The Best Speakeasies and Hidden Bars in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Though you don’t have to know any secret knocks or seek out a light letting folks know it’s open, Skaalvenn Distillery is one of the most original cocktail lounges just outside of the metro. Wander the labyrinth of the unassuming Brooklyn Park business center’s carpeted floors, past the sunken plaza that recalls mall-rat memories of many a visitor’s youth, and follow signs for Skaalvenn. You’re in for a quick switch from drop ceilings and harsh panel lights to a dark and cozy ambiance. The cocktails feature the distillery’s spirits. The menu is secretive and changes weekly — but rest assured there’s something for everyone from a clarified milk punch to a modern twist on an Old Fashioned, and the skilled mixologists are happy to whip up an expertly made classic cocktail for you, too. On Thursdays, its Tiki Night. Reservations are available on Tock." - Natalia Mendez

Minnesota Distilleries Making the Best in Local Liquor | Eater Twin Cities

"Another veteran-owned distillery, Skaalvenn uses unrefined, non-GMO products to produce its vodka, rum and aquavit. Skaalvenn’s habenero rum is no gimmick, but a great balance of heat and flavor. Meanwhile, the vodka imparts a pleasant hint of caramel flavor. Although, there’s no cocktail room, the bottles are relatively easy to find in area liquor stores." - Joy Summers

This place was great. The moment we walked in, we were greeted and seated immediately. I highly recommend making a reservation as it does get busy here and reservations take priority. I had made a reservation for 2. The atmosphere was great with a nice vibe to it. Music was not too overly loud and the crowd was not too loud. The food/snacks were not too bad. We got the return of the Mac hotdog and the Japanese party mix snacks. The hotdog was nice and juicy. The toppings for it was a good addition to boost the flavor. The party mix was a good blend of many different crackers and nuts that were all delicious. For drinks we got the koku, the Thai pod challenge, Japanese highball, and the lychee chuhai. All the signature cocktails were super strong and tasted great though. Our favorite was the chuhai because it was really flavorful without being able to taste the alcohol. Which will make this a creeper for sure. Overall, great staff and vibes and the drinks and food were all pleasant. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back

We walk into a pretty generic office building with halls that smell like kitty litter to the back to a door that looks it could lead to a fly by night car detailing business and are shocked. You walk through the doors and are instantly transported to a cool, dimly lit speakeasy. Great drinks, funky music, and cool atmosphere. We will definitely be back. Drinks are a little pricey but worth it when you see the care that goes into making them and the process behind some of them!

Google
If you want a unique experience, including wandering the building to get there, this place is a rare gem. It resides in an industrial looking building, there are signs on getting there. You won't get lost (hopefully). Their drinks are unique and something you won't find anywhere else. They also have classics, in case it gets too overwhelming and the staff are always fun and accommodating. One of a kind experience here in the cities.

Google
We had a small group visit this bar on a whim to celebrate a birthday, and boy are we glad we did! Chase, our server, was absolutely fabulous. He provided great personable conversation while also being professional and informing us of the cocktail flavors and the best ways to enjoy them. He also made sure he was taking care of those of us who had any dietary restrictions. The atmosphere was also really great, the decor and the music created a very enjoyable and fun atmosphere. You can tell this place is run by very genuine and all-around good people. The location is a little odd but absolutely well worth it! I’d highly recommend visiting if you’re looking for a good cocktail and good company. Will absolutely be back soon!

Visited with my husband twice. First when we decided to try it out & it’s gives a speakeasy vibe. Second time was when they had their taste of Asia event. I would highly recommend to check this place out! Unique vibe & experience. Plus passionate owners & staff are great!

Google
It’s unusual for me to leave anything other than 5 stars or like one or two. But this place is in between for me and can’t at the moment decide if I’ll come back as there are several amazing distilleries in the twin cities. First, the drinks were really good. Really interesting. I had the pandan express and I loved it. I also had the milk Tyson. Also loved and had a very cool ice cube. See pic. We ordered the Hobi bite crackers which were a nice snack. My husband had the fjord horse. Interesting and good. Perhaps a bit too much ice. Where I’m not sure is the service. We are not demanding customers. We sat at the bar and the staff didn’t seem like they even wanted to make eye contact with us and took forever for them to even check on us at all. It seemed like there was an employee for about every 3 customers so this felt odd. It’s also definitely pricey. Which I get. But for that I’d expect super premium service to go along with the good drinks.

