"Short Stop is another top Metairie’s po’ boy shop, a decades-old, family-owned shop with an old-school vibe and attentive service. A king-size debris-style roast beef easily feeds two. There are three options for size, which is helpful if you’re looking to try a few, like the hot sausage, catfish, or the carb-laden French fry, dripping with roast beef gravy." - Eater Staff

I come here somewhat frequently and have always had good service and consistent Po-boys. This time around was not that. The shrimp Po-boy that I had ordered was made very lazily to the point that I had to return to have it remade. Very messy Po-boy. The portions are not the same anymore. Very disappointed, won't be back.

Short Stop Poboys, located in Metairie, Louisiana, is a restaurant that dares to dream big with its diverse selection of poboys for lunch and dinner. We purchased two regular shrimp poboys that were generous in length and overflowing with small, lightly battered shrimp. The portion size is truly satisfying. The French bread was light and airy, with pieces carefully removed to create a hollow that perfectly accommodated the generous shrimp filling. The primary flavor on the shrimp was not a seasoning blend but just plain salt and the poboys were dressed with a few tomato slices, shredded lettuce, and mayonnaise applied with a delicate touch. Although the service and ambiance were good, the food has the potential to soar to even greater heights. The flavor was decent, but the bread could benefit from additional condiments, as it was somewhat dry. Notably, the restaurant does not provide condiment packets for customers who wish to take some with them. However, I firmly believe it is worth a visit.

This is the place to go for a quick poboy at a decent price. They have just about a poboy for everyone with so many types. I got a shrimp dressed with american cheese. It was good. The shrimp was small but plenty. It's a sandwich, so size doesn't really matter. The roast beef was good, too. They shave theirs.

Google
Little too busy for me. The food was great but if you don't like a lot of people don't go here. They expect you too know where to order and sort of treat you like cattle. I guess they got so many people they are rough in this place, not polished but great food. I would say give it a try.

Google
This is my favorite poboy spot. They make the best poboys in town. My favorite is hot sausage patties. Sometimes the line is out the door but it's worth the wait. Staff is always friendly and it's a great spot for a sit down lunch if you have the time. Try the stuffed artichoke!

Ordering online was easy We arrived a bit too early from promised time and there was plenty of parking available Order was correct Enjoyed a shrimp poboy! They have a drive thru window for pick ups Friendly staff

The wife and I visited our kids and grandkids in New Orleans. They took us to Short Stop Po boys Deli Metairie, we got Roast Beef sandwich dressed, a crawfish Po boy, a Shrimp Po boy, and Chicken and sausage Gumbo. everyone loved everything we had we all recommend this place. You need to try it for yourself.

Google
It had been a while since I had a chance to hit up short stop. I was excited to be in the area so I could pop in for a bite to eat. The service was great, staff very friendly, bit the food wasn't what I remembered. I got cheeseburger poboy and some fries. The meat patties was obviously not made in-house and was much thinner than I remember. It also had very little flavor. The fries were room temperature. My total bill was under $20 which is hard to find these days, but i must say I was disappointed in the food.

Tommy R.

Yelp
I got the roast beef, shrimp, and oyster poboys, dressed. I found them unremarkable. Roast beef was debris, somewhat bland. Shrimp was very lightly battered. Bread was fine but not Leidenheimer or Riesling's as far as I can tell. Gobs of mayo. Folks were nice, lots of seating. The checkout system for takeout here simply sucks, unfortunately. You can't pay for your poboy before you get it while you're waiting around for ten minutes to get your poboy. They're serious about it too, I stood in line and got shoo'd when I showed up. (Extra confusing because the lady in front of me paid with only half her order in hand.) Instead you have to wait around for ten minutes letting your piping hot poboy cool in your arms to pay. What's the deal? They're afraid they ain't gonna make it or what? This fundamental misunderstanding of what people want out of a pickup poboy joint will keep me from coming back.

