Sideways BBQ

Fully enjoyed my experience dining on the patio at Sidways. I was immediately greeted and told to sit anywhere I'd like. I opted for a shaded seat outside so I could enjoy the perfect weather and great harbor view. The country music was an amazing bonus. I had a chopped brisket sandwich. It came dry with an onion, pepper and pickle and my choice of BBQ sauce from the table. I liked building it my way. Really enjoyed the sandwich (espcially the bun and the spicy BBQ sauce). Service was great as well. I'd absolutely go back.

Fun place of the lake. Live music a huge plus. Green beans were tasty as was the burger. Staff was friendly and attentive. Recommend

Some of the best food that we have had in awhile! The fried okra was perfect! Brisket fries were on point, perfect amount of cheese and meat to the fries. Pulled pork sandwich was a great amount of meat with little to no fat. The hot BBQ sauce went great with all of it as well! They also do Military discount.

Some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had! The ribs were delicious — different but really tasty — and the mac and cheese was one of my all-time favorites. Our waiter, Ryder, was awesome and super friendly. I’m really happy we found this spot — great BBQ, great service, and a nice lake view. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re near Rockwall or driving through.

Me and my family (Party of about 10-15 people) came in for a birthday dinner. The waitress we had was GREAT, I forgot her name.. The food was okay. I ordered the brisket which mostly was just pieces of fat. The biggest concern is that they have chairs that are LITERALLY hot glued together and my daughter fell right out of hers and hit her head pretty hard. Luckily, she was okay when we got her checked out. Spoke to Lexi, who was the manager on duty. Didn't have anything against her but she didn't have the best attitude. Tried to defend the restaurant by saying the chair was welded together when there is clearly what looks like hot glue around the part that collapsed. The owner tried to reach out to me today while I was at work so I was not able to answer and when I tried to call back calls will not go through.

I'm not typically a "bar environment" type of person but was pleasantly surprised by the food and service. Mandi was our bar tender and she just made my afternoon! She was so sweet, made sure my drink was just the way I like it, and offered menu suggestions for us to try. She made our rainy afternoon very enjoyable. We're very introverted and don't tend to like loud environments, but she had such a kind and soft personality, she made us feel very comfortable.

Afternoon date at the Harbor in Rockwall Texas . Lunch after church and a movie. Found a restaurant we had not been too called Sideways. Chose to sit outdoors but other tables from other restaurant were in front and the lake view was not fully a lake view , but service was excellent! the brisket sandwich was amazing as well as the ribs were delicious. We hadn’t had good bbq in a long time . Happy we chose this spot. Definitely will come again. The music was loud from the other restaurant but could still talk .

So glad we came across this BBQ restaurant. The food is delicious and the drinks are great. We were there during karaoke night and it was a lot of fun!

I've been meaning to try Sideways for over a year! This was a recommendation from another DFW Yelp Elite member when I was new to the area. Ambiance: Finally made it over to Rockwall to check this place out. The restaurant is very much the rustic, country, vibe! They were blasting 90s and current country songs. As we were leaving (around 7:30 PM on a Saturday), the performers for the live band began setting up! Looks like a good place to enjoy some BBQ, and live (country(?)) music. The outdoor patio is pretty large, and they have a corn hole area as well. Service: The service was friendly, but slow. The food came out slow, but it's probably due to the crazy amount of people out that day (beautiful spring day, and prom weekend). Food: We ordered the following dishes to share between the 2 of us 1) sideways belly cheater/Fried Pork Rib (3/5: would pass on this! Came out dry) 2) Smoked Bacon Wrapped Pimento Cheese Stuffed Jalapenos (5/5: this was amazing!! Deff need a good run after this to open up my Cardiovascular system again!) 3) sliced brisket (4/5: so tender, so juicy, melts right in your mouth) 4) smoked turkey (3.5/5: very flavorful. Wish it wasn't as dry) 5) Jalapeño sausage with cheddar cheese (3.5/4: good, but wish the jalapeño had a kick) Overall, we had a really good time at Sideways enjoying BBQ and a little people watching on the patio! NOTE: the patio tables definitely need to be refinished (the lacquer disintegrated). Be careful or you might get a splinter or 2!

