Ann Arbor’s Best Pizza, Mapped | Eater Detroit

"Despite an expansion that took it from a carryout to a full-service dining spot, Silvio’s can still be easy to miss from the street. Those who seek this spot out will find a selection of Neapolitan-style pies such as the Patate with roasted potatoes, rosemary, olive oil, mozzarella, and gorgonzola. Silvio’s is also known for incorporating herbs from its in-house garden into the dishes." - John Reyes

I’ve been hearing about Silvio‘s for a while from a couple of friends, so we decided to give it a try. It is uniquely situated in the corner of Bush‘s supermarket, but don’t let that fool you. It has a separate entrance and has a very quaint atmosphere. For those who don’t know, Trattoria represents a family run business in both the kitchen and the front end of the restaurant, with homemade food. As we were seated, we noticed a gentleman in the back cooking and making pizzas and found out later that he in fact was Silvio, making the food with his own hands. Our waitress was of course, family as well, and told us that every item on the menu is made from scratch. And it really showed! I had lasagna, which was absolutely fantastic! I would’ve liked a little bigger piece, but it was great. My wife had salad and the Michigan ravioli, which was very unique and tasted wonderful. The salad was presented beautifully and included artichokes and other specialty ingredients which made it beyond ordinary. We definitely plan to visit again!

My son and I went here to eat and the food was amazing. Wish we had larger stomachs so we could have eaten more! The Mushroom pizzas were both beyond our expectations. And the homemade soup made us want to come back the next day. Service was pleasant and they treat you like family. Great spot to enjoy a relaxed and delicious meal.

If you haven’t already, I’d HIGHLY recommend visiting Silvio’s Trattoria E Pizzeria on Canton Center. The owner, Silvio, and his wife are the head chefs and it is a family run business. Incredible handmade pizza and pasta and wonderful service. Last night, Silvio made a fresh batch of gluten free pasta just for my order. It was absolutely delicious and his kindness and hospitality are unmatched. I have celiacs disease and have been impressed again and again by how accommodating the staff is in this regard. Support a local family owned business AND enjoy an incredible meal. We keep going back!

Only good thing I could say is the girl in the front was nice and the food didn’t take long, but the portion size for the price is ridiculous! I got an order of the Michigan Ravioli and a side of garlic bread and my total wad $24. The size of the ravioli looked like a kids meal portion, and the bread was just a large, stale crouton. Definitely wouldn’t recommend.

I came to this like many times. There pizzas are great. Ambiance is absolutely fantastic. Servers are always there for you. Great drinks collection. You feel welcomed and attended all time. I feel this place give me great atmosphere to go and have great food and drinks.

Google
My husband and I have dined in a couple of times on regular nights and always enjoy our food, servers and the atmosphere. This past weekend we hosted 70 people here for our daughter’s baptism and I heard only compliments from our guests. The food was delicious, everyone working was friendly and helpful and the space was perfect to move around to greet and mingle with our guests. Thank you Fran for going above and beyond!

Google
We love the quality of authentic Italian food in this local restaurant! Home made pasta and desserts are the MUST to eat! Wine selection from Italy is great and they don’t serve some cheap wines at some restaurants do. They have good quality wines in reasonable price. It’s a hidden jewel place!

Google
Today I had a very bad experience at this place, first we had to wait (my husband and I) because we didn't make a reservation and okay we decided to wait, the guy at the entrance told us 15 to 20 minutes which turned into 40 minutes. We had been waiting for 25 minutes when a couple arrived that also didn't have a reservation and after waiting five minutes the couple asked to sit at the bar after ordering some drinks the guy at the entrance passed them to a table 😏and told us that as soon as a table was free he would pass us by, stupidly we decided to wait 5 more minutes because we had already lost 40. At the end of 45 minutes of waiting and not seeing any intention of getting served, we left. I don’t know if I feel discriminated against or if it was just part of their terrible service! 👎🏼

Yelp
I love a good margherita pizza, but this was definitely not the place for that. Gave it another shot and came back hoping for a better experience. Instead, we stood waiting at the host stand for someone to acknowledge us. When the guy finally walked over, he just said, "We are full," with a confused look--no estimated wait time, no suggestion to check back, nothing. So we left. And we won't be back. Anyone raving about this place must have never been to Cantoros or any decent Italian restaurant.

