My partner and I were visited her family as she’s originally from Fort Worth area. We travelled all the way from the UK and stumbled upon this lovely gallery. The lady at the front desk was so so lovely and gave us a fantastic rundown of the artists displayed. She encouraged us to fill out a postcard which they paid for delivery back to the UK which was a nice touch as well. This was my first day/experience of the kind of hospitality that makes me want to move over to Texas. We can’t wait to be back and will definitely pop in again. Thank you to the lady who was in a cast at the time who made us feel so welcome. ☺️

Google
An unexpected surprise while walking down town Fort Worth. The museum is generously FREE and features iconic art and sculptures, particularly from Frederic Remington as Sid Richardson was a prominent collector. The museum is excellently managed with friendly staff and worth a visit even if you are not an art fan.

Google
A small and compact museum of Western Art that still holds quite a bit of character with numerous paintings that carry a wide variety of different emotions. Admissions is free, staff is polite, and the atmosphere is calming as the museum is not overly busy. Equally as interesting is the history of the museum as it was founded by a sort of successful Texan oil executive. A great quick visit!

I did not expect to enjoy this museum, it was great display of western art and some of the drawings told stories of Lewis and Clark expeditions. If you have questions ask the staff they are very friendly and know the art. At the end of my visit I sent postcards which are free of charge. Entry is also free for public. I highly recommend visiting if you are in town. 5 stars!

This was our 2nd time visiting. I wanted to take my parents. We were surprised that the display had changed from before. We found out that they change it every year. They did such a great job. It looks great in there. Janie is so sweet and nice to talk to. You can tell she enjoys being there.

Amazing staff and a wonderful collection to commemorate Sid Richardson’s love for art with his collection

Google
Small museum but a great collection of Remington and Russell works! Bibi was so helpful, telling us all about the artists and even taking the time to look up the answer to a specific question I had about them. We were told that the museum displays about one-third of Richardson’s collection at any given time and rotates pieces every year so it would be worth visiting again. I did notice, as others mentioned, that you could hear the security cameras moving as we walked through the exhibit. I understand the need for security with such valuable artwork, but the noise was a bit distracting from the overall experience and somewhat unnerving. Perhaps some quieter cameras? 😊 All in all, I would highly recommend visiting this museum, and you can’t beat the free admission!

Google
For being a free admission museum, this is one of the best in the area! The staff were extremely welcoming and gave a great history of Sid Richardson and the collection. The museum itself isn't big maybe 3,000 sqft and I would recommend budgeting an hour to really enjoy all the works. There was no wait to enter. The rotating exhibit showed the rich works of Charles Russell and Frederic Remington.

Yelp
This is a small museum, with no more than a couple of rooms of exhibits. However, it is free (they did ask for some personal information to sign in). Upon learning of my non-Texan origins, someone escorted me to an exhibit by someone who had also worked at the National Gallery of Art in DC, a more typical haunt of mine. Some local pride here, I detected. The exhibition promised storytelling, and indeed it delivered an invigorating and complex view of life in the west before the U.S. expanded there. A school tour group was hanging out, allowing me to listen in on a bit of a tour guide talk, but I mostly worked around it to get to a less crowded part of the exhibit. It is easy to work a stop like this into a visit to downtown Fort Worth.

Yelp
I didn't know what to expect stepping into this place, but my expectations were exceeded. I thought it was just some sort of pop-up, as being from out of the area I have no idea who any of these individuals are by name. Growing up just outside of Washington DC, I'm familiar with quality museums like the Smithsonian. This place is not the Smithsonian, it definitely has that classy art feel vibe about it. Not only do they show you the art, but they make you think about it. They talk about the artist. They talk about the story behind the art. Traditionally I am a fan of classic Italian art, American western has always been an interest of mine, but is not something that there is much of in my area of North Carolina. So, this was an opportune visit. The address on the map for yelp was showing the business in the wrong location. It's right in downtown, just off of Main Street. It's worth it to take 30 minutes out of your day, step in, and learn.

Yelp
What an amazing museum!! This is a treasure of Western art. It's a small collection but marvelously presented. Excellent write ups at each piece. And of course the art is wonderful.

