Google
An above-average traditional omakase experience, but the food quality at times leaves a bit to be desired. We came here for my mother's birthday, and were greeted with excellent service and welcoming atmosphere. They started us off with two appetizers, a miso soup and steamed egg bowl. Both of these were misses, to be honest. The half-cooked sushi in the soup left me with a weird contrast of flavors, and the addition of roe and raw fish in the steamed egg gave an oddly fishy taste to the dish. Afterwards, came the sushi - which was all pleasantly surprising. All the ingredients were imported directly from Japan, so you could really taste the distinct Japanese flavors come out with every piece. Some standouts include - the eel, A5 wagyu, fried shrimp, toro, and maki. I would've liked a bit more time in between courses to savor each piece, but I also appreciated the speed at which the chefs made them so none of us were ever hungry. All in all, a pretty good experience. I just think the appetizers need a little work. Maybe something simpler like a classic miso soup with egg tamaki would've been better for the palette.

Google
The best Japanese omakase restaurant in town! The food was very fresh and tasty. The chef made each dish right in front of us. All the sushi was fresh and delicious. The staff were kind, and the place was very clean. I had a great time and definitely want to go again!

Google
This place is a hidden gem in Leonia. I came in for the $59 omakase event and was honestly blown away by the quality. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. You can tell the chefs care about what they’re serving. The owner is incredibly kind and generous, he made the whole experience feel even more special. The staff is friendly and attentive without being over the top. For the price and quality, it’s hard to beat. I’ve been to higher-end omakase spots that didn’t leave me as satisfied as this one. Definitely coming back soon.

The sushi was top-notch and incredibly fresh. The service was excellent, and I’ll definitely be coming back.

A 14-course omakase for only $59?! I'm in! I found out about this special through Instagram. They only have two seatings per night (5:30 and 7:30), and it's only Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Each session has 8 spots, and you have to book and prepay on OpenTable. You really do have to be on time because they don't start unless everyone is there, even if you're not in the same party. Our party of four came on a Thursday and I arrived right at 7:30 and it seemed like they were waiting on us. They brought out the two appetizers, but we waited a while until the actual omakase portion. That didn't start until 8:15, so that was kind of late. The courses include: 1. Chawanmushi with ikura - I really liked this version. As you eat more of it, there are some surprises hidden in the egg, like mushrooms, and fish cake. It was fun having each bite different than the next, even though it's such a small dish 2. Otoro roll in miso (?) soup - I thought this was a little strange at first but it grew on me 3. Chilean sea bass 4. Otoro w uni - always a favorite 5. Yellowtail belly - I'm seeing more and more yellowtail belly on omakase menus and it's another one of my top contenders 6. Itoyori 7. Kinmedai (golden eye red snapper) 8. Scallop & caviar 9. Kohada (gizzard shad) - this is the one with the silver skin. I usually don't like it because it's super fishy and it was what I expected 10. Shimaji (striped jack) 11. Engawa (fluke fin) 12. Unagi (eel) - I don't like eel but I did like the sauce, which they said takes a few days for them to make in house 13. Red shrimp - another fave of the night, especially the crispy shrimp head. Although it was fried, it still tasted light 14. Miyazaki beef Next time, I would opt for the 5:30 session because you know they have to be on time in order to clear out for the 7:30 seating. I'd also come back to check out their regular menu. Prices are affordable for higher quality sushi. I'm glad North Jersey is finally getting some real sushi places.

Google
I highly recommend Shumi Sushi Restaurant for an unforgettable dining experience. The sleek and lovely atmosphere sets the stage for a remarkable culinary journey. The service was excellent, and the food was exceptionally fresh, with each dish bursting with delectable flavors. From the perfectly crafted sushi rolls to the flavorful sashimi, every bite was an absolute delight for the taste buds. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking an exceptional sushi dining experience.

Google
Every dish was made with care and tasted amazing. It's the first time I've found a restaurant like this around here. The teriyaki sauce was perfectly balanced, and the sushi was top quality. I didn’t expect much, but I feel like I was truly treated. Absolutely the best.