Google
Outstanding!!! My husband and I love the speakeasy style cocktail lounge and this is probably our new favorite. Although it is an hour drive for us to get to, it is easily worth the drive. Great atmosphere, service and cocktails. We didn't have any food, so I cannot comment on that. All four of our party were very pleased with the experience. We had privacy and it was not loud like so many other bars and restaurants. My husband continues to talk about the Mukiwa drink he had. It's probably a good thing we don't live closer because we would probably be weekly visitors to Skaalvenn. Will absolutely be back again.

Google
What a great find! This distillery/cocktail bar is hidden within a nondescript office building, but the bar space itself is one of the better lounge interiors we've seen in the cities - everything was well thought out from the lighting, to seating and music. The cocktails are unique with new flavors you probably haven't tried. The staff (and owner if you catch him) are all really friendly with stories to share. We will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
This is the cocktail lounge the Twin Cities has been waiting for and it is found in an office building that feels like you're clocking your shift at Dunder Mifflin. You'll likely arrive after dark and assume your GPS has routed you to the wrong spot. But press on! You'll walk through a bunch of nondescript hallways like in my pics to ultimately arrive at the greatest cocktail lounge ever. You'll open the door and find friendly workers, fantastic ambiance and the best cocktail menu I've encountered. They're all made with spirits that they create on site and so you can tell they take pride in everything they do. Everything about the people and the place just feels thoughtful-- like no detail has been left to chance. The space feels a bit time warpy with a lot of retro hip hop playing and super cool nooks for small to medium sized parties. Was also told by a worker that the whole space can be rented out for big parties. As for the drinks themselves, you just have to experience. Really two of the best cocktails we've ever had. I did the In Fashioned and it was simply the most elevated old fashioned over ever tasted. Little details like the foam and burnt orange made it special. Finally, there is a way that a place like this could end up being pretentious because of the setup and elevated nature of the drinks. But, nothing could be further from the truth here. We interacted with five different workers and everyone was super friendly and welcoming. Would recommend getting a reservation to be on the safe side. We went late on a Friday and were ok but that isn't the norm we were told. We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
So, the approach is a surprise, since you're in a nondescript office park, but, the inside is a delight. Old 80s lounge area, mood lighting perfect fire and date or intimate gathering, really odd cocktails, and you can order in food (though good luck getting the driver to find it). Small team that knows their stuff well. I do wish the menu were a little bigger. Like only one drink with their very lovely aquavit. They say it expands as the week goes on, so maybe I got a slow night. The date I was on didn't go great, but I would still come back here!

Yelp
Another 5 star visit to my fave distillery ***** Nice to see some new cocktails listed Notorious RBC was interesting for me as I'm not a Bourbon drinker and I discovered if you let the ice cube melt just a little it tasted soo good and not so strong. Nice touch with the brownie bite in between sips And of course I still stand on the Espresso Martini is the best I've had yet in the cities- they make all the ingredients in house including their Khalua and the special touch must be their coconut fatwashed vodka! Sounds insane but it's epic!!! Some friends tried the spicy daiquiri which is made with their habanero rum - so that should give you a hint that it's spicy!! it had a really good flavor but too spicy for me to enjoy ,so make sure you check with the staff about all the ingredients in the cocktails before you order :) Ambiance is always on point ,great vibe moody lighting and old skool tunes The staff here are all friendly helpful and knowledgeable , I love coming here

Yelp
They had me at hello. Come experience the speakeasy feel of a distillery with hand crafted drinks and fabulously friendly staff. No details missed from the branded ice cubes, custom artwork, eclectic lounge areas. If you like spice there have a very spicy rum that I found to be amazing. They do offer Osseo meat market hot dogs and other food items. Great date night or group of friends.