Yelp
I have been a fan of the Sid Richardson Museum since first visiting several years ago. Mr. Richardson collected a lot of famous Western art during his life and decided to leave it and this fine small museum for us to enjoy. Thank you, Sir! The museum is located in charming downtown Fort Worth and is free to attend. They also offer free validated parking in a garage 1 block away that is good for 2.5 hours. Plenty of time to come in and enjoy the museum and to get a bite to eat at one of the several nearby restaurants. I recommend budgeting about 30-45 minutes for the museum. Here you will get excellent exposure to original paintings and busts by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell along with other notable artists who together pay homage to Cowboy and Indian life in the 1800's. In regards to Western art created by these geniuses this is as good as it gets. Periodically they will rotate some of the paintings as Mr. Richardsons' collection is larger than what this facility can display at one time. While this is one of my favorite museums to visit I was saddened to learn from my visit last week that their gift shop closed due to the pandemic and will not reopen. Usually museum gift shops are something to put up with when visiting but not this one. It was a high class business that sold reproductions of many of the pieces displayed in the museum along with other western themed items. Over the years I purchased three items from them so I know. To be honest, I enjoyed visiting the gift shop as much as I did the museum. The Sid Richardson Museum is well worth your time when visiting the DFW area to see masterpieces of the Old West. Oh and remember, it's free!

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Free admission to see some great depictions of Western art. You will have to keep in mind the period the art was created in as some of the titles and depictions of Native American culture will be outdated by today's social acceptance. The museum was made possible by a wealthy oil man and is free to the public. Staff inside are welcoming and friendly. It is small, but worth the time if you enjoy viewing art.

Yelp
This was a very fun museum to stumble across. I was staying downtown and walking around and came across this gem. I am a museum study major so I was geeked to see this collection. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly upon entering. I do not like when I feel watched in museums it just takes away from the experience They do let you know standard stuff like no flash, and don't stand close and no touching but after that they let you go explore and walk and see all the art yourself.

Yelp
If you have a few minutes to spare make a reservation to see the gallery at the Sid Richardson museum. The docents are extremely knowledgeable, nice, kind and welcoming. The gallery includes work from Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. In addition, there are western artifacts of historical Ft Worth significance on display,

nancy m.

Yelp
Stopped in while waiting for our dinner reservation. Not crowded at all! Very informative staff, interesting history and art

Pearl B.

Yelp
We rode the train to Ft Worth for the experience, and we were looking on Yelp for ideas of things to see that were within walking distance of the train station. We had a lovely time at the Sid Richardson Museum as we both like western art. The staff were welcoming and the museum was a good choice for our trip.

Thomas R.

Yelp
An art critic I am not, and I know almost nothing about art, but I do know when I like it. I can tell you that I do the like art of Frederic Remington that is on display at the Sid Richardson Museum. One unforgettable canvas of Remington's is especially haunting: A Taint On The Wind. The canvas depicts two coachmen driving six horses at night through a western mountain pass. The only light comes from the moon, faint stars, and two lanterns suspended on either side of the coach. As the horses pull the four-wheeled carriage through the darkness of night, one horse at the front of the team is spooked by something on the road and rears up suddenly, mid-gallop. This shock causes a chain reaction, sending other horses rearing up as well, reacting at different times, and the snapshot of the moment is mesmerizing in the same way that a train wreck is. You don't want to see what happens next, but you can't make yourself look away, either. Neither could I stop looking at this painting. I am infatuated with this work now. Many thanks to the Sid Richardson Museum for turning me on to the genius that is Frederic Remington and my new favorite work of cowboy art. Admission to the museum is free, and the gift shop has some cute'n'artsy things for sale. The place is air-conditioned, so you can cool off and take in some great western art, too.

Eric W.

Yelp
I'll be honest in that I was not aware of this museum. After lunch at Uno and before our play at the Jubilee Theatre started, my father headed us over to the Sid Richardson Museum. The museum is free, so there is no reason not to take a peek. Upon entering, the first thing you see is the gift shop, and there are some very nice gift ideas here. Also worth noting is that the prices are very reasonable. If you are looking for a Texas themed gift (as Celeste A. said, "tasteful not kitschy Texas souvenirs"), for the young or old, the Sid Richardson Museum would be a good place to look. Even if you don't fancy western art, I do think many will appreciate the artistry. I was particularly impressed by the works of Remington. I had never seen a black and white oil painting before, and I found myself staring at this one painting for quite a while. The longer I looked, the more color I saw, and I realized a very subtle and limited amount of color was used. I believe the name of the painting was "The Courrier du Bois and the Savage". Several works by Russel were also on display. I found myself staring at these too for the opposite reason I had with the B&W Remington, color. Russel's "When White Men Turn Red" was mesmerizing. It also turns out that it is the only example in the Sid Richardson Collection of Russell's later work in oils. The yellow in this painting made it seem back-lit. I'll definitely bee keeping this museum on my short list of things to see and do in downtown Fort Worth.

