The Best Restaurants in Port Townsend, Washington - Eater Seattle

"What started as a fish-and-chip stand back in 1989 has morphed into one of Port Townsend’s go-to medium-high-end restaurants. Diners can still get fish and chips, but the long menu aims to satisfy a multitude of cravings, from burgers to salads to spaghetti to cioppino." - Matthew Lombardi

We had a wonderful experience at Silverwater Cafe! Our server, Barbara, was friendly and gave great recommendations. The mushroom ravioli was delicious, and the blackberry pie was the perfect dessert. The fish and chips were a highlight—crispy, fresh, and definitely worth ordering. If you’re in Port Townsend, this place is a must-visit!

Google
Wife's mussels were excellent, as were my ravioli (novel sauce flavors). But here's the best thing - Key Lime Pie for dessert! With Oreo crust, oh my 😳

Google
The Hazelnut Halibut, artichoke hearts, salads, soups, and pie were all delicious. You can tell the food is freshly made and the staff were very nice. They have carpeted floors and an upstairs area.

Love the atmosphere! Very friendly staff. This restaurant is located in a really neat old building. Upstairs and downstairs seating. There is an elevator for upstairs so I would assume it it wheelchair accessible. Food is pretty good. Wish it had more flavor. Gluten free options available including gluten free pasta. Food is pricy!

I arrived at 5:10 pm (opens at 5:00 pm) without reservations and the hostess asked if I would be done in 2 hours. I said "Yes, in less than 1.5 hours)." She sat me across from the door in the gift shop area. I was a woman by herself. I could watch the steady stream of customers coming in. There is a 2nd floor as well. The restaurant was in an original building from the late 1800's with lovely tall ceilings and stained glass in the top windows. The Pear Crush drink was good. I thought the Clam Chowder was fine but not as creamy as I had at another restaurant and it was not white but a little grey. The fish and chips were excellent with plenty of fries. Kudos to Bobara, the waitress, who brought malt vinegar and ketchup before she brought the fish and chips so it was waiting for me. She took good care of me even when her station got completely full and she was busy. With the clam chowder plus the fish and chips, I had to take half the fish and chips back with me to the hotel. Fortunately, the Palace hotel has a microwave and refrigerator.

We went here for lunch, I loved the clam chowder. It was so creamy and so tasty. Also had gyro, the meat was crunchy and delicious. Everything was fresh including the pita bread. The sauce that came with the calamari was delicious. Friendly staff, clean bathrooms. Definitely recommend this place if you're in Port Townsend.

We unfortunately showed up 15 minutes before close. They sat us anyway. Our server was a wonderfully sweet older woman with shoulder length white hair. She reassured us that she is happy to assist and to take our time during the dining experience. We left an hour and 5 minutes after close and did not get any negative vibes from anyone. She even encouraged we get dessert which we did. The food: Light beer was flavorful The fish and chips was amazing, the cod and salmon combo had seasoned batter that was thin with a generous amount of perfectly cooked fish for the price of 21$. We were pleasantly surprised. The wygu steak I got medium. While it came out medium well center to well done on the ends, it was still flavorful. The broccolini were so yummy dripping with a butter sauce and the mashed potatoes had a lovely garlic flavor that was the perfect amount. The blackberry pie with a la mode ice-cream was very good, not too sweet. Overall a great experience.

Google
We just ate here last night and everything was simply amazing. Mackenzie was our server and she was genuinely kind and worked hard waiting on her tables. Food was delicious. Clam chowder was rich and flavorful with fresh clams. We also had the ravioli special stuffed Gorgonzola and walnut, tossed with dates and a wine cream sauce. So good! And dessert was amazing. We shared a key lime pie and I had their almond amaretto coffee. We will definitely be back again

Yelp
Went at the height of lunch service and shouldn't have been surprised that service suffered. We ordered an appetizer for the table to share - which came after our entrées. Good thing the tempura artichoke hearts were fantastic. The drinks took a long time. My lamb burger was ok, but my fries didn't come crispy as ordered. My other got the cod fish and chips and reported them delicious. His fries were crispy! The blackberry pie was great, even the crust was good.

