On the Grid : Six Ping Bakery

"This small chain of Asian bakeries offers delicious breads, cookies, cakes and other treats. Enticing loaves and buns wrapped in cellophane line the shelves. They are stuffed with dreamy custards and creams and exotic fillings such as Taro, Green Tea, Red Bean and Mochi. We were intrigued by the Watermelon Toast and crab-shaped Super Q Kawaii Bread Crab Taro. Everything we tried was obviously baked fresh that day." - ph Design Shop

November 2024 This bakery is a must stop for us in Houston. Great value and generous portion. Taiwanese style bakery with many different flavors, salty or sweet. Highly recommend this bakery when visit HTown.

Google
Some of the best sweet buns I’ve ever tasted. Perfectly golden, inside is soft and almost cake like, you can taste the sweetness, it’s almost like a custard when warmed. These buns pair nicely with pulled pork or some kind of pork dish! I ended up purchasing about 3 of their sweet buns. I didn’t end up trying anything else but I promised myself I would try something different each time I came here.

Google
Really cool place and wide variety of breads and pastries to choose from. Everything we got was so soft and fresh. There bread is not very sweet which I really liked.

Andrea Espinosa

Google
Cute little bakery. It's easy to overlook this bakery due to big brand name bakerys nearby, but make sure to give this bakery a chance!! For being such a small bakery, there is still a lot of variety. The cakes on display also looked very beautifully made. Everything I tried was delicious, but if I had to choose a couple to recommend, it would be the Tiger cake roll for sweet bread and the hot dog pull apart bread for a savory option.

Julian Nguyen

Google
Just tried to place an order for a cake and the person on the phone was so rude and aggressive I said nevermind and hung up. For instance, I asked what size cakes do they have and she went' "There's no need for size! How many people will be eating this cake?!" Our whole exchange went on like this, in which I asked a question and I was being yelled at when I was asking politely. I'm sorry you were having a bad day, I hope it gets better and you treat the next customer with respect.

Google
I have been to a couple Six Ping locations and this place is smaller than others, yet the selection is pretty much the same. My favorites are Cony's Boyfriend (chocolate mousse) and other chocolate cakes, and the bread with dried pork meat is good, too. The staff was friendly.

Google
I wish I lived next door. I picked out one pastry for each family member and now regret not just buying a whole plate for myself. There are so many delicious options, none will disappoint. The staff is patient and kind, so I felt comfortable taking my time.

Google
Came here for a quick sweet treat and it smelled so good that we ended up leaving with a bag full of goodies. It smelled heavenly inside and the owner was very kind and helpful! Highly recommend if you are in the area! :)

Yelp
Stopped by Six Ping on a Saturday afternoon after lunch at a restaurant in the same complex! We purchased the pandan cake and Thai milk tea cream bread for $2.75 each then 2 scoops of banana milk and Oreo cream cheese gelato for $4 each for a subtotal of $13.50 (note that they don't take card for purchases under $5). The space was clean and welcoming, with a booklet up front to browse cakes for order. I haven't tried the pastries we purchased yet, but the gelato flavors were unique, creamy, and refreshing! There's no seating inside, but there are 2 tables with 6 chairs total outside. We opted to chill here and enjoy the Sunday afternoon breeze.

Yelp
I've been going here for as long as I can remember and it's so good. I really like their savory breads and they're all very cheap and worth it. My family always buys the mango cake here. It is more expensive ($50) but it's really good. The icing is not too sweet, theres fresh mango and fruit on it, there is a layer of flan/pudding in between and a layer of mango inside the cake as well. The workers are very nice and they have so many options.

Yelp
The Japanese Cheesecake is the best, my family uses it for birthdays instead of regular cake now. Basically all of the dessert options in the fridges are amazing. The bread is not my cup of tea besides the Taiwanese style Egg Custard, that one is great. Keep in mind they do not accept AMEX Inexpensive but overall good quality and would recommend if in the area.

Yelp
This location is the absolute worst. I typically buy from the store in Dun Huang Plaza but in a haste I clicked the wrong location and ended up here. I wish I would have taken 3 more minutes to go to the other store. Customer service was not a thing. From the time I walked in to the moment I walked out no one said a word to me. Like even when paying she never even said the total or thank you. I always get the same items and everything this time was stale and old. The small cheesecakes I love were literally so old the bottom of them were completely mush from sitting in the refridgerator for so long. I will never buy from here again.

