Your Guide to Eating in South Sacramento | Eater SF

"Open for just one year, Khao Soy House is one of the newer kids on the block. The Saetern family made the move from Alaska to Sacramento in 2009 in order to serve the community some of the best Lao-style papaya salad, in which crispy and cold green papaya strands mingle in a sauce spiked with brightness and funk." - Illyanna Maisonet

I only come here for the Thai Boat Noodles when my friends crave for it. From what they tell me, its the only place where you can get it closest to authentic. It can get busy on weekends and under staffed however service is still OK. I’m not really into Thai cuisine so I can’t say that would like to try their other menu items because they just don’t seem too appealing to me. Just my bias. The Thai Boat Noodle is decent. Comes with pork rinds and cooked blood upon request. Bean sprouts, green onion, beef meatballs, tripe, tendon, and a few slices of what appears to be brisket. You can also ask for more pork rinds on the side. It tastes better and adds more texture versus them adding it to the soup themselves which gets soggy by the time it gets to you. You will just have to try it out for yourself if it’s your thing. A small bowl of it is reasonably priced compared to a bowl of Pho and will fill you up equally. Perhaps next time I’ll do a review on their Thai-style curry.

Come check it out ya. Try for yourself. I'm not a big Thai Food eater but gotta say food tastes delicious to me. Great service and clean. Family run restaurant.

Google
Great place to grab a bowl of noodles. I love the noodle at this restaurant because I always eat my noodle with all the add in spices, but for this boat noodle here, I just eat it as it is. The restroom is also clean good job.

It's been a year & I decided to go back today to this restaurant, I noticed that the owner has changed, it's now owned by Hmong Folks. As a Thai, that worried me, how can it be authentic taste of traditional Thai cuisine when it's not owned by Thai people? In my opinion I would not recommend it, has to be owned by Thai people. I always loved the boat noodles and ordered a small to go, now it doesn't taste the same anymore, it has this weird after taste plus it's really sweet. The portion was very small also. You will see the photo of how much noodle they gave me. Sadly I won't be coming back.

Google
This is one of my go-to spots for a good bowl of Boat Noodles in Sac. Iced Thai tea is on par. The papaya salad is good & made Lao style. Be careful because sometimes their chili peppers are 🔥🔥🔥. The staff are nice & service is fast. Don't expect five star service because like most mom & pop owned Asian restaurants, it's hard to come by. This place is easy to miss on Florin Road though so keep your eyes out. There's plenty of parking though.

Google
The boat noodle was really good in terms of flavor. It had more of a sweet and savory taste than previous boat noodles I've had which really stood out. Portion wise, it was less than I expected for a large. Quality over quantity they say.

Google
Pho was good but the chili oil they had was super spicy. Which is a great thing since a little will give the spice kick without flooding it with other pepper that would ruin the overall taste of pho in general. Their boat noodles is supposed to be great which I will try next time.

Google
Completely surprised when the food was brought to the table. Yellow curry Laum Beef and mango sticky rice all of it was fresh and delicious.

Yelp
The best Thai food I have ever had! I got to try so many new dishes, and I loved it! The inside of the restaurant has plenty of open walkway space because tables are placed near the walls. It is surprisingly bigger inside than I thought with a good amount of seating. Customer service was great, and food came out fast. Our server reread the orders to make sure everything is correct because they have a policy that does not allow remakes or refunds on incorrect orders. A waiter also came by a few times to refill our waters. The food portions are pretty generous and everything is so flavorful and delicious! I got a small Thai boat noodle combination, and it was just the right amount because I was stuffed after finishing it and eating some of the appetizers. The broth is unique and amazing. I saved my leftover soup to make more noodles the next day. The beef larb and papaya salad had the perfect amount of spice and flavor. The chicken noodle was a little oily, but still very yummy! I am already planning my next visit because I want to try their khao poon.

