Where to Drink at the Movies in Boston | Eater Boston

"This multiplex is another chain with more comfortable chairs. Unlike at the other theaters on this list, movie-goers at the Showcase SuperLux at the Street Chestnut Hill can order food from a full-service menu, which includes dishes like fried shrimp and steak frites. Wash it all down with a movie-inspired cocktail, like the 007, which is a take on the martinis James Bond enjoys. Shaken, not stirred, of course." - Terrence Doyle

Great place! I love coming back to watch movies here! Always clean and cheap prices for movie tickets!! 14$ for a reclined seat? Say less!! 3 y ago was 13$ and if you know inflation you also know that this 1$ is super cheap increase! Glad that they stay competitive, while keeping the quality! I drove yesterday from Framingham because this quality and price is unbeatable! Way better than AMC in my opinion!

Google
A great place to catch a movie. Yes you can wait for it to come to your TV but if you want an unbelievable experience on fully reclining chars with an extensive menu and a full bar, this is the venue for you. Or bring your own snacks to keep it somewhat affordable.

I don’t usually leave reviews, but this experience was so bad I couldn’t stay quiet. My wife and I went out for a rare date night — something we almost never get to do as two overworked parents. We were really looking forward to a relaxing night at the movies, especially after spending over $150 on tickets, food, and drinks at what’s supposed to be a luxury theater. At first, everything seemed fine. We ordered our food and even a second round of drinks. But about halfway through the movie, things took a nasty turn. We started noticing mice running up and down the stairs. We felt things brushing against our legs and arms, and when we looked down, we were disgusted to see mouse droppings all over the floor near our seats. After that, it was impossible to focus on the movie. We were constantly on edge, wondering when the next mouse would run past. I completely lost my appetite. You can even see in the photo I’ve attached — the lights are already on because the movie was over, and I still couldn’t bring myself to finish the food I paid for. I was too disgusted. It’s beyond unacceptable for any theater, let alone one advertising a “de luxe” experience, to have this kind of rodent problem. We have photos and video to prove it — this wasn’t a one-off issue. It’s clear the place is not being cleaned or maintained properly, and that’s a serious health and safety concern. This date night was supposed to be a treat for us, and instead we walked away frustrated, disappointed, and disgusted. I really hope management takes this seriously and does something about it — because no one should have to sit through that.

We had a good experience. We went to see beetle juice on opening day . Staff is informative and helpful . They are friendly and welcoming as well. The place is spotless including the bathrooms , well maintained. They have a big parking lot 🅿️ that’s free , they share with other vendors . Parking is not an issue . It’s pricey but worth the treat. We ate food it’s good and taste fresh , but it’s pricey .

The ac is WAY too high. The theater was freezing. I undesirable its hot outside but that actually felt like it was 33 degrees. And a 2.5 hour starts to feel like a walking freezer. Also the bar area was non existent . Is it being rebuilt or removed altogether. Last I wish the seats had usb/usb c chargers. Not all the heaters on seats work. Seats are comfy. Food is great value.

I went to see the new Jurassic Park Movie spent $110 $40 on tickets $70 on food which wasn’t even the worst part. The movie started at 9:30pm my bf and I got there at 9pm after we got our food we sat in our seats theater 2 c13&14 and a rat climbed out from the seats in front of us onto the wall and ran behind the curtain. We immediately left and the cinema gave us a refund for the tickets. I would not go back.

We’re extremely disappointed by our experience at this theater and feel it’s important to share what happened. We booked the 8:15 PM showing of Thunderbolt and spent over $150 between tickets, food, and drinks, expecting a relaxing, luxury movie night. To make it even more frustrating, this wasn’t just any night — we’re two overworked parents who rarely get a night out alone. This was our long-overdue date night, something we were both really looking forward to. And this is the experience we got. Everything seemed fine at first — we ordered food, and even a second round of drinks. But about halfway through the movie, we started noticing something that completely ruined the night: mice running up and down the theater stairs. It wasn’t just once or twice. We kept feeling things brushing against our legs and arms — and when we looked down, we were horrified to see mouse droppings all over the floor behind and beside our seats. At that point, we couldn’t focus on the movie anymore. We couldn’t even finish our food. The rest of the time, we were on edge, afraid mice were going to run across our feet or up our seats. The fact that this happened in a theater that promotes itself as high-end is unacceptable. The level of filth and presence of rodents is not only disgusting — it’s a serious health concern. We have photos and videos to back up what we saw, and it’s clear this wasn’t an isolated incident. We left feeling disgusted and incredibly let down — not just because of the environment, but because we spent a good amount of money on what was supposed to be a well-earned, peaceful night together. Instead, we got stress, discomfort, and a theater filled with rodents. We truly hope management sees this and takes immediate action. No one should have to go through this — especially not parents just trying to enjoy a rare night out.