Yelp
My husband started with the garlic bread. It was a nice size piece, and was buttery and garlicky. I loved it, though it was a bit strong on the garlic for my husband. Not for the faint of heart! I decided to try the lasagna and was glad that I did! It was some of the best I've ever had. All of the layers were melty and delicious - none of that chalky ricotta here! Silvio's advertises that make their own noodles, and that always makes a huge difference in texture. I would definitely order this again. Truly crave inducing!

Yelp
Finally had the pizza and the dough was chewy and flavorful. I had the seafood special and I loved that it truely tasted like - and was prepared like a pizza from Europe. The seafood was delicious and so unique! And there was a jazz band playing!! Just love this place so much. Always great service and wine selections.

Yelp
I don't know how anyone would rate this less than 5 stars. The restaurant has the cutest atmosphere, perfect for a casual lunch but also for a nicer date night. They seem to be very family oriented with their hiring too. The bread and olive oil is to die for, and the food was out of this world. We actually had 2 things missed in our order and didn't even notice because we were so happy with the food, until our server apologized with a complimentary dessert, which was also amazing! Can't recommend this place enough. You have to try it.

Yelp
The food is fantastic and traditional, service is always top shelf. outdoor dining is available inside is nice or better than you'd expect for a restaurant in a bushes grocery store (don't let that put you off this place is worth it!). Get the Porchetta with Rapini!!!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Niece had New Year's Eve luncheon for family there. Bread was perfect with great crust and olive oil- kept bringing it. Caesar salad excellent. Pasta pomodoro was perfect. Chicken piccata tender and wonderful. And the desserts were great- mini cannolis and other pastries. Heading back there when we are in town!

Yelp
I returned to give another try. I was very happy with the service while dining in. The staff was really Friendly and I got pasta which seems to be a strong point for menu options. They have a lot to choose from such as gluten free . My dinner mate got the blueberry pizza and loved it. We both drank wine. Thank you for a great experience . I'm happy I gave them Another chance .

Yelp
Miss the JBs bbq that was here in Bush's before but this is a pretty good place. Nice patio too. Have only had a pasta dish and the lasagna was really good! Need to comeback and try the pizzas!

Yelp
Got take out from this place to celebrate my home bound mother's birthday. Unfortunately it was so disappointing. We paid $26 for a tiny 3"x3" piece of lasagna that was just mushy (pasta didn't hold up to being reheated by the restaurant). Other dish had black spots in the pasta but I don't think it was pepper. Definitely won't be back. I'm very sad that we had this horrible (and expensive) meal for a celebration dinner :(

Yelp
Plain calamari and lasagna was average. Uncomfortable seating. Service was good tho, will need to try again

Yelp
Insanely delicious!!!!! THANK YOU for giving me a taste of Italy in the U.S. I felt like being back in Roma again for a moment! the owner talked to me at the bar for a little bit and you could tell that everything is made with passion and authenticity! I met his daughter as well and she was pleasant and sweet. Thanks guys, I am definitely coming back with hubby and maybe even whole work crew since it's so close in the area. 10/10 Recommend!!

Yelp
I have ordered the blueberry pizza adding grilled chicken for lunch. The chef actually upgraded the chicken to add rosemary with garlic and it tasted great. I'd like to try other dishes too!

Yelp
I visited Silvio's during a visit to Ann Arbor in February 2020. You can find my review here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/silvios-ann-arbor-2?hrid=r-4yFFcJ7uHn9pXlqXqnWw&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) I loved Silvio's when I was at the University of Michigan and was happy to see that it was still in business. Silvio's has since moved to Canton and is in the same building as Busch's Fresh Food Market. Quite a change from a big university campus to suburbia, but the new restaurant is more spacious with outdoor seating. I ordered the Patate Pizza. It is the potato pizza with gorgonzola cheese and rosemary. It was good but tasted a bit plain. There was also a bit of crust bubble and burn. If I order it again I will ask for additional toppings like sausage or truffle oil. My opinion hasn't changed from February 2020. I was more impressed with the food when I was a student but it is still a good place for organic Italian cuisine.

