The Hottest New Bars Around D.C. Right Now

"Sid Gold’s Request Room, a retro piano bar featuring live karaoke, zoomed into the Union Market district last month. Co-founder Paul Devitt, of nationwide Beauty Bar fame, teamed up with former Psychedelic Furs keyboardist Joe McGinty to open the original mid-century influenced piano bar in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood in 2015. Two others followed in Detroit and Nashville. The latest 125-seat edition, situated in an alleyway next to St. Anselm, showcases a mix of classic cocktails (French 75s, palomas, Manhattans, Moscow mules, espresso martinis), plus beers and wines by the glass or bottle." - Tierney Plumb

I would say this is the benchmark and the boiler plate of karaoke. In other words, I thought I was doing karaoke in other bars with the electronic screens on the wall and the karaoke jockeys--no disrespect meant to my friends who helped me have many many good times--but when you get to the top of the mountain everything else is below . Piano player Dan on Sunday nights is amazing. he has a list of almost 800 songs that he can play and I'm confident that he can play many more per request. If you come with just a little bit of a good attitude, and Dan is playing the piano, and you want to sing a song, you will have a good time. That is my experience. It depends on you. Don't be afraid. My experience when I have been there is that everyone there wants you to do well even if you don't have an excellent voice, even if you don't have a very good voice. But you probably have a better voice than you think. I've been to karaoke coast to coast and near the continental divide and there is nothing else like Sid Gold's Request Room. Access via the alley. The neighborhood is the safe Union Market

Love this play! Great place to sing your heart out! Excellent musicians and a very receptive crowd. My new home in DC!

I stumbled upon this place via someone handing out flyers for a Pride comedy show followed by live piano karaoke. It is sort of like a secret gem as the entrance is located in an alley and the sign is pretty aged. I was skeptical at first but up on entering you are greeted by a very classy speak easy like vibe. The comedians were hilarious. Live piano karaoke was a blast and the pianist was top notch talent. He literally could play any song you requested and I tend to pick pretty obscure bands and songs.

LOVE Sid Gold's. Great drinks and a really welcoming atmosphere. Most piano bars are expensive or crowded but, Sid Gold's is classy and guaranteed fun for all. Pianists are great. Staff is friendly and great at what they do. You'll find yourself staying later than you thought you would and with so much to do in Union Market, who's complaining?

Sid Gold’s Kareoke piano bar is such an amazing place. The atmosphere and service is spectacular. A special shoutout to Nina, who accommodated my group of 6 when I arrived late for my reservation and put together a table and chairs for us in the piano room. The pianist John is super talented and makes you feel like a star even if you you’re not a great singer. Cocktails were great. The bar is a 10/10 for a fun night out with friends and family!

This new spot in NoMa is a must visit! Everyone who works there was so lovely and kind. The drinks were super tasty. The ambiance was incredible, it felt like I was transported back in time. The singers that took stage were overall super talented, although there was room for amateurs too! They do hold you to the two hour time limit if it’s a busy night, which makes sense because it’s a smaller space. Would definitely go again, great place to go with friends, listen to great music, and enjoy being in a room full of happy drunk people!

My partner and I came across Sid Gold’s while on our way to another bar in Union Market. We stopped by for a drink, and sat at the bar. The service staff and bartender were lovely, however, the Owner is clearly biased and racist. Another interracial couple came and sat at the bar next to us, and as one does when you sit at the bar, we sparked up conversation. We ordered a round of shots and wanted to order the bartender one as well. He seemed very hesitant, and said that he would need the Owner's permission. I took it upon myself to go over and sit next to the Owner to strike up a conversation to ask if the bartender could take a shot with us. I even offered to buy him a drink as well. I made a joke about how he should comp. the drinks for us seeing as how they were lemon drops with rail liquor. He was insulted I asked (when I was only joking), and immediately said to the bartender "Put these all on her tab." At one point, he got up and moved seats. His approach and customer service to patrons visiting HIS establishment was shocking and unprofessional. At one point, the bartender who is Black broke a glass on accident. I'm surprised everyone in the restaurant didn't turn around the way he was yelling at his staff. We weren't going there for free drinks. We are more than capable of paying for our own. We stopped by because it was a new place we had never visited, and looked interesting, however, after that experience we will never come back. It's clear the owner had something against my partner and I, and the couple whom we met. Both of us are interracial couples. After hearing the way he yelled at his staff for breaking a glass on accident, you can't help but think he's biased towards people of color. I've shared this story with several friends. Seeing similar reviews, I wouldn't recommend giving this business your money. There are plenty of other places in UM where you will be treated equally and fairly.

I went to this spot for some karaoke in DC and wow was I amazed! The crowd is energetic and incredible! And the set up has a casual, classy speak easy feel to it. Even got lucky enough to meet the owner, Paul, whose New York accent dominates the room keeping the mood upbeat. Great times! Probably the best karaoke spot in DC as far as I'm concerned nowadays!

