The Best Ethiopian Food in Portland | Eater Portland

"While Sisters doesn’t offer an extensive menu, it more than makes up for it with the amount of flavor packed into each dish. The restaurant’s veggie combo is an excellent way to try both its spicier misir wot, creamy with red lentils, and the mild alicha kik, sunny with yellow split peas. A rich take on minchet abish is another strong option." - Eater Staff

The Best Restaurants in East Portland | Eater Portland

"East Portland is home to many residents from East Africa, which means it’s not hard to find Ethiopian food. Mill Park’s Sisters offers a casual sit-down experience with comfy booths and a tight menu. While much of Ethiopian cuisine is vegan-friendly, Sisters also offers beef and lamb in the form of tibs, a spicy stew seasoned with berberé, as well as kifto, a raw minced beef dish similar to steak tartare. Those looking to feed a few can go for a combo, an assortment of some of the restaurant’s best dishes." - Rebecca Roland

Immediately adding to these positive reviews. The food was incredible. We had the veggie combo and the lamb tibs. The lamb tibs were spectacular. Rich, deep flavor, perfectly cooked meat. We ordered it spicy and did not regret it. The Injera is so wonderfully tangy. I could eat plates of it by itself! The veggie combo was delicious, every option was extremely flavorful and different from the other. The person who helped us was very friendly and welcoming. There is lots of off-street parking. It appeared to be ADA accessible. There are no steps at the entrance and plenty of wheelchair accessible tables. The bathroom was also large enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Take out available (I happened to see an order be lovingly packed and brought out to the car.) Highly recommend!!!!!

Google
Wow. The food is amazing! Perfectly cooked. It's an absolute experience to eat this. I wish I had gotten a picture before we cleaned the plate. I will absolutely come back. Good drinks too.

Google
Sisters is my new favorite restuarant. Is it fancy? No. But the lamb tibs (extra spicy of course) is one of the best meals in the city. The Injera is nice and tangy, the lamb is tender, the broth is delicious. Seriously, go to sisters.

Google
Friendly and welcoming owners/service. Food is very tasty. I mostly get the veggie combo which is hard not to stop eating! I often eat the whole thing in one go but it's more like 2 meals if I had more self control. The incense smell is a bit strong at times so it can be hard to eat in if you're sensitive to the smell.

Google
Went here tonight for my 32nd birthday with a group of five people. It was all of our first time trying Ethiopian cuisine. We all loved it, the spices , flavors, service and the chef came out and greeted us. The experience alone is unforgettable, definitely best birthday dinner yet. Thank you guys so much ! We will be back soon, and I will recommend it to others.

Google
Wonderful host, and such flavorful food! We had such a great experience, and the kids loved it! We got the sister's special combo and the lamb tibs.. enough to feed all four of us. 10/10!

Google
Very solid restaurant! The menu is small, but the 4 entrees we had were all great. The Injera (sponge bread) was a little plain tasting, lacking the distinctive "sour" notes from good fermentation, but it had a great texture. All the entrees were delicious. Great service.

Google
Found this place searching for Ethiopian restaurants 4.5 or higher rating, open on a Tuesday. I personally could care less about the atmosphere, as long as it's clean. Food, service, and company of a friend are why I go out to eat; definitely between 4.5 and 5. 👍 Food was fast and fairly fresh tasting. The service was excellent. Kind & friendly waiter. Informative and helpful for first-timers. I bet this business would be much busier if it were in a better location, better signage, better seating. Ordered Vegetable plate, and lamb tibs, family style.

Yelp
My cultures food is delicious. Come eat at this restaurant in Portland. Doro Wat is amazing with wonderful spicy flavors! Also we got the special combo! The server was so nice and kind. Thank you this food experience!

Yelp
Super welcoming!! They take pride in their food and it felt like a great homemade meal. The lamb was rich, buttery, and spicy! The lentils from the veggie combo were so flavorful and filling. I tasted the TEJ (honey wine) the first time. I'm not sure how it is supposed to be but I would've liked it chilled. It looks empty and maybe not on the best side of town, but don't be alarmed. Go in and try it because you will be pleased!!!

Yelp
Coming here is like visiting family and friends, the atmosphere is so welcoming and the owners so warm and caring, it really feels like you are the guest of honor! Then comes the absolutely most amazing food I have ever had!! I cannot give this enough stars and recommendations! Do not hesitate come enjoy the best meal of your week!!