Yelp
Food was amazing, portions were huge and priced well, facilities were clean, and best of all the staff were super nice and friendly. What more could you want? I was traveling and my husband asked me to get him a poboy from here to bring to him. I placed the order and asked the staff to wrap it up securely as it's getting shoved in my backpack for a flight. Welll I was very surprised when I get this comically large sandwich that would not fit in my backpack. I had to use the extender zipper on my suitcase just to have space for it. Like this po boy was shockingly huge. Staff did a good job wrapping it and my husband ate it a few hours later and it was still just a little warm a very tasty. Would definitely come back!

Jake W.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite sandwich shop in the whole world. The sandwich menu is huge. Hot and cold po boys along with a big selection of seafood po boys. The roast beef po boy is out of this world. Get it dressed and thank me later. They offer great sides like gumbo and jambalaya. All delicious. They also have a wide offering of local chips and desserts and glass bottled Barq's root beer which is smashing. You order from a counter and the workers behind the counter are super friendly and fast even though the sandwiches are made to order and served wrapped in blank newspaper. The restaurant itself is an old school dinner sort of set up with booths. The walls are covered with Short Stop memorabilia from the shops long history. It's exactly what you imagine a NOLA po boy shop would look like but in a completely authentic way since the restaurant has been around for 60+ years. Just a fantastic place. It can get really crowded but the line moves fast. Stop here. Eat here. If you're like me, you'll come back time and again. Every time I'm in NOLA, this is my first stop.

Yelp
I have often found when visiting a city with an iconic food item, i try to seek out not so much where the tourists go, but rather where the locals go. Short Stop Po' Boys was recommended to me by a client, so I headed over that way after my last meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. Pulling into the driveway, I was buoyed by the confidence that this was going to be a wonderful meal. Fotst off to inspire this confidence was that there was no pretense or tourist trapping vibe to this place. It was a rather humble establishment and I usually find that the best food awaits us in these humble little mom-and-pop type hole-in-the-wall type establishments. Another giveaway was that the parking lot was filled with cars. Walking in, ot was definitely a no-frills type place. You order at one counter and pay at another. You pick your food up when they call your name. I ordered a crawfish po' boy, gumbo and onion rings and I have to say that I was blown away by how good the food was. Short Stop Po' Boys definitely delivers and I will definitely be returning on my next trip to New Orleans.

Yelp
Great Roast Beef Poboy and Brownies. The orders are made correctly. The service is friendly and quick enough. The ambiance is casual and clean.

Lucas G.

Yelp
Stopped by for a second time and of course wanted to try something different from the first time. Regular (9") roast beef poboy, with a small fry for less than $12. You cannot beat that. The roast is shredded into very small pieces, with good flavor. The gravy isn't exactly watery/thin, but not as thick as I would normally have a roast beef at home. The fries are still super good, they are just like McDonald's fries but better. They serve your food very fast as well. Stopped in at 5 pm and it was a little busy, we were in the car at 5:29 after eating and everything, that's how fast they are. Very good prices and especially good food. Absolutely a great spot for lunch or dinner

Dubach C.

Yelp
Man look. Hands down one of the best po boys spot in NOLA. Fresh to order, very soft French bread. Reasonably priced and extremely delicious. Im sold

Mary R.

Yelp
Best Po-boys in Metairie! Try the oyster, it's great. Quick service. Friendly staff. Very clean establishment.

Randy M.

Yelp
This is an updated review of Short Stop. My last review was during Covid. I was visiting family and my wife and I always go to Short Stop for Po Boys. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The food didn't disappoint as usual. (I don't remember the shrimp being smaller) There is plenty of seating and I notice a representative from the shop talking to patrons. Now I've seen some reviews about online ordering or the drive-thru. I've never ordered online and the drive-thru is for pick-up only NOT TO ORDER. Also, I'm not saying they have the best Po Boys in the city....I was partial to Check In/Check Out on Williams & Esplanade but they have closed down. But they have been around for decades and have built up goodwill in the community. The only downside is parking because they are crowded at lunchtime so be prepared.

Kevin K.

