Best Places to Dine in NoMa and Around Union Market | Eater DC

"This neighborhood cafe is the perfect spot to catch up with a friend or work remotely for hours, with delicious seasonal latte flavors, great scones and croissants, plus overstuffed breakfast sandwiches elevated with housemade fluffy focaccia and smoky red pepper salsa. If you really want to pretend you’ve been transported to France, order the Lyon and close your eyes as you chow down on delicious prosciutto di Parma, whipped butter, and sliced cornichons on a fresh baguette." - Emily Venezky

Where To Find To-Go Coffee While Coronavirus Limits Cafes - Eater DC

"The new NoMa cafe is still open for takeout and curbside pick-up (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.). In addition to drip coffees, lattes, and 32-ounce growlers of cold brew, there are biscuits, energy balls, and breakfast sandwiches. Sweet Science also accepts pre-orders on 12-ounce bags of Open Seas beans, roasted on Tuesday and ready for pickup on Fridays to Sundays." - Tierney Plumb

Sweet Science Coffee Opens a Gadget-Filled Cafe in NoMa - Eater DC

"Sweet Science Coffee has opened its first standalone shop in NoMa. The cafe differentiates itself from corporate coffee giants by slow-brewing craft coffee in eight distinctive devices and using both old-school and modern tools. The shop stocks five different coffees, rotating every three months, and features a three-seat 'slow bar' as the heart of the operation. The cafe also offers a pastry program and plans to add wine and craft beer to the menu. A second location in Arlington is expected by spring." - Lenore Adkins

Great place: friendly staff, good drinks, and excellent service. I loved the vibe in this café. It’s the kind of spot where you can read a book, work on your laptop, or meet up with friends. Jesse had a great attitude and made a perfect matcha. Thank you! The music selection was good, and the volume was just right. I usually leave cafés if the music is too distracting, but that definitely wasn’t the case here. This one’s officially on my list of favorite cafés and recommendations 🤍

Really lovely atmosphere and the taste of the coffee is great! I ordered and oatmilk latte which came to $7.15 pre-tip. I will say it felt a little overpriced and the service was subpar. Overall it is a good place to visit but not my favorite coffee shop experience.

Google
Stayed in DC a few days and this place was solid. Kids and I loved the chocolate croissants and this place knows how to make an actual cappuccino. No, it's not a place where you order one and they give you a latte no matter what you order. This place has great espresso. All about the beans and this place has em.

Clean, airy & bright cafe with warm service, conveniently located near Marriott Courtyard hotel. Very tasty buckwheat raspberry honey scone, decent egg & cheese sandwiches but wished they'd toast the bread & include a bit of greens. Coffee is ok but not our favorite, more of personal taste preference. Recommend people to try & check out the lovely atmosphere. We'll probably return for the scone but get our coffees/breakfast items elsewhere.

This is by far one of my favorite coffee spots in DC! The staff is always so great and respectful and the food is awesome as well. Whether it is to study, work, or catch up with a friend, I would highly recommend Simona Cafe!

Found this spot via google maps and was near the hotel during my stay in DC. A very spacious and beautiful place! I loved the decor and style. The person serving me was very welcoming and helpful, they eventually made my coffee. This place is card only and no cash. I opted for a cookie which was amazing and I appreciated the coffee cup! Very nice. I only deducted a star as my coffee was lukewarm otherwise a 5* establishment.

I found out about sweet science coffee in the daily coffee news. I realized I had to go and I walked over 40 minutes to get there and back. I would have walked much, much further. I have been to many coffee shops in many cities in the United States and most have pastries. This coffee shop pastries are beyond outstanding. So much so that I left with two bags of the pastries. Even if you are not a coffee drinker it's worth going simply for the pastries. They have two talented pastry chefs on-site and that makes all the difference. It is also my understanding that in the afternoon there is a different pastry offering which I have not yet had the pleasure of trying. When it comes to the coffee this is a very unique shop in that they have your typical espresso drinks but with very great coffees. In the multiple brewing area, which opens at 10:00 a.m. daily, those really interested exploring the limitless bounds of coffee flavors will be delighted with all the options. Hopefully, the photos will give you a good idea of the ever-changing coffee options and the available brewing methods. One of the very unique aspects of this coffee shop is that they determine which brew method is the best for a specific coffee and yes you should leave it to the professionals. I see this more and more at the better coffee shops where they will use the brew method that best suits the coffees flavor profile. You will have the opportunity to taste coffee flavors that you would never think are possible. Enjoy.

If you want to be mistreated while getting your morning cup of coffee this is the place for you. Only giving it 1 star because I have to & the coffee was decent. But This was easily one of the rudest experiences I’ve had at a coffee shop. Service was 0/5. From the moment we walked in, the energy was cold and unwelcoming. The man behind the counter just stared and did not initially greet us. & The cashier with the locs was even more nasty. She barely acknowledged us & truly made the whole interaction feel like a burden. I could tell she was irritated because my friend paid in cash. The look she gave her was extremely off putting while she was going through her wallet— and then was physically irritated because she asked for a Togo cup(it slipped her mind prior). My 2 other girlfriends decided to not purchase after that interaction & took their business to Peet’s down the street. What really got me is that once a line started forming, the cashier suddenly became upbeat and friendly. So the rude behavior wasn’t by accident—it was selective. If I’m paying nearly $8 for a cup of coffee, I expect decent service at the very least. The customer service here was disgusting & I’d never recommend anyone to come here. There are way too many amazing coffee shops in D.C. to waste time (or money) on this one.

