My mom was visiting and craving oysters. After taking her downtown, we were told her favorite oyster spot was no longer serving them, so I figured I'd take her here since it was closer to the house anyway! I had never been here before, but we decided to give it a try and I'm glad we did!
We went on a Friday afternoon, around 4 pm. There were only about 2 other booths occupied. By the time we left, more people had arrived and the after-work crowd began trickling in at the bar. We sat in the booth section (you can seat yourself,) but the bar looked really fun with lots of cool lights, I may have to try that section on my next visit.
We ordered the Crab Royale oysters and the 1/2 lb. Peel and Eat Shrimp. On Fridays, between 11 am-11 pm, they have 1/2 lb. Peel and Eat Shrimp, 1 lb. Mussels, Crab Dip, and Crawfish for $10 ea.
They have other daily specials, again from 11 am-11 pm. I'll include a photo with those deals along with the entire menu just in case you're interested. I will say, my mother is the only reason I even entertained this restaurant because my husband doesn't eat seafood, but I was happy to see they offered other options on the menu, such as wings/tenders, burgers, and sandwiches. So now I won't feel guilty dragging him to Shucks because I know he'll be able to eat something, too!
The Crab Royale is a half-dozen grilled oysters with garlic butter and Parmesan cheese, topped with crab. They were served warm with lemon and were delicious and fresh tasting- and to my surprise no grittiness! We ordered the shrimp hot (you can choose to have it hot or cold) and it was served with lemon and a generous bowl of melted butter. All of the seasoning was on the shell though, so we just peeled the shells off and rubbed it in the seasoning on the plate. For those who are picky about deveining their shrimp and wondering if they come butterflied, no, they don't.
Our total was $29.25 for those two items ($16.99 oysters, $10 shrimp). I would have given them 5-stars but no one came to refill our waters the entire time and that's one of my pet peeves. :-/ But the servers were friendly and the atmosphere was fun, their prices are competitive, and and I really enjoyed the food! I'd definitely recommend Shucks!