The manager Michael Kerr repeatedly made me feel very uncomfortable by telling my friends and I that we would be observed during the movie, before we could even get past the Ticket Kiosk after the front door. My friend was asked to remove clothing because of its hood-after being made to change into a sweatshirt (with a hood)it was somehow fine.Food runner's were very kind, but Michael Kerr managed to ruin the entire experience. Never coming back here.

Yelp
My family and I frequent the Chestnut Hill movie theater, and while the food used to be decent, the quality has gone downhill lately. The last few times I've ordered, the food has arrived late, cold, and either undercooked or overcooked. This time, I tried the bento box and it was cold, lacked flavor, and honestly not even worth taking a picture of. For nearly $27, it wasn't worth it. I also had the pepperoni hot honey pizza, which was actually pretty good--but overall, I'm not sure I'll be ordering food from here again. It's just too expensive for such an underwhelming experience.

Yelp
The super Luxe is a premium movie going experience. The theater is lovely and spacious and the service is prompt. We ordered drinks in advance and then ordered food when we got seated. My friend had a crispy chicken on a salad which she said was delicious and I had the Luxedilla , which was a quesadilla and was also very good. My margarita was a little too sweet and seemed to be a little light on tequila. The seats are comfortable, but the head doesn't recline as much as others like those in AMC. Still, a mighty fine movie going experience.

Yelp
Every time I come here it's to watch a movie. The food is great. The service is great. Almost every thing is great except the chair heaters. They always stop working when you put them on high

Yelp
We had a super good time . Watching the movie beetle juice , The staff was super friendly. The movie was awesome. They have full service as they bring the food to you . Or you can get it yourself at the consession stand.

Yelp
I really enjoy this theater because of the size and the comfortability except this time my seat warmer didn't work. However I did take the opportunity to order from the seat and surprisingly my burger was delicious and I did order the guacamole except it came with salsa which I really didn't appreciate I mean if it's gonna say salsa and guac they should say that. I don't feel I got my money's worth but I got a shit ton of tortilla chips leftovers. I realize this is not a five star experience for experience diners, but for a movie goers, it beats just eating popcorn and candy.

Yelp
Awesome place to see a show. Comfy seats fun concessions that actually have pretty decent food from what I've tried so far and alcohol if you want it. Bonus: right next-door to Davio's for pre- or Post show food or drinks

Yelp
RAT INFESTED My girlfriend and I were enjoying the 9pm showing of Wild Robot on 10/10 at the Chestnut Hill location, when I heard a scratching noise right next to me. I turned around to see the biggest mouse right on the wall right above my girlfriend's head. We stood up, startled, and the rat disappeared. Wanting to finish the movie that we had paid for, we sat back down, and over the course of the next 10 minutes, saw 3 more mice in the vicinity of our seats. I told one of the cleaning staff about the mice after the showing, and he smirked as though he was aware of the situation. I asked for the manager's number to complain directly, and he said that the manager had already left. This is an unacceptable lack of hygiene, especially given the premium that we paid to watch this movie at a Superlux location.

Yelp
Love this theater! It's always clean, simple, and organized! I love that you can get food delivered to your seat. The pricing is great for what you get on the ticket price. The chicken tenders are amazing probably because they come from Davios! I didn't hang around much in the lobby yet but i will one day.

Yelp
Great options of movies usually, good is great and never had any issues. Saw Bob Marley: One Love and was good experience.

Yelp
Place was clean. Heated seats were very comfortable. Food and drinks were actually really good. The sweet potato fries and Thai chicken were delish.

