Sky Bar – Sudbury, Massachusetts - Gastro Obscura

"When the candy company Necco went bankrupt in 2018, it put its sweet, sweet intellectual property up for auction. While the confectioner was well known for its chalky wafers, Louise Mawhinney had a more pressing concern: Would the world never know another Sky Bar? A chocolate bar introduced in 1938 when an airplane spelled out its name in the sky, the Sky Bar was an innovative candy bar, and remained unusual through Necco’s demise in 2018. Opening a Sky Bar’s cheery yellow wrapper revealed four chocolate-coated chambers, each containing a different flavor: caramel, peanut, vanilla, and fudge. Tipped off by one of the customers at her gourmet-food shop in suburban Sudbury, Mawhinney bid on the rights to the Sky Bar. Most of the Necco oeuvre was snapped up by candy giants such as Spangler, maker of orange Circus Peanuts. But Mawhinney bagged her bar, a win that came with decades of different Sky Bar recipes. Luckily enough, a location next door to her food shop became available, and is now the site of the Sky Bar’s triumphant return. With the help of a former Necco vice president (and fellow Sky Bar fan), she figured out how to manufacture the chocolates on a 3-D printer-esque machine that is a fraction of the size of the line that once churned out Sky Bars for a global fan base. With the help of her employees’ taste buds, she chose a 1970s Sky Bar recipe to resurrect, which most tasters find superior to the 2018 version. The opening of the shop, also called Sky Bar, in 2019 was warmly welcomed, attracting New England press as well as dazed drivers who pulled over for a bite of nostalgia. The shop also offers retro candies, tees, and games. But the Sky Bars are the star attraction, and if you come at the right time, you can watch the candies coming off the line, injected full of four nostalgic flavors. Know Before You Go You can order Sky Bars through the store's website, although due to high demand, quantities for shipment are currently limited. The shop is closed on Mondays." - TheDiscoveryService, Mina Murray, Alex Mayyasi

Google
They had Skybars and that's what I wanted. I bought a whole box. Love 'em and glad they are back.

This is a very interesting store. They sell some candy that is not readily available anymore; Sky Bar, Chocolate Necco Wafers, and others. They sell cooking supplies and wine. Extremely nice/polite staff.

I used to consume Skybars and an alarming rate when I was younger until I found out that they stopped production. I was so disappointed, thinking I would never see or taste again, what quite possibly is, the most delicious candy in the history of mankind. The world had other plans however, and the iconic Skybar from years past has been reborn. Its great to see this wonderful business stepping in to continue production. I consumed enough Skybars to down a small child immediately upon receiving the package at 1100 am this morning, with each bar tasting even more delicious then the last. They got it spot on its EXACTLY the same. Folks this is not a hoax, the legend lives on! LONG LIVE SKYBAR!!!

If it were organic. We are in 2022 I noticed on the ingredients it's the same thing it's AMERICAN GARBAGE. I avoid anything with corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, etc. only the lower class and poor Americans buy this and eat this junk. Like Hebert chocolate and all other commercial products. Diseases and famine plagues. HA HA.

The owner is very friendly and the production facility fascinating. I bought a great Sky Bar t-shirt and of course a box of Sky Bars. They're actually of much better quality than the original bar, which was more satisfying in concept than execution. Now the chocolate and other flavors fulfill the promise!

It's an experience. The owners have turned this simple candy bar into an experience. You can see the bars being made, all the time in a lovely looking candy store with a huge selection. The fact it connects to Duck Soup is a huge plus.