Yelp
Wow! The food here is so good! The Thai food is amazing. The Pad Thai is easily some of the best I've ever had. If you love that strong tamarind flavor with a touch of sweetness, you'll be obsessed with this one. The Khao Soi broth is also really tasty. And you definitely can't forget the Pa Kra Pow--the light sauce on that dish is perfect. On top of all that, the customer service is A+. I can't wait to go back! The space is also huge! Lots of seating for everyone and space away from one another.

Yelp
I don't know how I keep ending up at places that make their fried rice like this. So pale so flavourless. They didn't even have soy sauce and it's pricey! $16 for bland rice and 5 pieces of flavourless pork. I also got garlic chicken, LIGHT spice, and I'm on fire. Don't know if that's some joke or something but definitely won't be coming back. The only reason I didn't ask for a refund is because it's a company trip and I will already be reimbursed. Guess take out isn't the way to go

Yelp
Minimal parking. Lots of indoor dining. Could definitely use an update. Everything looks a bit run down. Service was decent. The boat noodles was pretty good (tip: get the large, the small is more of a child size than anything). The pad thai is made fresh to order. Definitely one of the better items here. I would not recommend the pineapple fried rice. The rice was a bit bland and the toppings was too bulky. This was not my first time here and won't be my last.

Yelp
My favorite place for especially Lao Sytle Papaya. Favorite mom and pop restaurant when I come visit my mom.

Yelp
Good portions, good prices. We got boat noodles, pad see ew & pad thai. Everything was great! Boat noodles needed just a little more and the chili flakes provided helped it a lot. Pad see ew was perfect, usually people make it too sweet but it was a good balance. Chicken in both noodle dishes were tender. Pad thai was saucy and exactly how i like it. Quiet place, refilled your water a lot. Would come back again!

Yelp
This place feels pretty authentic! The etched wood is really nice and there are a lot of Thai pictures and decor inside. I did enjoy the boat noodles but I feel like it didn't really taste like boat noodles. Tasted more like pho. The spice level here is definitely on the higher side, so if you are not great on the spice, you might not want to get a high level of spice. The pad se ew I got was good - I really liked the Chinese broccoli in this. I think the fish cake app was good, but it was just fried fish cakes and nothing to write home about. I might try some other stuff from here in the future.

Alisi W.

Yelp
The food was so tasty and bursting with flavor. We had the crab rangoons, pad krao paw, pork fried rice, yellow curry with chicken, pork Laab, Lao papaya salad and a soup. The papaya salad was so tasty with the right amount of kick.

Yelp
If you want authentic Thai food, this is your spot. It's a hole in the wall with a tiny parking lot, so I can see why this would be a popular take out spot. The inside isn't really appealing, but the food is where they shine. If your food isn't spicy enough, they do offer a spice rack as well with different pickled thai chilis, jalapenos, dry chili, etc. You know a Thai/Lao spot is legit when they even have sugar on the table lol IYKYK. Their spice levels are Thai spicy so if you're normally a medium somewhere else, make sure you go one level down. Thai boat noodle here comes in two sizes, but get a large unless you're weak haha It comes with all the good stuff in the combination version but if you don't like tripe and tendon (like me) there is an option for just meat or meatballs. The broth is so deep, rich and flavorful even without anything added. My parents loooove the thai boat noodle here, and will make it a point to stop here for lunch/dinner any time they're in the area. I hardly ever order crab rangoon but I was in the mood for something cheesy this day. This was a solid choice because their version is pretty dang good. There is hardly any green onion or crab, it's really all cream cheese, but it's sweet and creamy and really yummy with the sweet dipping sauce they provided on the side. I would get this again. My sister and I decided to share the drunken noodles and the Pad Prik King with chicken. We decided on medium spicy for both but lemme tell you... this would be considered hot or Thai hot in other Thai restos. It was so damn spicy but it hurt so good! The rice noodles they use are sooo thick and silky, and they were so generous with all the meat, veggies and noodles. The pad prik king is basically a green bean stir fry. The green beans in this were nice and crunchy but the chicken was a bit dry. Entrees do not come with rice so make sure you order a side of rice to go with this. Portion sizes are large and great for sharing! Thai tea was creamy and sweet, and perfect to wash down all the spice we were inhaling. Never a bad choice if you want something other than water. This isn't a place to bring your first date, but it's a low key hidden gem.