Yelp
I wasn't impressed with this "Super"lux branch of Showcase. It has Davio's inside the theater, which is a fairly fancy restaurant with a hefty price tag of itself. The ticket price was a few dollars more than the Showcase back at home. Also, they didn't have cherry coke, which I've always managed to get at any theater, but I guess it's not Super enough to be on their list. The other noted enhancement is the chairs have 3 settings to recline and include a tray with a menu. Then you have staff walk around in the dark looking for who the order belongs to.
google avatar

Che C.

Yelp
I went to the Showcase Superlux to see Avatar: The Way of Water and the overall experience was a good one. The parking space was adequate, bathrooms were clean and the lobby had good lighting. The actual theater room was clean with the reclining and heated seats. We didn't partake in snacks because the line was super long and the place was super packed. Would recommend giving yourself a 30 min window before movie start time if you plan on ordering snacks. I also think there might be an option to order ahead and I would strongly recommend that. Great option for movie night....especially for a three hour long movie. Check them out.

Yelp
This is one of the nicest movie theaters I have ever been too. You can order food at your seat. They have a nice menu. It is pricy though. Ticket prices vary during different times of day. Ambiance is amazing. Chairs are reclining and very comfortable. Screen is huge. Very modern, a great experience.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been going to this movie theater for about 9-10 years now and it's always been a good experience. Made the switch to SuperLux after the AMC closed down. The cinemas are relatively small, some containing about 7-8 rows each. The seats are comfortable and recline. I usually go for LiteLux since it's cheaper. There doesn't seem to be much of a core difference between Lite and Super, though some cinemas have it where Super allows you sit in the back (easier on the eyes). Very strange. Tickets are around $15-20 for LiteLux. Food is expensiiiive, however. A medium soda will cost you about $7. Come here if you're looking to spend on The Street. Everything here is pricey. Or save your money.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE! Bought 3 tickets to see a movie here last night. Got there and the building was experiencing a power outage. Was told to call back the next day for a refund. Called today and was told they don't do refunds. Not exactly "superlux" of you to steal $60 from me.

Yelp
Such an amazing movie experience. It's clean, aesthetic, and overall quality is much better than other movie theaters around Boston. I would rather pay more to sit in a nice chair (that's also heated!!) instead of a cruddy/ filthy chair elsewhere. They also offer food services that deliver right to your seat. AMAZING!! Probably my go to movie theater as there are plenty of parking and food options around. Overall, just a pleasant experience.

Venecia W.

Yelp
I'm shocked that me and my boyfriend couldn't even watch American Fiction (a movie which plot is centered on race relations) in peace without being harassed by the staff. My boyfriend went outside to take a phone call when a white young woman employee chased him down accusing him of not having a ticket. Even upon showing the ticket to her she called for the manager. The manager arrived and proceeded to apologize to my boyfriend. In the midst of the apology the young white woman begun crying and asking the manager: "What about me?" I guess it's dangerous to be black in this movie theater. Hire better staff! Needless to say I will never step foot at this establishment again and I recommend that no other black person as well

Genevieve D.

Yelp
I loved this theater before the pandemic, but the experience has gone severely downhill. Last time I was there, a mouse ran across my foot and when I checked behind my seat, there were mouse traps hidden. I saw another running up the aisle. That grossed me out so much I was on edge the whole movie and didn't feel comfortable ordering food. I told the manager about it and he apologized but seemed unsurprised and didn't offer anything to make up for the bad experience. I emailed the parent company and never heard back. They know they are full of rodents but apparently don't care enough to close the theater long enough to deal with the problem appropriately.

Sanmita S.

Yelp
This theatre is awesome! I went to go see Inside Out 2, and the service was amazing and the food was great.

Yelp
Never had a bad experience here over the past two years we have frequented it! Comfy chairs, great bartender, efficient service and pretty clean. Prices are high and would be nice if they enforced loud talkers a bit more
google avatar

Maisha R.

Yelp
This is the epitome of a swanky theater. From the fancy light fixtures at the entrance to the bar and upscale lobby seating, showcase lives up to the "superlux" name. We arrived a little early and since we had some time to spare, we hung out at the bar and ordered drinks. The bartender was friendly and attentive. He actually ended up following us into the theater and taking our lunch orders - steak sandwich, wings, fries, and steak frites. As we waited for our food, we enjoyed the complimentary buttery popcorn and the spacious reclining and heated seats. They brought over blankets and water. A few minutes into the movie, our food arrived. It was good for theater food and they did better with the snacks - wings, fries, sandwich, dessert, rather than an actual entree such as steak frites. Thankfully our expectations weren't very high. The only issue that we had regarding service was that on my first visit, my dessert never came out. On my second visit, the service was excellent. They offer lux lite and Superlux seating. Both times we've opted for the more luxurious superlux experience. If you're looking for a really nice theater that charges a pretty penny ($28/ticket) for the little things - nice seats that warm up, popcorn, blankets, and seat meal service, this is the place to go.

