The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Alameda | Eater SF

"After a decades-long love affair with coffee, Brendan Doherty started roasting beans at home. He started with local delivery, and eventually opened up shop on Webster Street. Signal roasts single origin, thoughtful blends, and even custom white-label roasting. For those visiting with an appetite, Signal Coffee also carries Model Bakery English muffin sandwiches and the wildly popular Boichik Bagels, a business that also got its start in an Alameda home kitchen. Signal now has four locations in the East Bay, including a second location on Alameda’s East End, but the Webster street garden spot is the original." - Meleyna Nomura

Google
I always get an iced oat milk dulce latte. Its not too sweet. I was super happy to find they have a passionfruit pastry!! Was super delicious. Was also super happy to see some dog treats including ham at the counter. Patio is dog friendly.

Google
Ube latte is fantastic, and the outdoor area is really cozy. The only downside is the 4PM closing time. I’d stop by much more often if they stayed open later.

Google
I love this coffee shop, I live pretty close and like to visit during the weekends when I take my walks. The staff is super friendly and I LOVE the pastries (ube muffin and everything scone are my favorites right now). The girl with the red and black hair served me and she was super sweet and gave me amazing recommendations. Definitely try this place out if you haven't already!!!

Google
Tastes great, but this lid makes it nearly undrinkable. It’s too narrow and spills out the side of my mouth. It’s also sharp and uncomfortable. One could say I’m being dramatic, but at $7 for a cup of coffee I’d like to be able to drink it with ease. Please go back to the normal lids. I know Alameda requires no plastic but you can get perfectly good compostable plastic or paper ones

Google
Signal is amazing! We were buying their coffee before this location opened its doors, and now we love sitting on the beautiful patio with a pastry and a drink. My one wish is that they used ceramic mugs for dine-in orders, but really delicious food and friendly staff.

Google
super friendly staff, delicious coffee and pastries. backyard patio is super chill. can't wait to go back!

Google
Delicious empanada (cheese and onion, with tasty salsa) and latte (black sesame)! The foam on the black sesame was like lightly sweet marshmallow fluff -- and I mean that in the best possible way. They have some tables inside, a nice patio out back, and a few tables out front. Empanada was just the right amount of food for a filling breakfast.

Google
Signal Coffee is an excellent place for coffee, espresso and snacks. You owe it to yourself to check it out and enjoy the facilities, indoors and out I the back. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Looking forward to many happy returns...

Yelp
I was here this morning at around 9am, and lemme tell you- those ladies get drinks out like nobodies business! It seemed pretty busy, but my drink and food (an Ube Latte and the breakfast sandwich with ham, egg and cheese) came out fast and delicious! The music was great, the baristas were awesome, and it really just seemed like everyone who was there was having a great time and wanted to be there. It seems rare these days that you walk into a business that the employees seem to love being at. I'd never had Ube before, but it was the perfect level of sweet to pair with the coffee. I wish I had remembered to take a photo, because the purple color was beautiful and they actually do latte art here. I sat on the awesome backyard patio (which feels like a garden oasis complete with a fountain)- and my drink and sandwich were both brought out to me. What a wonderful little spot in Alameda! Will return and recommend.

Yelp
First time trying SIGNAL Coffee Roasters! I went on a Saturday afternoon. There was a small wait. I ordered an iced mocha and I enjoyed it. There is an outdoor seating area which isn't made apparent at first glance. I think it makes this place a hidden gem. The staff were nice and quick to make my drink. Nice interior and garden. I'll be back!

Yelp
Was walking to the food place my friend and I decided to get lunch at when we walked past this coffee shop. After eating lunch, we went back to this and tried their Ube Latte. I've been in search of a good Ube Latte but sadly this didn't meet the taste that I'm looking for an Ube Latte. I like the patio at the back. It' was quiet when we came and it's also has a cozy vibe.

Yelp
Cute local coffee shop. There are seatings inside and they provide wifi so it seems like a great place to get work done. They also have a outdoor patio area in the back, which looks like a nice, relaxing hangout spot. I got a black sesame latte, which is their signal espresso with choice of milk and their housemade black sesame syrup. I thought the black sesame flavor was not enough and the coffee flavor wasn't strong either. I would come back to give other drinks a try and to chill in the outdoor patio area.

