A quaint little cafe that specialises in local cuisine with a modern twist. Friend recommended this place and I visited with him even though I wasn't particularly craving Asian food that day; and I'm glad I did.
We had the Nasi Lemak set for 2, which came with pork cutlet, fishballs in sambal, and a selection of their side dishes (luncheon crisps, har cheong gai wings, rojak, nyonya curry with potatoes) served as small plates to accompany the rice. The rice was fragrant and cooked to a peranakan style, yet wasn't too intense and had a somewhat 'sophisticated' flavour to it. Everything was delicious and at a price of $28 for 2, this was a steal considering the locale and that the rice and sambal was free flow.
I also had the crab wantons which, while expensive at $1/piece, had actual pieces of sweet crabmeat in them that worked well with the sweet chilli sauce they were served with.
For drinks, I was recommended the Sng Muay Pop which was exactly as the waiter described, cooling and refreshing. It's an interesting take on the traditional iced kalamansi drink you can get at coffee shops as it adds sprite to the mix which introduced a citrusy flavour and carbonation that made the beverage that much better.
Finally, I finished off with their 'most famous cake', the Gula Melaka. It's sweet but not overdone and was moist in the middle, layered with gula melaka fudge and sponge cake.
It's been a while since I awarded a 5-star rating to any eatery but this place definitely deserved it. Service was great as well, despite the fact that at its peak, only 2 waiters serviced the restaurant, including having to conduct temperature checks for those waiting to enter and enforce safe distancing measures. I will definitely be returning, although with a reservation next time.