Ok. After trying to get service across the way at Brass Tap for over 20 min. Left and went across the way to here. Same thing. Despite telling the bartender what we experienced at Brass Tap we ended up having to self service at the bar here. Where we met Jordan. Despite multiple waitress's on the patio. Again think we were invisible seriously. But finally the bartender realized we still hadn't had a waitress come by after 20 min she came out of the bar and took our order herself. The only bright spot here. Thanks Jordan!! To the management here. Fire the patio help and hire more like Jordan. Ps post Review. Over 30 min and still waiting for our food. OMG. Can't make this up. So so bad.

Driving on the way to Austin (from Memphis TN), stopped by Sideways BBQ in Rockwall as it was one of the few BBQ joints open late on Christmas Eve. Called up, kitchen was about to close but the lady I spoke to was nice enough to take my order in advance. I ordered. 1/2 lb of brisket (lean meat so less fat) and the 1/2 lb of seasoned pork ribs. Arrived for pickup, requested one of each type of BBQ sauce, and made payment. We ate food inside the car as we had brought our dog and it was too cold/windy to eat outside. Brisket was decent, but pretty good. Came with a Mac and cheese side and that was decent too. House sauces were likewise ok, but I liked the spicy one slightly more. Seasoned pork ribs were definitely the best of the lot. We actually devoured that completely, and it got over first. I would rate the ribs itself as "A-" as it was pretty great. Also authentic Texan BBQ and meat, which is solid. All in all, would recommend this spot and honestly for the pork ribs I'd recommend getting 1 lb especially if expecting to share it w/ others.

Located in an area called "The Harbor". This is a very tasty place to get lunch or dinner! We tried the Bettermost, brisket, and pulled pork sandwiches and all were delicious. Hunter provided excellent service and was very polite and helpful! This restaurant is very popular especially in the cool evenings. They provide live music on Thursday and Saturday evening as well as karaoke Wednesday and Friday evening. They offer a military discount also!

Hunter was my server and so helpful on what to order! I had the gut tickler, hatch Mac n cheese & smoked cream corn!! I'll be back and asking for Hunter

We went in for dinner and to have some okra!!! We ended up ordering way too much but that's ok because it was all delicious!! Jordan was our server and was beyond awesome!! Love the southern twang!! She asked if we wanted the okra fried a little crispier or normal. I asked which she preferred and she said crispier. I'm so happy she asked!! It does make a difference! The brisket sandwich, okra, Mac and cheese, fried toothpicks and mozzarella sticks were delicious!! Would we eat there again?? Oh yeah!!

Great location. Minus harbor parking. It was a busy Friday night but the vibe was there. Karaoke. The staff was friendly, the food was good. We got fried pickles ( i have had better) but the cowboy cabadoodle or whatever it was called was tasty. We got the big family platter for $100. Their was 4 of us and we had lots to take home. I likes the fried ribs and sausage. My niece also loved the bread pudding. Definately give it a try!

If you don't know now you'll know!! Was greater warm and friendly by Sara at the bar and decided t take a seat. Glad I did. Food was excellent had the brisket sandwich with green beans. Tasted so good forgot to take my picture of it. At 8 the entertainment got started with open mike night. What's now to love

I like the ambiance at Sideways, especially on nice days and when they have open mic nights. The staff is always great. The menu is standard BBQ fare you'd expect with great cocktails. I've eaten here 5-6 times and the food is usually good, but the last 2 times I went home with a stomachache. Not sure why, and I'll note that I do have a sensitive stomach when it comes to seed oils, but I don't have the same issue at other BBQ places. This is why I haven't gone back and hence the 3 stars.

Came here on a whim and I'm so glad I did! The energy in the room is great. I loved that they had karaoke and surprisingly good singers. Ordered a quick bite to eat and had a few drinks. Come here to have a blast and rub elbows : )

The food was great! Order the cowboy caboodle. You won't regret it! The large sides are HUGE- enough for 4 people at least. The regular sides are probably large enough for 2. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that it was cold and rainy and they had the garage doors open. I was freezing!

The food was only okay for how expensive it was. My pulled pork sandwich was super salty. And my Mac and cheese was super floured and didn't taste very good and it was à la cart, so I had to pay 5$ for the side I didn't really eat. Even the drinks were expensive!!! 3.50$ for an iced tea. No refills. The server was only okay. She only came by once to see if we needed anything. Too expensive for only okay food. Go elsewhere. SoulMan's is so much better.