Yelp
Excellent Chinese bakery w/a lot of variety of delicious baked items. I always order birthday cakes there. The chiffon cake (8" round or full & half sheet cake) is always moist, the fruit folded into the whipped frosting is refreshing and delicious, and not too sweet and sugary, as most most other cake frostings are. The decorations are always so pretty. I particularly liked the mango decorated cakes and the Hello Kitty decorated cake for young girls. I have been going to this bakery location for years and have never been disappointed.

V. F.

Yelp
The "Texas Star" cake was the most delicious cake I've ever tasted! Light white frosting with the moistest cake, tons of almonds all around the sides and a variety of fresh fruit on top!! Unbelievable cake.......but all of the baked goods are fantastic!
google avatar

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
Delicious cakes. They take order in advance so you can be sure you get what you want. You can even ask them to hold a cake for you. The inside is small but that realaly doesn't matter cause they have so many delicious selections.

Selow W.

Yelp
Great selection. Everything tasted wonderful and stayed very fresh for many days. If Six Ping wasn't so far from home, I'd go more often.

Yelp
My biggest pet peeve is that the owner didn't manage the biz pages on all of the Six Ping Bakeries 六品烘焙. This page was moved from Metropole Center to Dun Huang Plaza during Bellaire Blvd reconstruction in 2012-2015. The reviews were all over the places. I think this page didn't move back to Metropole (near Mala Sichuan) until 2017. I have been to all Six Ping Bakeries. This one is the smallest and has the best aroma than others. During CoVid-19 food service restriction period in 2020, they struggled to stay open. It was the saddest in Chinatown history. They closed more days then opened days. Things improved in 2021 but still operating under precaution. I praise for their business strategy by allowing few customers inside at the same time. Because I crave for the Hong Kong Buns once a while. It's far better than eating donuts. In 2022, inflation doesn't stop me from coming back for those delicious baked buns. They always have art cakes. That's why I'm here today to grab a slice of beautiful tasty cake.

Yelp
Small tradition Chinese bakery in an old strip center of Chinatown. Large varieties of fresh bakes that were priced lower than the competitors. The size of the bakes was larger too. Our party brought several types of red bean filled buns. The red beans filling was generous and the bread was soft. We enjoyed the buns very much with our afternoon coffee at home. There were no tables nor chairs for indoor consumption. I will return if I am in the area.
google avatar

Rina M.

Yelp
I leave with a tray (or two) full of their baked treats. I love anything with taro and they have a few varieties of taro bread and treats. Their offerings of small cakes and pastries are plentiful and I haven't been disappointed!
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
Cute place with all the best things. Mago cake was amazing for Mother's Day. Only gave 4 out of 5 stars because it was a tight squeeze with everyone in the store and limited signs outlining what everything was. But everything we tried was great.

Richard C.

Yelp
If only I could give 10 stars. Best desserts I've had. If y'all are ever in the area, you have to come through. Their durian cake is fkkkng delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. Delicious pastries. I got a cheddar jalapeño bread loaf. It was kind of sweet, but overall delicious. The lady is super kind. I'm wishing the best I know it's not the safest part of town. She asked us if we needed anything and she let us take our time. Definitely coming back whenever I can.

Yan Z.

Yelp
Bad attitude regardless of food. The old lady yelled at me when I asked what kind of bread name is because no name tag under the tray. Definitely not recommended this location. Been here almost every week, this is worst experience overall. Hopefully the owner could see it and fix their staff! One star for food only zero for service!!!
google avatar

Peter X.

Yelp
Basically a cheaper version of 85C Bakery. The specialty pastries are pretty large and they're only $3. The pies and cakes are pretty unique, are fairly priced ($5 for the minis) and aren't too sweet. I recommend the three that I've photographed: the mango mousse, the chocolate bear shaped mousse, and a durian pie.
google avatar

Jeny M.

