These Are New Orleans’s Essential Dive Bars

"Sidney’s is off the beaten path, dog-friendly, and home to great cocktails and live music. Crawfish boils in season and a constant cast of regulars are as New Orleans as it gets." - Eater Staff

Cool little music venue. Stopped in for creepy fest and so glad we did. The bathroom situation was a little strange but we made it work. Will for sure stop in again for next year's festival!

Google
really cool place, serve food on sunday night, bartender is really cool.

Google
Decent neighborhood bar. Kinda awful beer selection but cool decor and ambiance. Band was way too loud, we had to scream at each other to be heard. Bartenders were very nice.

Google
Bartender was great!! Kitchen was clean and nuggets fried to a nice crispness. Has that “dive bar vibe”. Good place to party.

Stumbled across this lovely little bar whilst taking a walk through the city. The prices are good, the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. The day we went they were having a crawfish boil, which smelled delicious! This bar feels like you should be a regular here, it has a nice homey feel to it. I would definitely come here again and sample some of their amazing beer selection.

Google
So yeah, they decided that playing house-rattling music in a neighborhood on the regular was cool. That's an illegal business concept and it shouldn't be promoted on a public website. This was a really great neighborhood bar that had events drawing folks from around town. Then there was a plague and everyone stopped doing things and feeling like the world was worth seeing so now there's only like three people there ever, their drink and beer selection have dwindled, and even small live shows are very sporadic. They started doing music again, but now they routinely disturb the whole neighborhood and wake children on school nights, so I don't know what's worse.

Google
Chill spot but not somewhere I’d go with a lot of people since it’s pretty small once inside and not a lot of seating. The bartender was quick and the music was fun. It was a good time. Def a cozier bar than you’d get in other areas of New Orleans.

Bill Anderson

Google
Nope. New management completely ruined the vibe. Used to be one of my favorite bars in the city, would go there 1-2 nights per week. Had a solid community of regulars and was a strong supporter of local folk music and dancing. Now they lost the great music line-up, got rid of the pool table, put screens everywhere, and got rid of any reasonably priced drinks.

Yelp
How have I driven past this dive bar 1,000,000 times and not known the gloriousness held within?? We stumbled in for a drink while waiting on a Ride-Share. It was during carnival and we had to wait for a couple of drinks worth of time. I am so glad to have discovered this funky place to play pool and grab a great priced drink.

Yelp
this is definitely a dive bar. They have pool tables available for play, and open dance floor with a few high tops and some built-in benches on the wall. I went to see DJ Webbie we have you turned up all night! I also ended up being able to get some free comedy and ice cream too! Every Thursday night is free comedy and ice cream by the way... although the comedian wasn't very strong, the drink certainly were. The bartender had a smart attitude probably because he was there by himself but when I ordered one tequila sunrise the bartender put enough alcohol for me to make two. I asked for half a cup of orange juice to mix the original drink plus the orange juice to create my own 2/$6 special! this place does not offer food so be mindful of your consumption as there is no way to prevent your probable hangover. Overall the experience was good. I got to twerk and drink for basically no cost so if I'm ever in the area again I'd return.

Yelp
My new favorite bar! It's got such a large beer selection and I don't even drink beer that often but the guava wheat beer they had on tap was beer drinking goals. They have a cute pool setup in the back of the bar with couches that are comfortable to sit on. They have outdoor seating and it's easy to move in and out of the bar unlike on Frenchmen. I would definitely go back as often as I'm in the area and they have live music some nights! I was there on a Tuesday and it was a perfect amount of crowd and space.

Yelp
This place is totally what a dive bar should be - casual, local, and fun. I came here on a Thursday afternoon, so it was pretty quiet at the time (though our large group quickly livened the place up!), but it seems they have various events and activities on weekend nights here... it was definitely starting to pick up as we were leaving! There was ample seating in the back room, alongside darts & pool. The drinks were cheap enough to keep us coming back for round 2 (...and round 3), and the service was quick and friendly. And big shout-out to the seriously epic graffiti going on in the bathroom (I'm not even being sarcastic... it looks super cool in there).

Yelp
For generations Sidney's Saloon was a bar that was infamously know for its drug happy clientele. Today Sidney's is a sign of the new gentrification that has begun in the Treme/7thWard featuring all genre's of live music, comedy, free food almost every night, amazing cocktails and a great bike friendly location. This bar shows the positive side of the changing we are seeing in the city, I will be back.

Yelp
Cool hang out with cool pop up dining. I'm normally hear on Thursdays for the free comedy show with free ice cream. Tuesday night is trivia with a great taco pop up. It's a chill place, play a game, watch a performance, drink and talk to people. Very relaxed.

Yelp
Night Church! GTFO. Free ice cream?! Jokes. Jokes about space. Jokes about sex. Wow. The best. Serious, come for Night Church every Thursday. Free ice cream.

