"Next year, North Carolina-based seafood chain Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar plans to open its first Illinois location, bringing oysters, lobster rolls, and low country boils to suburban Geneva, about 35 miles west of Chicago. Originally founded in 2007 in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, Shuckin’ Shack began franchising in 2014. It has since expanded into 16 locations across its home state, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, and Florida, according to reps. The restaurant would be the second in Illinois — LondonHouse Chicago being the other — to be part of the James Beard Foundation’s Smart Catch Program, a list of restaurants committed to sustainably sourced shrimp, oysters, and more. Locally, the Shedd Aquarium has organized a similar effort. The restaurant is known for a menu of oyster shooters, plus chicken wing surf-and-turf plates, family-style steam pots, and sides like hushpuppies." - Naomi Waxman

"With locations in Georgia, Maryland, and the Carolinas, this chain offers a seafood-heavy menu with samplers, sandwiches, salads, platters (like a Lowcountry boil), and more. Fun fact: The original Shuckin’ Shack opened 11 years ago in Carolina Beach." - Katie Toussaint

Google
Great experience, great food just GREAT! Had the best seafood lunch ever! If you haven't been here yet I totally recommend y'all do!

Google
Small but had some awesome food! We were there on a Tuesday and the wings were $1.50 each. The crab dip was absolutely amazing ! Drinks, we opted for the painkillers. They were fruity and delicious. We even got a free sticker after we paid.

Stopped here for lunch during our family vacation in May 2024. It's a pretty small dining room so we decided to sit outside. I ordered the lobster roll and it was SO GOOD! There were large chunks of lobster meat and the dressing was evenly mixed - perfect lobster to bread ratio. Our server was attentive and friendly. My dad, husband and I also tried the oyster shooters which were a little spicier than I'm used to but overall very tasty. I'll definitely come back whenever I'm in Kure/Carolina Beach.

Google
We had been to the Wilmington location before, but this was our first trip to the Carolina Beach one. It's a bit small, but the vibes are top tier. We went on Monday to get the $1.50 oysters. They were great and they know how to serve them. Our child had the Low Country Boil and shared her shrimp. Those are the best shrimp I've had in Carolina Beach. The parking situation leaves something to be desired, but that's the way most places in that immediate area are.

Google
Give this Place their 5 stars Google because they Deserve it! The Whole Experience was a Blast❤️... Lived in the area and would frequent this place.. since moving to Colorado I miss this place and make my way here Everytime I come back! Love this Place❤️❤️❤️

Google
Super cool little dive bar with great oysters and a dedicated portion of their drink menu to oyster shooters. If this is your kinda bar, I highly recommend stopping in.

Google
To start .... our phenomenal waitress, Jessica. The service was great!! Jessica's recommendations were spot on. Food: mildly disappointed. Servings were small for the price. Fries, slaw and fried cauliflower were the tops. Lobster roll was good, but nothing to write home about. Crab (snow crab) dinner was disappointing with the corn 🌽 as the highlight. Oysters ... the James River oysters were fresh, but bland, the Caroline Beach Salties are the way to go with a nice bring taste ... decent cocktail sauce, but no crackers. Oh, did we mention the service (Jessica) was superb. We'll stop by here again in the Fall to try again.

Google
Solid 4 out of 5 stars. We enjoyed the lobster roll which was $20.99 and it was worth the money. Friendly staff, and definitely a locals place for sure. Had to pay for parking but overall quite happy with my decision to eat here. On a funny note, there is a sign that says “friends don’t let friends eat imported seafood” and on the chalkboard it said the crab was from Canada. (See pics) haha! Would return

Yelp
Very good. Our bartender was super nice friendly all while being busy. Steamed oysters were on point. Got steamed shrimp, crab legs and corn. All great. Definitely a neat place.

Kenneth U.

Yelp
Service was good. Food left a lot to be desired. The oysters were dirty! Shells not cleaned and large pieces of shell in the oyster. Seemed like the person Shuckin didn't really know what he was doing. Saw a large cockroach on the floor and decided to close out and go somewhere else. We've been to the DT location multiple times but we will never come back to this one.

Yelp
Great place in Carolina Beach although it may be underwater this week due to flooding from a storm. I was there last week and had a nice dinner. The staff were attentive and the drinks were tasty. The oysters were fresh and the lobster roll delicious. It's small inside and I sat at the bar. There is seating outside. It's noisy but has that authentic Carolina beach bar vibe with really good food.

Ben P.

Yelp
Staff is Awesome along with the location. CB is a foodie destination as long as you know where to go and what to order.

Kaitlyn C.