Yelp
My, how the mighty have fallen. I mean I know this will probably sound like a "Back in my day..." thing, but almost everything that was a draw about this place has taken a downward turn. The service here is significantly problematic, downright rude at moments. The prices are quite increased, despite the quality and quantity not being increased. The quality and quantity weren't as good as typical either, but then again, you shouldn't be messing up a po-boy in this city. On top of that, we ordered online in advance, went to pick them up about 15-20 minutes after, and were told it was still an additional 40 minutes. Come again? What's the point of ordering online when you can come in, wait in the line that generally moves decently fast, get your sandwiches, pay, and get out? Significantly ridiculous. To make matters worse, we ended up waiting a total of 50 minutes all to be told it would still be another 10-15 minutes and that there was no way to confirm cancelation of the order if we wanted to cancel. Make it make sense... There are tons of other places to get a solid po-boy in this city and without all of the hassle, even if this is the closest and used to be one of the better ones. Go elsewhere.

John R.

Yelp
Short Stop always has excellent food and great service. Traditional diner style seating and atmosphere.

Holly T.

Yelp
Grew up eating here. Service, food , nothing has changed. Best darn roast beef poboys on the South Shore. Extra napkins needed super sloppy.

Geoff M.

Yelp
The food is fine (but you can find better po-boys elsewhere). What is confusing to me is how inefficient their online ordering platform is in its implementation. If you order ahead through their online platform, you will have to wait 30-40 minutes more than it would take if you order in person. At least that was our experience in the post-lunch afternoon time, and it is problematic. It doesn't make sense that a mode for increasing the efficiency of your business is so problematic for the staff to put into effective practice. In terms of ambiance--it's a fast food joint without the "fast".

Cynthia K.

Yelp
This place is always rated tops and as a local, I really believe they are living off their past reputation. First, the potato salad is store bought. Taste is terrible. Potatoes are not cooked either. Second, roast beef is just " ok". Flavor is bland. Not well seasoned. Try Bears on Metairie rd. And if you have time, go uptown to Domilise.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I personally have not eaten many poyboys in my lifetime but my husband and his family (FIL was born and raised in New Orleans) are familiar with these dense sandwiches. It's a local spot that isn't trendy or fancy, but has stayed consistently good over the years and where many locals go for a hearty meal. Each sandwich is made to order and customizable. We tried the roast beef and shrimp versions, which were packed with protein and hit the spot but mild in flavor. MIL got the soft shell crab poboy, which was delicious but has a fishier taste than shrimp and a touch of bitterness. The parking is limited, depending on time of day, and we noticed several people parking along the neighborhood streets because it was difficult to find a spot.

Troy P.

Yelp
Best roast beef Poboy, add mayo and provolone. Meat ball excellent, and all others! Not many places left where you can get the neighborhood Poboy shop experience with a bottles barqs and bag of zapps.

BP P.

Yelp
Short Stop is a family tradition! We enjoy Roast Beef for a week when family comes thanks to bucket of gravy and several bags of meat!

Lee H.

Yelp
I got the Hot Roast beef & gravy. First time there. Wow! So fresh, & tasty. It's a good enough place to have waiting lines on weekdays. Definitely recommend this place.

Duane A.

Yelp
The best roast poboy in Metairie and new Orleans. I love how the roast beef is cooked and gravy.very fast service also. It is the best!

Rudolph F.

Yelp
For the price, the sandwiches are good. I will be going back to this place again. The sandwiches were fresh. I like that.

Angela

Yelp
The Po-Boys here are amazing. Food is done quickly and is always perfect. The gumbo is also good. The sizes are huge and you will definitely not leave hungry. It feels like a down-home diner. The prices are always affordable and the service is quick and everyone is super friendly. I go here about once a month. When I was gone from NOLA, this was the place I dreamed about.

Carrie G.

Yelp
This place used to be great. Convenient and reasonable prices with a large variety to choose from. Right by my neighborhood. Been going here for ages. I've been recently disappointed the last few times I've been. Try to preorder on website which doesn't give you the option of cash payment upon pick up. The website is so unuser friendly besides that the bread is different and doesn't seem like Leidenheimer true french bread anymore. I don't know if it's the weather & humidity at this time of year, not receiving fresh deliveries every day or what. It's chewy & disappointing. I don't have this problem when buying the same brand at the supermarket. Have you changed brands? Also when I walk in to order I don't like having to wait a half hour just to order and then stand in a long line to pay just for a sandwich

Chaquille J.