Yelp
This is my first time going here as I was on a last minute search for a birthday cake. The bakery is small but clean with a lot of options. The owner is so nice and welcoming. She was so thoughtful and giving me everything that I needed for a cake. This is now one of my top spots for cake when I'm in the area.

Katherinne P.

Yelp
The lady was very kind. All of the breads she sells are very delicious, some are sweeter than other, but they are still very good. Very cheap and is a fast treat for you. I recommend this place a lot!

Shork ..

Yelp
Delicious cakes! Love love love the mango one The bakery smells amazing too! Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Asian bakery that has an excellent assortment of flavors. The pastries tend to be light and fluffy with smooth and creamy, but not overly sweet filling. I was warned not to purchase too much because you want to eat it fresh. I wish I could have tried everything.
google avatar

Yelp
I was mistaken. My previous review was for a different six ping location with way better service. This location is next to lao sze chuan. I'd have to say it is one of the worst locations you can visit. Having visited recently, we walked in with a drink in our hands, and the lady immediately started yelling, "NO NO NO," and kicked us out. I understand if a business does not want other food and drinks inside, but there was a better way to approach the situation. The shelves were not as fully stocked and had limited options in comparison to the other six ping locations. Let's just say I will not be returning.
google avatar

Yelp
I picked out a little chocolate mousse cake it was so cute and sooo delicious. I was really pleased with the service and how quick everything went .
google avatar

Kalvin A.

Yelp
Baked good was sooooooo delicious. I wish I had only bought more of it! So sad it's only in Houston! I wish there was a way to overnight the baked goods from here! Love the service as well, very friendly!

Yelp
COVID-19: Open and masks worn with a plastic barrier!! The owner is Taiwanese!!! A TAIWANESE BAKERY Y'ALL YUSSSS. There were SO many quality breads, some Taiwanese staples...and others that were so brilliant like pandan coconut and a sponge cake bread with pandan, taro AND vanilla? YES. Their breads are what I am used to: buo luo/pinapple bun, breads with rou song/pork floss, and ingredients like taro and custard. Man! I have been looking to get Taiwanese bread outside of 85C (because 85C is definitely more "white-washed" and overpriced, let's be real). Six ping is it!!! I was also pleased to know that they have multiple locations, but all sprinkled around the Chinatown area. I'm pumped that I know I can get fluffy, delicious, fresh and TASTY asian breads outside of 85C. All of the breads I picked were around $2. The friendly and kind lady working today at this location was so sweet. Do know that there's a $10 minimum for credit card use, so if you don't plan on getting a lot of items...bring cash! Plenty of parking in this parking lot shared with other restaurants. Come through and support local y'all.

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Great quality bread ! There's many stores around so there's much to do after eating the bread. Y'all should try the mango mousse it's my favorite cake ( as a fruit and mango lover ) and the red bean bread as well .

Yelp
Today's Mommy's Birthday! Happy Birthday Mommy!! I love you Mommy! said my exquisitely adorable daughter....like 10 times! *heart melted* Fallen in love at the first sight with this cute unicorn cake, my picky eater kept scooping into her mouth the colorful sweet cream and had fun playing with the fondant unicorn horn. Hey, you guys just have no idea how difficult it is to make her stay seated and eat! I loved my tasty birthday cake and had a great time. Thank you Six Ping!

Yelp
This lady I don't know if she owns this place but she's a bitch. I open the fridge looking for a diet or zero drink and she told me I'm looking too long the temperature is dropping. I told her she's annoying and I just bought more than $20 of bakery goods. No consideration. I'm coming back and cuss at her again or go to 85degrees. Bad customer service

Apple L.

Yelp
Amazing cakes. Staff was very nice. We always stop by when we are in town. The smell of the bakery is so yummy
google avatar

