The Best Coffee Shops in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Roaster Sam Kjellberg’s coffee comes from single-origin micro-lots all over the world (think: citrusy Colombian varieties and Guatemalan beans with notes of rose and milk chocolate). Skillfully roasted, they’re served in simple, classic forms: espresso, drip, Americano, flat white, latte, pour over, and cold brew. SK offers a handy coffee subscription service and also has locations in Whittier and the Minneapolis Skyway; the latter accepts online orders if you’re in a rush." - Stacy Brooks

Wicked location right next to Lake Monster Brewing. Open warehouse interior made cozy with a plethora of plants. Perfect for meet-ups or laptop work. They source & roast single origin micro-lots, which I enjoyed a cup of their Ethiopian roast. Picked up a Chai Latte for my fiance and she had nothing but positive things to say! Additionally, they sell bags of their roasted coffee as well as fresh pastries.

Lovely spot in a historical building for working or chatting with friends. Great coffee, lots of room to spread out and get comfortable with various seating options. Definitely recommend.

Google
If anyone visits St Paul ever, I always send them to SK. The atmosphere is enough draw on its own- but top it off with the quality of coffee and baristas? Top notch. Recently they've teamed up with a local florist to keep the tables decorated and it's gorgeous!! 🪻☕️ 10/10

Google
This coffee shop is an absolute great! Their matcha latte tastes like real matcha, while the croissants are buttery. The place offers a lot of sitting and welcoming staff create the perfect setting to relax. It's a must-visit spot for anyone seeking a matcha coffee and pastry experience.

Google
Bathrooms are nice and clean, multiuser bathrooms that have a code. Code is posted by cashier so it's simple and easy. Coffee is good, unique open space with enough seating when I visited mid morning on a Saturday.

Google
I ordered the Miel latte w/ oatmilk and a corn empanada. The empanada is worth the wait (20 mins) and the latte was beautiful. The barista took great to make the beverage. The building is a bit cold so dress warm! Bathroom requires a passcode. More standing room than sitting.

Google
Cute, minimalist spot in a cool building. Plenty of parking. The staff was very friendly and I enjoyed my dirty chai. For Minnesota winter though, it was extremely chilly inside. Maybe some space heaters to warm things up?

Ariel Borisch

Google
The barista was clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about the source and preparation of both the coffee beans and matcha powder. They prepared one of the best match lattes I have ever had! The baristas both seemed to genuinely enjoy they jobs and were passionate about the beverages they served. The shop itself was fun, funky and comfortable to work in.

Yelp
I've started stopping here for coffee and I'm getting increasingly excited to do that with increasing frequency. It's really good coffee. This was recommended by a friend who is very serious about coffee quality, and he stocks up on beans from here because they are literally the best. I just love their hot, sweet brews, plus also the friendly service and vivid vibes. This is in the misleadingly-named Vandalia Tower complex along with Lake Monster Brewing and Gremlin Theater, and it has that industrial, artisan-y warehouse atmosphere that I really enjoy. I've been in on weekday and weekend mornings and there is always a pretty big smattering of customers but service is always quick. Definitely recommend! Park in front of Lake Monster; check my pics to see where to enter.

Yelp
super good matcha! good vibes & nice staff. ambiance is chill & has fun art surrounding the space

Yelp
Great matcha. Chill coffee shop atmosphere. To top it off, parking didn't suck! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Super interesting coffee can be found here. It does very quite a bit depending on what they're roasting lately, but highly recommend giving their pour overs a try. The decor is minimalist at best, but the staff is great.

Yelp
Im from out of town, so it was a little hard to spot it. Its inside the buildings near the parking lot. The coffee was great and the staff was nice. I just got a coffee to go, but nice little spot

Yelp
I have been a coffee fan my entire life. And while I love the occasional frilly latte, my coffee journey is defined by the pursuit of the ultimate black coffee. And at this SK Coffee in Saint Paul, I have arrived. To the point - very interesting bean selection, perfectly roasted - consistently stellar pour overs here. - all baristas are skilled and knowledgeable, follow an efficient process and crank out pour overs fairly quickly - the above three points mean that here you will consistently taste many well balanced brews with very interesting notes. This is precisely what I have been searching for. - the fru fru drinks are good 2 - you will need to pay for the quality: 9 or 10 dollar pour over! But as a coffee connoisseur, I will budget for the occasional spectacular brew! - it's a lot of dollars, but at here every dollar is spent on quality - interior is very spacious. This is not a cozy coffee shop, but it does have lots of great seating options and these cool magnet art tables -- see video. I really like the vibe here, but there are a lot of other cool coffee shops if it's vibes you want - their empanadas are delicious too, if you can wait 20-25 minutes! Other coffee shops to consider - Weasley Andrews. Cool spot, cool neighborhood. Pour overs are much less expensive but not as good, and less consistent. But they are above average and like 1/3 the price. - Sovereign grounds. Good drip brewed coffee, very cool vibe. We call it the "play cafe" as they have a room with toys for kids! A gem for sure - Caffetto. Another genre of coffee shop - the late nighter. Enjoy an 11pm brew. Incredibly cool vibes, a basement of pinball machines. Right by a stellar ice cream cone shop

