How to Spend 24 Food-Filled Hours in San Jose’s Japantown | Eater SF

"No stroll through J-Town is complete without stopping at Shuei-do Manju Shop, started in 1952 and one of the last manju shops left in California. They specialize in manju and mochi, selling 700 to 2,000 soft, chewy confections every day; current owners Tom and Judy Kumamaru still make everything by hand and offer a large selection of regular and seasonal flavors as well as filled varieties using azuki (red) or lima (white) bean paste—note their very specific hours." - Elaine Wu

Mochi Shops in the U.S. Continue the Japanese Wagashi Tradition - Eater

"Elsewhere in the American West, a younger but still long-established generation of confectionary stores are quietly operating: Shuei-Do Manju Shop in San Jose is nearly 70." - Amber Murakami-Fester

Since Benkyodo closed a while ago, I'd always wanted to find a local spot with high-quality manju and Shuei-Do does it well! I like the variety in their selection and popular items sell out quickly by the afternoon. Some of my favorites are yomogi, habutai, green tea, kinako, and their butter mochi. They take pre-orders online if you'd like to guarantee your picks, and also in-person orders. Recommend everyone to give this place a try!

Google
It’s recommended to check their Instagram for updates, but even then they won’t tell you what’s out of stock each day. I feel that some of their items run out fast even in the morning, so I don’t get a chance to try the good stuff like the Chi Chi Dango. I couldn’t taste the mugwort in the Yomogi or the Matcha in the Green Tea items. The Butter Mochi and the Peanut Butter items were very good!

Old fashioned manju and mochi shop run by generations. Amazing! Not only the taste but the culture, tradition and blend of Japanese and American make every bite meaningful

Google
I pre-ordered items from Shuei-Do Manju via email. It was easy and there is a separate window to pick up pre-ordered items so you can avoid the line. I got a box of 8 items and the total was $20. By the time we got there around noon on a Saturday, there was a short line but they were sold out of all of the chichi dango and butter mochi. I am not Japanese so I'm not an expert, but I will try to do my best to describe the items we got! Peanut butter - this was my favorite item from the shop. It's mochi that is filled with peanut butter (and maybe lima bean according to the website) and coated in kinako. The mochi was so tender and chewy and it had just the right amount of peanut butter in it. Mango & strawberry chichi dango - again, the mochi itself had a wonderful texture. The flavors were quite subtle and kind of reminded me of hi-chew candies. White manju - this was like a steamed bun filled with azuki (red bean paste). The bun itself is quite thin (so not like dim sum style buns). I haven't had manju before so I enjoyed trying it. Kinako - another mochi item with great texture. I think it has a filling but I didn't notice much taste wise and it was coated in kinako powder. Brown inaka - this is similar to the white manju except the red beans were whole and it's made with brown sugar. Again, fun to try. Overall, I really enjoyed everything we got but if I were to return, I would get the peanut butter mochi. I also want to try the butter mochi and monaka on my next visit!

Google
I traveled all the way from Alaska for this mochi and it was 100% worth my time. Sweetest employees and the butter mochi is perfectly buttery, not overly sweet and has a nice semi-soft flaky topping. The strawberry dango is lightly flavored. The portions are amazing. I spent $30 for a box of 12 pieces.

Google
Shuei-Do has always been one of my go tos for homemade mochi in the Bay Area and even more so now that Benkyodo closed down. Highly recommend the butter mochi, white bean mochis, Monaka, and if you’re curious to try other ones, kinako. They do run out on the weekends and towards the end of the day. While mochi is vegan/ gluten free, they sometimes use non gluten free and dairy ingredients.

Tim

Google
Pretty solid mochis. Got a box of 4 (yomogi, green tea, peanut butter, butter mochi) for $10. Can mix and match flavors however you like. Mochis were a nice texture, the ones with red bean paste were really sweet though. I think the best ones are the butter and peanut butter, but overall their not on Japan level. Maybe the best we got here. They take contactless payments and are very efficient. It is just an order window and as soon as you pay they will hand you your order. Street parking but free residential street parking a block or 2 north

Krystine L

Google
Delicious fresh mochi! It's a small place with a walk up window for ordering which was unexpected, but the prices are reasonable and the quality is very good. I prefer traditional mochi (habutai), but the green tea was really good too. My friend wanted the peanut butter and brown inaka, but I think the habutai is definitely better imo.

