These Ann Arbor Restaurants Offer Unique Burgers | Eater Detroit

We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the vibes of Sidetrack really fit depot town. They have a lot of really cool details when you look around and they do a great job decorating for Holidays. The service is always pretty great and the waitstaff is very nice and polite and gives the right amount of attention to the tables. When asked they give great recommendations on their menu. They have great “bar food” , all of the burgers are on their menu are amazing. Many of the appetizers they have are delicious. For a starter we got the Mac eggrolls and they were incredible. Highly recommend! This time we got the Portobello burger, Salmon, and the Mac n Cheese. Everything was good. The salmon could have had a tad bit more of seasoning but was cooked incredibly well. The Mac and cheese was good and the penne noodles make it very interesting. Overall, we love coming to eat here when we go to Ypsilanti and would recommend.

Google
My son from Detroit recommended going to Ypsilanti and walking the area. We decided to eat at the Sidetrack Bar and Grill, and I am glad we did. Rich in decorations and just a classic place to hang out, have a beer and eat a good meal. Great service from start to finish. I had the sliders which were amazing. Our party of 5 enjoyed all our food and we were well taken care of. For dessert, we had the bread pudding, very tasty. If you are touring Ypsilanti and are hungry or thirsty, stop in and enjoy the Sidetrack Bar and Grill.

Google
The food was AMAZING. Super delicious!!! I got a Mac and cheese and chili bowl and my dad got a Louisiana fish sandwich and chili bowl. We both agreed that this was a five star restaurant. Decent prices too. Our Server Jessica K. was so nice and professional as well. She was prompt with service too. Thank you very much Jessica and Sidetrack bar and grill! I’ll be recommending your restaurants to all my friends and I’ll be back soon too 🥰

Google
Don't hesitate to go here! Fantastic food, fantastic atmosphere! You can eat on beautiful patios or in a historic bar. The food prices are low and you get a large portion. The desserts are amazing!

Google
Beat happy hour in Ypsi! They have great beer deals where you can buy 27oz of two hearted for cheap! They also give you cheaper egg rolls, I highly recommend the Big Mac egg rolls. A good vibe and friendly but not overbearing staff.

Google
This place has some cool decorations and it has been there for a long time. I think they are mostly good with sandwiches. I ordered the Ypsilanti Hash and the eggs were overcooked, a few tiny little pieces of beef and a mountain of potatoes. I got a stomachache the rest of the day. The table was not wiped and had crumbs all over it. The whole place didn't seem very clean. We tried the Reuben egg rolls and they were very good! The place was pretty crowded and they serve huge beers for not much,

Google
Been going there since the mid 2010's hadn't been there in a few years since I moved from Ypsilanti, I went to the Beer Fest at Frog Island and took some friends here after. Everything was as good as I remembered. When they are busy it can take a little time to get your food but the drinks come quick and the atmosphere is perfect for drinking and talking.

Google
This is a cool place. It is a hike from my house away. I come a couple times a year but every time we come, the food is good and the service. If you’re lucky and have a sit by the window sometimes the train will go blowing by you. It is a very cozy atmosphere.

Yelp
Updating my review to a four over the three I previously posted. My last few times visiting Sidetrack were more pleasant than my first few times. Their club sandwich is really good, and their beer menu is OK. Service has also been better here my last few visits. Even while busy they can keep up.

Yelp
Went to hang out with friends after going to a little art show. I do want to say the food was OK. The service is pretty good. I had a server named Danny . He was fast and efficient, and he was honest and funny about everything! food came out fast but it wasn't really hot. I do have to say the fried zucchini was amazing . The burgers were pretty good. The mac & cheese was mid.

Yelp
I have been to this place several times and really enjoy it. They have a great happy hour with 27 ounce drafts for $3.50. For an appetizer, we tried the pizza rolls which were pizza roll in an eggroll and it was super good for dinner. I got a steak and cheese sandwich. I thought it was OK but my husband loved it. We also tried the salmon and rice, which was very good as well. Our server was great and we will be back again.

Yelp
I told Ariel, (waitress) the last time I was at the Sidetrack I had a burger and potato footprints. But they were not on the menu. The last time I was there was 1981! We laughed, she said she hadn't heard of them. A few minutes later she came out with an order of footprints and the manager. He thought they were a great idea. Maybe they will put them on the menu. Friendly service, great atmosphere super good food. The hod fudge brownie was unbelievable!!

