me when I have a sweet tooth. The staff is always friendly and helpful when they have new items and I have questions, they go beyond when packing up your goodies to make sure they are secure for the ride home. The store front is small and you have to wait outside sometimes but it's worth it, I love the way they display everything so neatly in the cases so you can see every detail of each confectionary delight.

Nahoalii K.

Yelp
Indulge in a delightful selection of freshly baked goods, cakes, and paninis, among other delectable offerings. They have great customer service & the environment is so welcoming! This establishment is a renowned fixture in Hilo and is highly recommended for anyone visiting the area.

Daniel W.

Yelp
I purchased a 6" cake. Cake was very dry with bad texture. I think it was previously frozen. I called the bakery to let them know and wanted a return call from manager or baker. Lady on phone took my name and number and said no would return my call. If they at least they tried to make it right I would be ok. Bakery to not return my call reflects that they are tired and my be should retire from the business Luckily a friend bought a cake from Safeway. It was way better Everyone ate the Safeway cake. Short and sweet cake was old and tired like the baker who bakes it
google avatar

Mama W.

Yelp
Rebecca Akau & Sasha Rolan were absolutely great, they both helped us out since this was our first time at this bakery in Hilo. We purchased a lot of delicious items that we really enjoyed.

Felly C.

Yelp
I finally got to stop by. I got some cupcakes, baklava and other assorted random sweets. It was good. My favorite was this white dessert I got but I couldn't remember the name of it, it starts with an S. It was my favorite. I'd go back for that! I like the salt caramel cupcakes over the chantilly but both were good. I also had a million dollar bar that my husband loved. You go inside to place your order and then they will give you an alarm vibrating thing that goes off when your order is ready. My thing was broken, I waited a while. It's ok tho. The worker came outside, apologized and handed me my order.
google avatar

Katherine M.

Yelp
If there was an option to leave zero stars I would. Their business name "short n sweet" defiant fitting.... Not only is their staff rude... but I must admit they almost ruined my wedding. Now if I had ordered a cake for let's say a birthday I would be upset but let it slide as birthdays come every year... however a wedding is something that we can't get a repeat (under most circumstances). With that having been said.... Because I didn't pay a remaining hundred something dollars 21 days prior... they cancelled my wedding cake order, only to find this out THE DAY OF MY WEDDING. Now... the baker I believe her name was Donna was not only rude... but informed me that the only way to make my two tier cake would be to make the one tier a different flavor. Considering that it was the day of my wedding I agreed to it as long as it "looked" like I wanted.... So I had a two tier cake with two different flavors.... Not only that... the cake was falling apart before even leaving their establishment and while my friend went to pick it up she said it looks like it's slouching over... she then asked the baker "did you put this together hot? Because it looks like it's falling apart?" Here she responded... "the last time I checked I was the baker" hahaha wow.... Great customer service.... Before the cake came to wedding location I emailed the owner asking to reimburse me for the deliver charge as is was not delivered.... They said no refunds due to the fact that I signed a contract... Also that they would charge me an additional 25% for accommodating our "cake needs on short notice" Their apology was that of a robot... not genuine or sincere. You would think that since they highly boast about being on the food network that they could at least put a two tier cake that would stay together.... If it wasn't for my friends putting the cake together with chopsticks, freezing it, and the florist being kind enough to send us cake flowers last minute. THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO CAKE, and honestly no cake would have been better than the cake given to us. If you're looking for a local bakery with great customer service... KEEP LOOKING BECAUSE SHORT N SWEET BAKERY is to arrogant to admit their fault and touch bases with their customers...

Tiffany L.

Yelp
My parents, husband, and I stopped in here for breakfast before we began our day exploring the Volcano. While it was small and more of a to-go place, they had some outdoor seating options. The service was absolutely wonderful and so helpful. They had a variety of fresh sweet and savory menu options. We each got something different and enjoyed all of it. Great coffee, too!!
google avatar

Jeracah L.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwich all day on fresh baked focaccia (I skip the meat and sub tomato and avocado ). Lovely bakery items. I wish they would bring back the dulce de leche bar, it was heavenly. I'm not a fan of macarons, but my daughter is and they always have a great selection of flavors. Limited, but nice outdoor seating area. They recently added some much needed umbrellas for shade.
google avatar

Gabriel P.

Yelp
Disappointed that two of the three items I wanted to try wasn't available. The rainbow cookies which was at the top on my list. I was told they make it a few times a year or special order. Didn't ask how many you need to order. Second on my list was the lilikoi (passion fruit) bar. Third on my list Was Marshmallow squares. Bought the Lilikoi and Macadamia Nut combo pack. The texture of the marshmallow was perfect. I was surprised it stood up to flight back home to Honolulu. My first bite on the marshmallows was three days after i bought it. Macadamia flavor was a little flat. Lilikoi flavor was pretty good. I would buy it again.