Yelp
Service was awesome. Italian singer was a pleasant surprise. He was great. Bread awesome. Calamari average. My wifes chicken alfredo was great. My spaghetti and meatballs were terrific. Drinks great. Yes its in a Grocery store but wow, we will return!

Yelp
Easily the best, AUTHENTIC Italian restaurant around! This place is truly a hidden gem. The restaurant is on the side of Busch's Grocery Store and it's a 10/10 experience every time. Handmade pastas, high quality ingredients, and genuine Italian food. We always start with the Arugula Salad, and it's big enough to share with 3 people. The prosciutto, the Romano cheese, and balsamic are so perfect together, simple ingredients but so harmonious together. My boyfriend raves about the prosciutto quality it tastes very fresh and quality. The pastas are all handmade, we ordered the carbonara, the gemeli pesto pasta, the chicken Alfredo, and the owner Silvio was sweet enough to make a Cacio E Pepe even though it wasn't on the menu. All of the pastas we tried were incredible! This is the type of food where you don't feel terrible after eating because it's not processed fake food. We also came back to try their margherita pizza and I remembered that I forgot to write a review so I'll add that to this one... OH MY GOSH! Not to be dramatic but that was the best pizza I've had in a long time. It's Neapolitan style, so it's like a thin doughy consistency and everything tastes fresh, the tomato sauce the basil the mozzarella it's amazing. The service is ridiculously good every-time that I feel guilty that I didn't write this review sooner! Thank you Phil & Francesca for always welcoming us and being so sweet, and thank you Silvio for coming to say Hi to us and making me the cacio e pepe.

Yelp
I have found at the best Italian food comes from these Mom and Pop locations where the family lovingly creates old family recipes and offers these dishes proudly to their community. The national chains continuously fall short mainly because their choices are made by a corporate board and not by a family's favorite recipes. Silvio's Trattoria e Pizzeria is one of those restaurants that faithfully serve their community consistently good food in a warm and friendly environment. You honestly cannot go wrong with anything that you order here. The pizza is good, as are there more traditional Italian main course dishes. The next time that your family is craving you good Italian food, I would recommend driving right past Olive Garden, Carrabba's and all the other places and heading this way. You know your family will be sorry for this choice. Not only that, you will become a faithful and regular customer.

Yelp
Horrible service and terrible management. Second visit with mass disorganization of staff. It did not appear that there was a shortage of front of the house staff. It was that they were all stepping on each others toes and far from friendly or hospitable. The wait for food is unacceptable particularly when despite self righteousness of management (see next comment) the food is not up to par. This is a family run business which I respect. Apparently the owners daughter is the "manager". Don't even think about bringing a concern to her attention. You will be met with excuses, denial, unprofessional behavior and outright disrespect. Stay away.

Yelp
BRAVO!!! I've never had a more gastronomical celebration of flavors, Selections and creative dishes in my life. Although traffic and distance would slow me down, Silvio's will be a regular in our lives. The staff were incredibly attentive. The chef amazed us with his genius. I had the orange roughy special. A ricotta pie & Another amazing dessert...a light pizza filled with fruit , Nutella & custard. Wow
google avatar

Rashida K.

Yelp
I've eaten here a few times after shopping at Busch's grocery store since it's adjacent to the store. It's solid and the drinks are delicious. The server I always seem to get (Phil) is the friendliest guy ever and he does a really great job of being attentive but not overbearing. He makes this place special. I usually order the grilled lamb- cheese balls with sauce and the lemoncillo martini... and this is a nearly perfect meal ( just need to add a salad)
google avatar

Tanmay S.

Yelp
Silvio's is a family owned, authentic Italian restaurant that'll make you feel like you're at a trattoria in Italy.. such is the authenticity of the food. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating and make you feel at home. Their pastas, pizzas and lentil soup are out of this world! Shout out to Fran and Phil! If you're around canton, definitely worth checking out:..
google avatar

Karl H.

