"Charming hotels are simply hard to find, but Skalakot Manor, a beautiful black modern farmhouse, checks all the boxes (wallpaper, vintage light fixtures, needlepoint!)."

Skalakot Manor | Best places to stay in Iceland

"There’s one compelling reason to stay at this manor house on the south coast – it’s one of the top places to experience Icelandic horse riding. Located on a working farm, the triple-gabled timber building offers elegant, traditionally furnished rooms, some tucked in under the eaves, others with spoils like clawfoot bath tubs or Nespresso machines. The views over the surrounding countryside are superb, and there’s a refined restaurant and spa, too. Various horseback trips are on offer, from 1-hour introductory rides, to half-day trips to Irarfoss, Eyjafjalla and local beaches, and multi-day rides deep into the Icelandic wilds. You can also snowmobile to the famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano (2-3 hours, ideal for beginners), and hike on the Solheimajokull glacier. " - Oliver Berry

We did not stay at this hotel, but we came to do a 1 hour horseback ride. We had a great experience. Our guide, who had just arrived days earlier from Denmark, was well versed on Iceland. She gave good commentary as we rode, and she was excellent with our family and the horses. They were very accommodating with scheduling our ride (and we just called in the morning for an afternoon ride that same day). It was a rainy day, and they provided adequate rain gear as well. I would highly recommend.

The view from the hotel is great. Also so good and romantic restaurant. There horses are the best and today was a mother and baby horse together then there is a hidden canyon with beautiful waterfalls

We went for dinner (2 adults and 1 kid) . The staff was friendly and very welcoming, especially Dimitrios that made the evening more enjoyable. The food was amazing, the trout was well presented, congratulations to the chef.|I'll definitely come back and for sure recommend.

Wow! Everything just perfect. The room, the location, the people (especially Michael and Aliz - sorry, i know got her name wrong!). You have warm, friendly, chatty hosts who make you feel so welcome. Delicious food. Beautifully designed manor and rooms. Quirky and cute. Fantastic spa with gorgeous views. Incredible hiking trails off the property that no one else walks (so good for those who want to hike and feel the depth of mother nature) - you are just a couple hours hike away from the glaciers, or just a few minutes to a beautiful canyon. Fantastic spot to be central to most places in the southern coast (I spent 3 nights in the south and could have doen more!). I was a solo traveler this time, but I can't wait to come back with my family. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

What a great place. The staff was excellent. The food was outstanding. The Skalakot is located out in farm country. Beautiful setting, very peaceful. With the ocean in the foreground and the mountains in the background, you couldn't ask for more. The spa was wonderful. The horseback riding was a blast. They have many horses to ride ( 150 I was told) to the beach or the mountains. It's 2 1/2 hours from the airport, but it is well worth the trip. Wanted to go fishing, but the weather did not cooperate. My Daughter and I truly had a great time.....

We had such a wonderful stay at Skalakot. We thought we might be a little out of the way, but we loved the location. It's quieter than some of the more touristy places and being so close to the sites of Vik and the surrounding area was great. The rooms are comfortable and the food is good. Best of all though is the service. Everyone was so ready to help and made us feel so welcome. We started each morning with a visit to the horses. They're beautiful and a special part of the stay. We loved it!

The food wasn't bad, but it lacked flavor. The service was poor—you could tell the waitress was kind, but she was clearly overwhelmed, with too much to handle on her own, and couldn't focus on providing good service. After finishing our meal, we waited 15 minutes before deciding to go to the counter and ask for the check. We ended up wasting a lot of time on our last day of vacation

We stayed in the Master Suite. Wonderfully decorated, very spacious. Balcony with gorgeous view. Super friendly staff. Very nice hot tub and sauna. And great restaurants.