Yelp
Maybe it's because cakes are more of their specialty, or I got the wrong items (they had a BIG selection) or that my expectations were high, but...yeah, I miss Doraville. I got a pandan coconut bun, a taiwanese lotus egg yolk cookie, a mung bean bun, a bacon cheese baguette, and a couple of the big macaroons (chocolate and...I think raspberry?) Anyways, the mung bean bun and the lotus cookie were way too sweet. The pandan coconut bun was almost the opposite, but the main problem was I could barely taste the pandan. The taste of the eggs in the dough was stronger than the actual main flavors. The bacon cheese baguette had a good flavor, but while I don't mind fatty bacon this bacon really was at least 80% fat. The macaroons were the one item where besides the texture (that may have been partially because I didn't eat them straight away and put them in the fridge) I really did like. Besides looking really cool because they were as big as my hand, they were pretty decent (the raspberry one didn't have much flavor other than vague sweetness, but the chocolate one had a lovely flavor). Overall: in the things I tried, there wasn't much flavor and a fair amount was too sweet, or had other issues. My least favorite Chinese bakery in the Atlanta area I liked a lot better than this, and there were four others I preferred to it. I'll have to keep looking for something like my old favorites.
google avatar

Elaine M.

Yelp
We definitely were stopping by here to get some Chinese baked goods for the road. We came right when it opened on a weekday and it might not have been such a good idea... We were in a rush to get on the road and they were still packaging the buns to put out on the shelves so we did not get to select from the full selection. We were able to get some coconut bun, custard bun, lotus cake, mango bun... Next time we need to come in the middle of the day to get some cake! The cakes displayed looked soooo good and beautifully decorated. Bonus to this place because they take credit card! Phew!
google avatar

Cassie X.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite bakeries and absolutely the best place for cakes. I tend to prefer Asian bakeries compared to American ones because it's not as sweet. Their big sized cakes are only $32. I got a taro cake there for a friend's birthday and it was absolutely delicious. It also came with candles and a happy birthday sign.
google avatar

V T.

Yelp
Six Ping appears to be a local Chinese bakery chain in the Bellaire district of Houston. There is an excellent variety of really large fresh looking buns, both sweet & savory, in the $2-3 range. They are perfectly balanced in a very Chinese way, without being overly sweet or rich, but still are quite filling. This is not the place to come for really upscale or "extra" tasting dough, it's more simple yet satisfying. I thought the buns were all delicious. I recommend getting anything with custard filling. Keep in mind there's a $10 minimum if you want to pay with card, otherwise just bring cash.
google avatar

Frankie G.

Yelp
Delicious baked goods, and really good cakes! Everything that I have tried at six ping has been delicious. Recently got a cake for a birthday party and it tasted and looked amazing!

Jett N.

Yelp
High quality cakes with many selections. For birthday cakes, order in advance is recommended.
google avatar

Monalisa Z.

Yelp
Many selections. Durian bread 3/5 Durian pie 5/5 Pork sung bread 5/5 Pandan triangle cake 5/5 Vanilla triangle cake 5/5 Long cheese bread 4/5 Pandan cupcake 5/5 Recommended for sure. Two thumbs up
google avatar

Wen Z.

Yelp
This place is my "go to" for all celebrations, birthdays, holidays, gatherings, sweet cravings... their cakes not only look beautiful, but taste beautiful too
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
We stopped for a few snacks before eating a late lunch, we have very little Asian bakery experience but everything we bought was delish. The chocolate almond cookies, honey melt cookie, and the coffee cream cookie were tasty.
google avatar

Uyen H.

Yelp
I got some cute decorated mousses and it didn't disappoint me. The consistency of the mousse cream for the durian is softer (possibly will melt easily if leave in hot place) than the cony boyfriend chocolate mousse. Durian mousse on a pie crust: top is durian mousse and bottom is light, soft sponge cake. The inside is filled with small amounts of fresh durian. Covered with light durian ganache. Cake is not overly sweet. Love it. Will taste better if serve cold. Cony chocolate mousse on a pie crust : only chocolate mousse. Topped with cocoa powder and chocolate.
google avatar

Claudia F.

Yelp
I finally got to try this place. It smells wonderful inside. I like that the cashier leaves you alone until you're ready to make your purchase. Everything looks delicious and I tried the coconut almond bread which was awesome. I normally don't really like Asian pastries because they're not sweet enough for me but this one was perfect. So many choices

Jacqueline N.

Yelp
Loved this bakery! One of my favorite bakery! Cake not too extremely sweet! Will try different flavor later on.
google avatar

Fox E.