Yelp
This place is located on florin and is the BEST place to get boat noodles made the authentic way! The entire party got an order of boat noodle because that's how great it is (along with some other things of course). I love to highlight the best dishes in places, but the food we ordered was spot on. The fried chicken isn't very seasoned because it pairs well with other side items like papaya that has plenty of flavor (eating Lao/Thai 101). The papaya was made lao style and had just enough padaek in it. You can never go wrong with luch sin (meatballs) either. The fish cake was equally good, and the sauce really made it pop! Despite it being in a somewhat sketch neighborhood, it is so worth the trip. The service is quick and the food comes out fresh and delicious

Yelp
My favorite place to go for authentic Boat noodle...I knew the original owner Pa before she sold it to the new owner but the flavors are still the same. Definitely recommend this place

Yelp
Curry is good. Ground pork laab is good. Everything is good upset for the eggplants beef. The eggplants was still hard, not soft, and not so much flavor. And I totally forgot to take picture of the food. Smh!!

Yelp
Best thaiboat I've had in NorCal, the broth was dark, rich, and flavorful. They didn't skimp on noodles nor the protein. Saying so nothing beats the thaiboat from Thailand or other restaurants in SoCal (Thai town), but this hit the spot, and I left satisfied. Definitely add in the dry chili flakes, sriracha, and their chill oil The lao style sausage was spot on as well. Shout out to the new Hmong owners! Thx for the great food and service

Yelp
Good is excellent!! Best thai food in sacramento. Service is excellent will be coming back.

Yelp
We've been coming here for awhile and it's our go to for Thai food. Depending on when you come, the food comes out relatively fast. There are also a lot of seatings so if you have a large party they would be able to accommodate you. My favorite here is their cream cheese wontons. I don't know what they do to it, but they make it so good. It's so creamy and the crust is so light. I also really like their beef basil and duck curry. Highly recommended! Their boat noodle is also very good. It's packed with so much flavor. The only thing I wouldn't recommend here is their kao poon. We ordered it once and it wasn't that good. Other than that, their solid and I recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Yelp
Saturday, 4/02/2022 - Went for lunch at "Siam PA House" restaurant off of Florin Road. Address is 3010 Florin Rd, Sacramento, CA 95822. It's close to Florin high school, 2ish buildings Down from Church's Chicken, next to a car shop. If you blink, you'll miss the restaurant. I did and I missed it. Lol. Upon arrival: Pros: 1) small parking lot. But there was parking. Glad it's not paid parking. ;) 2) restaurant is clean. Plates, bowls, silverwares, cups, tabkes, chairs, etc were all clean. 3) drinks tasted good. Water tasted good. No metal taste. 4) tables are nicely spread apart. 5) all of the food dishes we got were great! No over powering of any one seasoning. Not overly salty. Perfect blend. Every dish tasted great. 6) our server was very nice and professional. She checked on us several times. She even took our photos for us. 7) bathroom clean. Cons: 1) no cons! Conclusion: I really liked this restaurant. Foods were perfectly cooked, great service, clean, nice ambiance. I would go here again. Try this place if you haven't yet.

Yelp
Togo. Boat noodle Pork egg roll Pad Thai. Food was ready on time after calling picked up no problem. Cashier was great gave me extra chili Boat noodle: 4/5delicious! The broth was rich n earthy had a clean flavor to it came with plenty of meat. Only thing I didn't like was the stale pork skin they gave me. Pork egg roll. 2/5 Although is was crispy. It was very bland and had no flavor to it at all. It was mostly noodles as well wish it had more meat in the roll. Pad Thai 3/5 If you like sour pad Thai this place is for you! I prefer mine on the savor n sweeter side. It came with plenty of meat which was greater.

Yelp
Great Thai food at a reasonable price. I've been coming for years, since before the recent ownership change and food is flavorful. Portions are generous and options are limitless. My usual is the Pad see ew, but I've also had the boat noodle (on point btw), beef larb, and drunken noodle. Their pad Thai is obviously a solid choice as well. Service is friendly, fast, and welcoming. Would totally recommend for lunch.