Yelp
Decent deal for a pound of crab for $30 on Thursdays. Wasn't too crowded around lunchtime, but very limited seating inside. The crab wasn't as fresh as expected but the hush puppies were piping hot and had a perfectly golden crust. I would get the fish and chips next time- seemed like a crowded favorite

Yelp
Best meal I had in Carolina Beach. Crab legs and oysters were soo good. Great little spot and good service! Will be back again when I'm in town.

Yelp
This is a cute beach dive but the food and drinks are amazing good quality food and staff are friendly and fast. Small location so get ready for a wait.

Paige W.

Yelp
Cute, small with a dive bar feel. Service was great. 4-5 tables outside if you preferred to be outside.

Sinibaldo R.

Yelp
You have to make this stop if you are visiting Wilmington! Trust me :) I was visiting NC for a holiday and wanted to have oysters. This place blew us away! The venue The place is huge inside. Everything was decorated with a sea theme and super clean! They had a life band that was SO GOOD! The service The staff was kind and serviceable. Our server, in particular, was lovely. She was also super helpful in sharing the day's deals and helping us order the oysters. Our food was served in ~ 10 minutes. Food and drinks Their Happy Hour is super affordable! We had rounds of various types of oysters. They were so fresh and tasty! Their drinks were also super cheap :) I cannot recommend this place enough!

Heather V.

Yelp
Absolutely not! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service. I was ignored and made to feel like a total bother. It makes me cringe to think how things are when summer actually hits. And the oysters are gross. Go somewhere else!!

Tim S.

Yelp
Updating my 2013 review. I normally go to the Shuckin Shack in downtown Wilmington, primarily due to proximity. This one (original location I believe), is much smaller and has a smaller food menu. The place looks great and is a great place to grab a drink. It is small, popular, and can be hard to get in if you show up during high peak times. This location is a great dive bar with okay food. There are some items that are better than okay, like the oysters, fried pickles and shrimp. The fish and chips came out below par. Small fish filet and it just wasn't very tasty. Service at the bar was controlled chaos. Everyone was very busy but provided very good service to everyone.

Nina Q.

Yelp
**NOT all you can eat oysters on busy summer nights** Other than that, this is a pretty solid spot! Really fun bar atmosphere that is still appropriate for families, plus delicious food and nice staff. Not a nice, dress up seafood restaurant if that's what you're looking for. This is a casual, good bar seafood joint. Just come with that expectation.

Taylor L.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, everything was amazing. The vibe was also super cool and the service was great! No complaints here, my belly is happy!

Stacy L.

Yelp
In the area for work and decided to stay in Carolina Beach. Location is great and easy to get to from the main road. Parking was easy to find (this time of year). Stepped in and sat at a side table, immediately welcomed by the two bartenders working that evening. The service was outstanding the entire time, I don't think my drink was ever fully empty before another was brought to the table. I love to grab oysters when I'm this close to the ocean, so that was my #1 choice. They came out with a mignonette that was different that I've ever had, it had a little kick almost like a pico de gallo for oysters. It was a great addition. I also ordered the cod fish and chips and the fish was great, nice and flaky, good portion size and the fries were seasoned well and crispy. The slaw was a normal side, tasted great. I tried the house sauce that came with it, and it was great with the fries. Love the vibe here, friendly, welcoming space. If I was a local, this would be my spot! I wanted to go back tonight for the old bay shrimp, but they are celebrating their staff with a well deserved holiday party. Next time!

Nikhir K.

Yelp
Ok crab dip and fish and chips - boardwalk kinda food!! Service was good. Not one for the record books.

Y Yelp Y.

Yelp
***FOOD: Fun place with good food. Seafood boil- excellent with lots of shrimp & sausage; Mac n Cheese bites- very good; raw oysters - half price before 7pm week days -so fresh & juicy delish; chicken tenders- great; mini hot dogs-good Everything was delicious ***COST (OUT OF 4$) $$ ***DÉCOR: fun divey place. small place with seats around a bar and maybe 5 tables. Christmas lights up, baseball caps stapled to the rafters, fake shark & surfboard. Red lights give off a red tinge on everything. ***SERVICE: the only server there was friendly and nice. She didn't come back to refill our water though but she looked real busy. ***RECOMMEND: YES RECOMMEND

Yelp
Happy hour oysters were not it. Even though they were a 1.50, I would've paid market price to have the quality shown in the other pictures. Not only were they tiny, but poorly shucked with many shell pieces. It was mushy too, not plump or even whole* I'd say. Felt like we were given poor quality oysters and they came out quick -- too quick... Other places will have names, location, and a description on taste. I guess they only had one type here? It's a small place, a bar with a few tables. Service was ok. For an "oyster bar", extremely disappointing. Stick to the fried food I guess.