Yelp
Silverwater cafe is located right by the movie theater in downtown Port Townsend. We came in for lunch around noon on a Saturday. The restaurant was not busy, but had several tables full. The restaurant is bright with plants all around. The staff were all very friendly! They were very attentive and very nice. We started with the sesame ahi, it was not my favorite ahi I've had. It was just ok. I ordered the shrimp scampi with gluten free noodles, there was a good amount of shrimp with the scampi. That has become so rare at restaurants! The pasta was very yummy, it was a smaller portion. This may be because it was the lunch portion. My partner ordered the Reuben, could use more corned beef and sauerkraut. The sandwich flavor was good, just could use more filling. Overall would come back!

Suzanne L.

Yelp
Service and ambiance was good. Food was not so good. Ordered a filet requested it well. This not generally a problem, but this time the fillet was way beyond well. The fillet was burned actually charcoal on one side. This is clearly a mistake that never should have gone out. I had the Coho Salmon a fine piece of fish which was cooked skin on. However, the skin was not crisped properly and remained on the plate. I love Rhubarb pie, but could not eat this one. Just tasted off. Sorry did not meet expectations for a moderately up scale menu.

Yelp
We ended up here after another nearby restaurant did not have our table ready in time for our reservation, so we really appreciated the last minute opening. We started with the baguette and the fried artichokes. The baguette arrived warm and the fried artichokes were tasty. For my main, I got the seafood coconut bowl, which was jam-packed with seafood and flavor! I don't know why this wasn't marked as a specialty item/customer favorite on their menu, because it really should be. The rest of our group got the shrimp scampi pasta, Sicilian mussels, and the halibut special. I tried the mussels and the halibut. Both were good, but after trying the coconut seafood bowl, I was disappointed by the other dishes. Our server was very nice too. Would definitely recommend this place if you're visiting Port Townsend and/or need a meal before or after seeing a movie at the Rose Theater!

Yelp
This is my new favorite place in Port Townsend. Came during lunch during a holiday weekend and still got seated. Got the French French dip sandwich and let me tell you it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Melty brie Delicious zingy au jus out of this world truffle fries Husband got a elk Greek burger and it was also good but we agreed the French dip was better. We have been talking about it for a week and plan to come back for it. Service was good and the place had a nice local atmosphere.

Yelp
Exceptional. Wow, Cafe Silverwater did not disappoint. We were greeted with a bright, shining face, and the service was outstanding. Mikayla was bubbly and made sure we had everything we needed. We ordered a few cocktails to start (yum). Halibut and BBQ ribs for dinner. It was excellent all around, but the ribs took the cake. Arguably the best ribs I've had - falling off the bones. It is a fun sailing town restaurant with such a fun atmosphere - stop in if you are ever around!

Yelp
We came in on a Thursday night without a reservation, hoping to get a drink and apps before a movie. We were seated right away and our waitress was very attentive. We told her what time our movie was and she thanked us for letting her know and made sure that our food was out quickly, we had to go containers, and the bill was handled quickly, so 5 stars for service! We ordered the pear cocktail (I believe it's their signature cocktail) and it was refreshing, tasted exactly like pear! We also ordered the seared Ahi, the truffle fries, and a salad. Everything was yummy but the truffle fries really stood out to me. They were the perfect ratio of crisp, salt, and truffle. As far as ambiance, it seemed fairly casual. The decor was mostly plants, and they had giant monsters, spider plants, pothos, and more.

Yerrow G.

Yelp
Solid choice for good food. I had the cioppino which was very flavorful and fish was perfectly cooked. Dare I even say probably the best Ive ever had. The reason for three stars? We also ordered the Waygu which definitely did not taste like Waygu. It was very lean albeit perfectly cooked to medium rare. It was lean enough that I thought it tasted like eye round. Service was good.

Yelp
Charming location, service was friendly and attentive (I hate when my water glass is emptiedand they kept me hydrated) cocktails were delicious! Food was excellent! Especially the baby back ribs - went back a second time for more

Art S.