Yelp
Located in San Jose Japantown, parking is plentiful but availability is limited. There's only street parking and is metered. Their assortment of manju and mochi was so delicious. I especially loved the chi chi dango. It was so chewy and the flavor was just perfect. Tap to pay is accepted. Overall, Sheui-Do Manju is a great place.

Yelp
I was really excited to try out this specialty mochi shop, but I must say I was disappointed by my visit. Ordered a box of 10, with two each of the raspberry and peach chi chi dango, butter mochi, yomogi, and white inaka. Not a huge fan of the chi chi dango--fruity flavor tastes somewhat artificial. Butter mochi was a crowd favorite. Worth trying but wouldn't come again. I feel like you can get mochi on the same level at many Asian grocery stores.

Yelp
I LOVE MOCHI!! There aren't nearly enough mochi shops in the Bay Area, but at least I know I can depend on Shuei-Do to satisfy my mochi cravings! While the line may be long, the ordering system is quick and efficient. Definitely come in the morning when they first open or place a pre-order. I came around 2:30 PM on a Saturday and unfortunately, they were out of a couple varieties that I wanted to try, including the chi chi dango, peanut butter, and pink white. Luckily, I've had their chi chi dango before from both Kissako Tea in SF and Takahashi Market in San Mateo so it didn't feel like too much of a loss. I tried the habutai and the green tea mochis (4 for $10). The mochi was fresh, pillowy, and had just the right amount of sweetness. Perfect ratio of bean paste to mochi. The red bean paste in both mochis was also incredibly smooth. I will say though that I couldn't taste much of the green tea flavor from the green tea mochi, but it was still delicious. I'll for sure be coming back to try the rest of their mochi offerings!

Yelp
I came on a weekday during Christmas week a few minutes before opening and there was already a line. I've heard great things so I decided to really jump in and order mochi for myself and all of my family for Christmas. Sounds like a risk to buy so much when I've never tried the before, but based on these reviews I would say that I'm making a good educated decision :) The staff was nice enough to accommodate me even though I was a newbie who didn't know to pre-order if I needed that many boxes. There was a line for pre-order pickups, and a line for ordering. They prepared my many boxes very quickly and the whole process took about 15-20 minutes from when I first stood in line. The mochi is very soft and fresh, and my favorite is the chi chi dango. The flavors of the day were strawberry and melona, and they were delicious! I can't wait to share these treats this Christmas!
google avatar

Mykah Denise L.

Yelp
The melona chi chi dango was so soft and tasty! I ended up buying more lol. I found the melona flavor to be very subtle and not too sweet :) I miss the chi chi dango from Hawaii so this place is nice to stop by for the mochi cravings in San Jose. I preordered through their email and paid the day of for pick up. It was about $2.50/ piece or $10 for the 4 piece box. There is a $5 minimum to place an order with card, so bring cash if you need to! I definitely recommend trying out their rotating flavors of the week which you can find ahead of time on their Instagram.

Yelp
There isn't enough mochi shops anywhere and I think SJ itself is even more limited. I'm a mochi-lover so I was delighted when I saw that this shop exists! We got brown inane, peanut butter, rasberry chi chi dango, and butter mochi. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing. Would definitely bring more friends and family here!

Yelp
The Manju here is authentic! I've made it before using mochiko flour and I can say first hand that you taste the difference between that and fresh Manju. I've had this place on my list from before I moved over the summer. The shop is open from Thursday - Sunday so I'm happy we caught it at a good time. The staff were patient when we told them it was our first time and even gave us good recommendations. For reference, everything on the top row is recommended. We ordered 5 pieces: The Butter Mochi, Yomogi, Pink Tsubu, Pink White, and Green Tea. The Butter Mochi was the best one and it kind of reminds me of butter cake. It even looks like it too. My second favorite was the Yomogi. It had good flavor and mended with the red bean paste well. Some of the other flavors that I wanted to try were sold out so I'll have to come a bit earlier next weekend. Overall great place if you're looking for mochi. I can see why they are rated so highly.