Yelp
I come here for the pizza, which has always been fantastic. However the past few times it seems like it is very understaffed. Most of the time, the waiters apologize but most recently a particular waiter (son in law of Silvio) was rude and it took over an hour to get our food. Can't justify coming back if the service is so poor.
google avatar

Dean M.

Yelp
This family owned and run Italian spot right next to Busch's has flavors that will make you think you're in Napoli... or maybe Brooklyn... or South Philly. No matter where you hail from, the menu cries out "Molto molto bene, mangiare!" Whether you dine in enjoy a fantastic selection of wines and well-stocked bar or take an order to go, you better stop looking and go here. Since moving back to Michigan from the East Coast, Philadelphia, the city certainly known for its Italian food and culture (there's a restaurant and every corner out there), I haven't had a chicken Parm that flight got it perfect. An Italian American classic, Silvio, Phil, and Fran have it spot on. If you're looking for something more traditional, the gnocchi and more than a few pizzas offer something authentically Italian. This is the place you are looking for. The burger is low key delicious too, just in case you're in the mood for one.

Yelp
Silvio's was practically an Ann Arbor landmark when I was in college. Wasn't too impressed with them back then, but now that they've followed me out to Canton, I decided to give them another try. So glad I did! We've both gotten take out and dined in over recent months, and it's become our go-to Italian restaurant. The food is made with care and curiosity (they have some really unique dishes like the blueberry pizza here as well as more traditional fare), and the service is the best I've had in a while. Favorites here include the truffle fries, meatballs, margherita pizza, and omg the arrosticini, which are little lamb skewers that they grill outside and come highly recommended if you are a meat-eater. Phil took amazingly good care of us when we dined in, too. Really bumped up the experience to a full five stars.

Yelp
It taste really good. Great food. It so many yummy pizza that I want to try it next time. Staffs was nice and friendly.

Yelp
We LOVED Silvio's!!! My husband was a bit apprehensive but since the reviews were really good we tried and... we both LOVED their food, wine, and service! I love their friendly service. They took time to explain food and wines. Everything is made from the scratch and I could really taste the quality of ingredients. We will visit soon with our friends. :) We highly recommend Silvio's!

Yelp
Was an outstanding dining experience. Amazing delicious food with excellent service, in an very nice environment. Absolutely a place for those who love homemade Italian cuisine. Will be back......

Yelp
Summary: Nice ambiance and good music don't make up for poorly prepared food. Ambiance: Canton is not a spot for trendy restaurants but Silvio's has a nice vibe with live jazz on the patio every Saturday and Sunday - very enjoyable environment - we'd actually only come to get groceries but the music and patio seating drew us in. Service: Service was good - nothing exceptional but nothing negative Appetizer: They provided bread with garlic basil olive oil that was quite nice - bread seemed fresh and was pretty tasty. Entree: We got the Margherita pizza thinking it is simple and reliable. Unfortunately it came out with half the pizza's bottom burnt - a little char is enjoyable, but this really was half the pizza. Further, the pizza was quite bland - the tomato sauce was lacking the fragrant, fresh flavor and chunkiness of San Marzano tomatoes and there was too little cheese, even for a Margherita. The crust, at least the parts that were not burnt was pretty good, light and airy internally with a nice crisp on the outside. Dessert: We had tiramisu which came nicely presented in a chalice of sorts and was tasty. Unclear if they used traditional Lady Fingers as the base, but all the components were there and it tasted good. We also had the vanilla Bomba which is a large donut like pastry filled with a vanilla custard. Unfortunately, it came out straight from the fridge and was actually quite cold which was unappetizing to start with and the custard was clearly broken/split making the texture pretty unappealing. Did not finish this. We were disappointed as the reviews were generally good and the atmosphere fun. We are unlikely to return, but if we do I may try the pasta instead.