Yelp
Terrific food and very good service. Just wish it was a bit quieter Lots to choose from on their menu. Their fish and chips are a couple notches above.
google avatar

Yelp
What a fantastic spot for lunch! We were a party of 6 and everyone loved what they ordered! Our server Mason was so sweet and very efficient!! Plenty of room and they also have an upstairs area and bar as well. We ordered fish & chips, lamb gyro, apple salad, clam chowder, club sandwich. The fries were so yummy! They make amazing cocktails and for dessert we had a key lime pie with Oreo crust! - perfectly sweet and tart! I would definitely recommend this cafe!!

Yelp
Good experience, atmosphere was nice, location was right off the strip and food was pretty decent. I ordered a cup of daily soup and sadly I don't think it was homemade which was disappointing. If it was, the broth was not deep in flavours enough for a mulligatawny. The half order of Washington salad was AMAZING! The ingredients were sooo fresh and dressing was fantastic! The French French dip was pretty good but I think the fries were the best. The shrimp scampi was good too - the shrimp were a little bland, it would have been nice to have them more salt and buttered. The sauce that it was in was fantastic though and the overall dish was worth it. I didn't realize they made offered mocktails until the bill came and it was advertised on the bottom so it would have been nice to have it on the menu because I would have ordered some. Good reason to come back again next visit to port Townsend.

Yelp
The food was really good . The waiter was great fast . Nice view out window. I really loved my drink Purple Mountain. Wow the grilled cheese was so so good . Lamb meatballs were very good too. Fish & chips were perfect

Yelp
Hubby and I are only on cocktails so far, but we are SUPER impressed with them and the food menu. More to come! Here's the more to come, a couple of days later but still fresh in memory: OH. MY. GOD. Everything here, from cocktails to wine to chowder to entrees to dessert to the STELLAR service, was outstanding. Everything we ordered was top quality and fresh. Hubby had an entree special, Ravioli Giorno (on that day it was crab-stuffed ravioli). I had a regular menu item, the Coconut Seafood Bowl. Both were perfectly prepared and utterly delicious. We went for a couple of fabulous made-in-house desserts too, even though we didn't really have room for them: Blackberry Pie and Amaretto Peach Pie. Both came with homemade whipped cream, and we splurged to make each à la mode too with vanilla bean ice cream. Our server (wish I could remember his name) was very knowledgeable about the cocktails, wines, entrees and desserts, and very patient as we struggled with indecision from wanting to try EVERYTHING. All in all, this meal was a wonderful experience in a unique, charming environment. We can't wait to plan another (longer!) vacation to Port Townsend so we can dine here again!

Yelp
We make the trip out to Silverwater a couple times each year, and the food is always great. Tonight was no exception! I've tried all of the desserts, they are amazing! I love the shrimp scampi, but I make my try something new each time, and I've never been disappointed. We had the lamb meatballs tonight too, and they were also delicious. Love the ambiance in the building.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely amazing and the layout of the restaurant is so inviting. The hamburger is surprisingly good my teenage niece )who typically never finishes burgers elsewhere) wiped her plate clean here...TWICE! When we come out to visit, this is the place we always hope to visit.
google avatar

Eric J.

Yelp
This was a too go order right before they closed so I ordered something I knew would be quick. They were nice enough to say okay half an hour before closing. The fried oysters had the breading falling off and the zest on top was just way too much. They were so oily it was hard to pick it off. The stinger was the clam chowder, it was the worse I've ever had. I don't know it it was the bottom of whatever it was scooped from or what. Next time I visit I'd want to try them again.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
What a cool find in Port Townsend! Staff is efficient and just friendly enough, the food was uniformly solid across our 4 meals with the standout being an absolutely stocked cioppino. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Eric s.

Yelp
This place is great! Atmosphere, nice. Employees, nice. Steak and pasta dishes were delish! and oh the pies, off the hook! We got peach and a berry pie...Wow! Homemade and we even bought another slice for later. Highly recommend. My only suggestion, the name having "CAFE" in it makes you think it is not a dining type of restaurant. We were about to go somewhere else, I just happened to look at menu and realized it was a nice restaurant for dinner.
google avatar

Cindy D.