Yelp
A speakeasy vibe hidden in an office building! SO glad I finally checked it out! Unlike other distilleries, their drinks are TASTY AS HECK and not too spirit forward. I had 'Tyson's Apple Pie'. It was perfectly sweet! My partner had the 'Pandan Express'. He wasn't a huge fan - so I recommend ordering one of the drinks where you recognize (most) of the ingredients haha. Prices were high so this is definitely a treat! I'd recommend making a reservation as we snuck in and got the only walk in table available. It's on the cozier side! Picture-worthy decor and the staff was friendly and entertaining. The entrance can be confusing, so follow Google and the signs indoor! Stop by next time you're in the area!

Yelp
Love Skaalvenn! Skaalvenn is our favorite cocktail bar in the cities! Such a cool vibe with the best drinks and bartenders. Truly a one of a kind place!

Yelp
Love almost everything about this place! Super unique aesthetic and very cozy. Kinda weird that it's in a single level business building but I think it adds to the effect when you walk into the place and it's a completely different world! Each of their drinks are super intriguing and you can tell a ton of thought was put into each one as they are all amazing. It's ran by a few friends and they're all really friendly and hospitable! You can tell they genuinely care about their customers and the business and pour their heart into it. Also you would never expect it but their hummus and warm pita bread is incredible!! Must order it every time I go. The only thing stopping me from going back often though is the steep price. After 2 cocktails, you're at $32, plus tip and tax, you're looking at $40. They do have slightly cheaper options but it all adds up very quickly.

Yelp
I love this place dearly. It's a little haven tucked away in an office building, and I hope it lives on forever! The atmosphere is unique & elegant. The drinks are fun, innovative, and delicious. The staff is and always has been so welcoming and friendly. If anybody is coming to visit the Twin Cities and wants a drink, I'd bring them here!

Yelp
Elevated decor with a local bar feel. Not just somewhere to drink, but an experience. The kind of place that remembers your usual drink and your usual is probably DELICIOUS!! LOCATION: In an unassuming industrial building, down the hall, then a left and a right and another left. Just follow the signs. They're fun and lead you down a community college feeling pathway to their front door which opens into a dark intimately lit room with an L shaped bar, a few tables and a view of the distillery equipment which just has such a nice vibe in the background. DECOR: Everything above the lights is black. Black walls with dark or illuminated orange accents. Luxurious spot lighting and Japanese inspired artwork behind the bar. Did I mention the fog? There's something about fog in a place that just sets the mood to fun and chill. PRICE: A bit on the pricier side, but these are much classier cocktails. Average about $15 per handcrafted cocktail. $12-$36 for a take home bottle depending on size and your of alcohol. (Vodka, bourbon, rum) Assorted Asian nuts & pretzels- $4 House Tom Yum seasoned pitted olives- $7 Housemade hummus and warm pita bread- $9 DRINKS: Drinks? No. Liquid orgasms made to please. Yeah. That's what I'll call them. Lomps. Lol. Fjord Horse was a masterpiece made with aquavit, house ginger beer, ginger, lime, galangal, lingonberry & hibiscus ice. Holy moly. My partner had 2 for her 40th birthday and could not have been more pleased! The Mike Tyson is good as well, but we asked for a non alcoholic version and was given an orange creamcicle whipped to perfection with nitrogen and almond whipped cream! It literally melted in my mouth like cotton candy ice cream in mid July! FOOD: Those olives plus the pita bread were plenty for 2 people and mighty delicious. I like olives, but have never been able to eat them served alone. Well, not until now. Don't sleep on the pita bread either. Everyone loved the hummus, but I don't like hummus. It's a texture thing for me. STAFF: Staff?! Please! Tyson and Nelson welcomed us in like family! They were social and kind and knew their ish about the drinks they made. Tyson brews the goods and Nelson crafts the magic. EXPERIENCE: I came here with my partner and her best friend for my partner's 40th bday. We walked along the path marked by cheeky signs with sayings like, "you're almost there" and "just a bit further." Once we arrived at the door, we rang the doorbell, and waited a few seconds before we were let in. And when I walked through that door, my mouth dropped. It was one of the most exciting transitions as we went from a faceless hallway to an upscale club with an exclusive underground vibe. We had reservations and were seated at the bar which we had to ourselves for most of the time. We spent our time socializing back and forth. Watching drinks created in front of us with nitrogen and fog flowing all around us. It was the most fun I have had sitting at a bar that wasn't celebrating someone's 21st birthday. Drinks were flowing and lips were flapping. It was an all-around good time.