Google
We ate here two times so far: omakase and regular menu. The food is amazing with high quality seafood and service is even better. The staff checks on your table very often to make sure you are doing well. They also provided a surprise complimentary appetizer to try which was won our heart especially since it was really good.

Yelp
Shumi in Leonia is easily one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while. I went for their $59 omakase event and was genuinely impressed by the quality and presentation of every course. The fish was super fresh, perfectly seasoned, and each piece felt thoughtfully crafted. What really stood out, beyond the amazing food, was the hospitality. The owner is incredibly kind and welcoming, he really goes out of his way to make sure guests have a great experience. The staff is also attentive and friendly without being overbearing. It's rare to find this level of quality and service at such a reasonable price. I've been to much more expensive omakase spots that didn't deliver nearly as well. Can't wait to go back again soon.

Yelp
Instead of ordering from the menu, we treated ourselves with Omakase (leaving the choice up to the chef) @ Shumi. I am usually a huge fan of Omakase so I was absolutely looking forward to it. Also, if I had to choose, I do prefer sushi (with the properly seasoned rice) than sashimi (just raw fish). Usually, the rice needs to be perfectly cooked - not too mushy and not too al dente - with the right amount of vinegar, salt & sugar. Honestly, for the price of $140 Omakase, it was not up to our expectations. The only good thing was that we got to try a whole new array of sushi, ones we usually do not find on the menu. There was an appetizer dish of salmon in soy sauce, chawanmushi (Japanese style egg custard steamed in a cup), soup (quite weird with rolls in it), and 4 trays of sushi (6 sushi on each), then finishing the Omakase with ramen. If you order ahead for a group of 8 people, you can reserve a private bar at the back with your personal chef at a much reasonable price of around $60 (with 12 sushi instead of 24 that we had). The sushi was quite small - we wished the fish would be bigger .... A great ambience, great service, but not up-to-expectation food. (Again, this is a very personal opinion ^^)

Yelp
My dad and I stumbled on this place for my birthday and holy moly!!! What an amazing vibe. The staff was incredibly friendly and the food came out so quickly. I got the Shuju Roll and rainbow roll and my dad got the Lunch special. Everything was delicious. They even have omakase which I'll definitely be back for.

Yelp
Came in for omakase express with a friend for lunch. We did the express which came with 8 pieces of sushi and 2 courses of appetizers. The first course of apps was miso soup with edamame, I was not impressed with this. 2nd course was chawanmushi with shrimp and roe, actually it was one of my favorite things out of everything... which means the omakase was underwhelming. The scallop, botan ebi, and toro was good. The other pieces including yellowtail and snapper, not good. I didn't think it was worth $55 pp. They gave us shumai on the house, which was nice of them, but still didn't make the experience better. The ambiance is nice and it's clean and spacious inside. It's byob and decent sushi but not the best. I felt the quality was lacking and the apps and chefs choice of sushi can be improved.

Debra J.

Yelp
If you like Japanese food, this is the best place in Bergen County. Tempora and Udon were excellent. Sushi was also good. Make reservations as there are limited tables and counter space

Yelp
Do NOT order to-go from here! I ordered two chicken teriyaki bento boxes for dinner and the entire experience was a nightmare. Here's why: 1. The photo you see below (sorry I should've taken one before I dug in) includes 4 pieces of shumai, 4 pieces of tempura, 6 pieces of a roll that only contains overly sweet egg, and chicken teriyaki. They charge $28 for this which is way too expensive. 2. They claim if you pay in cash, you get 5% off. Once I got home and reviewed the receipt, they charged full price for everything. 3. I cannot recommend the food. The chicken teriyaki and egg in the "sushi roll" were way too sweet. The only thing I enjoyed was the shumai which was most likely from a frozen bag. Highly disappointed by this establishment...will not be returning again.

