The 38 Best Restaurants in Calgary, Canada - Eater

"At this popular restaurant tucked just off of the 17th Avenue main strip, co-owners Fay and Pat Bruney serve a range of Jamaican specialties: patties filled with ground goat, beef, or chicken, braised oxtail and beans, roti, curried goat, and, of course, jerk chicken. For dessert, try the gizzada, a pastry shell stuffed with a mix of spiced coconut and sugar. Simply Irie’s patio is a great spot to have a casual bite and enjoy a rum-based cocktail or two in the summer. [$-$$]" - Dan Clapson

Google
I have been looking for a great Jamaican Patty for a long time now. It's been a long road since my days enjoying them at the Deli in UBC. When I visited, they were sadly out of Beef Jamaican Patties, so I got their Goat Jamaican Patty. The filling was the best that I had in town. The flavors were balanced, and the texture was just right. The crust was flakey and complimented the filling perfectly. I look forward to trying their beef Jamaican patty in the future

We ordered from Simply Caribbean for my dad’s celebration of life. He was from Trinidad and this was one of his fave places. Faye is amazing and friendly. The food is just like my dad and his mom made! Everything was fresh and perfect! We have nothing bad to say! It is a true taste of the Caribbean. Thank you for making my dad’s celebration of life PERFECT! See you soon.

CHEFS KISS. so delicious. staff were so kind and wonderful. The patty was AMAZING. jerk chicken and oxtail stew were to die for. 1st time but won’t be my last. (pepper sauce was the best sauce i’ve had in my life, it’ll be in my dreams)

I tried ordering a week ago and had difficulty with one of the staff, she told me nothing was gluten free however it is clearly advertised that they have many gluten free options. . I am a celiac so definitely needed to confirm what I was ordering was Gluten Free and would be prepared safely. I reached out on Facebook and got a proper response. Tonight I was able to order through Uber the food was flavourful and we have leftovers. Excellent portions, delicious flavours. Fantastic customer service from the Owner. You must try the oxtail. The curry chicken is also enjoyable along with the jerk chicken. Yes, all gluten free along with the rice and beans and Coleslaw. Thank you : )

Located in downtown Calgary, Simply Irie is a pleasant little restaurant that brings a taste of vibrant Caribbean culture to Alberta. From the bright white and yellow interior, to their friendly staff, right of the bat you’ll notice how welcoming the restaurant is. The atmosphere inside is really great, although, I do wish they played more Caribbean music! Their menu is also rather large compared to other Caribbean restaurants I’ve visited in North America. To start, my friends and I tried the Jamaican Patty and the Chicken Roti. I really enjoyed the Jamaican Patty actually, it was a little different compared to the more common yellow patties. The Chicken roti was not bad as well, the curry flavour was great. For entrees, we ordered the large Oxtail and large Jerk Chicken Platters. Both plates were huge, tasty, and cooked to perfection. The oxtail was beyond tender, and the jerk chicken was moist. My only problem was that I just felt like in both the oxtail and jerk chicken, they used way too much browning. I found that the gravy/sauce in both dishes were rather sweet and not as savoury or spicy as most other oxtail and jerk chicken dishes I have tried. The rice and peas was delicious, but I even felt like the overly sweet gravy took away from the flavour of the rice. It’s by no means horrible, but it’s not my preferred flavour profile. Another thing to note is that there food takes a little while to be prepared. I’ve actually dined in and grabbed take out from them, and on both occasions I felt like the food took longer than expected. Overall, considering it’s tough to find great Caribbean cuisine in western Canada — I would still totally check Simply Irie to explore more of their menu and enjoy a taste of the tropical islands. 🏝

So good! Had such a great experience here. Restaurant is bright and clean. Staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The starters were delicious! The dumplings we crispy, but not greasy. The doubles were my favorite! Full of flavor could have eaten more of them. Plantain was really good. I then had the goat curry which was tender and full of flavor. Cannot wait to go back and try everything else. Photos do not do this place justice...just go!

Google
Best food I have ever had in my entire life! The food was perfect, the jerk chicken, stewed beef, curry chicken, fries, I tell you. Everything. The food looked good, smelled amazing, and tasted out of this world!! Not to mention the super awesome service!! The entire staff was so kind and great at communicating! The owner was also the literal sweetest! She was so welcoming and friendly, and made the already warm atmosphere even more warm. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This review is based solely on their doubles. Been craving doubles and I've been searching all over Calgary for somewhere that makes it. This place luckily offers it and they're delicious; incredibly fluffy and packed with flavour. The catch is that it's expensive. Doubles in Toronto is only $3 each and this place is $9. Although they're slightly bigger at 6", it's a huge jump! Seems like a popular spot for locals to grab takeout, but there are a few bar stools to eat in if you wish!