Yelp
These were rudely delicious, I'm a little offended by how yummy they were :\ I wanted to stop by here to grab a gift for my future father-in-law who really likes these types of desserts, and then also got a butter mochi and chi chi (the flavor of the day was Raspberry & POG, and I love POG, so I had to) for my fiancé and I to share. Both were really tasty!! The top of the butter mochi tasted a bit like pineapple bun which is one of my favorite things, so it was great! The mochi part was also quite moist, and much denser than the chi chi pastry, which was just pure soft squishy light mochi. Honestly unbelievable how soft and light it was?! I saw on the menu that they actually have quite a lot of different wrappings, including the standard rice flour wrapping, but also cake flour, wafer (the large one on the right), and more. Given that they were able to master two completely different types of mochi, I definitely want to come back to try some of the manju with the other wrappings and flavors!

Yelp
Shuei-Do Manju Shop is a San Jose Japantown treasure. Everybody who's born and raised here all know about the Bay's one and only manju shop. Craving mochi dessert? Look no farther than Shuei-do. Everything is handmade and the shop is storefront order only. You can order ahead of time by calling or via their Facebook. Don't let that deter you from visiting or ordering that way, yes it might not be as "modern" as the other shops but that's the magic of it. Their specials are on their facebook so you can see ahead of time what is featured. Service is kind and quick, you order at the window then pickup in a few mins after they pack it for you. I've been here over the last 5 years, and every time slaps. I love to bring a box for friends or for people visiting out of town. The chewiness and QQ quality never disappoints. My fave flavors are always the strawberry chi chi dango's. I love having just straight rice flour goodness without any fillings sometimes. Their peanut is pretty good. And their kinako is a classic. The passion fruit doesn't have much flavor personally, so I'd skip that. Bring cash, and enjoy the rest of your day in Japantown. There's so many things to see and eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Great mochi! We went on a Saturday around lunch. There were ~5 parties ahead of us but the line went pretty quickly. They have different box options for how many mochi you'd like to order. They also have weekly specials for different flavored chichidango. I was also excited about the butter mochi but a bit dense and not my favorite. You can tell everything is fresh and overall pretty solid - best I found in the Bay Area.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
I've never had Manju before, I've had mochi and was curious on what these were like. The girl at the window was very nice and helpful. I decided to try the peanut butter one and the fruit one that didn't have the bean paste. The peanut butter one was sooo soft, the texture was amazing. It was like eating the softest pillow you could. The peanut butter flavor was good too, a very decadent treat. The fruit one was really good too, not too sweet but also very soft and chewy. I definitely like mochi with the ice cream center but these were a fun treat as well.
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Not much to say other than it's a walk up window counter where they sell delicious mochis. Soft and sweet. No seating. Come early before they run out.
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
Right now the shop is just a walk up window and if you go at lunch time there is likely a line. They have very good traditional mochi and manju. The texture is so soft and chewy. I didn't need to order ahead of time and they weren't out of any flavors during the lunch hour. I asked for 2 sets of the most popular flavors. My husband who makes mochi with his family for Japanese Shogatsu loved it and so did our daughter; even after 8 hours of travel time. We even had some up to 3 days after and the texture held up. I will make it an effort to go back here every time I visit SJC.

C P.

Yelp
Great taste and quality. We try to come here every time we are in the area. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Eva C.

Yelp
I love this place and their mochi!! I've been coming here for years now. It's definitely getting pricier each year, but the quality is still as good as it was before! The parking situation is annoying as it is in downtown sj and need to pay for street parking, but if you go on a Sunday, then parking is free. I would recommend going early if you want a better selection of flavors as they do tend to run out in the afternoon. I got the green tea, kinako (soy bean powder), pink white (lima bean), peanut butter, and two raspberry chichi dangos this time. My favorite is their butter mochi, but they are only available fri-sun. Their fruit chichi dangos are great too if you prefer fruit flavored mochi with beans! They announce the daily flavors on instagram each week.
google avatar

Rona S.

Yelp
After Benkyodo closed years ago, this was the only place (imo) to get the best mochi & manju in the bay area. I have been going here for many years now. More than Benkyodo because of the proximity. This is a small shop in Japan Town San Jose, I have only seen it as a order to pick-up place. They have a variety of flavors, and some flavors rotate. I always get kinako, yomogi, monaka, chichi dango, white manju, and then rotate on the other flavors. The texture is always so great, freshly made everyday, and also not too sweet. These are better eaten the same day, I don't think I have ever had them last longer than that. Lol The staff is always very kind and service is always quick. Make sure to go early morning because they do run out of the more popular flavors later in the day. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Fely L.