Yelp
Skybar is literally the best chocolate candy bar in the world. A couple years ago when NECCO went under, a small kitchen/food store named Duck Soup acquired the Skybar recipe, intellectual property and production equipment at auction. It took some time but they eventually expanded their space and got the bars back into production. I waited far too long to visit!! They taste amazing. To me, there are some minor differences in flavor to the original - the most notable being the caramel. It is now more noticeably salted however its thinner and tastes better quality than the Necco original. The vanilla section doesn't seem as strong in flavor as the original. However I believe the quality of the milk chocolate is better. I believe the pros outweigh the cons and its amazing they are even available!! This space is a combination production and retail space with a glass barrier leaving the customer full view of the process! There's also a bunch of swag for sale as well. If you love or even just like Skybars, you need to show your support and head out here to buy some candy and merch!!!

Yelp
AN ABSOLUTELY MUST DO! A FREE EVENT & FREE PARKING! THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF THE SKY BAR CANDY BAR! You can watch the candy being made here! With so many closings all over the country of restaurants & iconic places; it's nice to hear the word RESCUED back in our Vocabulary once again. Do I hear The Martha & The Vandella's song "Dancing in he Street" playing in the background. LOL! In 1938 The Necco Candy Company an American Candy Company located in Boston introduced the world to The Sky Bar Candy Bar. It became extremely popular in its heyday as well as a fan favorite of the 60s, 70s, 80s generations. In 2018 The Necco Candy Company filed for bankruptcy & closed its doors. People were very sad & upset about the news - one of the oldest Candy companies in America was out of business. Well the name Sky Bar went up for Auction. Louise Mawhinney bought the name Sky Bar & it was Rescued. Louise also Rescued another company next door called Duck Soup a few years back. Well Louise thought that was it. Well as fate would have it Louise ended up meeting one of the former employees of Necco Jeff Green VP of Necco & he told her she could make the candy herself. Necco had old machines. This brand new small facility is totally high tech & produces FRESH Sky Bars. It is both a manufacturing facility & a retail store all in one in Mill Village in Sudbury MA. The Sky Bar has 4 sections each with a different filling Caramel, Vanilla, Peanut ( Teddie Peanut Butter another Boston company) & Fudge all covered in Milk Chocolate. They make a new batch every couple of days so they are probably the Best Sky Bars you have ever tasted - Fresh as can be. Every Saturday at 11 AM they make the Sky Bars & you can watch through the glass windows the whole candy making process for FREE. It's like a Giant 3D Printer. They also make them 2 or so times during the week at the 11 AM time slot as well. You can call & find out what days they are making the candy during the week that you are coming here. They also sell Merch with Sky Bar T Shirts & Baseball Caps. There is a vintage video of the old Necco candy making facility you can watch too. They even have a model train that circles the store. All the Sky Bars are stacked in the original Necco wooden crates which is So Cool! You can purchase the bars individually in the store for $1.98 each & you can also order a box of 24 online. They also sell a lot of other Retro Candy & Merch in here too. There is Free Parking in the back. I talked to one of the employees in here & they told me people have driven 2 & 1/2 hours just to come here & buy their favorite candy bar Sky Bar that they thought was gone forever & said it was totally worth the trip! It used to be, you had to have mega bucks & be really rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Yelp
Best candy bar ever. When NECCO closed, a small business in Sudbury MA bought Sky Bar and thankfully kept it alive!

Yelp
They've perfected the Skybar Candy Bar to perfection. That's the great news. The sad news is two-fold... 1) it's still not available many places, and 2) that's probably because the price has QUADRUPLED in some places!! That's FOUR times higher than when NECCO sold them. I used to buy a box of 24 bars for $18 from the Tilton, NH Market Basket That's only 75 cents / per bar. I just saw on eBay (general search will bring it up) the only site selling 4 bars for $20. That's $5 per candy bar! OUTRAGEOUS! That's far more expensive than a pound of fudge... anywhere. Even on Sudbury's home page (who makes the candy bars now) at https://www.skybarcandy.com/ ,they're selling direct at $47.52 per 24 count box (unknown S&H costs). That's $2 / per candy bar! Even higher IF you pay for S&H. Sudbury, MA, you need to lower the price! Even the one local candy shop pays your full retail price, so they're making only 50 cents profit per bar - at most.