Yelp
I think I found where you y'all natives go for boat noodles now. But I don't gatekeep! Listen, I've been searching for a go-to boat noodles and I finally found one. Best I had in the area so far! Even better if it was raining outside. Remind me of when I would run to the boat noodles cart in rain in Thailand just for a bowl of delicious goodness. Try it and tell me if I'm wrong, but it's exactly what I've been looking for. I got a small and boy, did it get me full and your girl can eat! I saw people got large bowls and trust me, they're huuuge. We got the pad Thai, too. GOOD. I like to try it at diff restaurants bc if it's bad nothing else would be good. They did a good job! Taste like the one you would have on the streets of Thailand. We also got Laos sausage, A+ We also copied other people there and got the crab Rangoon... imma pass on that next time. Good snack though but no crab just a lot of cream cheese. Thai tea was also good. There was only 2 staff running the front when we were there and they hustled! Left a great tip because the food came out quickly and the staff was accommodating and friendly! The best "hole in the wall" kinda? Since it's big, but can be easily missed if you're not paying attention. 1000% would come back!

Yelp
Haven't been here in so many years since whoever owned it the last time. Gave it another try and the food was pretty good. We are always on a hunt for the best boat noodles here in Sac. So far this place isnt bad at all for it.
google avatar

Sue V.

Yelp
Stopped by here on a Saturday to try out the boat noodle. It had a very generous portion of meat compared to noodles and the broth was decent (but not the best I've had in the state). It's in the running for best in town though...I have a few other spots to try before I decide on that. The sausage was good, seasoned well, and came with a pepper dipping sauce. We ordered sticky rice to go with it and it made for a nice meal. I would recommend skipping the meatball appetizers though if you're looking for something made in house. These are basically the same meatballs you can get in pho or boat noodles. Staff was friendly. It's located in the same parking area as the U-Haul store, next to the Asian grocery store (which is a separated lot).

Yelp
First time here. Just come!! The boat noodle was delicious. I am writing this review as I'm sitting here eating it. It's really that good! This will be my go to place from now on when I visit Sac!

Yelp
My go to spot for a quick bite when I am craving Thai Food. The food here is delicious and I recommend people to try this place out.
google avatar

Martin V.

Yelp
Food was really good. We ordered everything mild but it was quite spicy. Just be careful if you can't handle spicy food. The boat noodle broth was very beefy and delicious. Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles were the highlight. Very yummy! Parking is quite small but not too bad.
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
Wow, I cannot believe I never had Thai style noodle soup before. Amazing Boat noodle soup! So flavorful and delicious, I am hungry writing this review. Contain meatballs, tripe, tendons, sliced rare beef, and a savory broth with thin flat rice noodles. It has a such beautiful aroma! I like to add a little bit of noodles, soup, and protein in every bite. This was so fun to eat, I highly recommend the Boat Noodle soup! I also ordered the Pad Thai and Tom Kha Soup. The Pad Thai in most restaurants in town have a tomato tangy sauce. However, the sauce here was very different...sweet and thick. So even thought the noodles were cooked perfectly and had a great amount of chicken, sprouts, peanut crunch, and tofu in the dish, I would not recommend the Pad Thai unless you like sweet sauces on your rice noodles. I love the Tom Kha soup here. The soup was creamy but not thick, flavorful and balanced. I would definitely be back to order the soup and the boat noodle again.
google avatar

Linda T.

Yelp
Wow, just wow! Satisfy my cravings. The chicken drunken noodle was spot on spicy and good! The basil was a perfect hit to eat with the chicken. Oh, request your own spicy level! Medium was definitely spicy. Spicy but delicious! The Thai boat noodle was very flavorful for the broth, but the meat was a little bit tough to chew on. Meatballs were great. Overall, service was really quick and not even a long wait time. Definitely going back when I am wanting some boat noodle and drunken noodles.
google avatar

Theresa S.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I got their fish kapoon and their green chicken curry. The flavors were on point! The only down side is that there was no actual fish in the kapoon and no cilantro for it. That would had been nice to have more greens with it. Overall, I give it a 4.5 rating.