Yelp
Pricey but damn good! Mochi is so soft!!!! You'll just have to try it yourself. You can't go wrong with any of their flavors. Super fresh!
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
My husband finally treated me to the freshest mochi in San Jose's Japantown--and it was well worth the 40-minute drive.
google avatar

Lindsey A.

Yelp
Excellent small manju and mochi shop. I liked the raspberry mochi. Order outside at the window. Street parking is available (bring coins).

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place while walking around Japantown in SJ and decided to try some mochi as I haven't had butter mochi in a while. I'm not sure which flavors we picked as they were running out and there were only a few options left. We waited in line for about 5 minutes and got our mochi immediately after we ordered. The top two mochi in the picture (the cream disc and the white red bean mochi in the top right corner) weren't very tasty. They were very dry and bland and we threw them away as they were unappetizing. The bottom two mochi (butter mochi square and the pink red bean mochi) tasted better than the other two but I was still disappointed as they just tasted average. I love butter mochi but this didn't do anything for me as there was nothing special about it. The pink mochi was also just okay as it was chewy and tasted fresh but the red bean flavor didn't really pop. I don't think I'd come back here again as the food was just okay but I'm glad I tried it as it did satisfy my butter mochi craving.

Yelp
A must must must whenever I am in J-town on the right day. So many childhood happy memories of these soft little treats of deliciousness! I ordered 16 altogether, I believe for $40. Tip for travel (I often take them on travel to friends and fam: They do well if you individually wrap them before placing in the freezer (in a freezer bag). Ensure they thaw on the counter for a few hours and they are just as bouncy and wonderful. (Bonus: If you want to cut them, halfway through the thawing process is a perfect time to get a clean cut.)
google avatar

Tsu-Li L.

Yelp
Great place for manju! There's always a long line when it's open, but you can also pre-order and they announce their upcoming flavors for chichidango on their Instagram. There's only street parking in Japantown, but there's usually some parking available unless there's an event. When we went on 3/1, they were offering sakura mochi after 12pm. There was a line that went past the next store, but it went by pretty quickly, about 15 min. Above the store window, there's a sign of what's available at the time and there will be a sold out sticker if they run out, and they do run often out before closing, especially the more popular manju. The manju is very soft and pillowy when fresh. The chichi dango has a strong fruit flavor, but is also very soft. My favorite is the kinako, which always has an excess of kinako powder. The sakura mochi had marinated perilla leaf wrapping some sticky rice with sweet bean paste inside. During Obon and Nikkei Matsuri, they sell shaved ice, which always has a long line. Would highly recommend if you love sweets or are in need of a gift!
google avatar

Vivian P.

Yelp
Since the store is in Japantown, we had to drive around to find street parking and walk to the store. We ordered at the counter and it was immediately ready so we didn't have to wait! You can order by the tray or individually by the piece. I got the Butter Mochi and this was so delicious. It was soft and sweet, but not too overly sweet which I enjoyed! I would come back solely just for their Butter Mochi!!!
google avatar

Neha N.

Yelp
Living near this place is a treat. A japantown favorite that best exemplifies the community here! People line up for this mochi and manju every Thursday to Sunday. I definitely recommend getting there earlier than later because they sell out quickly. They rotate chi chi dango flavors every week and butter mochi is only available on weekends! The butter mochi is the most popular I'd say, and it's delicious. These treats are all pillowy soft and the perfect sweetness. Don't miss out!
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
I absolutely love everything I have had from here! My Recommendations: My favorite is the Butter Mochi: DELICIOUS. This one is the one I crave the most. So smooth, buttery, and perfectly bouncy. Pink Tsubu: Light and smooth. I order this one often. Green Tea: Stronger flavor and worth trying! TIP: Be adventurous and try different flavors each time you go so you can figure out what you like! Service: Staff is quick and once you order, you usually do not have to wait long for your order. Ambiance: This is modeled as a store front so there is no seating. You'll order at the window and wait for your order. Parking: Parking can be tricky here during peak times. All of the spots nearby are metered parking Overall: Honestly this is the best mochi I've had in the Bay. I dream about it (seriously).