Yelp
I've been to the Ridgewood location months ago and I wanted to try out this location because the interior is bigger and I was also in the area. Although the sushi and sashimi lunch special is the same (same price from months ago as well; $21) I felt like the quality of the fish was not as good as before and the portion is definitely smaller (the fish is in smaller pieces and sliced thinner) I do appreciate that they didn't increase the price and I liked that the seating is much more roomy, but I think I'll be going back to the Ridgewood location to see if the quality and portion have changed there as well.

Yelp
It was such a perfect dinner. I had a great experience. The chef was also kind and nice. I will revisit again next time

Yelp
We were a big party and the service was great for how much we were. We basically ordered family style and shared a little but of just about everything! I wish i got more pictures of the food but i was so in the moment that i didnt even think about it. Food was very good, i don't think there was anything i didnt enjoy. The place is beautiful inside and very high end looking.

Yelp
Happy to see another restaurant added to the food scene in Leonia. This one definitely has a more upscale vibe and inside feels surprising luxurious. This kind of vibe is just a bit out of the norm for this quiet little town. We arrived at noon on a Saturday and the restaurant was empty aside for one table. It started to pick up around 1pm. We got the omakase regular ($80 pp) and it was high quality of fish. It was super fresh and I thoroughly enjoyed the sushi and rolls. The fatty and lean tuna, salmon, yellowtail were some of my favorites and every bite I said "wow". It's like butter! The second plate wasn't my favorite (forgot the names but they were white fish). Wrapped up the meal with ramen at the end (included). Overall I was happy with the experience. The service was great - plates were cleared right away and water was constantly refilled without being asked. I highly recommend you give it a try!

Yelp
Great omakase where you leave completely full! Amazing quality and more than enough food that we came out stuffed. It seems pricey when you look at the price but once load of platters come out it seems like a great deal. Aside from all the sushi the fried shrimp was crispy and delicious. The broth for the ramen which was rhe last part of the meal so very flavoful as well. Its BYOB so bring your fave sake.and enjoy
google avatar

Simon C.

Yelp
Fresh, great variety, and really fine fishes for their Omakase sushi choices. Also liked the idea to start the course with a sushi soup and end with a hot ramen. However went with the assumption that sushies would be made in front of you, which turned out were brought to you by waiters. Offering BYOW was also a nice option.

Susan F.

Yelp
Food and service superb. Menu has something for everyone. Creative chef and the freshest fish.

Yelp
Ordered Sushi & Sashimi + Otoro roll $7. Fish quality is ok but sushi piece size is too small.. I have been to many sushiya in nyc and Tokyo but sushi/sari(rice) size is too small.

Yelp
A welcome addition to our little town! I still cannot quite believe that the town of Leonia can now boast a world-class, first-rate sushi and omakase restaurant right on Broad Avenue! Executive Chef David Seo has followed up on the success of his Ridgewood restaurant of the same name with a Leonia location : a spacious, modern venue, a highly attentive wait staff, expert culinary crew, and fresh selections that never disappoint. Treat yourself or someone you love to an omakase (chef's choice) sushi meal that you will not soon forget. The ingredients are extremely fresh, and the variety of fish is most impressive. I especially love the various tuna nigiri I Age Dashi Tofu no have been served here. The combinations of fresh fish expertly sliced, soft rice, and unique sauces and toppings are all so tender that they literally melt in your mouth! But I would be remiss if I did not also sing the praises of the regular menu. I have tried nearly the entire menu and have never been disappointed. Some personal favorites are any of the poké appetizers, particularly the fatty tuna poké. I love all of the special rolls, particularly the Shumi and Leonia rolls. Although I have yet to experience it myself, they have lunch specials as well. This restaurant is truly a gem. FIVE STARS!
google avatar

Aretha Z.

Yelp
We had the omakase. The fish was good, and the cooked courses were delicious as well. However, a caveat is that the service was not the typical omakase experience--at the counter, you do have a view of the chefs preparing the food, but they bring a couple nigiri at a time on plates, and the host explains each course at the table
google avatar

Superkat S.