Yelp
This is a pretty cool dive bar off in transitioning part of town. They have live music and usually have an eclectic crowd of people of majority hipsters eager to cut a rug. I'm way too un-hipster to fit in very well here but the dive bar groovy elements are definitely NOLA classic and worthy of visit and when you add in live local music then it is certainly a hot spot to check out. So even if you are un-hipster and will be too uncool for school here just say "hrumph" and get over it and make the hipsters jealous with real classic and vintage prep style like I do as I'm always going to dress like it's still the 1980's and sometimes like its the 1780's.

Yelp
Came here the other night with DJ Heatwave on the ones and twos. Side note: If your friend invites you to go dancing at HEATWAVE! (an all-vinyl dance party spinning Motown/Garage Rock/R&B/Soul/Oldies), do it. I was reluctant because I greatly enjoy a good booty shakin' dance party with some Missy Elliott and the latest dub-stepping jams (I think I'm a professional dub-stepper around 2:30am, just an fyi) but Ann Glaviano KILLED it and everyone was shaking their everythings. As for the bar, do I love the neighborhood at night? Not really. I think there should be a door person or some form of security at the door. I'm sorry if there was after I arrived and I just didn't see it, but I think it's naive to think that there shouldn't be a door person, at night, in most parts of New Orleans. With that being said, I had a really, really fun time! The bar is intimate and accommodating. I don't think I ever waited that long at all for a stiff drink or a cold beer that didn't break the bank. The dance floor is JUST the right size to get you dancing with everyone and feel comfortable disappearing into a mass of gyrating hips and twirling arms. Plenty of space to sit down when your dogs get tired, and a little alcove to hang out if you're into talking and not dancing...I'll never understand those types. I'd definitely come back here for HEATWAVE to get groovy with my gals, 'cause when it finally gets cold, you'll want to get on that heat...wave.

Yelp
Came in to check out the New Sidney's since Robert sold it. It's not half bad. I miss the drink specials and extensive beer list and cheap cocktails. Frozen Vietnamese coffee still here but I miss the dark and stormy daq they used to have. Thanks to New Orleans' new asinine outdoor seating laws they did away with the picnic tables but I'm happy to see a couple little cafe tables have made it back. The pool room has been converted into the Black Lodge. Not mad about it. Weird paint job. I'll be back.

Yelp
Specifically reviewing the skinny white male bartender who wears glasses and has a combover. Come here all the time and he decided to make me feel uncomfortable and tell me to leave if I didn't buy a drink, I buy drinks here all the time, because I didn't order a drink at his leisure. It was actually raining outside and I was trying to finish a phone call before coming to the bar.

Yelp
Their Thursday night comedy show, Night Church is free and has FREE New Orleans Ice Cream and local and touring comics!

Yelp
I came to NOLA for jazzfest and the best music and places were in the bars. This place on Monday nights is absolutely amazing. King James and The Special Men play and tear it up! If you check them out on Spotify and aren't too excited about the recording, it's ok because they're 100 times better live. It was crowded but it didn't matter, everyone was having a great time. Highly recommend 10/10 would try again.

Yelp
Also came here on a Monday to see King James and the Special Men play. Agree that live is more rich than Spotify. The people are good, the slow dancing is hot. I got here around 11:15 and think I should have been there closer to 11. The bartenders were good and there's a place to sit if you need it. They also had food. Recommend.

Yelp
The bartender padded my bill. Not a credit card purchase so not worth reporting to the police.

Yelp
I'm the only white person I've seen in this bar three blocks behind my Esplanade Avenue home, in New Orleans' mostly African-American Seventh Ward, but I always feel welcome there. The last time I was there, I talked with Kermit Ruffins as he sat at the bar, checking out his Facebook page. He agreed with me that it ain't easy being green.

Yelp
This place is FUN! Great bartenders that like to chat, the owner is awesome and has amazing stories, and cheap stiff drinks. It looks like it's really coming into it's own, the space looks great and the jukebox is sweet. I was just visiting but felt like home here, enough to get drunk two nights in a row. Any night where you end at Sidney's is a good night! If you're lucky a regular will come in with leftover deep fried bacon wrapped oysters -- YUM!

Yelp
Great drink prices, friendly staff, and an all around good spot for a drink if you're in the neighborhood!

Yelp
F'ing rad bar to end your night w/ amazing bartenders (esp. Mr. Steel), cheap drinks and great setup for dancing or just hanging outside to shoot the shit. Owner is anawesome dude with a good heart and plenty of bizarre yet believable stories to boot. Swing by when you need a break from Frenchmen st.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar! Such a friendly place with great prices and plenty of live shows. We saw Kermit there on a random Monday night!

Yelp
A gem my girlfriend and I had the pleasure of stopping into during our visit. Bartender was friendly and inviting. My girlfriend got a frozen drink that was incredibly delicious.

Yelp
Great place, nice people and you get to see something else then the French Quarter. There was a huge block party across the street while we where there. Loved the place