Yelp
I'm from Grand Rapids, a local friend wanted to take me here. The burger was sooo good! The fries fantastic, the pickles hello did you see that batter? I had left overs which I'm hoping my air fryer cooks well! My friend said the bean soup was amazing as she has had in the past. I would go back. I mean how can you go wrong with homemade pickles and a seeded hamburger bun?!

Yelp
The food is always great service lacks a little at times. try the thanksgiving Turkey burgers you will not be disappointed

Yelp
We sat at the bar grabbed mock tails and dinner. It has been awhile since we have stopped in and we are glad we did. There was a wait when we got there at 7 which was fine and was moving fast. We jumped to the bar to eat dinner instead, it looked like they will a little short handed on staff but that made no difference, food was amazing, staff was friendly and we had a great time! We will definitely not wait so long next time! Fyi my favorite burger in town!

Yelp
Fun atmosphere, historic surroundings and a good burger. Who could ask for more! Great service and interesting interior.

Yelp
I love this place, the staff is very attentive and quick to get food out. They treat me like family every visit and the ambience is cool. This place is full of history and roomy, it's old so it is a little dusty and got some were and tear some places but it's very well maintained for how old it is. Can be kinda hectic during rush hour. But how I see this place is a way better fancier Applebee's with better food. My go to are any of there awesome egg rolls there are 4 very unique egg rolls with there own dipping sauces. And the stuffed mushrooms are massive! And delicious. the breading is perfect and not to salty. Also a cool area in town for a perfect date night. Next time I have to try a burger because I've heard that's what they are known for Give them a try you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
There was a little bit of a wait, and the host advised that they were running a bit behind, which was ok with us! We ordered chips and queso to start and it was really tasty! I then had the club and fries and it's among the best i've ever had. The bread was perfectly toasted and the meats were fresh and stacked high! My partner ordered a double cheeseburger and it was just as delicious. The meat had that wonderful grilled smell, and was cooked to a medium perfection. Our server was very busy but still gave us exceptional service. I loved everything about this historical place!

Todd W.

Yelp
I don't care what you order. the food is always good, hot and fresh. The weight staff is very friendly and the location is great.

Yelp
Longtime (like decades) of being a customer here. Last night was made so much fun by our waitress Melanie(sp?). The food and atmosphere was great but it always is. Always recommend!

Yelp
After reading about the history behind "Sidetrack", it makes the experience much better. The food was delicious and I highly recommend the tap root beer if you're into that, much better than IBC. the burgers are out of this world and our server was the nicest young lady ever. 10/10 would recommend, especially if you like enjoy history
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
The service is the best part of Sidecar. The food is mediocre, it's not very clean and the soda / water all taste like their pipes need to be cleaned. If they cut the menu and the footprint of the restaurant in 1/2 and hired professional cleaners then it could be salvaged.
google avatar

Yelp
St. Patrick's Day! Tasty specials, discount pints and appetizers, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Egg Rolls, Clams, Fish n Chips!

E. Ann B.

Yelp
Service is good and I like the atmosphere I've been here a few times and both times something is not quite right Last time I had the stuffed salmon Rice pilaf came with it not so good- Old and tasteless. They forgot to bring a refill on soda for someone in our party. I did get a stomach ache later on so pretty sure it was the dinner since that was the last thing I had for the day. Each time I'm here something is wrong with the plate and the rest is just okay. I want to like it more but it's never excellent.

Yelp
Sidetrack is a great spot to grab some pub food in historic Depot Town, Ypsilanti. We love the fresh cut fries- always delicious. I gave the gazpacho a try - a special soup of the day. It was yummy!! I will definitely order it again if offered. The salads are fresh & one of my go-to dishes. The balsamic vinaigrette is always my choice. The sliders are always a good option. They have brunch specials on Sunday, along with an amazing over the top Bloody Mary bar. They also offer mimosas with $1 refills. I always want a dessert from here, but I am always so full. Give Sidetrack a try if you are in Ypsilanti!
google avatar

Yelp
Great service, cool atmosphere and definitely a place where locals go (and have been coming to for decades) so it's a really hip but comfortable vibe. Big selection of bourbons so that was fun. Typical bar/beer choices. The food is decent. One stand kit is the fried mushrooms!! What a great surprise. It's hard to find them on menus nowadays and these were huge and juicy ones. You want a cool hangout? This is the place.