Amie N.

Yelp
i was very disappointed when i came two weeks ago (sunday 1pm). 2/4 of my mochis were hard, stale like they've been sitting out, even a day old. FOOD: thankfully today for the japantown obon festival, they were better. i didn't taste much from the mugworth powder, the soybean powder is a lot like peanut powder. the mochi is REALLY thin, stretchy, sweet. the filling is SUPER SWEET, smooth. preferred the red bean over the lima bean. $2.50 each and u must get 4, 6, or 8. SERVICE: waited in line behind 13ish people? 20mi wait. order at a window. efficient service was nothing special. received mochi fast since only got 4 OVERALL: not smt i crave or would get often, but im also not a big bean mochi fan. hopefully service is consistent and i just came on a bad day
google avatar

Irena S.

Yelp
This place I think makes the best mochi in the bay. There's always a super long line out the door especially if you come like in the late morning (except randomly on this past Saturday, there was no line, maybe because of a holiday weekend?) We got a box of 4 and a box of 10, total $35. Pros: - DELICIOUS MOCHIS, alot of options to choose from. the mochi is so soft and QQ texture, and the inner filling is amazing. Love redbean! It's soooo fresh and tasty I understand why they sell out so quickly (the menu will gradually have things crossed out that they're out of as the morning goes by). I like mixing and matching and getting a bunch of different flavors. - Really efficient service, the ladies who work here are fast at boxing and taking your order, so be ready by the time you get to the window so you're not holding up the line. - They do take credit card. Cons: - Street parking in this Japantown SJ area can be difficult if it's a really busy weekend 10/10 will be back again

Yelp
5 stars all around! Everyone needs to check out Shuei-Do and at minimum get a 6 piece box to experience the fresh and delicious mochi they make daily! The staff here are so friendly and helpful. They do take card so no worries on carrying cash. I highly recommend going earlier in the morning when they open because they do sell out on certain items. Parking can be a bit difficult to find on the weekends and lines can get long.. but it's worth it, I promise! My favorite is the butter mochi, I have to always get that and a mix of the other ones. Also, make sure to check out their special flavors!
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
If you're anywhere near San Jose's Japantown, do yourself a favor and stop by Shuei-Do. It's a tiny, old-school shop that's been making fresh mochi and manju. I grabbed an assorted box and honestly, every piece was amazing. The shop is small and gets busy, especially on weekends, but the staff is super friendly and helpful. Heads up: they do sell out of popular flavors, so go early or call ahead if you have your heart set on something.
google avatar

Mika M.

Yelp
I walked by this place many times but this was the first time I stopped to try some mochi. I got 3 different flavors : peanut butter, butter mochi and blueberry. My favorite was the peanut butter. So, soft and chewy and very peanut y taste. The texture of all mochi was very soft and chewy. Everything came out in a few mins! I'll be back to try more flavors.
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
It's no surprise that this little manju shop is always being featured by influencers and news outlets. They have the most amazing flavors and the ooeyest mochi! Worth a stop if you're ever in Jtown.
google avatar

Monica T.

Yelp
My coworker told me about this place and I knew I had to try it. I absolutely loved it. I'll definitely be back for more.
google avatar

Maximiliano G.

Yelp
I've come here a few times and it's always great! I came here early in the afternoon on a weekend and they still had most of their flavors in stock. I ordered about 7-8 different types and it was ready in about 3-4 minutes. They are all really yummy and I recommend coming here!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice little take out manchu matcha shop in Japan Town in Sam Jose CA. Best to order online because the good matcha will sold out in a few hours. Order thru the window. No eating in shop. These matchas are to die for. Very delicious. Every single one is delicious. Can buy single or gift box sizes. Reasonable prices. Very fresh.
google avatar

Trina H.