D J.

Yelp
I asked if the croissants were baked this morning and they said it was, so proceeded to purchase two. Unfortunately they weren't fresh, they were stale. Not buttery as when fresh baked. What a shame.
google avatar

Fely S.

Yelp
I bought few sweet breads to ship to Oahu and I got for myself and it was really good. The only thing is, due to COVID-19 you can't go in the shop. You order what you want from a little window.
google avatar

Kanoe P.

Yelp
Came here on a whim after seeing their old location signage saying they moved and so glad we did!! Cute little location with amazing bakery items! We had the breakfast sandwich and ordered bakery to go. Will be back!
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
The coffee isn't stellar, but the sweets are. Cute little shop with creative baked good options.
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
Quaint bakery / cafe with tempting pastries. Breakfast Special was toasted foccacia with choice of filling along with fluffy scrambled eggs. I had the tomato and avocado version. Yum! Tried the coffee cloud, a meringue with coffee cream and lots of chocolate shavings. Ono and light! Also bought lilikoi marshmallow. So light and fluffy.
google avatar

Leilani R.

Yelp
Cute little bakery/cafe. Came in specifically for the Hilo bar and homemade Oreos. Hilo bar was good. My opinion is it needs to be baked longer. Flavor is good but the gooey is too gooey; almost has that undercooked feeling going on. Homemade Oreo cookies weren't that great to me. My daughter who loves Oreos didn't care for it too much either. Don't know if the cookie part is too thick or what but it's nothing spectacular.
google avatar

R K.

Yelp
The best sandwiches in Hilo town!! Bakery fresh bread and best pastries around. You won't be disappointed.

Ryan K.

Yelp
Can't even put into words the yumminess this place creates. Return visits most definitely.
google avatar

Lillie S.

Yelp
They have quite a good amount of pastries, bread and mini pies. I honestly had a hard time choosing only two, my husband chose the banana cream pie. The Banana cream Pie, Nutella Chocolate Mousse Cake and Lilikoi (Passion Fruit) Cheesecake were delicious. My Vanilla Latte was just ok, no problem though. I went for the pastries not the coffee haha. Staff was very friendly, attentive to any questions we had. The establishment was clean inside and out. Sitting area is available inside and outside.

Eileen U.

Yelp
My friends and I have always enjoyed the breakfast panini which they have had since their first location in the old Robert's Bakery locale. My son who was visiting from Oahu loved the lox and bagel, baklava and lilikoi desserts. He will definitely return on his next trip to Hilo.
google avatar

Amber C.

Yelp
Flipping RAD LITTLE BAKERY! We were lucky enough to be there on Sunday, which afforded us the only on Sunday amazing sweet bread French toast. We followed that up with a grilled PB&J, a light and fluffy not-too-cream-cheesy iced cinnamon roll, and a latte. Everything was AWESOME! If there's anything for constructive criticism it was the latte was a little watery, but we're from Oregon where espresso is god so that could just be regional. Later on we've got a homemade Oreo that is sure to be killer. If you come here, don't miss the grilled PBJ!! *please pardon the photos, everything was taken mid-meal when we'd realized we we're so stoked we were destroying our food
google avatar

Diep L.

Yelp
We decided to try this place out as it was on the way to our destination. You currently cannot dine in here, which was fine with me. I ended up getting a lilikoi macaron and a pie (don't remember what type) and both were delicious! I wish that they had a little bit more options as the cheesecake I wanted had ran out. However, I did arrive later in the day so that was understandable. The person working there was very nice. The credit card machine was having some trouble so I had to pay with cash, so I would just be prepared in case something similar like that happens in the future.
google avatar

H C.

Yelp
I honestly don't know why I came back in here again. I've tried the baked goods before and was unimpressed. Now with the covid measures you have to order your baked goods without seeing them first. They are at least 12 feet away in a case behind the order area. I was unable to see the tiny bread pudding serving before I ordered it. It's a third of what you get elsewhere for twice the price. And it was so bland no one even wanted to eat it. Not even cinnamon in it! I'm done trying this place. For some reason the staff is always rude as well. Every time, for years now. I don't get it. It's not hard to be nice to customers.
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
This place is such a gem. I've ordered custom cakes for parties but never had the chance to order off the menu until today. I got the most delicious breakfast sandwich with egg, ham, Swiss, on fresh baked focaccia bread. The ham was fresh off the bone and incredible. Fresh baked bagels with the most delicious veggie cream cheese. It literally had chucks of fresh veggies. Soy latte and their fresh baked Oreos for my kids. I got my whole order for $26. You can't beat that for the quality you're given. Love Love Love this bakery.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop and bakery. They are not allowing guests inside during Covid, but you can order at the front and they have a couple of sitting areas directly outside. Food and coffee were yummy. Highly recommend, will definitely be back.