Mai V.

Yelp
My favorite place of all time for their pho, thai tea, and dumplings. The spice to put in the pho is very spicy so be careful how much you should use. When I first time came here I did not know and I ended putting alot and regretted it, but still it was delicious. Only those who have high spice tolerance will love it. Their steam dumpling was delicious. I really like the fry dumpling but once I try the steam one it was soft and yummy.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
Of all the Thai places have eaten, by far this is the best Thai restaurant. Although they are small but they serve some really well seasoned food. I have never been disappointed once. Everything on the menu is extremely good and flavorful. I've brought numerous friends and family here and they all say it's very good. Since being pregnant, I've been craving a lot more Thai food and this has always been my go to place every time the little craves something in my tummy. If you're looking for an authentic Thai restaurant with authentic recipes that's made for Asians, you have to come here!

Huey C.

Yelp
Great portion of food serve. The server is excellent and always helpful. The Thai spice smell amazing.
google avatar

Kao S.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've had this place but I liked their boat noodles the last time I visited. Their condiments also include a lot of spices so I love it.
google avatar

Judy E.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were recommended to go to this place for their boat noodle. WE WERE NOT EXPECTING TO BE BLOWN AWAY! We ordered to go and even at home it tasted amazing. The broth is so rich in flavor. You don't need to add anything at all for it to be delicious! I posted it to my Facebook and everybody was astonished and wanted to know where we got it. It really is the best boat noodle I've ever had. I highly recommend to get it with fat noodles! We got 2 last time, one for him and one for me. Today we ordered 4. 2 for him, and 2 for me
google avatar

Frankie V.

Yelp
Hands down probably the best food I have had since I have been here. Very surprising actually even though we had to Togo the order it was amazing. I can imagine how great it is dining in. We both ordered the Combination boat noodles with flat noodle. Everything was packaged very very nicely and for me that is such a plus when they care about their food. So for the portions they are huge actually. I believe one bowl can feed 2 people. Ok let's talk about the food. Really probably the most flavorful broth I have had. Very savory and rich had my mouth watering! I didn't need to add anything to it. It was perfect. Savory , rich , citrus , tasted like it was infused with bone marrow. If you guys want a good bowl of boat noodles try this place it is freaking amazing !!

Felicia Y.

Yelp
My favorite Thai restaurant in Sacramento. I have enjoyed everything I've ordered on the menu. Worth trying out!
google avatar

Sandy M.

Yelp
Stopped by around noon with a party of 17 and they were able to accommodate us in the back room area. We all basically ordered the boat noodle with different noodle types. They had flat noodle, thin rice noodle, and angel hair noodle. I opted for the thin rice noodle. We ordered an order of fish cake and it was just alright. I would skip it next time. Our noodles took awhile to get here but it's likely because we ordered 15 bowls. The noodle was great! Definitely recommend it. The soup was a little on the salty side, but rich and flavorful. You know when you see the broth that it will be good. Good portion of noodles and meat. The meat was very tender as well, eh JB is a plus. If you are hungry, order the large and you won't regret it!
google avatar

Alyssa V.

Yelp
I love this place with all my heart ever since my mom hooked me onto it. I've been coming here ever since the old Thai owner and now that the new owners own it it still slightly taste the same. I would give this place a good 9.2/10 most of the time. My boyfriend and I usually order #34 which is the Thai boat noodle combo with everything and a raw beef laarb (medium spice, no bitter). We recently got the laarb without the red onions and for some reason it taste so much better because they usually add a lot of the onions and it just wasn't as good because they cut them pretty wide. The Thai boat noodles tastes great most of the time, sometimes I feel like it gets watered down abit depending on how busy they are but it still taste good, a little fish sauce helps revive the flavor. They're also pretty generous with the meats that they add in, I just miss the chopped green veggies they use to put in the soup, now its only cilantro and green onion. Just a FYI, their chili oil is super spicy already so add a lot at your own risk, I usually only add a bit of the chili paste and about two spoons of the oil; the boat noodle pairs great with their pickled jalapeños. Their Thai tea is also really good, not to sweet. The service is decent, I'd give it a 7.5/10. They don't usually come around to refill water as often as they should, even when its not busy but i get it, its usually only 1-2 people working in the lobby during the weekdays. Otherwise, I continue to come here all the time, I even travel from Davis sometimes when I crave it. Will probably post photos my next visit!