The environment was fun for a younger crowd, but the food was WAY too overpriced and my pulled pork was soaked in grease. The bottom bun was soggy on my sandwich and frankly the quality of the meat was -1/10, very fatty. The barbecue sauce was watered down! I ordered "Mac & Cheese" and it came out either with an insane amount of pepper on it or some sort spice. Will never be back.

Sideways may be a great bar, but we will never know. We wanted BBQ for dinner. Two of us got pulled pork, and it was the most disgusting food I've been served in years...maybe ever. The "pork" was mostly fat, served in a deep puddle of grease, dripping wet. We tried to eat a little, but it was just awful. Six hours later, my stomach is still upset from the few bites I ate, and the lingering taste gives periodic rise to waves of nausea. We couldn't finish much of the meal. The sides were not sickening, but were not very good. There was enough pepper on the Mac & Cheese to choke a horse. Maybe that's where the meat came from. The service was adequate. To the credit of the server there was an offer to take the meals off the bill. The ambiance is full bar, with food as an afterthought. The music was too loud for casual conversation. Fortunately we were able to communicate via looks of revulsion at the greasy gruel on our meal platters.

I ordered the brisket salad and I really enjoyed it. My husband ordered ribs and they were pretty dry so I wouldn't recommend ordering them. We went for karaoke night and it was fun to have that in the area. No problem with service

I like the location and ambiance of this spot. The bbq used to be great quality, but I feel like lately it's just been mediocre. Last time I got brisket it was dried out and I didn't enjoy it very much. Probably not my top spot for bbq but it's a nice environment and location is convenient.

Hate to give a 1 star review... saw this place the night before and it looked lively, and had a live band. Next day, came here with 5 coworkers during lunch (we had an hour and a half). The restaurant was short staffed. Averagely busy. But being short staffed still didn't justify how exceptionally bad the service was.. we waited for over an hour after we ordered. Saw other tables getting their food even though they ordered after us. Waters were never refilled. Finally after about an hour, we went to cancel our order. We had to be back at the work conference by a certain time. There was a gentleman that did try to be helpful and did comp some items even though it wasn't his problem to deal with. He had made a comment that he was assigned to work in the bar area but was just helping the kitchen and waiting staff. We had to take our food to go since we had to be back for the conference. Our waitress never checked on us and never told us what was going on with our order. The order was completely wrong and most of us were missing at least one item from our plate. One of us didn't even get their food, so she just took a banana pudding that was in the bag that no one was ordered. Again the gentleman from the bar was truly trying to help. But the waitress did nothing but say sorry as we walked out and we never even saw a manager. With all that being said, the food we did get wasn't bad. Unfortunately the service was so bad I'd say it's hardly worth giving the place another shot.

If your a party animal, this might be your vibe. I had some elderly folks in tow, and it just didn't work for them, or me for that matter. The problem was there were only two tables open that were large enough for our party of six. One had a bus fan overhead blowing everything off the table and so loud we could t hear each other. We came to dine and converse, so this was a no go. The other was next to a large roll up garage door and it was open. On a very hot and humid day, that had heat warning all over the weather report and even on my map program. It was certifiably hot and uncomfortable. There is a large outdoor patio, so why did this door need to be open. By the time we got our food every fly within a half mile was at our table. Then as if this wasn't enough punishment, they opened another door! As for the food- the sides we had were all excellent- Hatch chili Mac and cheese, fried okra, green beans. The fried ribs were great. The regular ribs were tough. I don't mind a bit of sticking to the bone, but these fought back. The wet brisket was delicious- falling apart fork tender. The pulled pork was a bit dry and not as tender. The Turkey was excellent. Service was bad. Super slow and we could never find her when we needed her. We finally had to get another server to cash us out as our girl was nowhere to be found. There is a huge potential here for being a great spot. This might it was not. I'm giving more than I feel they deserve because a lot of the food was awesome. Maybe the other things were just due to somebody having a bad day. Your mileage may vary.