Yelp
Upon entering the building you might feel like you are in the wrong spot but just follow the signs! The distillery is set within an office building so it gives it a kind of speakeasy feel as you are weaving down hallways to find the entrance. Upon entering you are transported to a completely different experience! The space has a dark and smoky feel with various seating areas for groups. We were extremely lucky to be seated as we tried to go here on a whim and they are reservation based. *Strong recommendation to make a reservation!* Especially if you are a group of 3 or more. Looking around the space, there were lots of little niches for those with reservations and each table gave a sense of seclusion with the dark lights and foggy air. We sat at the bar which was great as we had basically a free show in watching the specialty drink preparations. The team ran the operation well communicating with each other and handling drink orders seamlessly. The bartenders all took pride in their craft and were happy to talk with patrons in all things from general small talk to making recommendations to educating us on the cocktails and the spirits. All of their drinks are made with their house made spirits and they have a rotating menu of specialty cocktails. I chose the Fjord House, which was refreshing as it featured ginger, lingonberry and hibiscus with aquavit as the liquor. We also tried a spirit flight of rum, bourbon and habenero rum. Holy hell! The habanero rum is hot. Like so hot we each only had a sip and the burn lingered a long time and made my lips numb. We couldn't finish the pour and it was enough to scare me away from trying any drink with it in the future! The bourbon and the regular rum were good though! This is a gem in the northwest suburbs. Definitely making it into my list of top spots to try and looking forward to visiting again soon with friends!

Yelp
This little spot is definitely our #1 now. We have very few words other than just go here, it wont disappoint! Every drink was exquisite! We will go back over and over again!

Yelp
Next level cocktails. The attention to detail is insane. The bizarre transition of arriving at a random parking lot in the middle of nowhere and walking through an empty office building to enter a super dimly lit and moody atmosphere is definitely an integral part of the experience. Cocktails: You can't go wrong with any of them - all of the drinks I tasted were unique and super delicious. I tend to gravitate toward fruity drinks, so I ordered the brother piño (a take on the pina colada), which came in a cool pineapple cup. The Fjord horse is one of their more popular drinks - also fruity and pretty gingery. The pepper le pew was spicy in a good way, and the hot toddy was decadent and rich. Would come back in a heartbeat! The people there are also super friendly and nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Let's talk cocktails for a moment. Actually nah, let's talk next level, work of art cocktails for a moment. You can't really call it a speakeasy; there are signs directing you in, although the interior definitely has speakeasy vibes with a Japanese motif. Being nestled inside an unassuming, ground level Brooklyn Park office space you definitely feel the shock to your system going from one aesthetic texture to the other -- so we'll call it a better known hidden gem. It's a mixology experience like no other. The folks behind the bar take every special care to nuance each concoction being served. Owner Tyson is usually on hand to chat about his vision for the place and how his worldly team is so good at what they do; short version - their talents don't go unnoticed. Everything sent out is a masterpiece and it's ok if you need to gaze longingly at it for a bit before diving in I know I sure did. What we ordered: Almond Palmer ~ vodka, black tea, preserved lemon, almond cream. Napoleon Dynamite ~ Skaalvenn's habanero rum, pineapple, lime, yuzu, dragonfruit, coconut, vanilla. Milk Tyson ~ vodka, orange, lemon, vanilla, carbonation **clarified w/ milk** Easy Rider ~ watercress vodka, botanicals, peach shrub. **lovely house pickled skewer to accompany** No shortage of things to be Livin' for in this immersive cocktail experience! Go hit it soon!

Yelp
I am a huge fan of distilleries, and Skaalvenn is one of the best ones I've been to. The hospitality here is amazing and unlike any other distillery I've visited. Upon being seated, you're provided with warm hand towels and water. While we were waiting for our table to become available, we were provided with tasters of one of their drinks. The hosts are all attentive and knowledgeable and will take good care of you during your visit. The interior is intimate, artistic, and spacious. No matter where you're sitting, even if the whole place is full, you're not going to feel crowded by other guests. The drinks here are amazing. I've only been here twice, but both times the drink selection has been phenomenal. Skaalvenn offers an excellent variety featuring their spirits. Even though the distillery has Japanese influence, there's also an awesome 90s vibe that makes for a unique and eclectic experience. The music is packed with 90's hits and the checks come in jewel cases from iconic 90's albums! Overall, Skaalvenn has been a great place to go for drinks and is definitely going to be a place I go often. Thanks for such a great experience!