Yelp
This is the classiest karaoke venue I have had the joy to experience. Not knocking my KJ friends one bit, and there are pros and cons, personal taste, etc. to the different flavors of karoake. All varieties are good, some are better, and a few are ... It is one thing to sing with a recorded song in the background, and it is a joy. It is another thing to be singing with a piano player who is playing a real physical instrument, adjusting the volume, tempo to you. There is a unique and certain vibe about this place. Anyway, it's way past bedtime, so in a nutshell, I felt safe walking from my car trans the street. because the DC police -- thank you -- infuse Union Market. The man who seems to be the franchise(?) owner here has a calm, steady and kind gravitas. The servers, I noticed three are courteous, calm, and compassionate. You'll have to wait and hear the piano players. Words fall short. Dan, Zach, thank you. You can carry on conversations here, because the music is not damn deafening. The most beautiful thing is how husbands and wives, spouses, partners, friends, and even former strangers, come together and encourage one another to have a good time, and to enjoy the variety of talent we've been given. It is wonderful to experience a temporay place of refuge and relaxation for a while singing their hearts out, knowing we are here to have a good time, not to look down on anybody,m. In addition, there is extraordinary talent behind the keys, microphones, bar. And the bathrooms, both of them are darn clean. Wanting to post some photos and videos, but don't yet have permission . Drinkers and non-alcoholic drinkers have plenty of choices. The ginger was great. Graham found his boice with encouragement. Erick and Elaine grew and so will their family I want to hear them sing Endless Love. Love never ends David and John. I can't rememsber the last time I heard so many extraordinarily beautiful singers. I miss my father's and stepdather's voices, Maybe the reason I focus on the men. We see one anothers wounds and hopes, sorrows and joys at Sid Gokd's . And we sing together, solo, duet, trinity, quartethquinten to persevere

Yelp
such a unique and fun way to spend a weekend night - the energy was ecstatic in the piano room, one of those places where you really feel the community of dc - a solid cocktail menu with average to high prices. espresso martini was perfectly sweet, needed those 3 beans on top though! - only food is the "sid snack" tray so come satiated - the piano room is small and closed off from the entry way room with the bar. get a reservation as this place is packed from wall to wall and they do not like walk-ins!! - the pianist, John, had a large selection of songs you could choose from. after submitting your name and song, he call our randomly names of submitters. - annoying a bit how he allowed the same people up multiple times, but the energy was positive and everyone joined in singing and clapping along

Yelp
Sid's is another NYC staple that has made it's way to DC, it's so fun! It's all the best parts of karaoke and a piano bar in one. Be aware though: the clientele at Sid's is mostly people who can actually really sing. It's hardly karoke and more of a theater show in the best way! The crowd is awesome and lively and the whole place is a vibe. A few things to note: this place is crowded. Make a reservation if you can if you want to sit in the piano bar. Since the piano bar has a 2 hour table limit people are always moving in and out. I've walked in twice without a reservation and was sat immediately or within 20 minutes each time. The bar is two parts: the piano bar and the regular bar/waiting area. The bar area where you first walk in plays its own music and has it's own vibe in its own right so if you're not into piano bars there's still a place for you here. Be aware there is also a $15 minimum spend to sit in the piano bar though this doesn't seem enforced all the time. It's also unclear if this is per person or per table. The cocktails are $16 so it's an easy spend. The first time we came they told us it was a 2 drink minimum, again, unclear if it's per person or per table so I don't know if they changed the rules or were messing with us the first time but be aware they have a minimum and sometimes they enforce it. If they are going to keep the minimum spend I would recommend having more N/A options, snacks, or just having a cover charge. I don't drink a ton and you're basically required to order a drink and I'm sure you couldn't meet a minimum spend ordering a coke (unclear if they even have soft drinks). The drinks are shockingly strong and although tasty I had to abandoned my 2nd one. More non-alcoholic options would be awesome. They have a menu of classic cocktails. They're all okay. Tasty but nothing to rave about. I wish they would revamp the menu for more options. Service is awesome. Really friendly and attentive! When seated at the piano bar you'll have a server and in the front bar you just order at the bar. Super glad to have Sid's around and like that it's kind of hidden in an alley. It's still pretty busy/popular most nights but you should be able to walk in and grab a seat.