Yelp
We ate here on Father's Day. We reserved a table that was ready when we arrived. Unfortunately, the restaurant had a few large parties, and they were backed up in the kitchen. We initially felt forgotten, but when management realized what had happened, they bent over backwards to make things right. Our food was hot and tasty when it arrived. All of the pasta was homemade. The whipped ricotta appetizer was amazing! And multiple managers came to apologize, brought us a free order of truffle fries, and desserts for six as well, all delicious and house-made. The chef himself came out to check on us. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious pizza, with dairy free and vegan cheese and gluten free pizza available as well. The combo of DF plus GF in a pizza is not easy to find, which is why I will drive 30 min there and back to pick up food. Salads are delicious - packed with veggies and olive slices. Kind people as well. I have not eaten in the restaurant but the look of it is very elegant and classy.

Yelp
So we heard Silvio's moved to Canton! Used to go to this place in Ann Arbor when we lived there. They had a great music scene, too bad that's probably not following them. They're in Busch's, probably replacing the smokehouse that was there. This is more accessible. Ordered online, went to the curbside and called. The guy brought it out shortly after, super safe. Threw in a free bag of biscotti too. Pizza was huge and really tasty, same as the one we used to order. Truffle pizza is so good! This biscotti was great too. They have pastas and other stuff like calzones, looking forward to trying these. This will be on our rotation for sure.

Yelp
Silvio is a native Italian who grew up in a family bakery. He runs the kitchen every day, while his daughter and her hubby run front-of-house. The food is all from scratch, and top notch. Worth a special drive, and if you live in the area, you should support regularly. A fine bar with excellent choice of draft beers, wine, and liquor, but not a craft cocktail scene. A true family-owned & -run restaurant, and a rare one with a full bar service. Join me in supporting this local jewel!

Matt S.

Yelp
Silvio's is our go to place for made from scratch authentic Italian. Honest and courtesy staff and management. Food and presentation always on point. And in the words of Joe Pesci from My Cousin Vinny " Everything that guy(Brett L.) said is b.s. thank you "

A T.

Yelp
The service here is Top Shelf and yet provides a hometown local feel. We had just left an awful experience trying out a new-to-us local restaurant in Canton. It was so bad we had to walk out. We found Silvio's (another new-restaurant-to-us). As soon as we sat down the power went out! The staff went directly into turning it into a candlelight service :). They stayed up beat and highly positive and this was close to closing. Gabby and Kennedy were outstanding!!! So was the rest of the staff! We will definitely be back!! As soon as we're about to leave the power came on! Life is funny sometimes!!

Phyllis M.

Yelp
Great place for indoor and outdoor dining, also happy to note they will be getting shades for blocking westerly facing side, shortly. Staff was friendly and extremely helpful with menu suggestions and explanations. Meals are reasonably priced with good sized portions, note that salads are a la carte, not part of pasta meals. They have a large selection of pizzas, calzones and pasta with a good selection of salads in various sizes( good portions for sharing) and a variety of dessert options. Fairly extensive drink menu with beer, wine and Mixed drinks. We had the Michigan ravioli, meatballs and meatballs eggplant. Parking is so easy as it is attached to the Busch's grocery store and shares the parking lot. Overall a very nice eating experience that we will come back and repeat.

Yelp
This place has a wonderful patio you can sit on when the weather is nice. The food was great I enjoyed a nice caprese salad and truffle mushroom pizza. It was yummy and Dawn was a great waitress. She was very attentive and friendly. Highly recommend this place. Great location and food.

Scott B.

Yelp
Disappointing. Absolutely fine, but nothing special. The waiter was exceptionally plugged in and was able to answer in depth questions, including what off menu things they would be willing to make for a diner. Very accommodating.
google avatar

Alyssa Z.

Yelp
Margarita pizza, bread, antipasto salad-10/10. Kennedy is a great waitress!!!!!!!!!!!

Keya D.

Yelp
Food was ok - nothing special. The alfredo tasted like mac and cheese. Wouldn't come back here again. Live music was good but wayyyyy too loud i couldn't think

Yelp
I've been to Silvio's Canton twice. The first visit was a good experience. The food and service were good. The second trip was horrible. After an hour-plus of waiting, we sat with no food and empty glasses. The server was inattentive and dismissive. When we informed him that we needed to leave to get to a show, he became defensive and combative. We paid our bar tab and left without eating. There are too few wait staff and they are poorly trained. Hopefully just growing pains for Silvio's.