Yelp
It's a hidden gem in a gorgeous warehouse building! I had no idea the building was renovated because there's no signs on the exit from 94, but there's a big parking lot off the street shared by Lake Monster brewing. Huge windows with lots of light and plants everywhere. It's just in the lobby to the building so it's very open with two big tables and a counter with plug ins to work at. Most spots were filled from 10am-noon. Even with no walls, it's very quiet and peaceful. The wifi signal was strong and great for working there. The miel was incredible and oat milk was no upcharge. They had a limited coffee menu with a spiced latte as the only syrup option that I saw. The barista was super nice. There was a pastry case with a few options that looked amazing. It's very pricey for a coffee but it's a cool shop to try!

Yelp
Fun coffee shop in a warehouse in St Paul. I wasn't expecting it to be in the lobby of the warehouse so it didn't have the coziest feel but there were plants everywhere and it was calm and there were enough tables and chairs to work at for everyone! And a wall of plug ins and free wifi. The miel (honey latte) was so good and smooth and they didn't charge extra for oat milk. They also had pastry options and sell bags of coffee. It's right across from Lake Monster Brewing company so you can head over there for a drink after! And there was a Thai food truck outside when I was there on a Tuesday evening.

Yelp
Great coffee. Lots of wide open spaces to accommodate conversation. Parking was no problem.

Yelp
This place is heavenly! Sam is a wonderful and personable barista who makes your drink at the counter when you order. There is plenty of seating in this decoratively sprawled warehouse space on the first floor of the Vandalia Tower, making it an ideal study environment. There's even a corner outside the counter with lots of plants and greenery, very cute. I ordered the Sweet Galium, a take on the classic vanilla latte. The espresso was rich and the drink was immensely smooth. This is how coffee should be crafted! I'm not surprised this spot is rated one of Minnesota's best; glad I went out of my way to experience this gem.

Yelp
An outstanding coffee shop located in one of the best places in Saint Paul! I love this place, because it is vintage Saint Paul, at its finest! As you walk into the coffee shop, you'll notice the warehouse, feel of the area with open, seating, high ceilings, and plenty of space to drink and socialize. The barista's know what they're doing, so make sure you not only order your favorite coffee, but savor the flavor! I love areas with plenty of creative space in this building definitely has it! The people are friendly, the atmosphere is golden and the coffee unforgettable! One of my favorite places to drink, work, and eat!

Yelp
There are maybe very very few coffee shops that allow dogs indoors around Minneapolis-St. Paul and specifically a space that is large enough for me to bring my pup(s) and have our own comfy spot while not feeling too cramped or in anyone's way. The iced dolce was fantastic and I was able to sit and read for a while with my pup Raya. Definitely going back!

Yelp
We're almost certain the barista ruined our coffee here. It was crazy acidic- unforced error... But an error nonetheless. And for that reason we can't recommend them. Consistency... get you some.
google avatar

Brad M.

Yelp
This is the best coffee roaster in the Twin Cities! They specialize in sourcing from small farms unique beans which have been processed in ways to make their unique flavors really pop! They are super knowledgeable and describe what makes those flavors pop. Fun setting too!

Yelp
Decided to give this place a whirl...what a good choice. Unique place and delish coffee. We had a dulce de leche, miel, and latte. All were just perfect. Had some pastries and they were very good. Glad we gave this a try.

Lucky G.

Yelp
Simply the best coffee roaster in town. Always interesting, many different single origins.

Yelp
This is my new favorite coffee shop in town! The staff is always friendly, very thorough in their work and also quite knowledgeable about coffee. The space is wide open, well furnished and has plenty of outlets & tables to work at. They have a good selection of tasty baked goods and the prices are pretty reasonable considering the high quality.