Bailey L.

Yelp
Highly recommend! It is small and you will probably have to wait even to sit at the bar but it's worth it! The seafood was so good from oysters to crab dip to lobster roll. Its a cool vibe and bartenders were great

Nino R.

Yelp
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Seafood abounds when you're in a beach town. After spending most of the day walking around the town, my gf and I ended our night here. Saul T Pot is the way to go. You get it all. Coleslaw is ok. Shrimp Cocktail is good. You won't be disappointed. Cappy's Roast is a good option for the budget conscious. Seat on the sidewalk is nice. You get to people watch. It's a good time. Try it at least once...

Rick D.

Yelp
Dena was a decent server and does the best as she can to get you in, food, drinks and out. this is a high volume place eat and get out kind of feel, good or bad? No, Just the way it is. This maybe not the best go to place if you are not a tourist staying in the area, parking is sparse, but food is good, drinks are okay ( From what we got, too sweet, too watery, too much garnish) We had the Boil and it was very good. Check it out if your visiting Carolina Beach but if you live nearby wait till off season.

Chad L.

Yelp
Sot at the bar for 20 minutes and not one server or bartender came by to serve us. If you want service go somewhere else at Carolina beach. This palace is slow as molasses

Vicki B.

Yelp
The staff was very nice. The food was good, not great. The mahi taco was ok, but couldn't even taste the fish. A little disappointing as we really liked Shucking Shack in Surf City.

Jesse B.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing, the service was fast and very friendly. The ambiance is very unique and has a classic beach feel! Highly recommended!

Brent B.

Yelp
Great service. Good food. Decent beer list. A little pricy but overall would come again.

Laura G.

Yelp
Delicious food in a fun restaurant with great service. We got the cappys roast and added the crab dip. The crab dip was great, flavorful and generous. The oysters were huge and fresh as were the shrimp. The coleslaw and corn were good. The chocolate cake was amazing, more like a candy with frosting. All in all this was the best meal and I would probably get the same exact items next time we went.

Mary R.

Yelp
Nice and fresh oysters. Love a dive bar that serves amazing oysters!! And the wings were phenomenal!

Lynn P.

Yelp
Nice laid back place on a weeknight off season. Service was prompt and prices are reasonable. Oysters were cooked as requested, not overdone or underdone. Typical bar food otherwise. We will be back.

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Busy, busy, busy! The wait was almost 40 minutes for a table but end up sitting in the back near bar. Only ordered a beer and oysters. The restaurant is small but hospitable. First time I have ever had oysters! I had the steamed oysters and I will admit it must be an acquired taste. It's really the texture for me, but not the cooks fault! I "might" try again but if not I'm glad I got to experience this staple of Carolina Beach!

Timothy R.

Yelp
Awesome staff. what an amazing place. The food is top notch. Spent a week in Carolina beach and eat here 4 different nights. Loved the food.

Lance K.

Yelp
Nice spot right in the main strip a block away from the beach. The staff is awesome and makes sure you're well taken care of.

Amy B.

Yelp
We tried this little restaurant and highly recommend it to anyone in the Carolina Beach area! The staff was amazing, atmosphere was incredibly friendly, and the food was "out of this world" awesome!

Andrew C.

Yelp
We stopped by after a day on the beach for lunch. The wait staff was and checked in all meal long. The food was alright. My son and I got the fish and chips, I assumed it would be fresh but all 4 pieces between our two plates were shaped exactly the same so I assume it was not. My wife got the $21 lobster sandwhich and enjoyed it. Fried pickles were $8 for 5 spears, not worth it.

Tracy J.

Yelp
great food and service - Dive into a world of simple, good seafood and cold beer at this rustic oyster joint! Whether you're craving some fresh oysters ,shrimp sausage and corn-SS has you covered. This is the place to relax and unwind and where the focus is on letting the flavors of the sea shine through. #SeafoodLovers #ColdBeer #RusticEats #OysterJoint

Chris C.

Yelp
Great staff and steams oysters are great. We went yesterday and they were $2 a pop. Not bad for what you get

Hunter M.

Yelp
I got off work at 9pm and was looking for places still open that late on a Monday. Decided on Shuckin Shack. The bar itself is super cool. Feels like a hole in the wall, and the bartenders were nice. I decided to get the Greggah lobster roll. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because it was pretty small for the price coming in at $20. But the taste was AMAZING. The fries were perfectly crisp with soft center and the quality of the lobster was A+. They give you some Dijon mustard for the fries and it's super good. Props to the chef.