Yelp
Cute cafe! Good amount of seats and they even have an outdoor patio, which will be amazing in the spring/summer. They have really good sandwich options. The menu was solid with some seasonal coffees too. I got the 5 spice chai and it was fantastic!! I also got a chocolate chip cookie that was super soft in the middle, it was perfect. Can't wait to come back here! Great for working.

Yelp
I wish I could give this spot a 4 and a half. Decor wise it is nice, very airy, lots of plants, and just a nice vibe! It is also very spacious with lots of nooks. The coffee was good. The Iced latte was smooth and delicious. I got the NOVA. The smoked salmon on it was good. The bread was delicious. The ricotta was creamy. I like how it is reminiscent of the classic bagel, lox, and cream cheese; hitting the red onion element with pickled red onion, the cheese element and the lemon with lemon ricotta but with some heat and adding some pizazz. For my taste, if it is open-faced I expected two pieces of bread. It was a little small for my taste/expectations. Don't get me wrong though, the cheese is so good and it is an excellent sandwich.

Yelp
I walk past this spot every morning and decided to try their food. i always try to support local but I was disappointed in the service which made the food even worse. paid $14 and added tip to the nice barista but did not expect to wait 20 minutes for an egg sandwich at 9:10am. no apologizes for the wait time other than it will be a minute to cook their eggs not a bad spot though if you wanna look cool sitting in the cafe and have nothing else to do other than watch hipsters come in and out i am spoiled i should have went back to uptown cafe for real food and coffee take notes if you wanna a good cafe experience worth the price in DC Lot38 in the Navy yard

Yelp
Super cute cafe! Off the beaten path but worth it to visit. I tried the breakfast loaf which was filled with nuts, carrots and other goodies. I also got an almond milk latte which was very good! The service was great, super friendly staff. They have a nice indoor and outdoor seating area. A a nice touch they have beautiful fresh floral arraignments on the tables.

Yelp
A really pleasant find in the NOMA area. In a kind of "blink and you miss it" stretch of street, this cute shop really has a lot to offer. I stepped in for what I intended to be a quick cup of coffee, and ended up staying a while. The bright shop was very comfortable and welcoming on even a bleak cloudy day. I am a fan of smaller menus that focus on doing certain things really well. Their aeropress coffee was very well made and ratioed, and the flavor was perfectly balanced. I was intrigued by their in-house blended cacao for the mochas, which was also incredibly good. The pastries and croissants are also very very good. There is a small menu for food if you want something a little more substantial. Staff was very friendly, and the shop definitely deserves a return visit.

Yelp
What a cute space. I met some friends here at around 10am on a Saturday, and it wasn't too busy. The space gets a good amount of natural light so that's always fun. I ordered a chai latte and it was everything I wanted it to be. They also have a non-gendered restroom which is always a plus for me.

Yelp
Popped into Simona after a walk with a large group of people. They handled the rush and pre order of all our coffees well. The service and kind and as quick as they could be which I appreciate. It is on the pricer side, my small vanilla latte was $7.50. It was a good latte, but definitely a bit pricey. The vibes are nice on the inside and a good place to come down work or chat with friends. I plan to come back and try some of their food items!

Yelp
Cozy and cute little cafe in the Noma neighborhood. The bread loaf is full of raisins and nuts and tastes really good. I ordered it with a decaf coffee which pairs very well with it. The wifi is free and it is the strongest in the middle of the cafe, next to the dishes and utensils. section.

Yelp
Simona Cafe offers a nice variety of menu that includes coffee, wine, and food. They have another location out in Arlington, but this space is much larger with ample seating. I had the NOVA, which was an open-faced focaccia topped with smoked salmon, lemon ricotta, smokey red pepper salsa, pickled onions, and arugula - this was really tasty, and I really liked the creamy lemon ricotta as it added a nice freshness to it. I didn't mind the smokey red pepper salsa this time around, as I felt it complemented all the other toppings. Note that everything is made-to-order, so you may wait a few, depending on the queue. Staff were super friendly, kind, and welcoming! There are limited metered and restricted street parking in the area. +yummy NOVA +friendly service +ample seating inside +plenty of metered and restricted street parking in the area

Yelp
Transitioning from Sweet Science to Simona, molecule art still decorates the floor of this cafe in NoMa. Find street parking nearby and bring your laptop. There's strong wifi, tables, and outlets. They brew a full coffee menu, including seasonal lattes. My pumpkin brown sugar latte was excellent- creamy and flavorful. Their chocolate croissant is very soft and delicious! (I appreciate a non-dry pastry.) They also have a breakfast menu of hearty and light dishes. Service was excellent- kind and efficient.