Yelp
In a spontaneous decision, a few friends and I decided to check out this spot because we were in the area. It was a rather chilly night, and we saw that the entrance was in the alley. The first thing you see when you enter is a beautiful bar. You can either sit there or go to the host podium and ask about karaoke. They will seat you if there is space, the karaoke room is totally separate. My friends and I got the last few seats right in front of the stage and piano. Honestly, it was the best seats we could have! It's unclear whether there is a minimum you have to spend, because when I asked the host, he said no. But their menu says you have to spend like $15 or something. Either way, that night it didn't seem to be enforced if that is indeed a thing. They have a bunch of options, nothing that particularly stood out though. The karaoke room was full, and so many folks were singing theater musicals and the like. It reminded me how disconnected I am from that music XD. The pianist was such a pro. She was able to change keys and pitch of pawn request, and the singers made the whole experience feel like it was a competition almost! To be on piano, I was shocked by how many songs were available. Most of my go-to's weren't on there, but there were a few, and the experience felt so rewarding. With the unique experience like that, I am eager to return. I can view the song list online, so I'm going to practice some stuff on there and make my return! If you love karaoke, you have to try live piano karaoke at least once.

Yelp
A time was had at Sid Gold's request room!! I came here with a group of friends and we were seated around the piano. Those are the best seats in the house, so if you can get them get them. Reservations are for 2 hours max. If you don't have a reservation, they do have a bar and seating area outside of the piano room where you can grab drinks and food with friends and hopefully if a spot opens up, you can get into the piano room. This is the route we took, we just came here on a whim and we happened to get great seats. The vibe is so infectious and inviting. There were singers that did not come to play, and even if you couldn't sing well, it was all great vibes. We talked with the group next to us and even performed a song with them. Everyone was so friendly, it was a wonderful time. I'm not even a fan of karaoke, but I would come back here in a heartbeat. The pianist did a wonderful job and would help anyone singing catch the beat or would sing along to keep the pace i'm thinking with the piano is a little different than regular karaoke,. The staff were super nice, but it did take some time to get drinks. You may be better off going to the bar to order and then coming back to the piano room. Overall, love it here. I think this was the most fun I've ever had at a karaoke spot. Go, you'll have a great time!

Yelp
Piano bar fans, Sid Gold has finally arrived to DC in the Union Market district area - in case you missed their one-night pop-up at Buffalo & Bergen, you can check them out right now during their soft opening stage! We were lucky to see John, as he is an amazing pianist - very talented and super fun! Their bar menu offers various specialty cocktails. Service was friendly and efficient. Don't forget to participate in their live karaoke! Definitely a great spot for dates or get-togethers. Plenty of street parking.

Yelp
I am so happy I found this piano bar! It was such a rest time from the moment I walked in. The espresso martinis are delicious! The hostess who greeted us upon arrival was such a sweet heart. The piano player is so talented and everyone in the room was having a great time. Definitely somewhere I'll be taking more of my friends!

Yelp
Finally, a spot to hangout with friends in union market that ISNT a dive bar. Sid Gold's is exactly what we needed in the neighborhood. It's such a fun atmosphere and you can truly request any song on the piano to sing a long to. It's a great place to come if you and your friends want to try karaoke in a new way!

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in Sid Gold's just to grab a quick drink but we ended up really loving it!! The piano player was excellent and it was so fun watching people request songs and go up for karaoke. Our bartender was really nice and my espresso martini was great! The ambiance was very vibey and I loved all the art on the walls. This would be such a fun place to go with a group of friends. Overall, such a good unexpected experience and I will definitely be back!!

Yelp
LOVED the live piano while belting out karaoke tunes! The place looked amazing and the bar surrounding the piano was a really nice touch! There is a two drink minimum but that wasn't an issue because we'd only planned on staying for an hour-had SO much fun we ended up staying till the very end! Get your requests in early and have a ball!!!!

Yelp
This place could have been a great hangout spot. The ambiance was fine, drinks mediocre, music ok I guess, but my rating comes due to the attitude & demeanor of the staff. We ordered an N.A beer but the bartender gave us a regular one and then dismissed it as not a big deal when pointed out. Our server was extremely rude and actually combative. Not sure what the issue was but one of the servers actually came outside the building to argue and fight my friends. I've never ever seen anything like this. Never going back there again nor will I ever recommend this establishment to anyone ever.

Yelp
This place is so much fun - a cozy neighborhood spot for a fun night with friends - the ones you come in with and the ones you make when you're here. Really nice staff too.

Yelp
Love it!! Such a great addition to Union Market. Great for a night out with friends. The espresso martini is delicious.

Yelp
To start the drinks are basic and overpriced for no specialty cocktails. Not having nothing to put on your stomach while drinking is a bummer and the staff here only cares about taking your money. It has nothing to do with experience. The bar is nothing more but inconsistent. Staff sits around talking instead of checking on guest needs. There is no reason water is not automatically served in a bar with nothing to snack on. The guest who do come in create a beautiful experience of which brings different culture and vibes.

Yelp
Had such a fun night with my group of girlfriends! The pianist was wonderful and the crowd was lively. The drinks were yummy with fast, friendly service. The music was majority live piano karaoke, with a few songs sung by the pianist. There were some really talented singers, which made the night so enjoyable, However, they are very strict about their 2 hour table limit. Will absolutely be back for my next DC trip!