Yelp
A true hidden gem. This is part of an office building and wasn't expecting a lot. The minute I opened the door to enter pure shock. Reminded me of little hats in NYC. Service was PHENOMENAL. They truly work as a team and take the time to explain the drinks and details. Drinks may be a bit pricey compared to other distilleries but it is worth it. Fjord house was nice twist to my fave Moscone's mule very refreshing. The ice is even made with a tea and changes taste while it melts. My partner got a pepper le pew and gave it a 3 for spicy which had a great heat to it. We have decided this will be our go to place for when friends come in town and want to try something new!

Yelp
We ordered pita bread and hummus and they didn't even bring it. We were going to say something but decided to just leave.

Yelp
First time here. A little fun to try and find it as it is in a business park, but glad we did. Dark, great music, enjoyable. The milk Tyson was flavorful as was the beef curry puff. Highly recommend as Mary and the GM were very friendly. You won't regret coming in
google avatar

Luke F.

Yelp
Wow. The only bad thing about Skaalvenn is that it took us so long to discover it! All of the staff were amazing and really enjoyed to time the owner Tyson spent with us sharing a bunch of great deets about the distillery and their amazing specialty cocktails. You're going to think you're in the wrong place but this distillery and cocktail lounge are located in a random business strip mall in BP. But once you open the door, you'll be blown away by the ambiance. Very cool decor and the guy playing piano was a very chic touch as well. Especially as he was bouncing around between music like Backstreet Boys, Beethoven's Für Elisė and Elton John We just had one app tonight but the hummus was delicious and we can't wait to go back to try additional specialty cocktails. The name is Norwegian for cheers and the have bourbon. No surprise it was my jam!!

Yelp
Once you navigate through what looks like an 80s church building, you come across one of the coolest looking cocktail rooms in the Twin Cities. The drinks are always incredible and innovative. The hot toddy was . Elevated drinks without the pretentious vibe. The staff is super fun and the owners are great! You can tell a lot of thought went into creating the experience. Definitely my favorite place to introduce people to.

Yelp
Imagine pulling up to a standard office building to go to a distillery. Tucked away in an office building in Brooklyn Park, Skaalvenn transports you to another world as soon as you step inside the doors. The vibe is on point from the minute you see the space. Cool and chill is how I'd describe it, similar to a hidden speakeasy. For the night we were there, all kinds of hip hop being played inside but you wouldn't know outside, you'll only hear it as soon as you walk through the door. We had a private little space with a study feel. It had one of those super old TVs that has a dial that played old school Simpsons on tape. What was really neat was if you want a quieter space to be able to hear your friends, ask for this spot, the way they have the acoustics and sound wired, the music is just a nice background for you to still be able to enjoy a conversation without shouting. Now, let's get to the drinks. Craft cocktails is their specialty and you experience the amount of detail they have taken with each creation. You can't go wrong with any of the specialty cocktails, which are changed up every so often to give you the element of surprise with the menu each time. The presentation is such a nice treat to go along with tasty cocktails. Some so pretty that I don't want to ruin it by taking a sip! I really enjoy listening to the bartender coming each time with my drink to serve and explain each one and you can tell how much care goes into their craft. It's hard to choose just one, but I think one of my faves of the night was the Neoplitan Dynamite. The thought behind the different flavors and densities to make it separated is fascinating to me. It was fun to try each layer and then mix it all together for a whole new drink. That habanero infused rum has a surprise kick, so be prepared but once you mix it all together the fruitiness of the one layer and coconut foam layer is just the right amount to counterbalance the sourness and spice. Thank you so much to Tyson and Mary, the owners, I'm so excited to have a spot that has such a different and new experience here in MN.