Yelp
Came by around 2pm on a Sunday and the place was pretty empty. Ordered a black sesame latte half sweet, but it didn't have any sesame flavor--or coffee flavor either. Mostly just tasted like milk. That said, the outdoor patio is really nice--shaded by trees, hanging lights, and a small fountain. Super peaceful and relaxing. A few tables inside as well. Staff was friendly and drinks came out in a reasonable time. I'd come back to do some work or chill outside, but probably wouldn't order any lattes.

Yelp
Big spacious clean organized location Front outdoor seating and an outdoor garden seating area if you walk pass the cafe Staff was quick and friendly Got a latte and it was very good Needa do a longer stay and have another coffee there soon

Yelp
Their bag of beans has ruined other coffee for me. We got the Guatemala honey ~35$ for a 12 oz bag but it's sooooo good. Even brewing our prior favs back to back with this one makes it a standout. I don't know why this place isn't more popular but don't buy up all my beans please lol It's a small store front with paid street parking which isn't the easiest on weekends but worth it to grab a bag. Friendly service with some seating. Seemed to have a steady flow of traffic coming through but not too busy the times I went

Yelp
I love finding cute coffee shops when traveling! Signal Coffee Roasters was the first stop we hit to be caffeinated for the rest of our SF trip. I love the fun variety of flavors; we ordered an ube latte and black sesame latte. The purple in the ube latte was so vibrant without tasting extremely artificial. The black sesame didn't stand out as much as the ube latte, as the flavor was a but too subtle for my liking. Overall, both were solids lattes, though I was looking forward to more fun latte art. The vibes were cozy and comfortable. Wait time for our drinks was reasonable. There was a nice outdoor seating area in the back.

Yelp
I'm surprised by my own review as I really thought I would give more stars. We came on a Sunday early afternoon and ordered the Matcha latte and the black sesame latte Pros: both drinks were served very hot, which is my favorite! Black sesame latte had a very good coffee flavor with a perfect sweetness level. Cons: the black sesame latte did not taste like black sesame at all. It tasted like a regular coffee latte. The matcha latte barely tasted like matcha and was very, very weak. It also was not sweetened enough. Would not return for either of these two drinks which was a bummer because I was very hopeful.

Yelp
Signals coffee roast is consistently the best around town. My go to is the iced latte, they also have other speciality drinks such as ube latte, black sesame latte, matcha, etc. They make it to perfection which is why I always come back for more. I also enjoy the close proximity and being able to get my coffee in a nice area with decent foot traffic. The space inside is just a tad small but enough for folks to work, grab a bite, or hang out in the patio area.
google avatar

Yelp
The coffee is strong and the food is filling. Two dangerous things for me! I tried the iced Mexican Mocha, the Ricotta and Jam open faced sandwich, and the chocolate croissant. That croissant was HUGE! I wished the toast had more jam on it, but otherwise, it was pretty good. The workers were helpful and patient -- it was my first time visiting so I had some questions. Parking was kind of difficult to find though. I went on a Tuesday morning, and it looks like the Farmer's Market happens nearby around that time.

Yelp
I was in town for work and I'm very glad I found this place! Tried the Ube and was not disappointed, it has a subtle sweet potato taste and was great! We also ordered a classic cappuccino and the barista did an excellent job on the foam, especially after I dipped my croissant in it . The selection of coffees and knick knacks was great, I think I'll be back to order the hochija and a chocolate croissant, and buy a bag of beans! Also the seating was really cool! Nothin too big inside or out but the seating outside in form of the famous alameda theatre was really cool!
google avatar

Yelp
Love spending my morning after farmer's market shopping with my kids! We love the little patio seating in the back! Great selection for the pastry! Love the potato focaccia and ube muffins with a cup of cappuccino!
google avatar

Katyayini K.

Yelp
Friendly baristas and a cute outdoor area. I ordered the black sesame latte (was told that it's a very mild flavour), and they were absolutely right! It's very very subtle and you'll need a refine palette to taste it.

Yelp
A cute lil coffee shop in Alameda! I was staying with my friend that lives in the area and this is one of her go-to coffee shops so we decided to stop by as a lil morning break to grab some morning brekkie & sips. I ended up getting the miso egg salad toast because it's not something you'll ever see in a FL coffee shop and it sounds soooo good. It was as good as it sounds and was true to the name. If you like miso and egg salad, you'll love this toast! Of course, I got the matcha latte but opted to try the burnt honey version because I think it was seasonal and wanted to try something different. I wasn't the biggest fan of the flavor but still loved the matcha. This small and quaint coffee shop is definitely a fav of mine and would recommend if you're ever in the area! I also got a cute tote from this spot to remember it by.

