I love-love-love meeting people who love what they do. It's rare. Unfortunately, not everyone has found a way to turn their personal passions into a career. It isn't easy, it probably isn't practical, and you probably won't make a million bucks doing it unless you're incredibly lucky. Anyway, it's exciting to find folks who have made it work somehow, and that's what I ran into at SiNaCa Studios.
The awesome people who built and run this amazing organization on Magnolia would be so stoked if you stopped by to check out their space. It's a unique facility that offers classes, workshops, and demonstrations in glassblowing, kiln-formed glass, and flameworking. There are not many glassblowing studios in general, and certainly not many in Texas (you'll find more on the coasts). I'm so impressed by the quality and character of SiNaCa. I took glassblowing for a couple of years in college at UTA, and while I'm no expert in any sense (I don't possess any 3D art skills and I am afraid of lava), I do have some knowledge of what a well-run glassblowing facility should look like, and SiNaCa studios is just fantastic (and pretty damn big for being a local non-profit business).
If you've ever had any interest in working with glass, you have to come see this place. You can watch demonstrations (which is fascinating), or you can sign up to work with glass yourself at very reasonable prices. Maybe you've never created any type of art before. Maybe you've never pictured yourself working with glowing, molten glass that's hotter than the fires of Mordor. It's never too late! SiNaCa works with everyone from total neophytes to established glass artists. You'll be taken care of, safe, and have the chance to do something that not many do.
SiNaCa also brings in glass artists from around the nation to further expose our community to this wonderful art form. Check out their website or facebook page to see a calendar of events. Currently, they host Open Studio Nights after hours where you can watch some glass work happen and BYOB. Always something cool coming to you from this studio! And, of course, they have a gallery space where they display and sell some of their gorgeous creations, made by local glass artists!