Yelp
I don't even have one ping, let alone six of them, but if you want six of them, this is the place to come. One of the better and more Innovative bakeries in Chinatown Houston with all kinds of delights. Sometimes they sell homemade Mochi sweets which are so chewy and delicious and drive me crazy. They have massive size macarons which I don't like very much. But they have a lot of other good stuff here and you should check them out. Their custard tart is probably my favorite item. I've been to two locations many times - one is in Dynasty Plaza next to Mala and the other one is over in dunhuang which is newer I think. Literally across the street from each other but because people usually go by Plaza around here that totally makes sense. It's almost like putting one in another town or at least another suburb. And if you want 7.5 ping, call me.
google avatar

Josie N.

Yelp
A friend told me this was the best bakery they had in Houston so I decided to try them out! I'm usually a Korean bakery girl and this was more Chinese style bakery with pork floss, sugary cookies and also offered to go coffees. I tried their Japanese cheesecake mini which was the best one I had so far! It was more on the wetter side? But it was so moist and so fluffy! I also had their custard bun and I have to say it was so good! Not cheap vanilla custard, but it was Harty and not too sweet! I also got some almond cookies and... the chocolate one straight up tasted like chalk lol... like the cheap cookie in the tin your grandma has in the house that nobody really eats? Their other almond cookie with a sugar coating was a lot better! They also have animal shape bread that was super cute and pastries with the hotdog. All in all it is really tasty and I'm glad to have tried it
google avatar

Richard N.

Yelp
Great Asian Bakery! They have amazing cakes, always fresh variety of bread selections, and I especially like how they individually packaged everything. It is a small bakery but the shelves are always well stocked. The cakes are moist, not overwhelmingly sweet, and they have great flavor choices. There's always premade cakes ready to be purchased, but custom order ones only need 2-3 advance notice.
google avatar

Carlin T.

Yelp
There were too many that I wanted to try, so I decided to buy 5 and call it my dessert for a week or two. 1) japanese cheesecake - this is like a pocket for fluffy lightness with a hint of cream cheese 2) teddy bear mousse pie - nice smooth chocolate mousse shaped in a dome sitting on top of chocolate cake and a layer of cream 3) tiramisu cup - so so ... not enough coffee chocolate flavor to call it a tiramisu; missing the best part of tiramisu which is the soaked ladyfingers (this was like a lightly moistened cake) 4) green tea cake - delish like last time 5) durian pie - I found out I do not like durian at all
google avatar

Lois W.

Yelp
Affordable and fresh, each pastry is packed in its individual package, I like it because of sanitary conditions. Especially, I love the white cream topping vanilla flavored bread and Oreo cream bun ( just one straight line of cream in the top middle of the bun). It is not easy to find this kind of bread/bun in other bakeries.
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
Small shop with a great assortment of asian baked goods. The japanese cheesecake is only a couple bucks and fluffy, properly portioned, and delectable. Gather up a few rolls, and present them at the counter to pay. Parking is limited directly in front of the establishment, but the shopping area is pretty large even has a parking garage attached so you won't have too much trouble finding a spot as long as you're willing to walk a few minutes.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
The Six Ping empire strikes again. They have multiple locations, and are consistent for each location. The pineapple tarts are the best goods you can get from Six Ping. Most of the breads are nothing special, the pineapple buns leave something to be desired, and the egg tarts are okay. The macarons make great souvenirs, but just look good. Nevertheless I've never had better pineapple cakes. There's a decent amount of parking and the cashiers and customers are mostly Asian.

Akshat K.

Yelp
Service was good but the lady at the front had trouble understanding my words initially. It's a very small store. Cake is good but expensive.
google avatar

Sofia C.

Yelp
I really like this bakery they have a great selection of both sweet and savory bread. Some of the bread have super cute shapes with great flavors, the bear chocolate mousse is delicious! in the other hand the blackberry felt short, I think it depends on your personal taste. I got a bunch of breads my last visit, following is my breakdown: -Chocolate bear mousse, tasty not super sweet chocolate nor is bitter, plus is super cute. -Blackberry cake, not strong blackberry flavor weird after taste on bread -Honey soft bread, this is probably why I like this bakery so much the sponge cake recipe they use is 10/10 -Big size macarons, not the traditional macaron flavor or texture, won't recommend getting them here More to come, I still have about 4 more I have to go through.