Ryan P.

Yelp
Very rude staff. We bought tickets to a movie tonight and weren't allowed in the theater because we were a few minutes late. The movie had not even begun after previews. Very unhappy as a frequent customer.

Kylie M.

Yelp
THEY SUCK like all i wanted was to see the challengers movie and they wouldn't let me because i was 10 minutes late

Sam I.

Yelp
Great location, vibe, staff! Seating options are great. Love the screen size. Audio and sound were great as well, just the right level of volume for my preference.
google avatar

Yelp
I used to love this place. Waitstaff bringing you free popcorn, free water, and of course the $5 off the price of food. It was worth the $20++ cost of a ticket. Now, it's still more than $20 for a ticket and you get no popcorn, no water, and no discount on food. Why pay well more than any other theater when there's nothing here to make it worthwhile? Other theaters sell drinks and have food as well as concessions, but are much better priced.

Mr. T.

Yelp
Ordered food for the first time and the last time. Spring rolls were undercooked and actually cold in the middle. The chicken bites were better: lukewarm but at least cooked. Food is expensive given the convenience but someone needs to fire up the fryer.
google avatar

Nb N.

Yelp
This place has reaaally gone down in terms of service. Last three times consecutively I went to see a movie here, I ordered something by using the app and either one of my drink or food item was always forgotten. Have had to go out asking for it or have had to ask for refund.
google avatar

Fredo S.

Yelp
Horrible experience... came to see spider man the movie was exceptional, but the service in super lux??? The audacity!!!! Worst lux experience I've ever been too!!! I ordered food, M&M peanuts, Long Island Ice teas, Davio's spring rolls large popcorn... I didn't receive half of the things I just listed. After my movie was done I went to get a refund and was told I had to stand in this long ass line to do so... haven't been to the movies since Covid started an I won't come back here again!!!

Danilsh M.

Yelp
Way better then AMC! Good quality food directly to your seat was a nice touch. They also have heated and reclining seats as well!
google avatar

Sun K.

Yelp
I reserved my seat online with an understanding they were not serving food and drinks. I got to the theatre & asked the attendant if i could bring bottled water inside. She said no. Kinda stunned to see a man bring in two large slurpees for him and his friend Not only did my seat not recline back or foot rest tilt up, the movie was not what I expected. The synopsis for Night Shift was endearing, but in person it was truly boring. Don't waste your time. The End

Yelp
this is my favorite theater to come to by far -- every movie i have watched at this location, my sister and i have had the absolute best experience with the staff, who are so incredibly friendly. a few months ago i came here to see a movie while i was having a really terrible week. during the movie, my sister and i ordered food to our seats. later, we were very pleasantly surprised to receive complimentary/free milk and cookies. it absolutely made my day. tonight we are here for the 8pm showing of The Boys in the Boat. my sister and i ordered popcorn with extra butter, and when the staff noticed they forgot to add the extra butter (really not a big deal) they brought us over another bag of popcorn with butter, and a side of butter to drizzle on top of our other bag. this theater is always my first choice!!! thank you to the wonderful people that work here your small kindnesses mean so much additionally, the food is delicious, the movie theater is very clean, and the reclining seats are super comfortable.

Yelp
Alana was awesome. I like to come here once or twice a year to splurge on a nice movie theatre. I spent more on snacks for three people than on tickets, but Alana made it all worth it.

Desmond C.

Yelp
Me and my 2 friends went on an excursion to the movie theater to attend aqua man today, we had a horrible experience with rude staff, bad customer experience and it was horribly unorganized.

Mike G.

Yelp
I would give 0 if possible. My son and his friend went to see a movie today. My son and his friend were profiled and asked to search her bag "for safety reasons". When I called to address this issue it was brushed off as a practice to ensure no outside food would be brought in. .... A far stretch for the "safety reasons". Let's hope they get their story straight and act together....
google avatar

Harry W.

