These Are The Oktoberfest 2023 Must-Hits in the Bay Area and San Jose - Eater SF

"Sierra Nevada Brewing’s Chico brewery is throwing a lederhosen-laden Oktoberfest 2023 party, and there are simply so many wacky things going on at the event. At the company’s Festival Field, fans can not only get litty on brew, but also enjoy food such as brats and pretzels, live music, glass-blowing demos, and even a Chicken Dance and mustache competition. The party is on for multiple days of the Oktoberfest season — September 29 and 30, and again October 6 and 7 — and while Saturdays are sold out Friday tickets are available for $60." - Paolo Bicchieri

Visited May 17th. See receipt as always. Wow..love this place in Chico! They open at 11am and the line was forming fast!! They do take reservations but was unable to get one so I got there early ( 1050am!) We sat up at the bar and we were served immediately. We are not big drinkers so we tried the beer sampler ( 4 beers). Really liked the porter! We split the huge pretzel with some yummy beer cheese and it was warm and delicious! ( plus leftovers). We also split the smash burger and chips. The burger was perfect and the chips had a little spice to them which we really liked! ( more leftovers!) It was packed within a half hour due to large groups coming in for graduation. It's a fun atmosphere with friendly employees as well as friendly diners. Good portions and a great menu to choose from. They also have regular tours which I might do next time! They have indoor and outside seating. Btw...it smells so good when you enter the restaurant...almost like a BBQ! Definitely recommend this place!

Google
Wow! What a experience. The tour is extremely affordable. The guide was most excellent. She gave tour of operations and gave knowledge of how it started along with how everything works. At end of tour, we sit around and try drinks as part of tour. I really want to go again.

Google
Wow, my only wish is that I had two stomachs! Definitely worth driving five hours for! This brewery has been on our bucket list for so long! I'm glad we made the trip and it was definitely worth it! Not only was the beer good but the food was delicious and the staff was phenomenal! We are spending the night in the area and will be back in the morning for lunch because it was so good and there were so many plates we wanted to try! Tonight I had the rooster chicken sandwich tossed in their buffalo sauce. My wife had the fish tacos. We both loved our meal! As an appetizer we had the pretzel and it was the first time I had wished there was more pretzel because there was so much cheese! Everything was delicious and it was a great experience overall! The kids cheese pizza and broccoli macaroni and cheese were big hits as well! Glad we went out of our way for this!

Google
Love this place, lots of locally sourced ingredients and reasonable prices. Pride in food and brews shows through in what gets put in front of you. Bar service could use a little less attitude, but seems part of the charm. One of the OG brew houses in Cali and well worth the journey to visit.

Google
Jen was the best possible tour guide, knowledgeable and personable. The tour wasn’t too long and showed just enough of the business to learn something without giving away secrets. Ending the tour with a beer flight and next to the gift ship is genius!

Ron E.

Google
Good service, salad was over-dressed. The heaters on the patio roast you! Really expensive compared to the breweries we are used to in Oregon. Overall a positive experience. Beer was good, just had to drink it fast before it got hot 🥵 under those heaters 😂

Google
Great place, food and service were amazing! I had my favorite beer during the entire trip. I will definitely come back

Google
Every time we come here the food is absolutely delicious. This picture is the Asian chicken salad and the sausage platter. Beer is always really good and the waiters are very friendly!

Yelp
This brewery pub restaurant is very big and spacious with lots of seating. It's very warm and welcoming. The staff were very attentive and friendly. We tried their fresh brewed drafts and it was outstanding and fresh. We loved their lighter beers. The generous portioned turkey dip sandwich stole the show with tons of unique flavors. It came with a side Caesar salad that was huge. The sandwich was perfectly cooked with sautéed onions and cheese. It's a must try for turkey lovers.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! I had the Katsu sandwich, which was amazing, along with the big pretzel and tomato bisque (my favorite). I'm so happy to have found a place that serves outstanding tomato bisque! I wish I had gotten a bigger bowl of the soup, but that just gives me a reason to return! We came right before lunch started, so we had great service from Shuleena! We didn't feel rushed, took our time, and she even chatted with us for a few moments. She was super attentive to our table while handling everything else. Great experience!

Yelp
I visited this brewery restaurant with my parents and brother, and we all enjoyed the food and beer. The selection was fantastic, and the flavors were spot on. Our server was incredibly patient and polite, especially with my dad and brother, who have strong accents and were asking a lot of questions about the beer. I really appreciated the excellent service. I'm already looking forward to coming back and bringing more friends along to enjoy the great food and atmosphere! Highly recommend it!

