On the Grid : Sigmund-Freud-Park

"Next to Vienna's university there's this park which is mostly crowded in summer, when students relocate their activities outdoor. Be there in the late afternoon and watch the sun set behind Votivkirche, which is actually one of the most outstanding neo-Gothic building in the world. Inside there are changing exhibitions and a bunch of pomp. Nevertheless, the area around this sacral masterpiece is full of young people and positive vibes." - Maximilian Mauracher

Sigmund Freud Park is one of the most charming green spaces in central Vienna, located directly in front of the magnificent Votivkirche Church. This park is a perfect place to relax after exploring the city, whether you want to sit down with a book, enjoy a peaceful moment, or simply take in the beautiful surroundings. In the spring and summer, the park becomes lively with people lounging on the grass or using the free deck chairs provided by the city. It’s also a favorite spot for students from the nearby University of Vienna, creating a unique atmosphere filled with intellectual discussions and study sessions in the open air. At the heart of this area stands the breathtaking Votivkirche Church, an impressive neo-Gothic masterpiece from the 19th century. The story behind its construction is fascinating: the church was built following an assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1853. As an act of gratitude for his survival, his brother, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, initiated the construction of this church, which was completed in 1879. Its architecture draws inspiration from French Gothic cathedrals, with stunning stained-glass windows and a façade adorned with intricate details. Beyond the park and the church, the surrounding area is steeped in history and culture. Just a short walk away is the University of Vienna, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe, founded in 1365. This institution has been home to many renowned scholars, including Sigmund Freud, who both studied and lectured here before developing his groundbreaking theories of psychoanalysis. It is no coincidence that the park is named after him. For those interested in Freud’s life and work, a visit to the Sigmund Freud Museum is highly recommended. Located at Berggasse 19, this museum was once his home and clinic until 1938, when he was forced to flee Austria due to Nazi persecution. The museum offers a unique insight into his life, featuring personal objects, original writings, and historical artifacts. Overall, Sigmund Freud Park and its surrounding area offer a perfect blend of nature, breathtaking architecture, and intellectual history. It’s a place that invites you to slow down and reflect on Vienna’s immense contributions to academia, art, and philosophy. If you’re visiting the city, this is a spot you should definitely not miss!

We had such a wonderful time to restafter a long walk for an hour on the grass with a magnificent view on the Votiv Church. There are a lot of students having picnics, so the atmosphere is very vivid.

Next to Freud's office, the park has a wide green area and a very beautiful cathedral. People use public spaces a lot and what I enjoyed the most was seeing people reading in parks. There are also many cafes and bars around and people playing classical instruments. Despite a hot day, it was a very good atmosphere.

Sigmund-Freud-Park is a small public park opposite the Votivkirche. It's a nicely maintained green area in a fairly calm area of Vienna, slightly off the tourist circuit were it not for Votivkirche. The park seems popular with the students of the nearby university, but other than that there’s a few monuments in the park to see as well as a couple dedicated to Sigmund Freud for whom the park is named. Not a must see, but worth strolling through if you’re in the area.

Yelp
I love this park. Musicians come here. There's a mister- to keep you cool and you'll need that on hot days. There are free lawn chairs. There are lots of people to watch. The Votiv church is lovely and you can watch it across the street. The park is a stop for both the Big Bus tour and the red and green lines of the hop on hop off tours. Take a picnic like the Viennese do!

Yelp
This is a very pleasant park for a picnic, close to the city centre but away from the main tourist routes. You can buy something to eat or a cup of coffee in one of the numerous stalls in Schottentor U-bahn/tram terminal.