Yelp
Great movie theater. It cleans well. My advise for everyone that works on it, that when movie is over, don't rush to tell everyone to leave immediately until during the full credits to clean, as sometimes everyone need to stay to watch extra scene during the credits as they should check to aftercredits.com for movies that screened at it, and to see if it had after credits scene, and if yes, you can stay but wait until the full credits to clean as well. That is why I gave it four stars. Still, I do like to go to it a lot as always.

Yelp
I'm genuinely perplexed by all of the negative ratings for this movie theater. I've been here several times, and have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. The SuperLux at Chestnut Hill is located on Route 9, right by Hammond Pond. There's plenty of parking available and the neighborhood is nice, clean, and quiet. I always recommend going for the SuperLux seat as opposed to LuxLite. For a few more dollars, you get better views, reclining chairs, a call button, unlimited popcorn, and a $5 voucher for food/drinks. If you run out of soda during the movie, simply press a button and an usher will promptly arrive and take care of that for you. If it gets chilly, press a button and an usher will bring you a soft, freshly-laundered blanket. Seriously, how is this kind of service warranting one/two-star ratings here? SuperLux seating is about $30 but if you come in Monday-Thursday with a college ID, you get $5 off your movie ticket!

Janice A.

Yelp
I I had a great experience again today at the super lux theater. Hopefully they will bring back the full menu and open the bar early
google avatar

Stephanie Q.

Yelp
This is the most fancy movie theatre I'eve been to. I came here for a free event, so did not pay anything. The lobby looks a bit like a hotel with fancy chandeliers, you could mistake it for a hotel bar. However, the hotels were not as fancy as you would have expected, they were just ok. The seats are comfortable. I wonder if the blankets are clean or dirty. I have the same thought on airplanes too, and I think those blankets are usually dirty. Overall, it appears nice on the outside but gives off a pretentious vibe. The one positive is that this place is near Shake Shack!

N L.

Yelp
Pre-Covid, this was worth the experience. The menu was "fancier" than the standard Lux Level menu and your food/drinks were delivered with a smile. Things have changed. In its current state, no one should waste their hard-earned money. My wife and I took our five years old daughter to see Boss Baby 2. The next part is confusing. To get your food and drinks, you, either, have to download the Showcase OR order from the concession stand and they'll deliver it to your seat. Here's the kicker. I downloaded the App and tried to have my food delivered to my seat but the App told me I had to pick it up at the concession stand. Next issue: The menu is basic (Hamburger, hot dog, sausage and onions, chicken tenders and pizza). Gone are the club sandwich, steaks, etc. Also gone are the chefs who new how to cook the food. We ordered burger for our daughter, well-done with only bacon (no lettuce, tomato, onion or pickle). We received a burger cooked medium with everything on it and cold French fries We sent it back. A nice guy later walks out to tell me that the kitchen said they're out of bacon (even though bacon is on the menu). He was truly a great employee as he gave my daughter free milk and cookies while she waited for her plain burger. Her next burger arrived burnt to a crisp yet still red in the middle... with colder French fries. There is NO WAY this warranted a $60 entry fee before even buying food/drink. In my opinion, you'd do better to go to a regular movie, stand in line for popcorn and a soda and save the extra money because this was neither "Super" nor "Lux."

Sienna W.

Yelp
Went to go see the Mario movie. Loved the movie but more importantly the theater was amazing, it was my first time there and I would definitely go again! The seats were super comfortable and although I didn't order any food off the menu it all looked good. The popcorn was amazing and a medium was plenty big enough for me and my boyfriend. Will definitely be going again soon!

Peter B.

Yelp
My son and I attended a movie on April 9, 2023. I won't bore anyone with the details but we had EXCELLENT customer service from the young man at the ticket counter (whose name I regrettably did not get) and his manager, James T. Those two guys were incredibly kind and helpful and contributed to my son and I having an amazing experience. BTW, the seats in the theater were very comfortable and spacious. The room was clean. One of the best movie theaters I've ever attended.

Sanas S.

Yelp
staff was really rude and really unprofessional there was a tall girl in front that was rude and had no idea what she was doing
google avatar

Sara P.