Yelp
Bland soggy jerk chicken. Pretty sure they just cook it in the oven which is NOT jerk chicken. Should at least be cooked over charcoal. The fried dumplings are as hard as life. Not impressed. Will continue to just cook it for myself and eat it when I go to Toronto. It's strange why all the jamaican spots here suck. There is literally no good places for it in Calgary.

Yelp
Extremely expensive for the quality & quantity of what you get. The oxtail @ beef taste exactly the same & is super salty. Not a place to really sit down to eat.

Yelp
Been looking around downtown for a caribbean place to eat that's nearby home and found this spot. I ordered some fried dumplings and oxtail stew with the rice and peas because that's the best way to go imo. I haven't had caribbean food in a hot minute and this spot hit all the right places. Fried dumplings were nice and hot, the oxtail stew had me kicking my feet from tasting so damn good. The food here has that homey vibe to it which I look for in a lot of the places my partner and I venture off to. I also got a beef patty; hands down one of the best beef patty's I've had in a while it took everything in me to save some for my partner. Thank you Fay for creating such an amazing first time experience here for me; service was impeccable and will definitely be visiting this spot more frequently.

Yelp
Spicy Beef Patty ($5.25), Goat Patty ($6.25), Akee and Saltwater Fish Patty ($7.95), Jerk Chicken with White Rice ($16.95), and Oxtail Stew with Traditional Rice and Peas ($23.95). The pastry in the patties is phenomenal. The patties look thin but when you bite into it, you can taste a million light, crisp layers. The beef patty was the most mild in flavour whereas the goat patty had stronger flavour and aroma. I loved the subtle saltiness of the fish. There was so much meat was on the chicken. Judging from the size, Simply Irie uses big ass birds. The sauce was lovely, though I couldn't pick out the seasoning and spices. This was my first time trying oxtail stew. My container was filled with meaty chunks of tender meat. To me, oxtail taste like a hybrid between a beef rib and tendon. I liked nibbling around the bone to get to the gelatinous bits. The gravy was saucy, and a little sweet. I thought the prices were very reasonable given the portions, quality, and location. I actually think the entrees at Simply Irie offer more value than many of their neighbouring restaurants.

Yelp
Best Jamaican Jerk Chicken in town, and incredibly sweet, polite workers. I ordered chicken, steamed veggies and veggie patties to go, and the lady gave me a complementary butternut squash soup. I had to come back the next day for more. I'd come here every day if I lived in Calgary

Yelp
I tried their large spicy chicken chickpea roti at their former location on the corner of 14 Street SW and 17th Avenue SW; it was very good. The restaurant was simply decorated and the server was very nice. However, I found the overall prices for a drink, Roti and dessert quite expensive which is too bad. It spoiled the dining experience for me so I have not returned even to their new location. I hope they have adjusted their prices as they could do a really good business otherwise.

Yelp
Amazing food! My hubby, daughter and I had oxtail with rice & peas and coleslaw. Every bit was delicious. Oxtail was so soft and tasty. One of the best I've had in my life including in Jamaica and Toronto. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
We had the oxtail plate & the jerk chicken plate, both w/ rice & peas, + the fried plantain. Everything was top notch. 100% we'll be back.

Yelp
Hubby picked the place to eat and it was amazing. Ox tail dish was filling, the meat just fell of the bone tasted great. Kids had the patties and they had two each.

Yelp
Pretty good, I'll be going back to explore the menu more. had jerk chicken, not hot enough, will try again along with some other stuff, definitely want to try the roti

Yelp
Just had a wonderful sample of beef stew, jerk chicken and the curry goat all served over rice and coleslaw. Wonderful flavours and spices, perfect meal for a snowy night. I highly recommend this wonderful local restaurant. Everyone is very friendly. Barb

Yelp
If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! This is the place to go if you love Caribbean food! I had their patties and jerk chicken, which was just as good as the quality Caribbean food I have had in the past. If you have great memories of Jamaican parties, this will bring it all back! There is a great atmosphere to the restaurant as well and I love walking by it and noticing those cooking smells coming from the kitchen!

Yelp
Great Caribbean food, with excellent service (especially during Covid-19). I came early and the woman handling the front of house told me they were out of the beef patty's I had ordered, she recommend the goat patty ( which was delicious would recommend over the beef as well) and comped us an extra one. It's nice seeing black owned businesses in Calgary, it feels good to see other black people enjoying a local spot with killer food. Would recommend the oxtail, jerk wings with the pepper sauce, and the rum balls. New location is very nice done and larger.