Allen B.

Yelp
Amazing collection. What a gem. For now, you have to reserve a spot in advance but it is well worth a visit. The remingtons and Russell's are incredible. Allow :45 minutes.

Kevin W.

Yelp
This is a free admission museum that is cozy. The museum consist of a small gift shop, and 2 exhibit halls. The oil paintings are spectacular but you will spend less than an hour in this location. The gift shop is a great place to buy postcards and some unique items.

Wacomac M.

Yelp
This is a great museum with wonderful collections of Frederick Remington and Charley Russel. It's a small collection, so one can see it on a lunch hour, or site seeing in Fort Worth. The little gift shop has some very unique items. The staff is very helpful and willing to take time to show you around. Plus, they will validate your Sundance Square parking! Truly, worth a stop and look.

Yelp
I'm not sure how qualified I am to review an art museum considering I had never been to one before. This museum contains art by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russel. Their art mainly consists of American West oil paintings. The major selling point to this Museum is that there is no required sale. The museum is 100% free to spectate and you also get a guide explaining every individual piece of artwork. The art featured in this museum is very interesting and is a nice break from modern art with most art dating from late 1800s to early 1900s. We were immediately greeted when we came in through the gift shop entrance. The lady took a few moments from her time to give us a brief overview of what we would see in the displays. The area was very clean and sanitary. The only complaint I have about the museum is it only took about 15-20 to get through the whole place, which is expected from a museum only featuring two artists. This museum is completely free and I would HIGHLY recommend stopping in to check it out. Some of the art truly is gorgeous.

Charlotte J.

Yelp
What a gem of a museum! Tucked away on a side street right off of Sundance Square, you might walk right past this little glass storefront if you weren't looking for it. But through their doors you'll find a delightful little gallery, two rooms at the most, that showcases the art of two Western artists, Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. The gallery is entirely free, and as you enter you are greeted by a friendly docent passing out thick booklets full of fascinating information about each painting. The museum is small, but you could spend hours there studying each painting and learning about it from that book. Photographs are encouraged, and they even have a sort of painting caption contest that they run through their social media. When you're finished perusing the paintings, you can spend some time in their lovely gift shop, which is filled with great Texas-themed souvenirs. Definitely worth a trip when you're visiting Fort Worth!

Jen L.

Yelp
As I wandered the streets of downtown Ft. Worth during my only day to actually relax while I was there, I happened by this small museum & gift shop. This is a great, but small collection of western art all collected by one individual, Sid Richardson. The paintings and sculpture were a remarkable cross section of Western art. It takes less than an hour to see everything and that's if you stop and study each item *and* peruse the gift shop. The staff was really nice and the security guard was forced to dress as if he was old school sheriff (which I found really funny and I regret that I didn't snap his photo). Definitely worth a peruse and, yep, it's free!

Lori H.

Yelp
We really enjoyed this little art gallery. The paintings were perfect for Fort Worth - cowboys and indians.

Yelp
This is a five star museum (gallery?) and we had a 5 star experience. A small space but there is just enough to satisfy you. Comfortable, clean and welcoming. Wonderful paintings and enough background to inform the curious. Even the gift shop was nice - not all super fancy stuff either (a good mix). The person behind the desk was incredibly warm and helpful. And it's free! Can't recommend enough. My lack of five stars is because of something I witnessed the security guard say/do to another patron. A young African American male came in alone and was asked to check his backpack. The friendly and helpful person behind the counter was courteous and professional. As was the roaming guard. But there was another guard (older, white male, sitting on a stool) that jumped up as soon as he saw this young black man enter the museum. He firmly asked the young man to pull up his pants and then whispered to the rest of the staff "we have a dress code". That was the end of the interaction. Perhaps I am overreacting but this seemed entirely unnecessary and served as to remind a young person who didn't "fit the mold" of the other patrons that he simply did not belong there. My observation was that this young person was singled out, perhaps based on how he was dressed, perhaps based on race. Let's not be naive, it was probably both. My museum experience would have been no different and certainly no worse if this young man was dressed how he liked and treated like the rest of us.