Yelp
For starters, this distillery and bar is hidden in an office park. You might well miss its signs! It isn't obvious at all from the outside, but inside it's got a real speakeasy vibe and some really great staff. Those alone make this a 4-star, with the extra star coming from some excellent drinks. We had the Brother Piño and the Hot Toddy, which were sublime fancy cocktails with a cutesy twist. Come here for a drink or two and fun with friends, not to get trashed.

Yelp
Long overdue. 4 visits later. So much to love about this place. My favorite might be a little quirky, but I love the fact that its located where it is. You walk into the building thinking, where the f are we, then you are magically transported to another world once you enter the distillery. The staff is 6/5 stars. Phenomenal, fun, knowledgable, just overall excellent. Even when something goes wrong, because we are all humans, they do the best they can to make it right. The drinks: A lot of fun, great season rotations and if you get a chance to talk to Tyson (co-owner) and do a tour, you'll be introduced to the wonderful mad scientist world that is Skaalveen.

Yelp
WOW! That is all I can say. This hidden gem is located in a row of businesses / warehouses. When I arrived, I was worried I had pulled into the wrong place even though there are signs everywhere stating I was at the correct location. When you walk in, its like going into an old office building. As soon as the doors opened to Skaalvenn, my jaw dropped! What a beautiful distillery, and A+++++++++++++ customer service! It smelled so nice inside. We made reservations, the website encouraged it especially for the weekend. I arrived about an hour early and the owner was so sweet and ready to take us to our cute cozy table. She gave us a little info on how her and her husband travelled to Japan and fell in love. She went over all their drinks and what they distilled there. I ordered the Fjord Horse, which is their take on a moscow mule. OMG, DELICIOUS! The taste, the presentations, everything was amazing! I also tried the Rhu-Barb Benson, their take on an Old Fashion. OMG, the BEST I have ever had. I am not sure anything else will compare. The staff was sooooo sweet and nice. When I say amazing customer service, this place has it down and I highly doubt other places would compare. Highly, highly recommending coming here. You will NOT be disappointed. Thank me later :)

Yelp
Looking for original, fun, fresh cocktails featuring exceptional house distilled spirits (without having to head into the city)?! Skaalvenn Distiller, located in Brooklyn Park, is the spot to be. The cocktail lounge feels almost like a speakeasy. The space is quietly located in an otherwise industrial building. The space is low lit with subtle yet warming light. The setting is intimate with small pockets of seating. Each with the own individual feels of the space. All within view of the gorgeous bar. The drinks are AMAZING and it all starts with the spirits. Skaalvenn has offers vodka, rum, aquavit, and bourbon. Which, outside of the cocktail room, can be found at most local liquor stores and bars. I recommend the "In Fashion" made with bourbon, yuzu, and ginger; as well as the "Swedezerac" made with aquavit, anise, ginger, and apple. Skaalvenn Distillery's cocktail lounge is a top pick for me and I love the big city feels.

Shelly M.

Yelp
The best cocktails I have ever tasted. The place has an amazing vibe especially since the outside looks like an 80s office building. They aren't cheap, but totally worth it! Need to try some food next time.

Yelp
The cocktails were super refreshing. Andrew was awesome. This man went out of his way to make us fries (not on the menu btw). He also made us this very delicious "freestyle" drink (also not on the menu). When you get there, the exterior of the building looks bland but once inside, its super intimate. It's a great place for a date, girl chat or guy chat.

Service was great, very friendly. We had to make a reservation and we got a pretty cool spot that seats 6 ppl. The drinks were good. They alone had a couple appetizers options. But the ones we ordered were good. I would recommend and I would go back.

Yelp
Delicious drinks and unique environment! In random business building but a hidden gem in Brooklyn Park.