Yelp
Sidetrack is pet-friendly, which made us happy as we don't have many pet-friendly places in our hometown. We brought our two dogs and were seated outside. They even have a dog-specific menu! Rather than order individual entrees, we split a few appetizers - pretzel bites, fried clams, and Reuben egg rolls. All three were delicious - I especially loved the beer cheese dipping sauce for the pretzel bites. We got a "pup plate" and the dogs split a rice, gravy, and burger lunch. They were really excited and happy to be there. There were yellow jackets swarming all over the patio - it really ruined our experience. I was stung on the hand. The staff did their absolute best to try and fix it - they poured some nectar far away from the tables, and they brought me an ice pack after I was stung, but if you're going to have an outdoor patio full of flowers, you should do more to make sure there aren't hives nearby. Or find a way to seat people inside or away from the wasps, even if we have dogs with us. I would return to Sidetrack, but probably not in late summer when this insect problem is at its peak.

Yelp
Service and food is consistently good. Fun place to go. Crowd is mixture of ages, etc.

Yelp
I had to update my review. I held my baby shower here in November and it was AMAZING!! The staff were so accommodating and wonderful, helpful and personable. The food was good as usual (they made us custom menus for the party that included a kids menu). Loved the way I was able to decorate, it looked great and accommodated 40 people. Cost wise, you are paying for the meals and drinks by the headcount, with automatic gratuity. It is a cost effective way to throw a medium size party, since it cuts cost of catering and location -while also saving your time on cleanup. Highly recommend for your celebrations, it has great natural lighting and cool retro vibes. Wouldn't recommend a party size much bigger than what I had, as we filled the space.

Yelp
First time in Ypsilanti so I was interested in checking out the cool restaurants. But it was early in the day so a lot of places were closed, so I stumbled upon Sidetrack. My server, Jennifer W, was so sweet and patient the drinks were strong and delicious. The fried pickles? Top notch with the best ranch. But the Reuben? Omggggggg phenomenal!! It had the best corned beef and was just heavenly. The chips that came on the side were tasty and definitely looked more appealing than their fries, in my opinion. Will be back when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Ambience is aplenty with curios and old / new ads on the wall as well as pertinent historic information. Front and back entrance with two parking lots behind it that you can park and don't pay for. Waitress was prompt efficient. Food came out fast. Extensive beer menu and you can get a "snobby" shot of bourbon from weller antique. My significant got a stout that you could eat with a fork and I had the Elvis juice. I ordered the tall. That's 27 oz of beer folks in a glass that you can literally curl for a weight. Work out as you drink- great concept. The mushrooms were tasty and filling- good amount for their size. The chicken noodle soup of the day had great flavor and strangely not very hot. Companion had the shepherds pie and nothing left on the plate. The vegan tacos were more plentiful than expected. They were good and probably would not order them again. The side sauce gave them more zip but not a lot of flavor in the taco itself. Cute place - good service and near all the shops on Cross- which was fun also!

Yelp
Stopped here on the way from the Detroit airport to South Bend. So glad we stopped. Service was friendly. Outdoor seating and for that matter indoor seating was huge. Wish I liked bloody Mary's as they had an amazing bar just for that. My son had the black bean burger, I had the turkey burger and my husband had the blackened chicken Caesar. Everything was fresh and customizable. We started with the fried pickles which was huge. The beer menu had 30+ to choose from. Only negative was the fries. They were undercooked and didn't come out with seasoning as ordered. The waitress remedied that by bringing out seasoning.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and hoping to make a return! Came here on a rather busy night but were sat right away and service was fantastic! I really appreciated the large beer list, and so many local ones too! Definitely a good place for brews, I should come during a Michigan game! All the burgers looked so good, but I went with the black bean burger and it was really fantastic! Really well cooked and perfect with cheddar cheese. The patty was seasoned so well and I'm glad I went vegetarian. My partner went with a standard cheeseburger and liked it a lot. Fries were great and they were ready with plenty of hot sauce!

Yelp
I've never been here before but I know people really love it here. I ordered the Hobo sandwich with fries. My friend and I split onion rings. We both wish the onion rings were crispier. I enjoyed my sandwich but the bun that it came on wasn't my favorite (it was too soft). I also wish the fries were crispier! Overall, I had a good experience but the food could have been crispier (I genuinely like crispier food).