Jeff B.

Yelp
Easily the worst pizza I have had. Picked up a large pepperoni to go last night when I got it home crust was soggy, cheese was runny and greasy. almost like it was undercooked. How can you call yourself an "Italian Restaurant" and can't make a decent pizza? so disappointed.
google avatar

Saadia A.

Yelp
Since moving to the area, I've been in search of a really good Italian restaurant. After reading rave reviews, I decided to give Silvio's a try and ordered carry out from here a few times. The first time I ordered pizza and a couple of sides, and it was decent but not as flavorful as I would have hoped. Since then I've tried a few pastas and their truffle fries (honestly, could probably eat these everyday) and those have been good. The cacio e pepe is a favorite of mine, a great comfort dish when I've got a pasta craving. It's not quite at the level of Italian food I was hoping to find, but there are definitely a few solid options to choose from on their menu.

Rene F.

Yelp
We have dined at Silvio's many times. Always a great meal! Today, I tried Carbonara for the first time. It was incredible! We've tried several dishes on their menu and never disappointed. If you are a pizza person, their pizza's are delicious. They take pizza to the next level. Family owned & run authentic Italian restaurant. It's wonderful to be able go into a restaurant & chat with the owners. Note: Do not pass on dessert!!!

Wendy B.

Yelp
This was our second attempt at Silvio's. The first time we ate inside. The food was not that good at all but we decided to try again with take out tonight. We got Arancini which was pretty bland and the marinara sauce was just OK. I got the Gorgonzola salad that looked good on the menu but was basically just mixed greens. The menu said it would have gorgonzola, asparagus, tomato, Kalamata olives, mushrooms, carrots and dried cherries. It had very little of each with mostly the carrots. Also, I was only given a small container of salad dressing which was not enough. I realize that everything is more expensive these days and I am OK with that. However, when I pay $15.00 for a dinner salad that ends up being little more than spring mix it is disappointing. My husband got the beef ravioli that was a very small portion and just OK for $18.00. They do not even offer you bread when you order pasta. This is probably the 3rd restaurant review I have ever done but I just had to say something because we decided to try Silvio's again due to the reviews on line.
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
Food was ok, nothing outstanding. Not much of an menu. Had the pasta but didn't get soup or bread with it like some other restaurants. I wish them good luck but will not return.

James G.

Yelp
After over 20 years in Ann Arbor, Silvio has made a serious upgrade! The food is pure homemade Italian food. Makes me feel like I'm sitting at someone's Italian home on Sunday after church. The food is so fresh and delicious. Hard to believe food of this quality is in a restaurant connected to a grocery store!! Sit back and enjoy good, real Italian cooking!

Gabi C.

Yelp
The food here is FANTASTIC! The fresh, organic ingredients create a wonderful burst of flavor that is unmatched. Very unique, tasty dishes. Great service from the staff (you can tell they work incredibly hard!) Beautiful, open space with lots of Covid-safe seating! Very clean and sophisticated feel throughout the restaurant. Definitely a must to visit and see Silvio's smiling face making your fresh meal! Such a wonderful family owned restaurant. You're in good hands here & they definitely know how to take care of their customers! Thanks Silvio & fam! Can't wait for my next visit
google avatar

Sunnye G.

Yelp
The food was overpriced and not fresh. It was not even warm. I did not like the pizza and the noodles were over cooked.

Tanaya D.

Yelp
I don't usually give a bad reviews to places but this place is not it. It's overpriced for the quantity of food. I was expecting good Italian food because its overpriced but was honestly was really disappointed. I think changing the price around to fit the description of food or just give more quantity like topping on a pizza should be taken into consideration.
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
Have now been here twice, and have been impressed by the quality. The pasta is fresh and tasty, and the service has been very good. The best Italian food I've found in the area by a wide margin