Yelp
The food was good. The price was super affordable. Me and my friends got the shrimp poboy. It had flavor, large portion size, fresh bread, and fresh garnishes. The service was disorganized. You order at the front door so it's not crowd friendly. Standing space is limited because you can't go far because they yell your name once your order is complete for pick up. I would go back but I'll try to go before lunch or after to miss the crowd.

Terry D.

Yelp
Food is fantastic, service is excellent, don't eat in that much, usually take out. Love the roast beef sandwiches.

Regina C.

Yelp
Great poboys. You can find choices not available at other shops. There's always a wait, but it's worth it. You order at the counter, wait for your sandwich, take it to the register to pay, then take it to go or see if there's room at one of the tables. Then enjoy.

Jessica B.

Yelp
Delicious PoBoys! Love eating my shrimp PoBoy here every time I visit this area! Great service!

Erika H.

Yelp
The service was good the employees were kind and welcoming. The soda brand Boylan was excellent. The shrimp in my poppy were not cleaned. I bit into the sandwich and there was a dark line of dirt. I then checked my sandwich and found they were all unclean. I had to throw it away. I had purchased a cat fish sandwich and it was super greasy and needed more than one small piece of catfish. The employees were awesome but I couldn't eat the food. Get a sandwich from the French Quarter!

Jesslin B.

Yelp
My parents and I love love LOVE going to short stop! I love the staff, very welcoming people ! The food is AMAZING! I have absolutely no complaints !

Barbara L.

Yelp
Short Stop has the best roast beef Po boys ever and the restaurant service is fantastic What at the hours are this on Saturday and Sunday

Donna S.

Yelp
Delicious roast beef. Good hamburger and the meatball is exceptional. The service is always as good as they can handle it, depending on how many people are in line. The down-home and simple quality of Russell's Shortstop is homey.

Gmarie H.

Yelp
I order thru UberEats here frequently. The Food and Service is exceptional!  The environment outside is picturesque. The atmosphere inside has that Old World Charm. The food quality is Savory, Flavorful 5 Star.. Reasonably Affordable Priced Menu. Budget-Friendly. Well-paced in a fast food work place..I can genuinely confirm that "SHORT STOP PO- BOYS" is committed to providing each customer with 1st Rate food, an act that demonstrates a genuine desire to satisfy, if not delight, a customer. They represent their Eatery Very Well. Respectfully Submitted Gmarie H. Cc:Uber Eats Cc: Google reviews Cc: Yelp

Yelp
Loved it and will be back. I'd only seen the commercials before this visit. I knew they were a long standing staple for poboys but now I know why. The size, the price, the fun guy behind the counter and the sheer options for poboys are all contributors to this 5 star experience. There was a line outside to get in but it was handled well by an employee and we entered within 10min. You order your poboys at the kitchen opening counter. The options for poboys are plentiful and the sizes are unusually large for the prices at a 6" small, 9" regular and a 14" (!!!) King. Even the kings are mostly under $10 except seafood options which are around $12-14. I had a small roast beef dressed for about $5.35! You don't see that often. We spilt a large fry, tasty, thin and crispy. All delicious. I'll definitely try a shrimp next time and maybe some meringue pie!

Robert G.

Yelp
Got the roast beef sandwich and it was excellent, will eat here again when in the area.

Lindsey B.

Yelp
Very delicious poboys. Can't go wrong with any of their food items. The service is pretty lacking but I guess what can you do at a time like this? Many rude people working at this metairie Poboy shop. I guess will be back though bc the poboys are too good to pass up.

Vivian R.

Yelp
What can I say? I can only vouch for the roast beef and oyster poboys... we prefer lightly fried oysters and they accommodate and it's wonderful!

William R.

Yelp
I have been coming to Short Short for many many years. I no longer live in Louisiana. So when I have the chance I only stop by. This Friday placed an order online. I was highly disappointed. The roast beef had very little gravy and taste needed salt or flavor. The shrimp was skimpy on the mayo and again very little taste. Both poor boys had again skimpy lettuce and tomatoe. I felt like it was rushed or are you cutting back? If I was not on road out, I would have returned the poor boys. Perhaps its time to find a new po boy place.