Had dinner for 6 people tonight. Sorry. It was pretty bad. My brisket was cold and... tasted old. Very bland flavor. My Wife and another in our party ordered the gut tickler baked potato and was told by the server they only had 1 potato left. Uh... OK. Walmart is literally across the street. Go buy like 10 and use those. This saddens me. I LOVED Sideways when it first opened. But I've had now three bad experiences in a row there. I just will not go back anymore. It's just too bad.

I had a great time here! There was a live band who I really enjoyed. Kailey our server was beyond awesome. Great personality, extremely helpful with recommendations and accommodating. I ordered the The Gut Tickler which I was so tickled by the name. They were out of baked potatoes so I opted for fries/wedges AND IT WAS SO GOOD! I couldn't finish the whole meal. I also ordered the Tropical Sunset drink which also was very good. She informed us of the different events throughout the week. I would definitely recommend & return.

Food and vibes were amazing. The view of the lake was phenomenal. Drinks were made to perfection. Lauren's service was beyond amazing, she provided the upmost customer experience . All around incredibly satisfied.

Went with a party of about 6. Three of us ordered baked potatoes. After about an hour and a half we were told that they were out of potatoes. After ordering and waiting an hour and a half. They told us we needed to order something else. After we ordered sandwiches to make it quick still waited another 40 min to get our food out. Food was disgusting you could tell it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time. Don't waste your money or time here. Plenty of other good places to eat at the harbor.

First time here, came in and sat down, no one came to greet us for the 30 minutes that we were there. It wasnt even busy and there were 4 servers working. One of the waitresses (blonde curly hair) was just talking and drinking at the bar. The other servers just kept walking past us. Horrible service and probably wont ever be back.

The atmosphere is great and I love the vibe here. With that said, we didn't have a good experience here a year ago so we decided to try again. Again- the atmosphere is great here!! Unfortunately, from the time we sat down to the time we left was not a good experience at all. There were lots of waitresses and they were all very nice. I'm not sure what the hiccup was but everything was in slooooow motion. It took 15 minutes to get waters and a tea. It took another 30 minutes plus to get 2 appetizers and another 25 plus minutes to get 3 bbq sandwiches and 1 plate. Again it was not busy and plenty of waitresses. The appetizers were ok at best. The Loaded sidewinder fries looked great - tasted ok. The pimento cheese stuffed jalapeños were probably the best thing we tasted and they were ok at best. When the plate and sandwiches came out I knew we were in trouble. The meat plate looked like a kids plate. They put a lot of brisket on the sandwiches which is great. Unfortunately- you could tell by looking at it how dried out the meat was. The Ribs were the size of my fore finger. I ordered 1/2 lbs on the brisket and it was maybe a 1/4 lbs of meat. I ordered the moist brisket and a 1/3 of it was gone from the amount of fat. There was literally 20-30% meat on the rib from with you would normally expect. I thought ok - these must be really good because it's not about the size or quantity but the quality of the food. Thankfully , it was a small portion. The meat - ribs were not good at all. The flavor is just a big miss! I give the meat a 1 -1.5 out of 10. I wanted to drown it with the bbq sauce but it tasted more like vinegar than actual bbq sauce. The texture of the sauce was like water - really bad all the way around. The sides were awful. The waitress warned me not to order the coleslaw but I did. She was right. It was worse than awful. The green beans were bad. They tasted like wet - soggy toothpicks. The cream of corn was ok ( no flavor) and the Mac n cheese was thick - pasty and very very bland. I would come here for the entertainment and the cold beer. If your looking for good - quality bbq ) or just edible bbq) - this place is not your joint. I travel for a living and eat out mostly. I've eaten at most the great bbq places we all know here in TX alone. I'm not comparing this place to those restaurants- I know better than that. We were just wanting some good ole bbq nothing over the top. All we got was rock bottom! I give an overall rating of 1.5 because the restaurant has a good vibe to it and the waitresses are all very nice.