Yelp
It was my first time in Chico so I checked out Sierra Nevada Taproom. The food exceeded my expectations, I really liked the black & blue pizza and the other entrees at my table looked good as well. I'll definitely be back to try more food. We also got a flight to try different beers and the stout ended up being my favorite. The beers change daily so you will have to see what they are offering the day you go. Service was great and sitting outside was pleasant. I'll be back for sure.

Yelp
I just ordered for the first time from this restaurant. I decided to place an order for pick up because I don't like dining alone in restaurants and I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I was handed this $18 salad!! I was hoping for the price (without adding any protein btw) it would at least be the size of a grocery store salad kit but this is a side salad at best. I was also handed the order exactly like this, not in a bag, no utensils, just a box of sad salad.

Yelp
Food and drink was (unsurprisingly) AMAZING! The taproom is really cool looking with an awesome outside dining area, and the environment was really cool & fun. However, arriving at 1:20pm, being seated at 2pm, and not getting food until 3:20pm was pretty freaking absurd. I know it's a busy weekend at a very popular location, but like come on dude 2 entire full whole-ass hours to get food is just unacceptable. I'd be lying if I said I was never coming back lol I love Sierra Nevada beer too much, but holy hell please at least make a reservation if you plan on coming here during any kind of busy time!!!

Yelp
We go to Chico frequently. There are lots of places to eat and this is a favorite. They are consistent with their Quality of food and good service.

Yelp
Sierra Nevada was the first craft beer I had ever tried. So to see this brewery was pretty awesome. Coming from Southern California there is excellent craft beer everywhere down there but this place has lots of history and delivers quality brews that are undeniably delicious. Don't forget the food, the menu has many great options that will please just about anyone. I went with the pizza, and come on now pizza and beer always hits.
google avatar

Yelp
3.5 rounded up to 4 because I think being seated outside in the sun put a small damper on my experience. They have a nice-sized menu (not too small, not too overwhelming) and each dish seems to have a special something. The fish tacos were a sizable portion (3 BIG tacos)! I was nearly full after eating 1 taco and a slice of pizza. The batter is super crispy, but fair warning it is a lot of batter, if you don't care too much for fried food. The scalloped potatoes on the Black & Blue pizza were a pleasant surprise - makes me want potatoes on all my pizzas now! Being seated outside on a hot day (after hiking) wasn't preferred, especially with the outdoor fans and slate wooden overhang situation casting all kinds of shadows over us. If seated under proper shade or indoors, I would have likely enjoyed the experience much more!

Yelp
When in Chico, CA, a stop at Sierra Nevada Taproom is a must! I'm a big fan of their Oktoberfest beer, and the $5 special made it even better. We checked in and had a brief 15-minute wait, but the self-guided tour kept us entertained and gave us some great photo ops. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with the outdoor covered seating providing a cozy, relaxed vibe. We received a text when our table was ready, and our server was incredibly friendly and helpful. The food and beer were perfect for enjoying time with family. Definitely a must-visit when in Chico!

Yelp
As always the food was delicious. It was slowing down, so it wasn't loud, and had great conversation. The service was a bit weird, it was my birthday, and our server never came back (table of 6) to ask us if we would like a second beer or refill the kids drinks. Wish she checked because the kid's burgers were, we're pretty rare, and the kids wouldn't eat. The burgers were re-made, and they took them to go. Lastly, our server didn't ask us if we wanted dessert, all 6 of us wanted dessert.... But we decided to throw in the towel. All in all, I really like SNBC and their quality food, so I won't hold this one off situation against them.

Yelp
It's a very large restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, and plenty of parking for our 29' RV. The place is very clean though there are flies outside and a small number inside. We ordered the tomato pizza, fish tacos and a 1/2 pint of Pilsner. The beer and fish tacos are very good. The pizza is strong flavored with too much oil and not enough cheese. For the price they could do a little better.