Yelp
Wonderful, fresh local foods plus great ambiance and excellent service. (Special thanks to Bob!) If you want a special dinner when visiting PT, this is the place to go.

Sherri L.

Yelp
You know when you truly have a wonderful meal, and the Drink is so good, you can't stop thinking about it and the server named Jonathan was fabulous, that you have a rare 5 star experience. And it was exactly that Saturday evening, the 26th of April. Lets talk about that drink. I believe it was a Cherry Rum Manhattan. Don't quote me on that, but my God was it amazing! Not sure for certain what was in it, but a high shelf rum, fancy cherry syrup, just a drop, bitters, and a whole lot of baby makin goodness. It came in a Martini glass, burgundy in color and those fancy Italian Cherries, 2 on a pick, laying across the top of the glass. My oh My... The food. I ordered the Halibut special with Strawberry Rhubarb Chutney, couscous, and veg. The Halibut was cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the 3 piece fish and chips and commented, not greasy and loved the batter. Our server Jonathan, also a bartender, made my drink, and as sexy as it was, at the same time, it had What we Danes call Hygge. Like a warm hug. Cozy. We will certainly be back. The atmosphere, staff and food was just so much appreciated. It had been a rough few weeks for us, and this Dining experience just made it so much better. We also enjoyed sitting upstairs. We will be back, and soon.

Yelp
This review needs to be updated. Silverwater is for sale, if not already sold. The waitstaff are just as nice as ever but the food preparation has declined. The fish sticks are now too crispy and airy. The sauces are not as tasty and generous as they used to be. They are starting to change their classic American dishes to things that are an attempt to be different but I it's Just not working. There are many places in town now that specialize in really good, uncommon foods, e.g. Thai, Chinese, Italian, etc., and do them better. The prices are getting so high that I know a lot of folks like us are just not going on a regular basis as we used to. Bread before dinner is no longer complimentary. I am so sorry to see this happening as Silverwater used to be our go-to spot in PT.

Kathy S.

Yelp
Made a reservation weeks ago, got there to find that they are closed. Resos can only be made by phone, so it's not like some online service got it wrong. They couldn't even be bothered to call us to cancel. How about we all make resos for 8 on Saturday at 7, and then not show up? Thumbs down to a business that gives the Eff You to its customers

Jim F.

Yelp
I had the fish and chips with one cod and one salmon and a Bloody Mary. My companion ordered the same but with a side salad and ate half my chips. The food was good, service was attentive and the bar good. Funky space: someone in there has a green thumb.

Emily M.

Yelp
I've been meaning to post this...couple weeks ago we went to Silverwater for dinner and I ordered the shrimp scampi pasta.....meh. The flavor was off, it just was really weird....but that's okay bc maybe it was just a flavor I didn't like. They were generous with the shrimp portions which was great but there was barely any pasta. The dish didn't come with bread (I asked bc maybe they forgot to bring it? What kind of pasta doesn't come with bread) there should have been bread bc the entire dish was in a bowl full of liquid. I didn't understand what you are supposed to do with the liquid.....drink it? Buy bread? I left hungry. For $30, I should have been full but I was still hungry. I almost went across the street after and ordered pasta from the fountain cafe bc for less than what Silverwater charges, their pasta servings are huge and delicious! I give their food a 3/10

Yelp
Located just off the main street in Port Townsend. Three different sources recommend here for fish and chips and they were correct! Very nice interior, friendly service, and the perfect fish and chips with a delicious side of slaw.

David S.

Yelp
Food was great, waitress was super helpful - even recommending another venue that had oysters that day. Good drink menu with creative cocktails, good beer options. Food had many good seafood options. Halibut was great, another has fish and chips which was also great

Tess I.

Yelp
Food and service were great. This was the best place we ate during our entire trip. My sister and I split an entree and they gave us both sides and salad for an additional $4.00. It was the perfect amount of food. We tried their mocktails and they were fancy and delicious.
google avatar

Cecilia T.

Yelp
Wonderful dinner, nice ambiance, delicious food. Excellent and attentive service from Bobara. Thank you so much!