Yelp
Stopped by here on a Sunday. Have always wanted to try the Ube Latte so that's what I ordered. It was so good! Creamy foam with the perfect Ube taste mixed with espresso. Can't wait to come back and try other drinks on their menu. They also have a variety of pastries if you're wanting something to eat as well. Friendly staff, a few tables inside and I believe they have a little backyard with some seating as well.

Yelp
This location is closest to my house and I love coming here on my walks. Usually, because I have the baby, I order online to do a quick grab and go. My coffee is usually ready 7-10 minutes after I put the order in which is perfect from my home to their To-Go shelf! The staff is very friendly and sweet. They remember my very long name and the drinks are GOOD, especially when I need some extra energy with their espresso shots. My fave go-to drinks are The Dulce de Leche Latte and the Mexican Mocha. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The outside patio in the back is beautiful and lush with plants! Lots of room. There are always people working on their laptops inside and outside. It is quiet but not too quiet, which for me is great. I appreciate that ambiance. I'm loving these Signal locations!!

Yelp
Avocado toast (single slice, thin bread) - $9.50 16 oz cold brew - $7.00 Signal Coffee Roasters has loud music, good service, prices too high for what you get, and a completely cashless policy. I'm glad to have come once. I will likely return but look forward to experiencing other places before doing so.
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
When I'm in town I like to come get some work done! Seating/outlets are available but it can be a gamble because there's only 4 tables indoors. They have an outdoor patio that's really cute, but can't say that it's good for colder weather because it also gets wet out there. I don't normally get coffee so I cannot review it, but I have gotten the hojicha a few times and it's pretty solid. Not mind blowing but it's good! It's what you can expect from a trendy little cafe. They have a pretty good selection of pastries also! Overall, a cute local spot that is comfy and calm. The staff is friendly and they connect with their regulars!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not sure what all this cashless business is about.  What happens if you don't have a credit or debit card? So the disadvantaged can't buy coffee here? Their money should be as good as anyone else's. Cash has worked really well for a long time. Are you businesses afraid of your employees stealing from you? If you can't trust them don't hire them. It is incrementalism to get us to a cashless society and when it happens people are going to ask, "how'd this happen?". Well I'll tell you. It happened in plain sight. So about the coffee.... My partner had a great cold brew. I'm old school and went with a black coffee. I know hella boring. Seats on the sidewalk, seats inside and a really nice patio in the back. Overall nice but I just don't agree with the cashless policy. My partner edited this. I was much harsher regarding the cashless nonsense.

Yelp
Always great coffee stop while in Alameda. Their pastries are so good be there early to get some during weekends. Excellent coffee - service always fast. Only down side is sometimes back patio is most likely full.

Yelp
How'd I just found out about signal in Alameda?!! My writer friend recommended this spot and I totally get why she loves it here. Outdoors ambiance is incredible, small water fall, zen, calm and quiet space to study, writer, gather inspirations. Their coffees, teas are amazing. Locally sourced and freshly brewed. The baristas are so friendly as well, they poured my tea latte to the brim :) Definitely will be coming back to read books and relax over a nice cup of tea next time.

Alia D.

Yelp
I like their outdoor space in the back. I wish the seats were more comfortable, but the splashing of the water fountain is really nice and adds to the ambiance. I had gotten an espresso tonic the most recent time I went, good for a hot day. I also like the black sesame latte, and ube latte. In terms of food, their avo toast is okay. I would love to see a vegan empanada on the menu. I like that their breakfast sandwich has bread from mariposa bakery, another local bay area staple. Love the baristas, they're patient when dealing with very distracted customers.
google avatar

Ed K.

Yelp
I love their Solid State Espresso beans. However, they stealthily changed the weight from 12 oz to 283 g (effectively 10 oz) while keeping the price at $19.50. At a 17% price increase, I don't love it that much!! I will purchase my coffee from one of the many other quality roasters (e.g. McLaughlin Coffee) around Berkeley going forward.
google avatar

S F.

Yelp
I love the patio. Great place to relax and have a cuppa joe. The pumpkin latte is recommended. I got it unsweetened and wow, I could taste both the pumpkin and coffee. Unlike other PSL that tastes like sugar syrup.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
After some dim sum nearby, I wanted a little pick-me-up and stumbled upon this cafe. I decided to try their sesame latte with oat milk, and hands down the best latte I've ever had. (I normally stick to black coffee). The 12oz had two shots of espresso, the right amount of sweetness, and a touch of sesame flavor. Excited to try their hojicha next time!