Yelp
Have never eaten Ethiopian food before today. This was quite a surprise for both of us. Different lentils, and beets. No utensils are needed as it's served with a grey sponge like bread that one uses to scoop up the food. No meat was involved in this meal, I really didn't miss it. Our server was very friendly and helpful as we were first timers. Decor was lacking, but didn't care because it's about the food. There are several dishes on the menu that offer chicken and lamb, maybe next time, we will definitely be back.

Yelp
Beautiful and well spiced food. Delicious and authentic. Clean and well decorated. Friendly service.

Yelp
My girl loves Ethiopian food, and her usual haunt went downhill so we're always on the lookout for a replacement. We're not often this far east, but since we had an errand out there and were hungry we found Sisters. Sisters is bare bones in terms of atmosphere, but still homey. If you're a fan of "ethnic" cuisine from more newly immigrated cultures, you know that that often means the food will be authentic and delicious. Sisters is no exception, out meal was excellent. The highlight was the kai wat, the beef stew. The spice profile was awesome. Our usual order is the veggie assortment and one meat dish, and the veggies were solid though we missed the salad and other options like beets. Staff was super friendly and welcoming. We'll be back!

Yelp
So very good. Great service and the food was incredible. I'll definitely be back for more

Yelp
Super friendly little place with authentic Ethiopian food. The portions are generous and made for sharing. My husband got a lamb and rice dish he liked a lot and my daughter, son-in-law and I got the combo with meat (beef), veggies and lentil dishes.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
This is a small mom and pops restaurant. The place is clean and the food is great. They his all the right spices. The servings are generous. My only issue with the place is that the prices on the menu are not updates and we were not notified prior to ordering. Small issue but it would have been nice to be given a heads up.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here on a weekend. First time at this restaurant. We enjoyed the food. It was flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The spices were amazing. Food came out in a timely manner. Plenty of parking. Just be warned menu wasn't updated price wise. Be prepared to pay more at checkout. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Delicious, affordable food made by very sweet people! The portions are huge and my friend and I always seem to have leftovers. We always order the Special Combo along with the Kitfo. This is the first place I've ever tried Kitfo, and it is amazing. Kitfo is minced raw beef, marinated in a spice blend and clarified butter. I think I've had it both raw and rare here, and it is really delicious! Be sure to mix the beef into the spice pile served with it! The injera is tangy and chewy and wonderful! The Special Combo is a nice sampler to try a lot of different dishes. This is a special place, consistently the best Ethiopian food I've ever had.

Yelp
Been coming here over a a year and absolutely love the food. The service is always fast and nice, I always feel welcomed and served fast even on a busy day. We typically get a special combo to share with my wife and you can't really beat $20 for a filling dish for two. You can ask for spicy which basically adds chopped jalapeno peppers which go nice with everything in the dish. We've almost eaten everything here and so far it's all been delicious. The lamb tibs with rice are my wife's favorite. I highly recommend coming here if you have the time I've tried every Ethiopian restaurant here in Portland and can safely say this is the best. P.s the special combo is subject to having a few different items or less items based on the day and time.

Yelp
I almost went with a three but I'm feeling that COVID generosity. I have a couple of my favorite Ethiopian places so I know what good Ethiopian tastes like. It's been a long time. I'd say 10 years since my last. I got the lamb tibbs. It's basically small lamb chunks and onions in a sauce. The meat was a little gristly for my taste. Also having ordered medium I expected it to be spicier. Unfortunately overall it was just really salty. I appreciate that the injera is plentiful. You get the full tray and an extra roll up (I don't know the proper unit) However the flavor of it is really strong. I know most places it's pretty innocuous, but not here. Very sour and flavorful. So if that your thing then great. The prices are a little steep. Not sure I would return. At least not by myself.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Ethiopian food I've had in Portland and maybe the best veggie combo I've ever had, hands down. The cooks here are truly wonderful!