Yelp
I had this saved for so long but have not been able to get it until now since they are closed 3 days out of the week. I got a box of 4: yomogi, green tea, kinako, and pink white. The mochi skin is so soft and the filling is perfect sweet. Really enjoyed it with my matcha. If you're in the area during the right time I highly recommend. Also would make a good gift

Yelp
Not a local and have never heard of this shop before. I'm not the biggest fan of mochi, but after trying this I fell in love xD . My Partner's sister got me a box assortment of fresh made mochis. I don't remember which one's which but they all tasted amazing. The mochi was so soft & chewy, despite that its been in a 8hr drive. My top favorite was probably the butter mochi and the one with kinako powder. If you happen to pass by Japantown in San Jose, definitely check this place out and grab yourself a sweet treat ;)
google avatar

Janet D.

Yelp
I've been hearing about this almost hidden mochi shop in San Jose's Japantown. I was worried about the take-out mochi selling out, and they almost did when I got there! Many of their flavors were sold out but I was able to try their yomogi, kinako, pink tsubu, and pink white mochis. From my first time going, I love being able to pick out my own box! They have different tray amounts and you can individually select what you want in your box. The cashier was very nice in helping me understand how to order and letting us know what was sold out. They were also very quick to pack up the mochi and hand it out to you! It seems they were card-only so remember that! I would love to bring a box to visiting friends or family to try! The fresh mochi was not overly sweet and had a soft, chewy consistency. My favorite mochi I tried was the kinako! I would definitely recommend it. I have brought so many people here as it is such a local spot. They have all loved this special taste of Japan in San Jose! Be sure to enjoy the mochi as soon as possible even though they do not have any seating. Since they make their mochi fresh, it could harden quickly. Take it home and enjoy it within the next few days.

Yelp
This mochi shop has been in my bookmarks for a looong time! Unfortunately, I went a little late in the day so they were already sold out of half of their options. At least, I got to try the peanut butter, chichi dango, and yamogi. As a peanut butter lover, I enjoyed the strong peanut butter flavor. Paired with the soybean powder on the outside of the mochi, the peanut butter mochi was very fragrant and nutty. The chi chi dango was soooo soft. I need to know how they got it to such a perfect consistency; it'd cave to the weight of your fingers--even if you held it gently--but you wouldn't come away with sticky fingers. Honestly, they say it's disrespectful to play with your food, but trust me, you'll understand when you order it. My favorite of the three was the yamogi. The thick blob of red bean paste melded with the soft mochi layer to create such a wonderful sensation of lightness and an earthy fragrance in your mouth. I seriously can't wait to come back and try other mochi!

It was the perfect condolences gift! A yummy treat that reminded them of their mom/grandmother. The person at the window was patient, explaining all the different choices and it was boxed while I ordered, so only took me a few minutes to pay before I was on my way. I arrived at about 10:40 am, and when I turned to leave there was a line of five people - so definitely get there early. And I just learned that Takahashi Market in San Mateo sells it so I can preorder and pick it up closer to home.

Yelp
I wish I found this place sooner! Shuei-Do is a hole in the wall shop (literally, it's just a window opening where you order and pick up, no inside seating) that specializes in the most delicious Japanese sweets. I randomly had a very specific craving for chi chi dango one day, and I looked all over the local Japanese grocery stores to find some that was fresh, but it was nowhere to be found. All I was able to find at other places was mochi that was filled with bean or ice cream, but sometimes I just want that mochi-like texture with no filling ya know? It wasn't until I was getting Aloha Fresh one day that I walked down Jackson and noticed there was a nondescript mochi shop that had exactly what I was looking for! Shuei-Do has chi chi dango in multiple flavors, and there's lots of combo options for buying, or you can just buy as much as you like. My favorite chi chi dango is their strawberry one. I've also tried their butter mochi, which is really good. Everything I've tried at this place so far has been deliciously soft and chewy, and not too sweet. I would definitely recommend checking Shuei-Do out! I haven't found anywhere else like it out here, and I'm so happy I now have a go-to spot for when I'm craving chi chi dango! Also excited to come back and try more of their treats :)