Yelp
We came in on December 24 around 1:30. There was a sign posted that said they closing at 2. It is a large dining room and very noisy but we were expecting that. The dining area was pretty packed. We were seated immediately and our server was friendly. We ordered the pretzel and the Philly steak fries and a flight. (12$ four 4oz pours) The flight came right out : ) Our food took about 15 minutes. Beers? All were great! Maltrose falcons 50th anniversary was the favorite in our flight. Narwhal stout and knightro were great too!! The $5 beer special was on our flight and was great with the food. Philly fries were prepared well. Not greasy with plenty of toppings. The pretzel was large and was the perfect cook and size for our liking and the beer cheese? We could have eaten a whole bowl full!! With the mustards it made it great too!! For our first visit here...we have no complaints and can't wait to come again and try some of the meals. : )

Yelp
Good food and good vibes: this is the kind of place I'd come to after a bad day at work to eat my feelings and lift my spirits. They have ample indoor and outdoor seating. Our lovely waitress was servicing both areas on a busy Sunday evening, so service was a little on the slow side. Fish and chips. Usually not a go-to order for me but I'm so glad we took the waitresses rec on this one. Batter was insanely crispy and light, veggies and salsa were fresh and kept the dish bright. The Burger. The grill flavor on the patty was good and all but the star of this dish were absolutely the garlic fries. The $2 charge for them was well worth it -- I have never had garlic fries this good in all my years living in Los Angeles, Orange County, and New York City. Blueberry Bread Pudding. The first bite had me silenced and was the closest thing I've had to a religious experience in a minute.

Yelp
Great beer, good food. Sierra Nevada is my husband's favorite beer, so we stopped here when we're driving home on HWY 5. Beer tastes really fresh at the source. No doubt about it. Foods were alright. Focaccia bread was awesome. Made fresh, great sauce, we loved it. Medianoche (Cuban style sandwich) was delicious but katsu sandwich, not so. Service was friendly and swift because we went there off time. Looks to be very accommodating to big groups.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
We did not eat here just had drinks. There was a large beer menu but I do not drink beer. There was a small wine menu which I always appreciate. The bartenders were all friendly and you can tell there is a local clientele that they are all familiar with. Definitely loud inside and I can see how it can get very busy.
google avatar

Yelp
Yes, food is fresh and and Service is par. Big minus space is noisy and very crowded.

Yelp
So fun to finally get to Sierra Nevada Taproom!!! This has been on our bucket list. We did the tour, which is really short. I was expecting a little more but it was still fun and our guide was very knowledgeable. Then, of course, the beer tasting is yummy. The food in the restaurant was great. I highly recommend the pretzel with beer cheese. It was so delicious. My kids loved the pasta which they split. Hubs had the chicken cordon blue sandwich and I had the balsamic salad with chicken. Everything was really well prepared and the service was excellent. The tap room is also a lovely space and has a great patio. High marks if you are ever in Chico!
google avatar

Yelp
Service is always great. Great food. Wood fire Pizza's are really good. Great Wings. All the beers are fantastic. Nice outdoor seating.
google avatar

Yelp
Get the pretzel and sausage appetizer!! I love that they have half pints so you can try multiple beers/do your own mini flight. Very tasty, good vibes, and classic Chico dinner spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for a few brews that we normally wouldn't see down here in Texas and had the Brewers pizza with a side Caesar salad. Of course the beers were great, we got to experience a few brews that we've never laid eyes on before here in Texas, so they were a great experience. The Brewer's pizza was a very decent sized pizza, with roasted mushrooms, salami, pepperoni, mozzarella, etc. Love this crushed with a slight chew to it, bartenders were great, service was excellent.
google avatar

Darren E.

Yelp
The food here is excellent; it doesn't matter what you get. Many locals appear to come here for the food alone. They have both inside and outside-covered seating, as well as a full taproom inside. They always have a number of beers on-tap which aren't sold elsewhere they're experimenting with. The beer cheese is baked in a ceramic tray and is the only I've ever had which actually tasted good...it comes with the pretzel. The service is good and a number of the restaurant and taproom staff got to work in the brewery during the pandemic shutdown, so they're know a lot about the company, the beers and the brewing process. They have all three of their signature mustards on each table and I had to take a 3-pack home from the gift shoo afterwards. It can get louder inside later in the day, but they also have a small bar in the gift shop that's perfect if you're feeling sensory overload or alone.

Yelp
My family and I come here every time we come to Chico. It's almost always a good experience for us! This time we ordered the ahi nachos and it was delicious, more ahi would have been nice. The mango is a great touch! My husband ordered the Philly for the first time and he gave it a 2/5, it was rather bland And it lacked onions and peppers. The bread was also not too toasty. He typically orders the club sandwich, he'll be going back to that next time. I always get the rooster with sweet and spicy sauce. My rooster came with a long black hair this time cooked into the breading... hence why our review only has 4 stars. They quickly remade my meal and took it off the bill for us. Kind of ruined my appetite but our server was so sweet and apologetic even though it was not her fault at all. Bathrooms are always clean and the outside patio is nice. Mistakes happen! We still love this restaurant will be returning next time we are in town.
google avatar

Lindsay W.