Everything here taste nasty, cold and salty. Been enjoying Texas Barbecue for most of my life here in Texas and this place definitely doesn't qualify as barbecue it's so bad. How they're still in business is beyond me. The cowboy caboodle is disgusting and they need to kill off that menu item as it's 3 DIFFERENT temperatures on the inside. Meats are SALTY and look unappetizing. The okra was UNDERCOOKED, not to mention the long strand of black hair that was in the greasy brisket sandwich. And a barbecue restaurant that DOES NOT serve baked beans tho?????!!! Yeah ok. The macaroni and cheese is extremely BLAND and gross. The beans they served looked like vomit, the ribs were BAD. Barbecue sauce was nothing more than watery tomato sauce and vinegar. The drinks were terrible as well, I didn't even want to finish it. Keep in mind this is the SECOND time my husband and I have been here and it's even worse than before, and I didn't think that was possible!!!!! This place must've been OK once back in the day because that's the only way I can see this place getting any higher than a 2.5!!!!!! Server was nice but food is straight garbage. Looking for good Texas Barbecue, then stay AWAY from this restaurant.

I couldn't have been happier with my Brisket Salad the helping was generous and that is saying a lot for BBQ! The flavor was just as good and the salad portion was all fresh veggies. The cocktail was not too sweet and had just the right amount of alcohol. The staff was very nice and the time it took to receive our food and drinks was quick. I'm excited to go back and give something else off the menu a try!

Limited menu, side salad was packed in a small carton bowl, the pineapple margarita was almost pure juice, but the worst experience about our visit is that management did not accommodate the complaint about the tasteless margarita so awful customer service. I do not recommend this place.

The Bettermost sandwich comes together for one of the best BBQ sandwich bites that I can remember. The pulled pork, sausage and chopped brisket with the pickled slaw and squirt it with spicy House bbq sauce, game over. The bun holds up for a sandwich of this size and caliber. I cannot wait to come get it again.

There is one star solely for the fact that we were even served food. We wanted to catch some Texas BBQ and thought to end our day on the lake at Sideways. We wish we did otherwise. The service was horrible. Even asking our waiter for water took forever. The food was probably some of the most mid BBQ I've ever had. Fried okra was tasteless and the Mac and cheese tastes like it was microwaved in its container. The brisket was okay at best. I wouldn't return.

Beware because the logic here seems pretty sideways. Just no. The cocktails were awful the dirty martini literally tasted like nail polish remover and sprite. Poor guy singing live was not always hitting the notes and overall just, crappy service. Never got the appetizer we ordered and had to wave down a waitress who took more time to tell us she wasn't our waitress than passing on the message.

The food is really good The service can be a little spotty. Sometimes it's good and sometimes they get things confused but always willing to make it right. It's pretty loud so not a great place if you want to talk.

Food is ok, didn't come out hot, service is good. Kitchen is slow and often out of things.

Sitting on the beautiful harbor in Rockwall, Texas is this awesome restaurant! We sat down and had the sweetest waitresses. She brought out drinks first and then we ordered our food. The food was delicious! I don't recall the name, but there is a large egg roll type thing that tasted amazing! It's a must try! On top of the amazing food, beautiful view of the harbor, and the great service, I have to mention that while I was there, I left my credit card behind by accident. I realized I left it there after they closed. My flight back to LA was the following morning. I called and spoke with Laura, their manager, and she was kind enough to mail out my credit card to me. I cannot thank you enough!! You guys are wonderful! This spot is a must try! Great staff, great food, and great location!

Salty, salty, salty!!! Just not good bbq. FREEZING inside. The customers AND wait staff were bundled up.

The quesadilla was delicious, the Cowboy Caboodle was very greasy and kind of gross inside. The service was very slow and there was a youth volleyball team making and bringing beverages to the table and then going back to their table to eat. They didn't wash hands between eating and food service. They also walked around table to table with a donation box which took away from the ambience. The restrooms were disgusting. We sat outside and enjoyed the lake but overall we would not be back.

Ribs are definitely the best thing they had and those loaded fries. I'll dream about those fries forever now. My potato with brisket was just okay and my husband sandwich was also just okay. They were extra busy and only had two servers when we went for lunch so it did take a long time for everything. It's BBQ so on the pricy side of things but over all decent time here.

Good, but could have had more seasoning. The service was great and the larger portions of food was fantastic my overall opinion of my visit was good

Go early. We went on a weekend afternoon and they were out of half the menu. Service was friendly, though they were under staffed for sure. They are dog friendly! Overall what we did have was good.

How this place is even 3.5 stars is beyond me. That was probably some of the worst bbq I've had in quite some time. Chilis bbq is better than this. And to charge $30/lb... do not recommend this place for food.

