The 16 Essential Sardinia Restaurants

"Gergei, population 1,300, is a quiet town about an hour north of Cagliari. It was put on the map by the Lai family when they opened Domu Antiga, a boutique hotel in the center of town that quickly became a hot spot for visitors looking for rural charm and a break from the beach. In 2022, the family inaugurated their newest venture, a small cheese-making and tasting space called Sinnos. Samuel Lai and his team make sheep’s cheese in a tiny stone storefront beside his home and offer pecorino tastings in the pretty courtyard in the back that is planted with a manicured vegetable garden." - Katie Parla

We read about Sinnos in Eater's 2023 "Places to Travel" and it lived up to our expectations! We enjoyed the thoughtful tour of the facilities, seeing all of the different cheeses, and hearing about the family's passion. The cheeses were some of the best we've ever had. The jams, vegetables, and herbs were also so fresh and delicious. We purchased multiple cheeses to take back to the states. We highly recommend this experience!

Very informative tour on cheese-making in Sardegna. The tour cost €25 per person (in 2023) and includes a tour of the facilities and an explanation of the process, and tasting of 8 different (and delicious) cheese. The owner also shared with us a special wine that his family produces, which was a nice touch.

We did a cheese tasting with Samuel and had a wonderful experience! He taught us about the different types of cheeses they produce and their production and aging methods. The quality and craftsmanship of the their production is very clear. After our tour we did a tasting in their garden which was beautiful and the cheese was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend making a stop here during your travels!

We were so fortunate to be able to reserve last minute this wonderful experience at Sinnos. Samuel was very welcoming and charming. He not only gave us a tour of his property and cheese making facility, he shared with us his family history relating to cheese making and the reasons he felt strongly to come back to his roots to continue the tradition. Accompanied by a lovely glass of wine produced by his brother, fruits from the garden and delicious jams made by Samuel’s wife, we tasted a lovely array of 8 cheeses including a new creation of Samuel’s. Everything tasted delicious and of course… we HAD TO BUY MORE to have on the boat for the remainder of our trip. GREAT EXPERIENCE!

what an experience! we loved the traditional cheese making course and really immersed in learning about how to make ricotta and pecorino! the young family renovated the place with an eye for detail and you can definitely feel the passion for cheese making here and how they care for sustainable, high quality, local and seasonal produce! the cheese tasting was delicious.

We were able to easily arrange a tour and tasting via email. The tour was very informative. We had a delicious tasting of several types of cheese, fresh local bread, a glass of wine, produce right from their garden, and spreads made by the owner's wife. After the tasting we bought several cheeses from the shop and also some yarn for knitting from their sheep. Thank you for a great experience!

This shop is beautiful, and the cheeses are phenomenal. If you can, make the time for a cheese tasting. We didn’t get to do this formally but Samuel showed us his property and let us sample several cheeses. Even this was a stand out moment of our trip. Samuel seems to be a real visionary in the Sardinian natural cheese space. He also has a keen design eye and a thoughtful approach to tourism in Sardinia. Getting to spend time with him and hear his thoughts about all of this was a highlight of our Sardinia trip. To top it all off, the cheese just happened to be outstanding. This is definitely worth any detour on the island.