Yelp
On a recent trip back to Toledo from Lansing my wife found this spot on Google and we were not disappointed. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman that sat us immediately. We were greeted by our server, Annie, with a pleasant greeting and smile . We explained to her it was our first time here and asked her for any recommendations. She went over several items. We ordered drinks and upon her return we took her up on the Spinach Artichoke Dip she had suggested. Served with plenty of chips the dip was full of flavor and was baked to a perfect temperature. For our entrees my wife went with the BBQ Slaw Burger. A burger topped with a generous helping of pulled pork. It was served with a heaping pile of sweet potato fries. Cooked to perfection my wife thoroughly enjoyed it( she took half home too much spinach dip lol) I ordered the Philly of the special menu(another recommendation feom Annie) this sandwich was served with big thick cut fries. This sandwich was loaded with shaved beef, peppers and onions. It was tremendous. The inside of the restaurant was decked out with railroad memorabilia and had a fire going in the giant fireplace. We will be returning in the near future. If in the area and looking for a great place to eat with outstanding service I would highly recommend Sidetracks.

Yelp
First time attending this bar and I was completely blown away. The service was amazing, very kind and helpful. Happy Hour was amazing food and drinks both great!!!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Absolutely great meal!! The food was high quality and delicious! The staff were very friendly and attentive. The prices are very fair and you get a lot of food. My only complaint would be the size of the cocktails. They were tasty and at $8 a piece could have been bigger.
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
First time visit based on recommendations of others. I was not impressed with my food which is the reason I go to restaurants. I ordered the French Dip Sliders which sounded promising but in fact the roast beef was overcooked, dry and had hard burnt edges all around. Really was not very palatable at all. I ate one and left the other 2. Fries were pretty decent but also pretty greasy. Waiter was friendly and nice stayed on top of things. Since I was passing through the area I don't see myself returning and if I do return to that area I certainly won't eat here again.
google avatar

Kristen D.

Yelp
Food was great as was drinks. Pretty cool atmosphere, old bar area really cool! Service seemed a little slow, but take that as you will from a fast paced New Englander!
google avatar

Yelp
Sidetrack is a great place to get a group of friends together -- my last visit was in June 2021 and it was fantastic that they had a ton of options for seating (indoor, outdoor patio, fully outdoor). On the menu you'll find what you'd usually expect from a standard Bar & Grill style restaurant, and there's a solid selection of drinks as well. As of my last visit, they were enforcing a 2 hour limit on patio tables, but it's reasonable given the current demand for outdoor seating (and the covered patio was absolutely helpful when a spontaneous downpour decided to visit us). The restaurant also offers quick cash out with a handheld kiosk right at your seat, and that makes things super simple when you've got a decent sized group. Overall I'd say Sidetrack is absolutely worth a visit, and makes a great Depot town hangout, especially as we're coming out of pandemic times.

Yelp
Food was delicious service was great the scenery is amazing the waitress was so nice overall I had a amazing time

Yelp
Just visited based on my son's recommendation. Inside has a cool eclectic/rustic 1940s feel. I had the Amtrak Double Decker Cheeseburger and added French Fries. The burger came with 3 pieces of cheese of your choice. They have 11 varieties of cheese! The fries are fresh hand cut and were incredible. The burger was cooked to order perfectly. Everyone enjoyed their meal as well. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Radhika R.

Yelp
This is a very intriguing place. It is in the hip Depot town, amidst many other cool places. The ambiance is a little like an old fashioned saloon, but with numerous modern decor twists. The Amtrack rushes by every so often, which is exciting to see. The menu is very eclectic, and I believe there is something for everyone. How serendipitous for me, tonight all wine was half off! I started with the sauv blanc from cupcake, then had the lentil burger with the most indulgent, thick cut fries. My date had the salmon, which was served with wild rice and grilled asparagus. His lo beer was fabulous, as well. Bonus points to him for suggesting this spot. I suspect that we will return.

Yelp
Wednesday wine day is the best. There club sandwiches are to die for and the strawberry shortcake is unbelievable! When I come back to Ypsilanti it's always on the list.

Yelp
Horrible place if you want to eat healthy but great staff and cool space when it's not packed

Jessica S.

Yelp
We enjoyed a Friday lunch! Our waitress was professional quick and family oriented. Food was delicious. Restaurant was clean and even bathrooms were well taken care of. When in town we will have to make this a stop for the family. Wish I would have remembered our waitress name she made our experience just a good time overall. Be back soon! Also the menu has an option for everyone.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
Went here for dinner last night and I got their strawberry and chicken salad. It was very tasty! Unfortunately, we ran into a situation with another business, but the owner, Jessica, went above and beyond to try to solve the issue. Definitely recommend giving this place your business. It was busy, but that just to go to show it is a good spot!