Yelp
The burger was good but the Philly Cheesesteak fries were average and very cheesy, causing it to be pretty salty. Also, our server was very nice.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Great family friendly restaurant. We've been a few times before going on the brewery tour. There is usually quite a wait so plan for extra time if you have a tour booked. They have open seating at the bar and standing tables in the bar so you can sometimes get lucky to be served right away with a small group. We got the Bánh mì sandwich and fries (fries are crisp and really good) and the seasonal fall salad (whipped ricotta, brussel sprouts, beets, with a maple dressing) which was filling and delicious! Obviously a great selection of beers and they offer flights.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
Wanted to try a few beers and I asked if I could get a taste of one. Just a taste. The server asked if I wanted a flight tasting with 4. (Let's get that upsell) Ok fine let's go with that. of course since it was a flight half of them we didn't even like since you're trying new things. Couldn't believe 4 tiny tastings was $12 these should be provided free. Stout tasted like water. They upcharged us for garlic fries from the kids menu (didn't tell us) for our infant that was a little lame. Came with about 10 French fries no joke. She liked the burger. Pretzel and beer cheese seemed low quality. The sausage plate was pretty good. Overall I came away with that odd feeling of something from your past that you once enjoyed and are now sad you don't find it appealing. As with everything now food prices have gone up. A burger with garlic fries is $23. A salad is $17. Lunch for 1 with a pint would be almost $50 plus tip.
google avatar

Yelp
Sitting at the full Bar I never had to wait to get a Beer or have my Water refilled. Service was Fantastic. Great atmosphere. The locals were friendly... And the Brews... Hoptimum Triple IPA, Big Little Thing IPA & Hop Bullet Magnum were Tasty Good!!

Steve Q.

Yelp
Arrived @ 1:10 pm, put my name on the seating list for a table to seat 7 at 1:15pm. We were sat at 2:10pm. The food and service was absolutely HORRIBLE! Cold and burger, cold cheesesteak, crappy appetizers. The entire experience is not what I would expect from any establishment. Sierra Nevada needs to get management and owners involved here and watch the operation. It was so bad that they comped my entire meal for 7. And that didn't even make up for how bad it was
google avatar

Patience B.

Yelp
We came right at 5 and were able to be seated immediately in the bar area. The restaurant has a great selection of drink options and it's near to be able to look into the brewing room. If we had come at 5:30, seating would have required a wait so time your visit right. The ahi nachos were the best thing we ate.
google avatar

Haleh N.

Yelp
We are here 4 times in 3 weeks while visiting Chico for a job assignment! The food is great, inviting environment and there is a self guided tour next door!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
We went yesterday with our son and it was awesome! We got two flights and were impressed by our waitresses knowledge about the brewery and the beers. We ordered the pretzel and the sausage platter for appetizers. The dip for the pretzels was phenomenal! We tried all of the mustards and they were great as well! We ordered the pep pep spice pizza and it had the wood fired oven taste. My son got a vanilla milkshake and I love that the cups are aluminum. I got the crème brûlée and it wasn't warm all the way but it was delicious! Yum! The ambience was super family friendly. Go try it out!
google avatar

Krissy A.

Yelp
This review is long over due, been to Sierra Nevada twice this past month. Each time food was fresh & delicious. Today we ordered the focaccia bread, wedge salad & hamburger, wish I would have taken a picture. Everything cooked to Perfection. Excellent service! Our server today Quincy was so friendly, definitely will be coming back!
google avatar

Jocelyn K.

Yelp
Came here for dinner after a long road trip, and there was a wait but it wasn't bad at all. My party of 2 wasn't extremely hungry so we just got a pizza to share and some beers. The pizza was cooked beautifully, crust included! I also love that you can order half pints for their beers. We got two and it's the same price as if you order a regular pint, so it just makes it easier to share since you have your own drink. Would love to come back if I was in the area again :)
google avatar

Valerie M.

Yelp
This restaurant is fantastic. It is a little pricey BUT totally worth treating yourself. The inside is beautifully crafted with both stained glass and woodworking. The ambience is casual and the service was friendly and attentive. You are able to see the inside of the brewery and it was really cool. My husband ordered a burger and said it was very flavorful. I got the balsamic salad-- it was great and a large portion. Their tap selection is quite vast was well.
google avatar

Mark Z.

Yelp
Sierra Nevada is THE original NorCal craft beer Epic Ridiculous Everytime I drink Sierra beer I wonder why I don't drink more of it It's just so damn solid. I know draft is king...but SN just keeps bringing solid beers in every class. And the food is bomb too. I like the bar more than the patio. So don't sit outside. It's nice but not unique.
google avatar

Lala L.