Grace S.

Yelp
Good coffee but my gosh $6.00 for one apple cider donut??? And it's not even good compared to a $2.50 donut at Oakland Farmer's market. Which by the way it's really really yummy.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Signal makes a mad cold brew, I'll give them that. However, I will not be able to support them in the future because they have instituted a cashless policy. I don't support cashless businesses because they don't allow people to transact in privacy with cash, and don't allow access to people without bank accounts/credit cards. I hope Signal will reconsider this misguided policy.

Yelp
Stopped in the grab a quick coffee and snack before work meeting. Barista recommended latte coffee and grabbed a passion fruit scone. Excellent recommendation and coffee was delightful!
google avatar

Whitney L.

Yelp
I stopped by Signal Coffee Roasters in the morning after exploring the nearby farmers market, and it was such a good find! I ordered an iced latte, and my mom tried the hot black sesame latte. Both were great pick me ups for the morning but the black sesame latte really stood out with its strong black sesame flavor - my mom loved it! We also grabbed a baked good from the display to share - it was a focaccia with some cranberry jam and cheese? Not sure what it was called but it was delicious and made for a great snack! The shop itself had a ton of natural light. Plus, there's a back patio that's perfect for nice weather.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
This SIGNAL coffee roasters is a great place to get some work done. They've got a handful of tables inside, some tables in front on the sidewalk, and a nice patio in the back with shaded area and a fountain. I love that they have a lot of signature drinks like the sweater weather, dulce de latte, and cafe bombon. These do lean on the sweeter side though, just a tip for those who like the strong coffee taste. I got a dulce de latte and it was pretty sweet even though I got it less sweet. The staff was super helpful, especially as we asked what every single signature drink was. It would be helpful if they had some signage that explained what was in each drink. They've got a lot of pastries and canned drinks also. They also sell some merch and goods from local makers. The toughest part is the parking there. It's often hard to find parking in this area as it's mostly street parking. Sometimes the area in front of the shop gets closed off for festivals and farmers markets also.
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
The lattes are good and they have a cute outdoor garden patio in the back. Service is a little slow but is friendly. They also have a small menu of food served throughout the day in addition to your usual coffee shop pastries.
google avatar

Cynthia H.

Yelp
A cute cafe in downtown Alemeda. I tried the Ube latte and thought the balance of ube and espresso flavors was perfect. I hate to say this but the price point of $5 for a specialty coffee drink is pretty good for the Bay Area lol. Not sure when I would be in Alemeda next but if I am in the area, I would definitely get my coffee fix here!
google avatar

Pastores P.

Yelp
Quaint coffee shop downtown Alameda. Lots of options and also a small shop area besides coffee and treats. Service was great and staff was friendly. Definitely will come back when I'm back in town!
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
This coffee shop had a nice ambience. I also really liked that the variety of food items available included Boichik Bagel. However, I can't give this place a good rating because my drip coffee was served with a bunch of coffee grind. It might just be a one-off bad experience. I might revisit in the future to give it another shot.

Sam S.

Yelp
Friendly staff, very nice seating outside and nice fountain. I order the mocha when I'm there, sometimes it's very good and sometimes it's just ok. One time chocolate was at the bottom of the cup... It's not consistent. Consistency is what makes me come back to a place. I don't like being surprised by the quality of my drink, especially that i come from a far place. I hope management can do something about it.
google avatar

Cheri L.

Yelp
Super cute spot to get your caffeine fix! They have a small indoor seated area and a few outdoor ones in the front and backyard area. The ube latte had a nice flavor and wasn't too sweet, and of course a pretty purple color. Lots of food and pastry options too. Service was friendly and fairly quick!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with great ambience. The back patio offers more seating, as the indoor space is pretty limited. The bathroom didn't have a mirror, but did have a baby changing table. I ordered an Iced Ube Latte and was surprised by how vividly purple the drink was. I expected the flavor to match, but was disappointed as it just tasted like regular iced coffee. Didn't taste much ube flavor. My bf ordered the Mexican Mocha which he said was very "spice-y" but he liked it.

Tina L.

Yelp
This is the best coffee in Alameda. Whenever I am looking for a place to meet and enjoy a great coffee, this is where I love to head.
google avatar

Berna G.