Yelp
Wow, I haven't ventured out lately in my neighborhood. I am so glad I checked out this place. It is like hidden next to a big building. Lots of natural lights and it very spacious inside, just needs more chairs and table. Their coffee is amazing from Colombia. Friendly barista, I forgot his name. I will come back!

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop in an industrial area. I got the iced spiced latte and it was super yummy!! They were pretty busy but it was definitely worth the wait.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing coffee and a beautiful place. Best coffee in the area and the employees who work there are extremely helpful and go above and beyond!!
google avatar

Gretchen P.

Yelp
Was able to chat across the bar with the baristas, even met the owner while he was testing out new roasts! Absolutely delicious coffee, came out quick, got to sit in a cool sunlit seating area, no complaints. Clearly they invest in making the best possible coffee, even the honey is made from coffee flowers or something sick like that. Coffee went down quick.

Yelp
Hidden respite from this busy, car-traffic area. Ideal visit via bike with a well air-conditioned, large lobby of a room with comfy lounge chairs or even a few spots at a cute bar. Super fresh coffee for $3.50 and a simple selection of excellent Mojo Monkey donuts make for a great morning stop. Plenty of bike racks and patio seating shared with Lake Monster brewing.

Yelp
I went to SK a few months ago and was blown away by the absolute craftsmanship of their coffees. I thought the service was quick yet super personable. And I sat inside and worked on homework for a few hours in silence. It was so quiet and perfect for getting things done. Highly, highly recommend SK to students, businesspeople, and people looking for a chill spot to get work done while enjoying quality brew.
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
If you're a coffee purists or love trying a limited run beans from various regions make sure you pop into SK. They have a pure love for coffee. Offering a rotating menu of beans by buying small batch from regions like Ecuador and Columbia. No syrups are offered and limited milk options (oat only when I visited). I love coffee, so I loved visiting a place that clearly values, loves and has a unique take on coffee and roasting! They're unlike others in the twin cities. The entrance was a little confusing, as a first time visitor; it's located in the Vandalia Tower building. You can go in the main entrance to the building via the front or back and still find yourself in the coffee shop (don't let Google mislead you). The back entrance has a sign noting where SK is located, but the front doesn't. When in doubt look for a huge glowing LOL sign.

Yelp
I hadn't tried Jinx coffee before, and I'm glad I stopped in to try their Nitro version of that. A bonus star because the barista was quiet a pleasant guy.
google avatar

Sophie S.

Yelp
Best coffee in Saint Paul in my opinion! I always get the mocha which is not sweet sweet like your typical mocha but more like a dark chocolate bittersweet. Baked goods are amazing and locally sourced. SK Coffee is located in a warehouse with plenty of space to study. Cozy, hipster vibes with plants everywhere. Coffee beans, etc can be purchased right at counter too. Owners are very friendly and knowledgeable with their coffee!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
This is extraordinary coffee. It's clear that the team at SK coffee has put a tremendous amount of care into every step of their process - from sourcing single-origin beans, to roasting (done on site), to the way that each individual coffee is served to bring out the best experience of the flavors. My nitro cold brew was rich and full of an intense dark chocolate flavor, while my partner's pourover had a delicate balance of fruity and floral notes. The owners were super friendly and fun to talk to - they did a great job of taking us through the menu. Really beautiful space as well! Can't wait to come back
google avatar

Yelp
The best cup of coffee I have ever had! Every time I fly through MSP I stop in to get a cup of coffee. Great atmosphere...great cup single origin.
google avatar

Alexis S.

Yelp
Vandalia Tower has a very nice energy. There's a fair amount of seating. Coffee is very good but it is a small size for the price. Overall good experience. Great service too!

Michelle B.

Yelp
Not at all like the photos on the internet. Dirty and rude service. No half and half at the coffee shop, purportedly at the directions of the owners. The coffee had a bizarre aftertaste and the coffee cake was so hard, it was inedible. Save yourself.

Paul E.

Yelp
Echoing the 4 and 5 Star reviewers. Having said that, this is a 6 Star place for those interested in single origin coffees. You not only get a great cup while you're there, you can learn from the staff and bring some home with you as well. After my first trip there, I bought a Hario Coffee Dripper and a 1Zpresso JX Manual Coffee Grinder online for home brews and haven't looked back. SK Coffee has been my sole go to as they have variety and great attitude.

Rachel D.

Yelp
LOVE this place. Not only is the coffee some of the best I've had, the owner Sam is such a kind and wonderful person!