Mey S.

Yelp
Went here for their boat noodle but I must say, their broth isn't rich enough like how it should be, and doesn't quite taste like boat noodle. Don't get me wrong, the broth is still good but that boat noodle flavor is still lacking.

Greg M.

Yelp
Parking is a little rough here but the food and service is great. We got boat noodles and they were amazing. Noticed the name changed to Siam Thao House some time ago, but the quality is still consistent.
google avatar

Nicole Y.

Yelp
I've missed having boat noodles living in Hawaii. I was so happy to stop in for lunch with my bestie. We ordered and loved: Boat noodle soup Spicy papaya salad What can I say? It was so good I forgot to thaw a photo of it! Definitely worth the stop and I'd love to return for more of their delicious food!

L T.

Yelp
We got the same thing on our next visit but switched it up with ordering the raw beef larb this time and it was BOMB!
google avatar

Chynita S.

Yelp
Food is delicious and serving portions is good amount. Very spacious. Servers are very friendly. I would recommend this as an authentic Thai/Laos restaurant. Don't say spicy if you can't handle the spiciness.
google avatar

Felisha L.

Yelp
Great place to satisfy your Thai food craving! We came in a weeknight and was seated immediately. The servers were great and attentive. Atmosphere was inviting. Food wise - very authentic Thai / Laos food. All the dishes we ordered were delicious. Both the beef noodle and Thai boat noodles were very flavorful. The noodles came with greens and sprouts already in the bowl. Another great soup is the Tom Zap beef soup which is a hot and spicy soup with several different cuts of beef. We had the Laos papaya and meatballs which was okay. The wings and sausage was delicious. These dishes goes well with sticky rice too! We will definitely come back here again!
google avatar

Yelp
I don't know why I never wrote a review for this wonderful place, but here it is.. I have been going to this restaurant for a very long time and I love their papaya salad (Lao's style). It's never a hit or miss, it's always a hit for me! I have eaten their Thai Boat Noodle and that's delicious too. Their customer service is always great!

Marvel U.

Yelp
Amazing boat noodles and my favorite style of Laab. The soup with tomatoes is not good though. No soup should ever have tomatoes in it lol. Hmong sausage is just ok. Cheese wontons are excellent. The fish is not good. Papaya salad is good. Service is always attentive. I'd suggest to owner to put in a speaker and some background music to add to the ambience. The place could use a good scrub down to the fine details to give it a 5 star. Like take a razor blade and scrape off some of that old buildup through the years once and voila....excellente.
google avatar

ZhiCheng Z.

Yelp
Owner is rude. Refuse to exchange food that's too salty. Do not eat here. Do not come here. There are a lot of pest and bugs too. Nasty food.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
Been here twice and like the food here. Yes not in the best part of town but the food is very tasty and authentic. Medium spicy is like hot at all the Americanized Thai restaurants so keep that in mind. Tried the drunken noodles which were delicious but noticed everyone around ordering the boat noodles. Next time I'll get that when it's winter lol. No white people in sight which of course is a good sign in an Asian restaurant haha.
google avatar

Lucy Y.

Yelp
Everything we ordered were so delicious. The wrap on Cream Cheese crab wonton were so crunchy. Filled with lots of cream cheese, just the way my husband likes it. Never had duck larrb before and I have to say, it was definitely an interesting taste but in a good way! Loved it. Boat noodle, substitute with flat noodle. Can't ever go wrong with that. The Lao style papaya was great. Definitely satisfied the cravings. Customer service was great. The lady checked up on us, during the times we didn't have a mouth full of food. We will be back!

Yelp
Best boat noodles in town. Message me if you find something better. No seriously, message me.