Yelp
Tried the ube latte and black sesame latte here and loved both! I will definitely be ordering the black sesame again, it tastes like a less sweet peanut butter milk with some smooth espresso poured over. Service was good and drinks were made quickly. The space is really quaint and minimalistic, great spot to study or get some work done. It's located on Webster so parking can be a bit tricky. Be aware that the farmers market also takes place on this street on Saturdays.

Yelp
Started the day off super early. Tired of Bux and happened to be in the area. Saw they were open so decided to stop on by. Found parking easy enough. It's a cute location that has merchandise for sale. It has plenty of pastries to try and for those that love Boichik Bagels but hate the lines there - you can get one of their bagels at this spot. They have a very nice outside, closed, seating area that has a water fountain. You can drink your coffee and have your breakfast in peace. Menu is simple and clear. I went with the Mexican Mocha. It was legit so good. It was subtle and it was perfect. Only thing that could have made it better was if I had asked for it to be super hot but it was at a temperature that was drinkable when we received it. Staff was super nice considering how early it was (7:30a) Ordered the almond croissant it was flaky but soft. I had almost ordered something else and I am glad I went with this choice. It was a little pricey - two coffee/two croissants cost $23 with tax so probably won't make this a frequent habit but it's a wonderful change up. We would definitely be back.

Yelp
Finally tried Signal today after having it in my bookmarks for a while! I'm a self-proclaimed iced latte connoisseur, aka I spend too much of my money on iced lattes lol. They had a bunch of nice flavored options like ube, dulce, and sesame, which I wanted to try, but I decided to go with just a basic iced latte to really taste the flavor. The barista told me my 16 oz latte could come with 3 or 4 shots for the same price so I went with four cause why not? The latte was decent, but the flavor wasn't particularly strong even with four shots... maybe I'll just go with one of the flavored lattes next time. I also got a cheese and onion empanada, which tasted so interesting!! It's definitely not a traditional empanada. The barista recommended this one with the red salsa and said it tastes like pizza. It definitely smells like pizza! When you bite into it, the cheese isn't super soft and melty but there is a super strong cheese pull. After a while, the cheese combined with the dough on the outside starts having the texture of a green onion pancake or a roti, and it ends up pairing quite nicely with the red salsa, which has a nice kick. Definitely not what I was expecting!

Nicki G.

Yelp
Chai was spicy, not sweet. Just perfect for a cold rainy day. I encourage you to sit in the window seat and wave at friends passing by.

Yelp
We visited this local gem after lunch on a Saturday. The service was warm and welcoming. The outdoor space felt like a mini oasis; the sound of water flowing from a nearby fountain created a relaxing ambience. We ordered the Ube Latte (iced with almond milk), which was refreshing and the perfect blend of caffeine and ube flavors (not too sweet in my opinion). The cold brew was a solid choice as well. We will definitely be back to try the other food and drink menu items.
google avatar

Nancy Z.

Yelp
Lovely staff and delicious lattes! They have all of the classics but some very creative specialty drinks too. It is street parking which can be a bit tough but the drinks are worth the walk :-)
google avatar

Pei Ting L.

Yelp
My partner wanted to grab a quick coffee, so we stopped by due to the highly rated reviews. However, we were both disappointed, and the drinks were underwhelming. I opted for the iced ube latte, and my partner got a dulce de Leche latte. My ube latte had no ube flavor at all, I felt like I could have made a better one at home. For $6, I was really disappointed by the lack of ube flavor. As for the dulce de leches latte, it was way too sweet. It felt like I was drinking straight sugar syrup. The staff was really friendly, but I don't think I would revisit. The price doesn't justify foe the quality of the coffee.

Andrea M.

Yelp
Nice patio, though a bit of toilet stench in one corner. People I dealt with were fine. For a change I tried the black sesame latte. I could detect no sesame taste, black or otherwise, It was basically a sweetened latte - for $7.20!! The coffee is good, but it's already expensive and then they add tax - most cafes already included the tax, I wish they would too.

Lola R.

Yelp
Almost one whole year later they still have it. They put their heart and soup in this coffee and bagel like. No one else does it like this guys. I am SWRIOUS. I can't and won't get over it. Wish I lived closer. You guys rock. I love you thank you I would go here every day but I can't afford that.
google avatar

Merra K.

Yelp
What a cute spot! Love the dulce leche latte! Really flavourful with the coffee coming through. You can taste the smoothness of the shot. The backyard is small and cozy with a water feature and extra points for being doggy friendly with treats for them too! Would I come back - that's a resounding yes from me! Can't wait to try the black sesame latte next.