Yelp
What a lovely place I came to after work to have some dinner. The food was authentic delicious and the customer service was amazing. The cook came out to see how I enjoyed the food which is exceptional service to me. It definitely had a mom and Pop shop vibe which I really enjoy.overall great experience

Yelp
What a wonderful experience! This was our kids' first time trying Ethiopian food and they LOVED it! They gave it 10 stars. My husband and I tried a couple of restaurants in LA and this is the best Ethiopian food we've had. It's truly delicious! We now know what teff injera should taste like. It's a family owned restaurant and perhaps that's what takes their food and service to the next level - they put their heart into it. Great vibes! Thank you .
google avatar

Yelp
Food was amazing and space is really cute! Loved the Ethiopian music videos on the tv for added vibes. Me and my friend combined two veggie platters and added a meat dish in the center to share and had left overs. The beer is rly good too.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Food was authentic and delicious KT was super helpful with newbies to Ethiopian. To good selection of drinks. And have to ask for ice. But will go back again
google avatar

Rob R.

Yelp
My wife and I had a lovely lunch here, split one of the big plates and everything was fantastic. Would definitely go back if we're in the area again.

Yelp
My wife and I had never tried Ethiopian food before. The restaurant we had been planning on was closed but we were very satisfied with with Sister's. Everything is authentic, house made and delicious. The service isn't fast but its not fast food and it's worth the wait. The owner is very nice and a wonderful cook.
google avatar

Judy H.

Yelp
The staff at Sisters is friendly and welcoming and they proudly serve delicious home cooked Ethiopian food. I always order the veggie platter. It's plentiful, colorful and flavorful! The platter is a combination of green beans and carrots, different lentils, and a really tasty shredded beet dish. The food is quite filling and it's difficult to stop eating even though your stomach is starting to ache. The food is that yummy. (Be warned!) I highly recommend Sisters Ethiopian Restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
The best Ethiopian food around will be back. Great friendly service. Very accommodating made a custom plate to share with my and my friend
google avatar

Luke D.

Yelp
Great family restaurant that gives you plenty of water and good food. Lots of people there that were not Ethiopian so welcoming to a variety of folks. Would recommend to others.
google avatar

EJ K.

Yelp
Delicious food, great value. Honest and great service. Always feel good at this place.

Jane K.

Yelp
This place is wonderful!! The owner, the vibe, the FOOD!! Highly recommend it. I overheard some guests saying that they drive from the Salem are just for dinner at Sisters and I can't see why. I will be back time and time again.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm nervous about writing this review because I don't want to share my favorite Ethiopian place, but they deserve a ton of customers, so: Food is awesome and they give you a lot Injera is the best in town, fresh every time Dude who runs the place is chill and it's enjoyable talking w/him Ambience is amazing, like a wartime cafe in the middle of SE Portland Prices are good, which is clutch in an era when dinner for 4 people can easily go above $200. There are two kinds of people in the world--people who pick up dinner from Sisters Restaurant, and people who *should* be picking up dinner at Sisters.

Steve B.

Yelp
A wonderful culinary experience. Cozy, Friendly atmosphere with exceptional service. I never had Ethiopian food before, but I really enjoyed it. I really liked the Injera made with Teff, along with all the delicious toppings. I will be back.
google avatar

Lindsey F.

Yelp
We have been here several times and it is the best! The food is top notch, the servings are generous and the prices are very reasonable. In addition, the staff (owners) are SO friendly and welcoming. Definitely worth checking Sisters out!
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Pre-pandemic we had frequented Sisters and always had a good experience. Food was flavorful and prices were great. Owner was meh but tolerable. During pandemic and even now, the owner is rude and unfriendly when calling in take out orders. Or even calling to ask if dine-in is available he was very rude. Kinda sad that businesses don't even try to keep customers. We now go to "Try Me Ethiopian Restaurant in Gresham. A great find - very delicious and they welcome their customers!

Loren P.

Yelp
The combination plates were delicious and the veggie plate. The service was incredible and gave helpful recommendations on dishes to try. The inside of the restaurant had plenty of seating options and looked authentic.
google avatar

Jon F.

Yelp
Plenty of good food at a reasonable price. Certainly not the best Ethiopian food I've ever had, but it definitely hit the spot. I wouldn't go out of your way to get it, but I live in the neighborhood so I'll probably be back when I want my fix.

Veronica V.

Yelp
Wonderful family owned business. Very sweet and incredible service and ambiance. I don't post on here but they're the best :)
google avatar

Sofia D.