Robin F.

Yelp
Went for my birthday. The steak was the worst . Maybe 1/2 thick, ordered med rare and had Zéro moisture. Dry and tasteless. Ate 3 bites! Prawns were ok. Last time i will go back.

Mike M.

Yelp
Very nice place to get a nice meal. Quiet setting, a little "refined" I guess....but not stuffy. Seems that most folks had reservations but we were able to walk in on a Saturday evening (in beach clothes) and get a seated without a problem. Service was very good. Highly recommend the shellfish.
google avatar

Olystacy B.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stopped in here for lunch for their "famous fish and chips". We both love fish and chips and are always on the look out for new restaurants to try. We were disappointed here....the fish was ok. It was heavily breaded and pretty greasy. The fish portions were on the small side for the price point. The fries were decent but they skimped on that too. Clam chowder was TO DIE FOR. So delicious and a reasonable portion. Service was decent, nothing to write home to mom about but not horrible either. Delicious ice tea! We enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. It was cozy and quaint. Parking is on the street so it can be difficult to find parking near by but it is an easy walk down the block for more parking.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
We love this place! It never disappoints! Tonight was no exception. The service was top notch. It's not fast, but that was ok. We had a delicious baguette with dipping sauce and and a glass of wine while waiting for our meals. The restaurant is cozy, warm, and inviting. The wild caught halibut was outstanding. The portions were great and we enjoyed every bite! Thank you! Keep up the good work. We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Sometimes overlooked by the tourists as it's around the corner from the main drag....well worth the walk. It's our go to place when visiting from bainbridge & never disappoints!! At our table, gorgeous risotto, creamy polenta & grilled cheese worth noting!! Not mention the carrot cake & blueberry pie w a crust mama would be proud of The best part is the loveliest servers in town. Don't ever miss the opportunity to stop in!!

Vanessa D.

Yelp
This was one of the best fish n' chips I have had! Might be better than Proper Fish in Bainbridge. Fries were seasoned nicely and crispy, but not overdone, the cod used tasted very fresh along with the light, nicely seasoned batter. I ordered the cole slaw which was extra, I prefer a creamier dressing, but it was a good balance to the fried food! I also ordered a local Kombucha which it was nice to have some non-alcoholic or (very low alcohol anyways) local choices. Service was great, attentive and very friendly! Atmosphere was very relaxing in a beautiful old victorian building with stained glass and local artwork. A nice option in Port Townsend!
google avatar

Kaitlin M.

Yelp
Love the comfy chairs in the bar! Great place for a meal! Recommend the Haut Bridau white wine w/ the halibut. Outstanding recommendation by the somm. Great great great meal.
google avatar

Julie F.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch after perusing the menu online and we couldn't have been more pleased with our choice! We split the house made lentil burger, which was absolutely delicious especially when accompanied by the sweet potato fries, we highly recommend! We also got Deep fried artichoke hearts and let me tell you they are addictive and fan-freaking-tastic! We also got the Athenian pasta to go. The service was amazing and the people were just nice. It's always good to have great food in a great environment (I love all the plants they have growing inside the building) brought to you by just actually genuinely nice people. We live about an hour away from this location and will be returning soon because, you know, the deep-fried artichoke hearts! (I wish I had gotten a picture of the burger and a pasta because both were not only delicious but well played it and presented)

Cathy C.

Yelp
We love this place. They have many gluten free options and good service. Don't miss the truffle fries.
google avatar

Ray H.

Yelp
Everything about our dinner here was 5-star: very attractive, comfortable space, tables not crowded together so noise level was just right; our server, Marion, was efficient, helpful, and personable; we split a delicious, imaginative green salad with goat cheese, almonds, and figs (when I asked for no figs because my wife cannot eat them, Marion asked if I'd like them, in which case she'd bring them to me on the side...I did, and they were a wonderful addition); my wife had the scampi without garlic and with GF pasta, which could have been very bland, but instead was very flavorful, shrimp perfectly done; I had the special of halibut with a relatively light hazelnut cream sauce (WOW!), garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans. We had a very nice Pinot Noir by the glass along with our entrees. Tab was right around $100, an excellent bargain for the meal we enjoyed!