Yelp
Y'all. The cocktails are ineffable, my mind is blown. Once you walk through the odd office building you'll find the lounge at the end of the hallway. It feels like a place St from SNL would describe due to it's impressive cocktails, odd location, and beautiful decor/overall vibe. The staff were lovely and the owners were so welcoming and informative. The bartenders hand delivered our drinks and explained the ingredients. I had an infusion which was a new take on an old fashioned with bourbon and yuzu. It came out with bubbles that were fused with citrus. The Milk Tyson still has me shook. Who even thinks of putting milk in a centrifuge and clarifying it to make the most delicious creamsicle cocktail?! My friend had a cosmo and a charred pineapple rum drink (don't remember what they were called) and they were also amazing. They were each so uniquely crafted that they were literally the best cocktails I've had. Thank you Skaalven for really upping the cocktail game in the twin cities! Ps: It felt pretty risqué being indoors during covid-19 but they followed protocol and I felt as safe as I could dining anywhere indoors. The place was spaced out, staff wore masks and gloves, and hand sanitizer was plentiful.

Yelp
This is hands down the coolest distillery tap room I have ever been to. This is one of those places you go and it's just so special. It's not just a distillery or cocktail room. This is an art, passion, and so much more. Tyson and Mary own Skaalvenn which has been around longer than the cocktail room. You can find their spirits all over MN in various Liquor stores. The cocktail room is inspired by their trips to Japan. The vibe is relaxing and calming. The menu is fantastic and so much thought has been poured in to this experience of flavors. This is a must spot when in the cities!

Yelp
Cool little place! Great atmosphere, and knowledgeable mixologists. Worth making a reservation and stopping for a cocktail!

Yelp
Great bartenders & servers... explaining all the drink options. The establishment allows outside food though we saw some awesome in house appetizers. The location is odd being in a quasi warehouse building yet they have good directional signage which we used to go directly to the entrance. Keep the good vibes & drinks flowing! Definitely a place which could take you to a Las Vegas style establishment.

Yelp
This place is in a really unexpected area. When you walk in, the building is like an old office building. You have to follow signs down a long hall and then you're met with a door with a keypad, but it's open and you go inside and it's a complete transformation from old office or church hall to an edgy, modern bar. I think there's even smoke machines, but it's very light- not overwhelming at all. The owners work at the place and are really friendly. Any staff you see can assist you with your order, so there's not necessarily the same person serving you. Most of the time it was I believe tho. The brought hot towels when we sat down which was nice. We tried the flight with aquavit, bourbon, and rum, the great bam bam dino (comes w mini fruity pebble Rice Krispie bar), and the Japanese style highball. They were all tasty, just wish you got a bit more bang for your buck. Menu is also a pretty tiny. If any of these interest you tho, it's a great spot.

Yelp
We have been meaning to come here for a while now. I was blown away. The decor, the atmosphere, and especially the SERVICE is unmatched. What a gem to come to the area. The drinks are top notch, explorative, and balanced. Definitely will be back as soon as possible. Thank you Skaalvenn for the amazing experience! I regret not taking more pictures! Also, the music (late 90's-early 2000's)... game changer!!!

Yelp
**GO HERE!**Upon arriving we were a little confused, looked like a typical office building but the signage was great so there was no problem finding the distillery. It was really cool walking into, felt like an old school speakeasy. We entered, its dimly lit and feels somewhat exclusive because there is not a lot of seating nor a lot of people. The decor is A1- candles/ great artwork/hanging plants/nice bar/etc. Again the place is lit mostly by candlelight- which really sets the tone. The drinks are AMAZING. I only tried two, The Fjord Horse because I am a moscow mule lover and the Milk Tyson which was an amazing refreshing orange dreamsicle for adults. Of course, the beauty of the drinks are always worth the price because I am just like that but they are a little more costly, especially considering the beautiful ice took up most of the glass. Again, totally worth it. The service was TOP NOTCH- I love the whole -squat down and take the time to explain, type servers and Matthew did just that. There is really no food- great place for after/before dinner drinks- we did get the candied nuts because my husband was hungry- them were great. And the music was 100% Fantastic! We honestly thought they seen our play lists because it was just a great mixture of different (excellent) songs. I will absolutely be back!

Yelp
Drinks are amazing and the ambiance is very intimate! Always bring family and friends here from out of town and never a disappointment! Highly recommend! Can be hard to find but, just understand, it's a true speakeasy vibe! Once you find this place you won't forget it!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! I had a cocktail hour here and I was so impressed! First of all the service was amazing! Our waiter was Bryce! He was so nice and helpful. This was our first visit so we had a lot of questions. He was so patient and answered all of our questions. Now to the drinks I had a fruity pebbles drink it was so good! And two other drinks that was so delicious! I definitely recommend you make reservations because the place is small. But don't let the fact that it's small make you not want to come. It's super cute and over all a great place to hang out! But you have to see for yourself! I will definitely be back!! Thank you for amazing service and drinks!!