Lynne T.

Yelp
Outstanding Poboys! Yes, Simple and Fabulous, Amazing and HUGE! The long line speaks....yells! It's off the beaten path of most visitors to NOLA, but my cousin lives and dies by all things fabulous in Metairie Louisiana. He brags that folks just flock to NOLA BUT OH what joyous eateries abound in the secret city of Metairie. I must admit his recommendations are a hit. Such as this gem. All I can say is get to know your neighbors while standing in line to place your poboy order. Eat in or take it to go. We enjoyed the hour wait in line by chatting with folks from South Carolina, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Tennessee and TEXAS! But most often hometown Louisianans! Their secret is no moreeee! Ha! There were 100s of poboy shops in and around NOLA but the half-half shrimp and oyster was worth the wait.

Wendy C.

Yelp
My husband Andi always seek out small independently owned restaurants with top ratings/reviews. Short Stop PoBoys fit the bill and then some! Fantastic sandwiches and friendly helpful staff. I highly recommend anyone and everyone give this place a try. We had a roast beef and also shrimp PoBoys.

Bilin C.

Yelp
I've grown up eating here. The roast beef has always been my favorite!! This is my favorite po Boy shop!!

Ray S.

Yelp
Po boys are great. Lots of choices. Good portions for the money. Service is always good. Love the feel of the restaurant.

Kim D.

Yelp
The service is absolutely horrific. I just stood there for almost 5 minutes waiting for someone to wait on me and no one ever did so I finally walked up to the counter and asked if I was invisible and they said I will be with you in just a moment now there's no one in the store Short Stop can kiss my ass

Maria V.

Yelp
The condiments and dressings I asked for did not exist on this poor boy, and it was ice cold. I also ordered fries and asked for catch-up. No catch-up. Ice cold fries. I remember this place used to be awesome but this was my first and last time Getting food from them, years later

Matthew B.

Yelp
Decent Catfish, Shrimp and also Roast Beef po-boys here. I called-in an order for Zapp's chips, potato salad and 2 po-boys on a Friday after seeing their Lenten Friday ads and also the coupon on their app. I arrived at the drive-thru but had to pull around back of the building since my order wasn't quite ready yet (no problems.) She was very friendly and funny at the window (we talked about the issues they are having with old gift cards) and she also brought my order to my car out back. I drove off towards Causeway when I doubled checked my bag and noticed my large bag of Zapp's ($2.49) was missing. This was inconvenient to drive back in Friday traffic. I recommend the staff confirms all contents in the bag while handing off to the customer.

Steven S.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been to Short Stop. I live a mile away and have been over 100 times. That should tell you something. The other night I was craving a shrimp po boy. An unusual craving for me but I wanted one. Russel's is close so I called one in about 15 minutes before they closed. I haven't had a shrimp sandwich from there in quite some time. It was as good as it ever was. I got the king size bc I was hungry and I eat big. I had to stop at half. The shrimp were falling off the sandwich. The shrimp taste as they should. Some places the shrimp taste funny. Never at Shortstop. I like mine with mayo and lettuce. Their roast beef debris po boy was as good as it alway is. I had one just last week. There's a reason the parking lot is always full. The drive-thru Is a nice option not found often at restaurants.

Jowee T.

Yelp
Great food, but a very rude employee just told customers to form a line heading toward the door rather than down the aisle between tables. We were told that if there's not enough room we'd have to wait outside. It's 60° and pouring rain.

Chris K.

Yelp
Food is excellent and priced competitively. Service was great and food came out quick. Not the greatest looking from the outside, but the food was great for the price.

Belinda L.

Yelp
Short Stop Poboys is the best! I recommend it highly. Thanks for being here all this time Russell.

Nichole F.

Yelp
This place is NOT what everyone raves about! The fries are always soggy.. I ordered a fish poboy and got a shrimp and they were soft too.. I think ppl just like it bc it's familiar to them. I was not Impressed and I've tried it 3x to see if it was just a random bad day. No, the food isn't 's good

Tuan P.

Yelp
Food is great here gumbo is to die for. Poboys are also delicious. Specially the roasted beef