Stephen L.

Yelp
Cute museum with friendly staff and a nice selection of paintings and other artwork. It is a relatively small collection when compared to other Fort Worth museums, but it has free admission and is very conveniently located downtown. I think it's a bit tough for the little ones to really enjoy, due to lack of interaction. But it's a great stop to see some western art.

Celeste A.

Yelp
If you like Western art, pop in here for a free look around. Yes I said FREE. Go in the door, grab your free gallery guide and go look at lots of Charles Russell and Frederic Remington paintings. The museum also has a nice gift shop of postcards and other tasteful not kitschy Texas souvenirs. its open until 8 PM on Fri and Sat so if you need a place to take your date for a walk after your happy hour cocktail at Sundance Square, there ya go. Walk here, walk around, enjoy the air conditioning and did I mention its FREE... free. I love free. http://www.sidrichardsonmuseum.org/nu_site/sid_richardson_museum.php/museum/highlights/

Yelp
I've lived in downtown Fort Worth for about two years and just recently have discovered that this is a Museum and not a local store. First time I visited this museums was for a Wild West Trivia Night invited thru a friend. It was such an awesome event. Got learn a lot for Texas and Fort Worth History. I have only good things to say about the event. Can't wait for the next one. Before the trivia started we walked thru the exhibit on the museum. There are works of art from western treasure by Charles M. Russell, Frederic Remington also there you can see collection of bronze sculpture by the same artists. The museum is free. I highly recommend this beautiful place, you can only benefit from it.

Christopher B.

Yelp
I really enjoyed looking at all of the artwork inside the museum/gallery. Cool little detour.

Kayla M.

Yelp
A small, albeit interesting museum. We loved that it was free and right next to Sundance Square. The women working in the museum were so incredibly nice and friendly too. The Wild West paintings add to any Fort Worth visit.

Gladys S.

Yelp
I went there today. Very nice people work there. Artwork is interesting and free to observe along with a free guide to describe each piece of western art. It has a cute gift shop in the front too.

Jeff B.

Yelp
The other reviews do a nice description of this not-so-hidden gem in the center of downtown and Sundance Square. But let's summarize... Cost? FREE Priceless Works of Art? Check Helpful Staff? On-site and Readily Available Oh, and the gift shop is a delight and there's plenty of reasonable items to take home as keepsakes for out-of-town visitors, or great reminders of this excellent museum for locals. I could talk about the impact Remington and Russell have had on the world of Western Art, and the importance of the specific pieces they have on-site here, but I'll let you discover that for yourself. This is a DON'T MISS if you're in Fort Worth.

Andrew W.

Yelp
Worth the visit. Excellent Remington and Russell paintings. Amon Carter Museum for the bronzes, Richardson for the paintings.

R S.

Yelp
I Like Amon Carter....This place for Remington and Russell is the bomb. The focus is on these two and the guidebook helps direct you along the history of these fine artists. Congenial staff and excellent facility. It is a narrow focus but allows one to steep in the artists ways. Western art at its best. Thank you Sid Richardson for the fore sight to share this venue.

Ranel C.

Yelp
What a cool little place. The entrance is free so there was no reason for me not to go in. But I did not expect to see what I saw, dozens of pieces of art of the old west. Amazingly beautiful. The kinds of pieces that really touch you. It included all aspects of western life, from the peaceful to the violent. The gift shop is also a great place to buy some souvenirs. A great place, which I highly recommend.

Monty G.

Yelp
What a cheap (free) way to introduce someone to western art by its two greatest masters! Great to spend 30-90minutes getting a bit of western culture while at downtown Fort Worth. So glad we checked it out.

James S.

Yelp
I really liked this museum! Very intimate setting and had such an impressive collection of Frederick Remington paintings as well as bronze statues. You will not find an experience like this anywhere for a museum of the same size!!

Kelly H.

Yelp
Amazing little museum in Sundance Square. Admission was free and the Museum was packed with Remingtons and Russells.