Yelp
Excellent! Very unique sushi and appetizer options. You can order their Omakase or what we like to do..."create your own tasting menu." Very nice staff. BYOB Keep up the great work!!! We love it!
google avatar

Mn J.

Yelp
This place doesnt serve real omakase experience. It is kind of $140 sushi deluxe platter for one. And fish&rice are very tiny, about half size of other omakase places. Waitstaff are nice but do not recommend here for omakase.
google avatar

Czarina B.

Yelp
Had a great experience last night for dinner at Shumi Japanese Cuisine! The food was delicious and service was amazing! My boyfriend and I both got the omakase and every piece was sooo good! I especially liked the scallop and caviar as well as the fatty tuna. They also gave us complimentary shrimp roll, Chilean sea bass (which was AMAZING!) and chocolate mousse. I also love that the omakase pieces had the perfect amount of rice. A lot of the times, places put too much rice and you don't get to enjoy the flavors of the actual fish.

Tony A.

Yelp
Terrible experience , had a doordash order special for 2 for 1, ended up getting only one and was spoken to aggressively by the staff for the confusion. I called ahead of time to confirm and still messed up the order. Honestly are other options in area and no need to treat a patron in that manner.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
We went to Shumi with a rather large party and they accommodated us to all enjoy the omakase experience. The inside was beautifully decorated and so clean! Service was excellent despite the large party. The food was creative and flavorful, the fish was fresh, and overall excellent. Would highly recommend!

Moonlight R.

Yelp
The place is very clean and the food is amazing. I think some of the workers are new because they didn't seem to understand a few questions I asked about the menu, but other than that, they were very polite and considerate! Excellent place for some fancy sushi.
google avatar

Master J.

Yelp
This is just overall OK as long as you are not getting Omakase. You are paying for: *ambience *BYOB *service was decent *sushi deluxe is OK. The pieces are small but you get more than just tuna, salmon, yellowtail, fluke. The fish is NOT cured, and the rice is NOT warm or seasoned properly. So charging anything beyond $45 for a sushi platter is is absolutely insane.

Yelp
There are so many things wrong with this place. I'm not sure if they're trying to be a more upscale sushi restaurant. Based on the decor, I would assume so but there are too many things that miss the mark. Let's start with the fact that they are over staffed and yet their service is still not good. They forgot to bring out the ramen for the omakase, then lied and said it took awhile to make when it clearly was made in a minute or two. It was clear they forgot. On top of that, our waiter forgot to get the order right and even checked with me, but still messed it up. Then, no one refilled our waters when there were literally at least 20 people staffed and no one at the restaurant. What else? We made a reservation for 6 people and the restaurant was empty, and yet they sat us right next to a loud group of drunk Koreans. They had finished a bottle of Johnny and were yelling and laughing so loudly in our ears. The fact that they couldn't even ask that group to lower their voices or didn't think about seating us further away when there was, again, an ENTIRE 15-20 person staff really blows my mind. Does anyone in this restaurant have any work experience or just simple common sense?? Also, food was just mediocre. All around, it was a horrible choice for us to celebrate Father's Day here and we won't be coming back. I don't know how this restaurant will succeed. The only way anyone rates this place high is if they have never been to an authentic omakase sushi restaurant.
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
Sashimi was perfect. Service too. And the modern decor was just right. This is a great addition to the local restaurant community. Thank you.

Yelp
Best sushi in New Jersey! Great service and wonderful ambiance. One of my favorite restaurants.
google avatar

L B.

Yelp
This was our third time at this restaurant, and will be our last. The restaurant was busy, but by no means full. The issue is that my food was brought out, while my mother never received hers. Even more frustrating is that the manager never came out to speak to us, despite my requesting to speak with him, after we waited for an hour and finally left and went to another restaurant. What occurred today was inexcusable.

