I arrived at Skillet Diner's Seattle/Harbor Steps location at Noon on a September weekday she very hungry. When I reached the door I noticed a temporary sign stating that they were closed until noon for a private party. Just as I was wondering if I'd have to dine elsewhere, a gentleman in "blacks" stepped up, menu in hand greeted me, removed the sign and asked where would I like to sit. I chose a deuce next to a window.
The gentleman also was my server, he set down the menu, took my coffee order and quickly returned with a mug of fresh, hot coffee. There was a set-up, water glass and water carafe on the table.
The breakfast menu is a nice variety of classic breakfast dishes plus a burrito, a small array of breakfast sandwiches and one that caught my eye, Chicken and Waffle. My server, Juan, answered a few menu questions before I settled on the Chicken and Waffle.
As I waited for my meal, Juan kept my mug filled with steamy, hot, decaf coffee. It's all I drink, as I can't handle caffeine. In many restaurants decaf is an afterthought. It is often not VG coffee, nor is it fresh or hot! Skillet uses a good quality decaf which hit all the right notes for me.
Breakfast quickly arrived. The chicken thigh was cooked crisp and tender with 2 basted eggs, that were nicely done, all atop a firm, cornmeal waffle. This is a more savory waffle than the typical breakfast item. It is a nice complement to the chicken and eggs(a mother and child reunion!?). The dish is served with plenty of butter and maple syrup on the side, which made for a sweet waffle indulgence after I polished off the chicken and eggs(A pleasant reunion it was...).
After one more refill and browse thru the days news I was ready for a walk around the new Pike Place Market Overlook and a stroll thru the market itself before catching the light rail home.
Skillet is good, if not inexpensive breakfast fun. Juan's friendly, attentive service, along with the tasty food, made for an enjoyable dining experience at Skillet.