Yelp
We ate like kings. Beer cheese dip: 10/10 Garlic bread: 10/10 Burger: 8/10 (partner says 9/10) Pasta: 7.5/10 Chocolate milk shake: 11/10... I don't even like milkshakes I asked for my burger with sauce on the side, but they accidentally put it on my burger. The waitress caught it before it even got to my table.
google avatar

C J.

Yelp
If you're looking for an appetizer....Get the beer cheese and soft pretzel!!!!! Yum!!!! 10/10!!! The pizza was delicious, pepperoni, sausage, all meat w mushrooms, wood fire thin crust ... it was the perfect blend of spice and savory! The smash burger was not lacking ANYTHING!!!! Full of flavor, super juicy pattys, fresh pickles ... O. M. G. Cool place to go for a date night, rad game area above the gift shop and you can walk around the brewery too!
google avatar

Phillip C.

Yelp
I enjoyed the solo dinner at the counter. Excellent service, delicious food and beers, and a great atmosphere. If you visit Chico, take advantage of this place.
google avatar

Elissa L.

Yelp
Typical good beer food. The Philly cheesesteak fries were good. I kept wanting more cheese. The clam chowder was traditional creamy and goooooood. The bread that comes with the chowder is not to be desired. The usual clamshell crackers would have made it perfect. Service friendly and attentive. Ambiance was open and airy. I liked the outdoor seating option and the tall ceilings inside.

Margaret S.

Yelp
I saw someone recommended this place as gluten free. Went there for dinner with a group. Only one thing on the menu was possibly gluten free: the garlic fries, with the warning given that they were fried in the same oil as everything else. Since I was there for dinner, I ordered them - got sick as a dog! It's a brewery. If you have to be gluten-free go somewhere else or don't go!
google avatar

Poppy B.

Yelp
Still love their beers, but their menus have gone downhill over the past couple of years and we go there less and less because of it. Their plant based options are almost nonexistent compared to the old days and it's sad because their lentil pecan patty was the best in Chico by far for a long time.
google avatar

Adriana B.

Yelp
The food tasted ok but gave us both upset stomach. Cordon blue sandwich with side salad and a pizza. We tried a flight of blonde and wheat beers because I don't loke IPAs and not a fan of any of them.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
This is a must-visit stop for us on every visit to Chico. The food is pub grub, but well done. The Taproom restaurant is often loud - quite loud - but you don't go to a brewpub for a sedate meal. The food quality is quite good; the pretzel with beer cheese appetizer is a great way to start the meal. The best part of the menu is the selection of draft beers, some of which are not available outside of the brewery. I usually opt for the flight: four 4 oz pours of whichever beers you choose. Service is usually good. It can suffer a bit during their busiest times. Not a complaint, just something to keep in mind. The free electric car charging is a nice plus! The covered parking is welcome during the hot summer days for which Chico is known. Overall, a worthwhile visit if you enjoy brewpubs.
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
This place is always amazing. Had a Philly cheesesteak this time. The servers and staff were wonderful. The ambiance is great. And the gift shop next door has awesome merch.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
The food here was outstanding. I only had the Big Pretzel, the Chicken, and three different beers, all great.
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
If your ever up in the Chico area, I highly suggest you go visit the Happy Viking microbrewery, you can book a tour or do a self tour. As far as the food very tasty and fresh, we went there with another couple, my brother & sister in law. Ok so my brother in law had a cheese pizza with jalapeños witch he loved, his wife had fish tacos 3 looked amazing, and she said they were so yummy, and my wife and I had the chicken taco pizza, sounds crazy but it was crazy good we loved it! Service was incredible as well as the atmosphere, plenty of parking. We also went to the gift shop and did some shopping.
google avatar

Alyssa Z.

Yelp
Such a great vibe, we were able to eat at the bar and we were able to be served pretty easily. The food was amazing, probably the best BBQ wings i've had in a long time. The service was good, we were able to make our brewery tour in time and got our food at just the right time.

Kendea A.

Yelp
I have been here more and more recently, and each time I come, I have more fun. The bartenders and servers are so kind and funny. Last night, our server Cailyn was particularly wonderful. She was prompt, professional, and handled her tables in such an efficient and lovely way. This is the experience that I have had in the restaurant itself across the board. Thank you for cultivating such a pleasantly beautiful atmosphere in which to enjoy the best beer and burgers in town.