Yelp
We really love the Ridgewood location for Shumi, so when we found out that they opened a new location in Leonia, we had to give it a try and it did not disappoint. It was in a bigger space with the similar great clean ambience. The chefs and staff were great as expected, and the sushi was awesome as usual. The omakase is really great, and you get the high quality of some of the best NYC omakase sushi places for fraction of the price! Really melts in your mouth and you can tell how much the chef puts in a lot of thought and takes care of the ingredients. They also had some different items on the omakase from their Ridgewood location. Also, they have a new private omakase room in the back as a new, more premium experience and can't wait to come back and try.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful space. Delicious food. Wonderful service. Several complimentary dishes served. BYOB. RATING A+.

Yelp
We love the Shumi in Ridgewood so we had to try the new opening in Leonia. Sushi is outstanding. Very spacious, clean and friendly staff. Looking forward to trying the private Omakase tasting with David. Congratulations to all !

Yelp
Last Friday, my visit to Shumi in Leonia, NJ left me in awe of their exceptional omakase experience. The chef's culinary mastery was evident in every perfectly crafted dish, delighting my taste buds with a symphony of flavors. The attentive service and impeccable presentation added a touch of elegance to the evening. For anyone seeking a truly memorable dining experience, I highly recommend Shumi! On the side note, I overheard there is a some kind of rivalry going on between the other Korean japanese restaurant down the block choo choo train and this one. And it kind of make sense if you take a closer look at the bad reviews for Shumi, a lot of them are pretty suspicious. lol.

Nan P.

Yelp
Excellent food, great attentive service, relaxing modern atmosphere, you can watch the sushi being made, BYO. Upbeat music just the right volume. We had an amazing time.
google avatar

Lizette V.

Yelp
Good quality food. Very fresh fish. Portions served are not overwhelming. The setting is quite theatrical. Service can be slow on a very busy day. Weekend evenings are packed. You should call to reserve.
google avatar

Kamran M.

Yelp
Regular customer at their Ridgewood location. The sushi is one of the best in NJ along with great ambience. Friendly and accommodating staff. Look forward to trying Leonia location this Friday! Don't listen to any bad reviews, just go! been there 5 times and still get excited when we go! If sometimes service slow it's ok, food is worth it.

Yelp
Omakase!!! If you're not ordering omakase, what are you doing???? Leave it to the pros(chef) and let em feed you, you won't regret it. Great addition to the neighborhood, I had an amazing omakase meal and think most people would enjoy it as well. Beautiful interior, clean and sleek. Would definitely return

Yelp
Love love love the omakase special. Can't beat it. Consistently delicious. Definitely unique omakase. Outside of that rolls and apps are amazing. Love the chef special Toro. Do not miss. Best part is byob.

