East Bay Roaster Signal Coffee Just Opened Its First San Francisco Shop With Batter Bakery | Eater SF

"When I visited the Polk Gulch location that opened on March 1 inside Batter Bakery at 1517 Pine Street, I found Signal Coffee Roasters bringing its East Bay roasting approach to San Francisco with a clear emphasis on pairing top-notch pastries and a more robust coffee program; co-owner Brendan Doherty says the company’s philosophy has always been serving great pastries alongside coffee, and their simple, relatively accessible coffees mesh with Jen Musty’s baking approach. I also learned that Signal started in Alameda in 2021, now has a Berkeley shop, is planning additional locations (including one across from the Alameda Theater), and that they offered free drip (a nutty Brazilian medium roast) March 10–12 as a welcome gesture. Signal is open inside Batter Bakery from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday at 1517 Pine Street." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Great premium coffee! To my taste, it's the best coffee I've had in San Francisco. The focaccia is also very good, and the mochi is delicious, it has a unique texture, almost like a mochi-brownie hybrid. Definitely a must try!

Google
Very fun and unique menu! I was looking for a great coffee and experience so thought this place would hit the spot and it came a tiny bit short. The ube coffee was quite unique and tasty but slightly cold. The design on the top was really cool and the artist was quite efficient. Service was good but not great but that is understandable being that they had a lot of people to serve.

I didn’t try the specialty coffee or pastries but iced latte was good enough

Yelp
I tried out the black sesame latte. It was pretty tasty and decently strong coffee. It could have had an even stronger black sesame flavor.

Yelp
It's been a couple weeks since I shopped at the Tuesday Ferry farmer's market. A coffee stand has occupied this space across from the Foodwise tent. Curious about this new business at the market, I looked at their menu (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=96&select=_OaAyrtQxp3vsfqoU5MIIQ) and display (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=96&select=y-nvgnMTx0jpXZgkrr7r3w) before deciding to try a few items. I first tried the Nitro cold brew (). It hit the spot as the slight creaminess cut the sharpness of the coffee. Perfect post shopping thirst quencher. I tried the first baked item in reheating a focaccia (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=DECAJHBfgHxH20Rd2p4T3A), described as Margherita: mozzarella, fresh basil, tomato sauce, drizzled w/ hot honey. I liked the portion which is generous with the thick and puffy dough. Being more of a topping guy, this was okay and didn't wow me. The next morning, I reheated the scone (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=64sKE7TwNM_d2rpxx1pDzg), which, on that particular day, was passion fruit poppy seed. The passion flavor was medium and the poppy seeds gave this a nice crunch while the scone was not hard not dry. This was my favorite of the three as it was I ate the final item as a dessert, the mochi (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=lZS4fjUr2e6hfkvbMAoP4g), titled brownie filled w/ coffee creme patisserie drizzled w/ ganache & dulce de leche (gf). This was deceiving as, though looking like a brownie, this was soft and mushy with the syrup like coffee filling offering a flavor contrast. I can see this pairing well with a cup of coffee. Stopping here after shopping, there was no line so I was able to thoughly study the menu. Brendan was helpful in telling me about their background and making my drink and gathering my food. I will check them out again Tuesday. Please note that they are at this market Saturdays and Tuesdays. ** Thank you, Dani and Luna, for taking my cookies order and making my blueberry iced tea.

Yelp
Coffee is great but I do believe that the people making the drinks and calling out orders can have a better tone and attitude. We ordered two drinks, an ube latte and a nitro cold brew. believe that our order was put in incorrectly. The cashier gave me the nitro cold brew immediately without any sticker on it. We waited for the ube latte, but they called out a drink for me with just 1/2 cold brew. So I said I got the wrong drink and asked for the ube latte. A few moments later 2/2 ube latte was called out for me. The girl Danny (wearing glasses and flannel, red hair) who was making the drinks told me to put the drink down, that's not mine, and wait for my drink. The way her tone was very condescending and saying the in front of everyone. There was no other "Carla" anywhere near me. And of course, when we walked back, that "1/2 cold brew Carla" was still sitting at the table. The whole thing could've been handled differently in a less demeaning, less condenscending way. As a customer, I wouldn't want to helped by this type of customer service nor would be going back to a place with this type of service.

Yelp
great experience at the market! black sesame latte was delicious, nutty flavor but not too sweet. the workers were kind and accomodating.