Yelp
My boyfriend and I visited Shuei-Do Manju Shop on a Saturday after failing to wake up early enough to get the Ichigo Daifuku from Santo Market. It was a cute little manju shop in Japantown. This was my actually second time having their mochi, but it's been years. Last time I had it, my friend had surprised me a few mochis because she thought I would like them. Usually, I'm not a huge red bean fan, but I let it slide because of how soft and yummy the mochi was. This time, my boyfriend and I got a 6-piece box to sample which included the yomoji, pink tsubu, kinako, brown inaka, peanut butter, and the POG flavored chi chi dango (Passion Fruit, Orange, Guava). My favorites were the kinako, brown inaka, and the peanut butter. The peanut butter one, in particular, really impressed us. The nutty flavor paired so well with the soft, chewy mochi. It makes sense, since kinako powder, which has a slight nuttiness, is often paired with mochi. That peanut butter flavor quickly became my boyfriend's favorite, while I couldn't get enough of the kinako-flavored ones. They were soft, plump, sweet, and delicious. The POG chi chi dango also surprised me. You could definitely taste the fruity POG flavor and if you like mochi mainly for the chewy texture, this one may be for you since it's all mochi with no filling. As for the yomoji mochi, I was hoping for more of a distinct mugwort flavor, but it ended up tasting very similar to the pink tsubu, so I couldn't tell them apart too easily. Overall, every flavor was solid. I'll definitely be back to try the butter mochi if I'm ever in San Jose's Japantown again!

Yelp
The line outside this manju shop can get super long and intimidating on Saturdays, but I discovered that there is pretty much no line on Sundays since so many businesses in Japantown are closed. It's the perfect time to stop by, especially since parking is also free on Sundays! I got a pack of 4 for $10 and picked the yomogi, monaka, chi chi dango, and butter mochi. I love how the mochi here is a little grainier than the store-bought kind and you can taste the natural sweetness from the rice. The yomogi was stuffed with smooth azuki beans. The azuki filling was so tasty but it was pretty sweet so I wish I had some tea or coffee to pair with it. The chi chi dango and butter mochi are great options for anyone looking for manju without beans. The chi chi dango really showcases how soft and tasty the mochi is. Their butter mochi is tasty but I think I would rather get their other mochi-based manju because the soft mochi is too good. The manju is not cheap but the pieces are definitely shareable (and rice and beans are pretty filling). With so few shops making homemade manju these days, this place is a must-try!

Yelp
Mochi shops aren't very common and that's what makes this place unique. This mochi shop hand makes their own mochi and sells a variety of different types. I got a pack of four. Chi chi dango (5/5): Todays flavor was guava. It was very chewy and flavorful. I recommend if you just want mochi without filling. Green tea (5/5): Very strong matcha flavor and very chewy. Butter mochi (5/5): This was savory and provided a lunch type flavor. Strawberry danko (5/5): Had to wait till 12 for this, but it was great. Still the best mochi shop in town.

Yelp
I came here on the weekend and there was a line up but moves quickly. It's takeout only and the menu with photos are listed on the window. They switch up the chi chi dango flavors and have butter mochi on the weekends. My favorite was definitely the butter mochi! I gave it 4 stars because I'd like to see fruits inside the mochi as a menu item. It's still a nice place to try traditional mochi.

Yelp
My first memories of getting manju was when my parents would drive to San Jose to pick up a box. It has been a stop for me whenever I come to the San Jose area and I have to make sure to also pick up a box for my parents. I love the pink white and peanut butter. Make sure to get there early or the faves may sell out. I've tried ordering in advance as well and that made pick up easy!

Yelp
My husband and I decided to come by to grab some manjus this past Saturday before we leave the Bay Area. We got there around 1030AM and there was a line. The line does move fast so don't be discouraged. There is no indoor seating -- in fact, you can't go inside. You order at the window and they call your name when it is ready. I decided to go for an 8pc tray and I got two pieces of strawberry chi chi dango, two pieces of milk chi chi dango, two pieces of kinako, one peanut butter, and one butter mochi. I also got a 4pc variety for my friend back home. Their manjus were so soft! I loved the texture! The chi chi dango have very light flavors and wasn't too sweet. The kinako was on the sweeter side and was probably my least favorite. The peanut butter one was really good too but I think our favorite was the butter mochi! The butter mochi is only available on Friday-Sunday. Definitely good quality manjus. The price is on the higher end. It was $20 for 8 pieces and $10 for 4 pieces. But if I was in the area again, I wouldn't mind coming back for more!

Yelp
Wow shocked that I first reviewed this place 15 years ago. It's now $2 a piece just FYI and just as good as they were 15 years ago