Donna K.

Yelp
Had the best rating in Carolina Beach so we thought we would try it out. Small hole in the wall, 6 tables and a bar. Peel and eat shrimp were good, the Greggah (lobster roll) was tiny with mashed pieces not chunks and the coleslaw was full of black pepper to the point that was all you tasted Not sure how this is the best in the area. I won't be back. Seems more like a place only a local can love. The service was good, food came out extremely fast.

Alexandra P.

Yelp
Fun little seafood joint in Carolina Beach. The ambiance gives hole in the wall vibes, but it was quite busy when we went on a Friday for lunch. Our server was able to seat us right away though. Food was good, but I was a bit disappointed in the Greggah, it was very small for $21. The Surf & Turf was delicious tho!! Fun spot to check out when visiting for the weekend. Our food came out pretty quick and our server was very prompt!

Danette E.

Yelp
Great service, both servers were friendly and very helpful. Had the fried wings, fries hush puppies, oysters and a hurricane to drink. Drink was very good and hush puppies very tasty. Cozy small atmosphere and nice outdoor seating.

Diane R.

Yelp
Absolutely a must go! Best food, best! We were looking for a seafood boil but found this treasure. Everything steamed. Amazing!! Go early.

Jessica R.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that I was slightly disappointed with this place. Service wasn't the greatest. They were slammed but we sat at the bar for 10 plus minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. We wanted to have more than one drink but with the way service was going, we just tried to get in and get out...They were out of mahi, which was disappointing, and the oysters weren't super meaty. The mix of horseradish and sherry was a great combo to serve the oysters with though! The ahi tuna was really really fresh tasting and the best part of our meal!

Alexander B.

Yelp
This restaurant had pretty high ratings and we decided to give it a try for dinner. We got seated in no time and everyone was friendly. The menu has a lot of seafood to choose from and many cocktails (including oyster shots). We ordered lobster rolls and got them in just a few mins. The sides were amazing but lobster rolls had too much salt in them. Overall, it's a solid 4* place and we'd come back!

Julie S.

Yelp
Great friendly service. My son and I got steamed crab legs, mussels, and shrimp. So tasty and perfectly cooked. And pearl's punch is the bomb! Just a little local joint with good food and good people.

Lori D.

Yelp
Oyster Bar? They had one oyster on the menu and they were the smallest oysters I've ever seen. We waited 40 minutes to get a table, had an oyster shooter, a dozen raw oysters, a beer, then left. We just didn't get a good vibe here even though we wish we could've. We had read all the great reviews. When the waitress realized we weren't ordering dinner, she never came back to our table. A different waitress asked if we wanted anything else to drink, then the bartender brought us our check. No issue with that- teamwork is good. It's a very small place. I honestly don't understand the hype though - but to be fair, we didn't order food and that's what people seem to rave about.

Cindy S.

Yelp
We were in town for a family vacation, good place, good food! Only downfall was how little room there was for seating !

Jeff B.

Yelp
Cool spot next the Marriott at CB. Good food and drink specials. Bartenders were very attentive. Wings and seafood were good. Overall good experience.

Kevin S.

Yelp
The service was on point! Every employee was attentive and friendly. Best service! The steamed pots and oysters were so good! Drinks kept coming. And the best part was we sat outside and it started to rain. The staff found us a table inside and helped us move and we didn't even ask to move! Great service

Colleen W.

Yelp
Steamed shrimp was good, drinks are powerful but fried stuff is just ok. Oysters are fine but a little pricey as they are a la cart.

Ashley B.

Yelp
Okay, I have a confession. My fiancé and I ate at this place twice while on vacation. THAT is how delicious this place is! Back in Charlotte, there are restaurants that do lobster rolls, but NOTHING like this place! The bread was like a buttered piece of Texas toast, and the lobster was deliciously seasoned and buttered too (you can taste it). I had high expectations for any restaurant in CB that served lobster rolls, but idgaf anymore bc I have found the ONE. And if the lobster roll isn't enough, the crab dip will surprise you!! So creamy and delicious and goes so well with the bread! Honestly this was my favorite dish here bc of the flavors, I came back the second time for the crab dip ONLY. Ugh, so good! And finally, the shrimp cocktail. Honestly, nothing to rave about. The only downside of our meals from here. They only give you 6 shrimp, when the menu makes it seem like a whole platter to share. 9/10 BEST seafood in Carolina Beach!!! (Didn't give the last point bc of the shrimp cocktail lol)