Yelp
Immediately upon being seated, staff welcomed us with hot scented towels and water glasses. Service was friendly and quick. The drinks were beautifully made and the staff took the time to explain how each drink was made - amazing the thought and effort out into each drink. Super cool environment in the middle of an industrious builsing Tables were socially distanced, staff were wearing masks.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing service!! I the relaxed feel and the "cocktail" selection is on par for one of the best places to have a unique, one of a kind experience. A true hidden gem amongst an otherwise ordinary business building. Even though our reservation was for 90 minutes, it didn't feel rushed, and my friends and I were able to enjoy our time together. Will be coming back here many times especially seeing that they are less than 15 minutes from my place

Yelp
Never have I ever had a drink a didn't like at Skaalven. The atmosphere is amazing, the bartenders are so friendly and the drinks are the best I've ever had anywhere in the world. (I've been to Dubai, Singapore, Bahrain, etc) IF YOU HAVENT BEEN HERE YOU ARE MISSING OUT.

Yelp
I've been to some excellent craft cocktail bars in the twin cities but this is hands down the best one and it is not easy to find this place but that won't at all deter me from returning. The atmosphere, the music, and the carefulness and complexity put in the drinks all combine to provide a great experience. Menu is constantly evolving and the mixologists take pride in the excellence in the taste and flavor of each drink. This is a must go!

Yelp
My all time new cocktail spot. Stunning space, drinks, and service. I can't recommend this place enough.

Yelp
So basically, you have to go here. I brought my BF here for his birthday after seeing pictures of the bar on Instagram and guys, the picture does not do this place justice. It's beautiful inside! And I highly, HIGHLY recommend a seat at the bar. The guys are wonderful! Bryce, Dirk, and Nelson will take care of you! Tyson and Mary are the owners and they are so sweet. Tyson greeted us at the door and walked us to our seats while giving us a history on his distillery and their trip to Japan. Mary is super sweet and so, so kind. The drinks, which I can't put into words other than phenomenal. They're so inspiring; you really just have to try them for yourself. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
What a gem in the rough. Located in an industrial park, once you walk the halls to get to the cocktail room, this distillery has an amazing ambiance inside. Great music. Great cocktails. Bring your own snacks. The owners, Tyson and Mary, are so lovely and focused on the customer experience. Very Covid safe as well.

Yelp
One of best cocktail nights of my life. The owners of the distillery are lovely and the service was amazing. I definitely recommend visiting!

Yelp
To start, I know you will be curious of our date and time of my one-star experience. Let me save you the trouble - this last Saturday, about 7PM. I will leave my most honest review, please do not feel the need for a response as it will not change anything. Yes, it did take about 20 minutes for a cocktail, which some would find abysmal. Yes, we did have one good server, who did a great job of fixing the issue, but unfortunately it was overshadowed by the other who insulted our group not once, but four times. Comments about not being the "age" for the place, and to get a credit card that swipes better is just weird. By the way, if we want to talk about "age" I am not sure what crowd can, or wants to, afford a $17 drink in the burbs with no city view and a community restroom that brings me back to grade school. Now, to the owner. If you aren't open to feedback, don't put your number on the menu. And when a customer does reach out, maybe have a better response then "it sounds like we're just not the place for you". Utter disappointment from people who love to spend money on overpriced cocktails, in the burbs. P.S. checking camera footage of customers tables is a bit creepy

Yelp
This place is amazing! First time visiting and the drinks and staff were both phenomenal. The bartenders are incredibly talented & passionate about finding you a beverage you will enjoy. Located in a very unique building, makes it feel like you're stepping into a speakeasy. Overall great experience and will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Loved my first visit here! Such a unique spot with amazing cocktails. Everyone who worked there was so friendly and I love that they all work together on the tables so you can flag down anyone and they can help you. Tried 4 of their cocktails and can't wait to try more in the future!