Yelp
Sweet Science is now Simona cafe in Noma and I went to check it out for some coffee on a Sunday morning. As this was my first time there, I am unclear if they have the same staff or new staff but the cashier seemed new to the system but was very nice and patient as I figured out what to order. For my order, I decided to try the drip coffee and a decaf almond milk lavender latte. I do not like overly sweet drinks and walked up as they were finishing my latte to mention this and they said they use a standard ounce (not pumps) in the drinks and let me taste to confirm if I liked it. I took a sip and immediately it was the sweetest drink I've ever had and terrible. They kindly made me a new latte with half or less sweetness and it was way better. Def recommend asking for less sweetener if ordering a flavored beverage! I would come back if I was walking around the neighborhood but it isn't really a comfy and cozy coffee shop you post up in beyond finishing your coffee and breakfast (although there is free WiFi). I'm sure this is by design but none of the chairs are cushioned or anything. Since I didn't try any food, I would also come back for that.

Yelp
Very, very good coffee. I get my beans here because they have a nice rotating selection. I have been a fan since this was Sweet Science. The staff are nice and generally knowledgeable. They seem pretty relaxed, so I figure the job isn't soul sucking. The place is big and has WiFi, so it's a great place to post up with a laptop. I haven't seen it super busy, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a table. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of parking nearby, so if you're driving, you should plan for a quick pickup while your hazards are on.

Yelp
Recently opened following the Arlington location's move from Sweet Science to Simona. The coffee and options appear to be similar, with more options for food. We come for the espresso/lattes and the espresso tonic drinks - 5 stars for them. Espresso is very smooth, not bitter. They use crushed ice. 3-4 stars for the other stuff I've tried - the regular drip which tastes almost watery (but I'm not a big coffee drinker). Also had a breakfast focaccia sandwich which was decent but needs some tweaks especially at $14 - the focaccia is pretty thin and heated up gets a bit crispy, not as much of the pillowy focaccia feel. The scrambled eggs were overdone and could've benefitted from butter and salt. The guanciale was a paper thin slice that was barely discernible, the pepper salsa also didn't come through that much. Some minor updates and the sandwiches would benefit greatly

Yelp
My friend and I got an iced oatmilk vanilla latte. I didn't order oatmilk but that's what he heard and I don't have issues with oatmilk so I just drank it. It was pretty good! The inside is cute, I would come back to meet up with someone! Staff was super friendly as well.

Yelp
I love Simona in Arlington so was excited to get another chance to have it, this time in noma! I came early Wednesday morning about 30 minutes after they opened. It was pretty quiet so I decided to eat there. I got an iced coffee with milk and a chocolate croissant. The employees were so friendly and welcoming, and I love when cafes have actual plates and mugs for customers that eat there. My iced coffee was great and my chocolate croissant was delicious! So warm and soft. I like that each table has a little flower pot which has the Wi-Fi password listed. It makes it convenient to not get up to find the password at the counter or asking someone. Their fall specialty drinks looked good too, especially the brown sugar pumpkin. I hope to come back and try it before it's gone!

Yelp
Stopped here with a friend on a recent trip since it was right across the street from our hotel. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with no bread and the barista generously gave me extra to make up for the lack of bead. I didn't think the coffee was great but my friend loved it. A little bit pricey

Yelp
One of the few indie coffee shops in NoMa, Simona is a cute place with all of your favorite espresso drinks. It feels cozy and welcoming, but this is one of those spots that values the ambiance over the quality of the food and drink. There's a limited selection of pastries, and none of them look especially appetizing. I got a gingerbread latte, and while it was not bad, the coffee flavor didn't really shine and I didn't sense the notes of nutmeg/cinnamon/ginger that you expect with gingerbread. But if you're a NoMa resident, it's worth trying!

Yelp
Such a cute spot with friendly service and talented baristas. My half-sweet vanilla latte was made PERFECTLY. The ambiance is lovely as well.

Yelp
Espresso macchiato with almond milk was good, but the almond milk is sweetened, FYI (I prefer unsweetened). Latte with oat milk was pretty light but had good thickness and frothiness. The zucchini/carrot/walnut bread was good, sweet and very moist. Service was excellent.

Yelp
I found this place on Yelp and it was just a block from my hotel. I went yesterday for breakfast and liked it so much that I had to go back today. The best breakfast sandwich I have ever had!

Yelp
Brilliant little coffee shop tucked away in NoMA. It's a great place to study or work for a bit and enjoy a coffee and bite.

Yelp
Great little spot in the NoMa area, came in on a Saturday morning wasn't too busy, it's a perfect quiet spot to read/study/work! Cool minimalist vibe to it, coffee was good, but the scrambled eggs sandwich was not something usually I see in breakfast places so I give it a shot and it was amazing!! Guys working there were really pleasent and friendly too! Cool place overall

Austin B.

Yelp
Friendly staff and a clean environment! The Wilson sandwich was a delight first thing in the morning.
