10 of the world’s quietest places for a dose of calm - SilverKris

"One of the last relatively untouched tropical rainforests and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this remote reserve is a biodiversity hotspot bordered by the Koskulana Ganga and Gin Ganga rivers and reachable only on foot with an accredited guide. Hikes reveal endemic flora and fauna—including elusive Sri Lankan leopard, purple‑faced langur, toque macaque and rare butterflies—making it a hushed, species-rich destination for committed nature lovers. The requirement to be accompanied by a park ranger preserves both safety and the quiet, focused experience of the forest." - Tamara HinsonandErica Fong

One of the most endangered biological reserves in Sri Lanka. Untouched rainforest area with a great amount of endemic species of Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. Hiking and range area.

We entered from the Deniyaya side, and it was a wonderful experience—perfect for those who love being close to nature. You may need to park your vehicle at the designated parking area and take a paid shuttle to the entrance, as the road conditions aren't great. The washroom at the entrance was very clean. Don't forget to wear leech socks—there are many leeches in the area.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Sri Lanka’s most significant tropical rainforest, known for its rich biodiversity and high endemism. Covering approximately 11,187 hectares, it is home to rare flora and fauna, including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, purple-faced langur, and green pit viper. The dense forest has a humid climate, making it a hotspot for researchers and nature lovers. Main Entry Points: 1. Deniyaya Entrance – Popular for access to Patna Forest Reserve and Mulawella Trail. 2. Kudawa Entrance (Weddagala) – The most commonly used entrance, leading to Sinhagala Trail and birdwatching areas. 3. Pitadeniya Entrance – Provides access to waterfalls like Duvili Ella and deeper parts of the forest. Each entrance offers unique experiences, from birdwatching to waterfall hikes and deep jungle trails.

Best place in Srilanka to study the bio-diversity. It is home to hundreds of Endemic plants and animal which you can not watch anywhere else in the world. Highly recommended to take the assistance of registered forest tour guide. There are beautiful waterfalls hidden inside the forest. If you wish you can take a swim at crystal clear water on Gin river. Do not forget to wear leach socks when you explore the forest.

A Hidden Gem of Biodiversity Sinharaja Forest is nothing short of a paradise for nature lovers! If you have a passion for birds and lizards, this place will absolutely enchant you. As I walked through the lush trails, I was surrounded by a vibrant ecosystem filled with unique endemic species that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. Wildlife Paradise: The variety of birds was astonishing! I saw colorful species flitting through the trees, and the sound of their calls added to the enchanting atmosphere. The lizards, with their bright colors and interesting behaviors, made for great photo opportunities. However, if you're expecting large wildlife like in the African savannah, you’ll need to adjust your expectations. Stunning Scenery: The forest is rich with hidden waterfalls that create a serene backdrop. I took a refreshing swim in the Gin River, and the crystal-clear water was simply divine. It felt rejuvenating, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature. Guided Experience: I highly recommend hiring a registered forest tour guide. Their knowledge added immense value to my experience, as they pointed out various species of plants and animals that I would have otherwise overlooked. Their passion for the forest was infectious. Preparation Tips: A must-do is to wear leach socks! It made my exploration much more comfortable, as leeches can be quite prevalent in wet areas. Conclusion: If you’re a nature enthusiast or just looking for a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle, Sinharaja Forest should definitely be on your travel list. It’s a treasure trove of biodiversity that left me in awe. I can’t recommend it enough!

A Must-Visit Tropical Paradise: Sinharaja Forest Reserve Sinharaja Forest Reserve is an absolute gem for anyone passionate about nature and adventure. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a pristine rainforest that offers a truly immersive experience. The moment you step into the forest, you’re greeted by the sound of rustling leaves, chirping birds, and the occasional call of monkeys. One of the highlights of my visit was the exceptional guides with enormous knowledge. They provided fascinating insights into the forest's rich biodiversity and pointed out species I would have never noticed on my own. From rare endemic species of plants and animals to vibrant insects and spiders, every moment was a discovery. The forest teems with life, including colorful lizards, elusive reptiles, and even tiny frogs hiding under leaves. Watching birds flutter through the canopy and spotting playful monkeys swinging between trees was unforgettable. The well-maintained trails lead to picturesque waterfalls, where you can pause and soak in the tranquility. Along the way, you’ll also cross scenic bridges that add a touch of adventure to the journey. I highly recommend a full-day tour to truly appreciate this natural wonder. Sinharaja Forest Reserve is not just a destination; it’s a journey into the heart of nature's beauty. Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone looking to connect with the natural world.

A great experience. A lot of leeches live there, so you need to bring something to distract them. You must take a guide with you. A guide charges around 2500 Rs for a 2-3 hour walk through the forest. They show some places like waterfalls and trees, but you will miss 98% of the wonders. To see more, you need to venture deeper into the forest, which is challenging due to the leeches, poisonous snakes, spiders, and rocks. However, you can hire a guide for around 8000 Rs to explore deeper into the forest and see rare plants, birds, insects, mammals, waterfalls, and some viewpoints. (You must hire a guide before entering the jungle. If you are caught without a guide, you will face a fine of around 15,000 Rs.) *** I entered to the forest from Neluwa entrance... but I prefer you the Deniyaya entrance.