A N.

Yelp
Can't comment on the food as we couldn't get a seat.... It was very clear the host didn't want our business and gave us a face and claimed they can't serve our party size - 5 people. Very rude..it requires some real talent to make me post a review... But they earned it
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
I love Port Townsend, and it's been way too long since I last visited. But I'm always on the lookout for a good new spot wherever I go, and this place was it! Inside and out, it was a cool and beautiful historic place. The hostess was very friendly and helpful me grab a nice little spot on the patio out front, with a great view of the historical street on a nice sunny day. I ordered the Ultimate Grilled Cheese sandwich with 3 different cheeses on a very nice seeded bun. And I love basil aioli, it's like catnip to me. So delicious! The mixture of tastes and textures was just a pleasure! But the biggest surprise came with the lemonade from the bar. It was definitely the BEST lemonade I have ever tasted. There was a special brightness to it, and they said it came from a mix, but I would swear there is possibly some lavender in it, but it was absolutely stunning in it's fresh and unique taste! Wow, I wish I could replicate it. Amazing! I'd most definitely return to Silverwater Cafe!
google avatar

Erin H.

Yelp
If I could give our waitress 10 stars I would. You never know what you'll get when you're dining out as a group (especially with kids) but she was non-flustered, funny, and absolutely all over it. My husband and I had the Caesar salad, ahi appetizer, clam linguini and a few drinks. Ahi was fresh, salad was tangy, drinks were poured well. I would definitely come back in a heartbeat!
google avatar

Trevor T.

Yelp
A more upscale place, good for dates/romantic meals. Our server was great, very prompt. The house salad was fantastic, but the Sesame Ahi was just good. We had a copper river salmon special which was really good. good wine selection, too.
google avatar

Ella G.

Yelp
Great food Great place and setting Great service!!! Had 2 soups, piroshki and duck all were great!!!

Phyllis B.

Yelp
Been going here for years. So helpful as I have to be Gluten Free. Service has always been wonderful and I love the atmosphere.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Stopped in here for lunch on a very busy afternoon. The food was tasty and the staff were very apologetic about the long wait times. I had a great salad and chowder.
google avatar

Sara H.

Yelp
This place seems well loved by the local community and I really wanted to love it too, but everything here was just ok. I felt bad that our waitress noticed my lack of enthusiasm and asked if they could bring somethjng different for me, which I defintely appreciated. There isn't one thing in particular I can point to but generally felt the menu, dining room, etc was in need of an update. We'll try somewhere different on our next visit.
google avatar

Carlos B.

Yelp
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED!! In the day and age of COVID-19 global pandemic, and the limited seating per the Governor's decree, you'll need to make reservations. Thankfully, the restaurant hostess jotted down our name and phone, and immediately made a "reservation" while we were being seated. My friend was begging me to visited this restaurant. It was our last meal before heading home, so I relented. The service was impeccable, and indicative of the price point paid per menu selection. The ambiance was chill with the jazz music at a low volume to have a conversation yet not have to shout over it.

Yelp
Nice surprise. Quintessential Port Townsend, understated, well sourced food, prepared well and served with great finesse (by Norina). Surrounded by over-bright touristic places, here, you get good local ingredients, thoughtfully blended and cooked - we had the two daily specials: a grilled chicken sandwich with melted provolone, olive tapenade, local greens and pesto aioli was a perfect blend with nothing overpowering the other. Nice! The seafood risotto was flavorful with a cornucopia of fish & shellfish. The rice wasn't as toothy as we like but the generous broth might have added to its softness. Great spot for teas! Their 32 Oz. tea system is both simple and clever. No kitchen pyrotechnics; no obscure gastronómica. Just superlative food, service and ambiance! The decor is amazingly comfortable yet not designery, a very rare achievement in commercial interiors, all each screaming for your attention without inviting you to sit and enjoy both the Neal and conversations. Even the sound system works, with a lively curated soundtrack (Santana, some times!) that wasn't too loud or too close to any table making speaking a chore.