I rarely leave a poor review, but based upon the hype I had heard for Sideways, I was VERY disappointed. I will start with the only redeeming point... a beautiful sunset over Lake Ray Hubbard. Now for the disappointments. First we went on a Monday night not aware that they had a very limited menu only appetizers, salads, and brisket or pulled pork sandwiches, tacos, nachos and burritos. I ordered the brisket sandwich, a half pound of ribs, and sideways fries. The brisket tasted like burnt meat, I burped it up all night. Very over cooked and not at all moist. It was served on a toasted homemade bun that was tasty, especially dripped in the "hot" bbq sauce. I use quotation marks because it was not at all hot. The ribs, likewise, seemed over cooked, tough and again tasted burnt rather than smoked. The fries were very good. Our out of town guests ordered the pulled pork sandwich and said that the meat had no flavor. They also had side salads and said were good. I usually will give a restaurant a second chance, but with so many other great BBQ options around, I do not plan to return. I can only surmise that there are a lot of folks with bad taste to keep this place open. As a Certified Kansas City BBQ Judge, I know good BBQ and this is not it.

I would give four and a half stars... Brittney was a bubbly wonderful server. I know after having two months off coming back meant a lot to her. The loaded with brisket baked potato was delicious- I asked for the butter on the side. Came with regular and spicy bbq sauce. Food five stars My date got the two meat plate and it was enough for two! Highly recommend the ribs. (Pork) Concerns: all of a sudden the $10 drinks were in something close to a shot glass. Three sips and done. That is not going to work for the outdoor seating in summer/spring. We asked for larger glasses and were accommodated. Love Brittney! No masks(one person), no gloves... yes plastic silverware. So many people crowded around the bar. If you are concerned about social distancing- don't go on the weekend.... The live music is great -my favorite part!!! I will be back!

I had an absolutely terrible employee take care of me named "TY" but besides that every employee that I encountered was absolutely amazing especially Mickey and Malory

Bottom Line: A festive barbecue spot with waiter/waitress service and special events many nights. I was staying at the Hilton next door so Sideways was a convenient place to grab dinner on a Tuesday night. Tuesday night is apparently open mic night so please don't say I didn't warn you. We had a big crowd and we were able to slide several tables together. Because we had a big group, everything was slow but I really don't blame that on the restaurant - I know a table for twelve-ish when you aren't expecting it can be tough to serve. Our waitress was friendly and patient with the group but we had to be patient with her too since she was often sight-unseen for long periods of time. There were so many delicious things on the menu but what appealed to me most was the special - the beef rib. I'd never had a beef rib and I don't have the opportunity to have one often so I jumped on that. It was a fun experience and tasty but I would probably get something different next time. The French fries were good but the slice of white bread I treated as cultural garnish. I don't think I've seen or eaten white bread in years! The one thing that was odd about Sideways is the drink situation. It wasn't clear to us if we were supposed to go up and get our own refills or if the wait staff was supposed to get our refills. We often had empty cups. The same was true for the bar. Since we were already keeping our waitress quite busy we didn't want to overtask her but we also didn't want to step on her toes. Overall it was a good experience and I would definitely return.

Tasted decent. Had brisket. But spent the rest of the night with severe gastric distress.

Between the banana pudding and the pineapple margarita, my heart is sold. But everything was amazing! The whole caboodle and the fried pickles were incredible! The pinto beans were the perfect balance of smoky and something sweet. The bettermost sandwich was HUGE! I ate half of the meat and still have a full sandwich for lunch tomorrow. The pineapple margarita was STRONG. My only upset was that I didn't order more banana pudding.

Horrible dump. Stopped by at 10:15to get dinner with my family. Sat down and ordered drinks. Was given menus and ordered food. 25 min later the manager comes out and tells us sorry the kitchen is closed but she might be able to make an appetizer or 2 if we are hungry. Are you kidding me ? 25 min later ? Why are you closed at 10:15? Why didn't you tell us that when we walked in? Why did you give us menus for food ? Why did you wait 25 min? Sideways ? Perhaps they got the nickname from the sideways service

Great food and great staff. manager seems to have a terrible attitude towards staff on 2/15/23. Talking to staff any kind of way in from og customers and then throwing another employee on the floor then telling them to leave. My opinion she need to be replaced. I'm a manger and would never talk to my team or treat them that way.