Yelp
The food is just okay, but the seats are super comfortable and the staff is very friendly. Definitely get there early (20-30 min before showtime) so you can review the menu and order before the movie starts. We sat in Row F. The website was confusing re: understanding the layout and selecting seats, but once you've been here once and seen the inside, you know that it's a pretty small theatre/screen and all of the Superlux seats are great. The Lux Lite seats are fine too but I'd still avoid the first row.

Yelp
I've been to this theatre many times, and what people are saying about the service going downhill is sadly true. I used to say it was worth the experience - I don't think I can recommend it anymore. I elaborate why below, but it got a bit long winded, so only read if you're curious - the short version is I feel ignored and disrespected. My wife and I just got back from seeing Endgame, and even though we were seated before commercials, no one ever came to take our order like they usually do. We tried to wave someone down, but no luck, even though many staff members were just standing around - they seemed more interested in talking to each other than attending to patrons. We passed by 3 or 4 staffers on our way to our seats, and even waited a bit to see if any would seat us before giving up and seating ourselves. At one point about half an hour into the film, my wife spoke to a server delivering food to the people next to us and asked if we could order something - he said he'd come back to take our order. We didn't see him again. When about an hour in to the movie someone was going down the row asking people if they needed anything, and finally someone asked us "did you get everything you needed?" I said, "no, no one ever came to take our order even though we were seated before commercials started." Instead of any kind of reasonable response, like asking what we'd like or perhaps even going so far as an, "I'm sorry to hear that", what we got was, "well there is a button over there you can press" in what sounded an awful lot to my ears like an annoyed tone (in sharp juxtaposition to the polite "service voice" used to ask the initial question). The irony further being that, though I had been before and had just forgotten about the button, I didn't remember because no staff member ever reminded us (and if it had been out first time, we couldn't have known - it isn't written anywhere, they just tell you about it). At this point I was missing my movie and being condescended to by a staff member who it seems couldn't be bothered to do his job - not to just blame him though, we were ignored as a team effort by many staff members. At this point, I honestly just wanted to watch the movie and not deal with explaining how perverse that reaction was, so I asked him to leave us be. It wasn't a pleasant experience. A side note: I put this review on a different review site as well, but I feel more people should know what to expect at this theatre now, so I thought it would be helpful to put here too.

Yelp
This place may look enticing, but trust me, you're far better off going to a normal theater. There are so many aspects to this business that aggravate me, but to name a few: 1.) The value is just horrendous. I spent $22 dollars for the LuxLite, and from what I saw, you're paying more than double for the same experience you'd get at a normal theater. This price is almost comical. I have a luxury theater in my hometown that's nicer than this, and they charge $12 and under. 2.) The staff was very alienating and had very unsettling vibes to them. 3.) The seats didn't even have foot rests! I kept trying to make them pop up by pulling the lever, but I could only make my back recline a few inches. So, in reality, it's exactly the same as a regular theater! The only reason I'm not giving this place a 1 star is because their food, from what we tried, was incredible. The CALAMARI was seriously some of the best I've had in a while. There were fried jalapeños in the mix that added an intense but refreshing kick. The seasoning they used on the batter was just out-of-this-world. To be honest, I might actually come back just for their calamari. Overall, unless you really want some good calamari, you're paying twice as much money for what is pretty much the same experience you'd get at a normal theater. Horrible business model.

Yelp
My Superlux chair was broken in Theater 2. The app that you are required to use does not work. Lastly, the popcorn here is horrible.

Yelp
I was excited to come here so I could see DWD and use my free movie pass from my rewards. The pass clearly stated that the QR code could be scanned from a mobile device OR printed out. I brought it on my phone since I didn't have access to a printer. When I went up to the counter to redeem my rewards and get my ticket the staff was extremely unhelpful. They said my ticket could only be printed and not used on a phone and were insistent on that even though it said print or mobile device. But yet, they have no where I could have printed the ticket out. They didn't even say sorry or offer any help whatsoever and were just looking at me. So, I walked out. Sad to say I won't be coming back here because it seems nice.

Yelp
Great experience - it's was a Las Vegas worthy experience. Tickets are pricey but worth it. SuperLux $28 includes $5 food discount, free popcorn and soda/refills, personal blanket to keep the chill off. Order your Davios food and drinks on an iPad and get personal attention from waitstaff. A must do at least once