Yelp
This Ethiopian spot is fantastic. The lamb tibs we got were delicious and had just the right amount of heat (we got medium spice). The service was friendly, quick, and kind, and the prices were very reasonable.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
REALLY good food. They make sure to practice social distancing and proper sanitation skills so come pick up your food with peace of mind! Very friendly dude helped us decide (I'm always indecisive and change my mind at the last second), and the food took about 20 mins to make. I'd recommend calling in if you know what you want! It's my first time eating Ethiopian food. Such a pleasure to experience this taste in Portland! I'm a firm believer of 'good food will always taste yummy to anyone' and it sure was! If you're in town and you can, support locals!

Dan V.

Yelp
The food was tasty and reasonably priced, staff were friendly. FYI, the building needs some updates. That doesn't bother me since I enjoy hole-in-the-wall joints. Service was pretty slow, even though not many people were there, so I took off one star. It was about 15 minutes for water.
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
WOW first time trying Ethiopian food and I had to download yelp to talk about how delicious Sisters is. Beautiful atmosphere, and so welcoming. We will definitely be coming here more often. Thank you TK and sisters for the amazing experience!
google avatar

Douglas S.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service was good. but no sisters were in sight, only the dude who was the waiter and cashier. Will visit again.

Yelp
We enjoyed Sisters early on a Thursday evening. It was very quiet in the dining room and we were able to choose where we wanted to sit. The gentleman working was very friendly and helpful. My mother-in-law chose a lamb dish. My wife and I each chose a combination plate--mine vegetarian, hers with meat. We were asked if we wanted our selections to stay "separate" or if we would prefer family style. We chose family style so that both my wife's combo plate and my own were served together on a large injera platter. The food was delicious. This restaurant is very close to our new home and we were kicking ourselves for not visiting Sisters earlier, when we first moved to Portland a few months ago. I can't pick a favorite from the combination meals--I loved it all. This is a great neighborhood place in Mill Park. It seems like a lot of people call in for pickup. I can definitely see us doing that regularly as well.
google avatar

Lin H.

Yelp
Wow! The best kitfo I have had outside of Ethiopia. I almost wanted to call them and thank them but I thought I would leave this review instead. Great spices. Thank you.
google avatar

Chandra M.

Yelp
The food and service is great. The veggie combo is my go to. I especially love when there are beets. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Ali R.

Yelp
This is my favorite Ethiopian restaurant! I had the veggie combo and the tibs. Divine!

Greg C.

Yelp
It's OK. I miss Jarra's on Hawthorne. Great food, and Petros was entertaining. I know that it's not as authentic, but I like white flour ingera. Just my personal preference. Still looking for a restaurant to replace Jarra's.
google avatar

Tracie T.

Yelp
Picked up a veggie combo and a normal combo today. It was delicious!! I would definitely return when I'm in the area.
google avatar

Teresa F.

Yelp
Not good African food, does not taste fresh, nor flavorful, I would not recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
Our experience was amazing. Food was so good and we left beyond full. Our son had his first taste of Injera and love it. We always love when the chef comes out to ask how our meal was. Extremely low prices and plan to make this our go to from now on.
google avatar

Zuriel V.

Yelp
My favorite Ethiopian restaurant in Portland! The veggie combo is delicious and inexpensive. I wish it were closer to my house--I would eat there every day.
google avatar

Athena G.

Yelp
very nice restaurant!! lovely, welcoming environment. service is a little slow due to small staff, but they are very kind and you'll for sure get a nice warm meal out of it!! we got the doro wot (chicken stew) and misir wot (lentil stew). very delicious, and we all loved the bread that came with it for sure. bathroom was also well-kept and pleasant :)
google avatar

Cassandra D.

Yelp
Sisters was my first try of Ethiopian cuisine and that might have been a mistake because it's set the bar so super high that no one else has come close. Portions: HUGE Taste: AMAZING Ingredients: FRESH Ethiopian is now one of my favorite cuisines and I have Sisters to thank for that.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
Location: Mini strip mall off 122. Interior; Tables and booths were comfortable and very clean. Music at a reasonable volume. Menu: Meat and vegetarian menu items. We tried and liked the veggie combo. Included carrots and potatoes, greens ( turnip?), small beans in a lightly spicy sauce, yellow lentil stew, slightly sweet cabbage and carrots. Lots of fluffy, slightly tangy injera bread to sop up all the lovely juices. Staff: Friendly and attentive Would I go back? Definitely!