Yelp
My husband and I came in on a Thursday evening and were glad to get a table with no wait AND on the patio!! Wooo! I was trying to get a feel for what to order but our waitress was new and wasn't super sure. I ended up with the pulled pork sliders and was very disappointed. I will not order those again. I tried my husbands ham and Swiss sandwich on a pretzel bun, and WOW, let me tell you, this is what you should order. I was thankful he shared his with me and I ditched my sliders. I love this place and we will be back, the menu is just so extensive it's hard to pick what to get!
google avatar

Chloe M.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere but tables are too close together. Great beer list and good food however, the place is FILTHY. Dirty bathrooms, dirty floor, and a beer vendor told me the basement where beer is kept is always dirty and smells like sewage. Attracts a very hipster crowd. Outdoor patio seating available. Bar area is small and in front of the main door. Friends have told me management/owners are rude to their staff and don't treat them well.

Yelp
This staple of Depotown has been a favorite for years. We would come her for after work gatherings and celebratory birthday luncheons. All the St. Joes crowd came here. I have not been getting much carry out during this time of COVID, but had a hankering I could not stop. So we ordered carryout. Although I am a huge fan of the Georgia Ruben, I didn't think it would carry out as well as a burger. We got a plain, medium rare famous hand crafted burger with fries. I wanted a burger, but wanted all the accouterments that came on the gourmet hand crafted mini burgers (blue cheese, grilled onions and bacon) and the sweet potato fries. Mistakes were made, and neither of us received what we ordered. I tried to call right away, but with businesses the way they are during COVID, the restaurant was closed at 8 PM. So it was not until a day later that I reached someone. The woman manning the phone carry out orders immediately put me in touch with Tammy, the manager. She made it right. Not just in replacing my order, but addressing how to fix future issues. And by listening to me. And I have to say the mini gourmet burgers were awesome. Really Really GOOD! There was lots of blue cheese (don't you hate when you cannot taste the blue cheese - since if you wanted a mild cheese, you would have ordered American). There were plenty of onions and it was really delectable. Thank you Tammy for taking the responsibility to bring the delivery to my car yourself. And, fully outfitted in protective gear. gloves and a mask. Way to go!

Yelp
We want to compliment Sidetrack for having 'John' as a server as a staff member. I left my expensive mobile phone there after drinking one of their delicious amber ales and enjoying an even more delicious burger. When I realized at midnight that my phone was missing, panic ensued. But when I returned to Sidetrack in the morning, there was John cleaning tables whilst preparing for the new day. He immediately recognized me and went to retrieve my lost phone. 'Here it is!' were the most welcome words I have heard in a long time. Congratulations to Sidetrack for having such honest employees!

Amy P.

Yelp
An hour without service, we went to find it twice. Carryout did not include paid-for sides.

Yelp
Love burgers? ‍ Love mac & cheese? ‍‍ You need to try the amazing Mac Attack burger @sidetrack1 in Ypsi. Tasty burger topped with crispy bacon, mac & cheese & a little bit of BBQ sauce. Phenomenal combination!!! Served with Cajun fries. Casual atmosphere with gorgeous bar. Love the vibe. It's especially cool when a train goes by - you can feel the vibration (we saw 2). Wish our server was a bit more attentive. Had to ask for basics like more water.
google avatar

Regina A.

Yelp
Classic bar ambiance with historical tidbits in the decor, right next to the train tracks. The food is great. I love the cheeseburger egg rolls and Harvest Sliders made with ground turkey, mashed red potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and sweet potato fries. The service has always been laid back. A place to eat as a local!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
This is a must visit if you are in the area!! They have excellent food and beverages along with great drink specials and great Happy Hour. Great Burgers, Ribs etc... Service is awesome assuming you get a good server which is about 87% of the time. Can't beat the ambiance. Trains are almost for sure to go by during your visit especially the Amtrac going about 50 MPH.... CHEERS!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is hit or miss with whether Their food is good or not. Whenever I order takeout, it's absolutely horrible. However the food is usually good. If I eat inside the restaurant, their fried pickles are classic and I recommend them to everybody.

Yelp
Take Applebee's and make it better. That is Sidetrack. Very American-style bar and grill, but it does it very well.