Yelp
The experience we had last Saturday at this restaurant was abominable, and, I am sure we are not the only ones. Here is what happened. It started from the time we walked in. Our reservation for 4 people at 7PM and was made in person around 1PM that day. We walked in at 1 minute before 7 and saw that there were multiple available tables and the sushi bar area was empty. However, the first person that greeted us with her iPad could not locate our reservation. Neither could the second person on her iPad. Finally, a third person came by with her iPad and was able to locate the reservation and brought us to our table. To the right of our table was a setting for 7 and to the left a setting for another 4 - both empty. The sushi bar was also empty. We sat there for around 15 minutes until, finally, someone came over to take our orders. That is when their outrageous and unprofessional actions started. I ordered an entree which includes soup as an appetizer. My wife ordered the sea bass entree and a separate appetizer. Our male friend ordered a roll and dumpling appetizer. Our female friend was going to order the "sushi deluxe" but wanted to know what was in it, because there are certain types of fish she will not eat. She asked the server - and the response was "it is chef's choice" which is not an answer. We requested that she ask the chef what was in it. The response - "it is chef's choice". We requested, again, that she just go the 20 feet across the room and ask the chef what fish was in the dish - same response - "it is chef's choice". Finally, another server came by and I explained that all we wanted was to find out what was the "chef' choice" so we could see if the dish was acceptable. That server did it and we found out that there were "choices" that were not acceptable. As a result the order was changed to 2 rolls, which the new server put on her iPad. We then sat there waiting while the tables on either side filled up and the customers placed their orders. The 2 rolls our friend ordered showed up - but nothing else. The people on either side and throughout the now filled restaurant started getting their orders - but not us. I started asking servers what was going on - but no response. Finally, I got out of my chair around 8 PM and walked to the back to ask where our food was - the only response was that I was told I could not be there and to go back to my seat. Our friend finished her food and sat there while the rest of us waited. About another 10 minutes later our male friend received his roll and dumplings at the same time - even though one was supposed to be an appetizer. Nothing for me or my wife. Now it was around 8:20 and still no food. Again I stood up and was told to sit down. The "manager" comes over and I am trying to get him to focus on this - he tells me that there was no other orders. So it seems that when the second server came over her iPad did not get the information from the first iPad - even though they are all supposed to be connected to a central order area. Instead of wondering why only 2 of the 4 people were eating no other orders were put in they had ignored us for more than an hour. This server then put in the order and then around 5 minutes later, comes back to tell us that the sea bass entree is no longer available - only the appetizer. No apology no explanation. We say we will accept it. Another 20 minutes. The tables all around with the people who came in after us finished their meals. People who had just came in to the restaurant a few minutes before are getting the miso soup and other portions of their meals. We get nothing, not even the soup. I ask for the manager again and he comes by - no explanation - no apology - just his hand on my back saying that it will be coming shortly. Finally, they deliver our food, including my soup and my wife's appetizer - all at the same time. So now we have to eat while our friends sit there and watch. This was our 3rd time going here - the first time the service was also bad - but this was just after they opened so we gave it some slack as they apologized. The second time it was a bit better - but still not up to normal standards. This was horrendous. What is the worst part is that the "manager" was so condecending. He never apologized for the complete incompetence of the staff or himself. At all times he and the staff acted like nothing was wrong and, basically, it was our fault. They did not care about us. They did not serve us. Yet, they expected to get a tip. One other thing - do not go there if you want a nice relaxing and quiet meal. The music is extremely loud necessitating all diners to talk loudly to just here each other across the table.

I usually do not write negative reviews, but I feel like I have to today. I was treating my mom to a Valentine's Day dinner and when we got there, the ambiance was nice and the place was very clean. We were excited to have dinner here. But we ended up leaving before we could even order. When my mom and I ordered our drinks (sprite and hot tea), our waiter was a bit rude. But that is okay because we all have bad days. But when our waiter brought my mom her hot tea, he accidentally spilled it on her pants. The tea was piping hot, as I could see the steam from the spilled tea. He froze and whispered sorry and then proceeded to also drop a cup of ice on her...Then he just walked away. We waited a couple of minutes for someone to come over and give a proper apology or even a napkin to wipe the hot tea off of my mom. But nothing. She had to call someone over. The sushi chefs were giving us dirty looks as we decided to leave. We did not want to spend our money and time at an establishment that does NOT care about good customer service. And we certainly did not deserve those mean looks we got from the staff when we decided to leave. Disappointing..

Yelp
We spent $110 on omakase and it was one of the worst experience I had in my life. The server was so slow and the food portions were so small.

Yelp
I can't really rate this off the food but I pulled in and pulled out basically when I pulled in there were 2 waiters sitting there smoking cigarettes we thought that was very unsanitary and picked a different restaurant

Yelp
Very cool decor with a beautiful sound system which is kept at a very low background volume. Great rolls, awesome salads. Very happy to have found this gem.

Yelp
Finally, a sublime Japanese omakase place in Ft. Lee/Palisades area. We love the Ridgwood branch but were too far away. Modern decor, attentive service, and excellent food. Will be back again.

Yelp
Had a lovely three course lunch on a Saturday when visiting for a nearby rowing competition. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff was perfection, the food was out of this world. We will come back again.
