Where to Find Atlanta’s Best Cantonese Food | Eater Atlanta

"Evoking a classic Hong Kong diner, Best BBQ pays homage to traditional Cantonese cuisine with a standout siu yuk (roast pork) celebrated for exceptionally crispy skin achieved by slow-roasting scored pork belly seasoned with salt, sugar, and five-spice, resulting in moist, flavorful meat with a perfect sweet-and-savory balance." - Susie Chow

Google
A little out of place as it is located closer to the center of the grocery store as opposed to where the other food court places. Overall very tasty and for the bbq pork over rice, probably the cheapest price option compared to others in the plaza. Would come back for the bbq pork, for the other meats over rice I may lean towards other places as the prices then becomes similar and then the taste is slightly better. Came back again to give these locations another try. This time around for here was disappointing. While barely cheaper the quantity dropped and the quality didn’t really rise up to make up for it.

I was discriminated. If you arnt Vietnamese, they will skip over you and service viet speakers first. This place use to be different under the old owners. Dont be fooled.

Driving back to Nashville from Savannah - I wanted to make sure I grabbed some roast duck because I have yet to find any good places in Nashville. I was a bit confused on where Sky BBQ was because there’s also a Ty BBQ which is also located in the same area. Anyway, Sky BBQ is located in the market at stall #16. A roast duck runs $31 and comes with sauce. I had a few pieces in the car and this is legit! It’s one of the best roast duck I’ve ever had. I will definitely come back to get more when I’m in town.

Loved the duck! I had it at my friends birthday party and it was really flavorful. The cashier named Steven is also really helpful and funny.

Google
Currently the BEST prices for a whole roast duck in town. $30 a pop, we bought four this past week. Highly recommend, we will be back for more

I GUESS IF YOUR NOT ASAIN YOU DONT GET TREATED WITH RESPECT HERE Went in yesterday first time seeing this place the duck in the case caught my attention they had a older male working I asked for a menu and he rudely said they didn’t have one and walked away I I tried to get his attention again to ask about pricing on the ducks and he completely ignored me and started yelling in his language COSTUMER SERVICE DEFINITELY RUINED THIS EXPERIENCE

I LOVE the roast pig at this place. This is inside the Assi but not in the food court. They also have roast ducks and geese hanging and ready.

Google
WOW, fantastic hidden gem this is the spot for the Chinese BBQ The meat looked really great, so one day we gave a shot. And WOW, The BEST pork and the duck and char siu amazing delicious is great when you look at the picture you are going to imagine a taste... BUT... when you finally get it.. IT'S going to be better than you could ever dream of ... I recommend this food 1000%

Yelp
Our first visit. We will definitely be back. It was very busy. A Sunday. Everyone that was there seemed to know the deal. We could have had a more well rounded experience but there is aleays an opportunity to go back. All of the foods reminded me of my family, my father especially who always ordered Chinese roast duck that was served cut up. It was PERFECT. GREASY SOY DELICIOUS. I did bring some home to share grudgingly with my husband. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
This cantonese bbq place is a hidden gem that is not so hidden anymore, so here is my over-due review. This is some of the best roasted duck I can find in Atlanta. We have tried over 10 different chinese/cantonese bbq, and Sky BBQ's roasted duck just hit differently. It is very juicy and flavorful and no foul smell from a poorly prepped duck like many other places. I find myself getting a whole duck every other week here. Their prices are pretty hard to beat also.

Yelp
Everything is good! Nice and clean! Food is always fresh and delicious! Make sure go early, otherwise you'll leave empty handed.

Yelp
I stopped by here for lunch and had the roast pork and roast duck over rice. Pros: n/a Cons: The roast pork skin was not crispy at all and very soggy. All the pieces that I got had a lot of fat marble on it, so there was barely any meat. The roast duck was very bland and did not have any flavor at all.

Yelp
Our favorite spot for roasted pork and duck. It is a family ran establishment and they are always friendly and patient with us whether we order 1lb or a whole pig. I believe they have better pricing as well compared to others in the area. Their location is a little hidden and you'd kinda have to go out your way but I always feel it's worth it. Over the years their menu has also become very limited but we've always only ordered the roasted pork and duck. Maybe once or twice, the chicken. The combo plates are also very good. A substantial portion of fresh food. Nothing processed. And for a great price!

Ping L.

Yelp
SCAM: ordered half duck to go. they scammed me: when I got home found 2legs and other small pieces - no chest part. overall portion is so small. never eat or shop at this place if you don't want to be scammed!

Yelp
I have been going to this place for a lonnnng time. The meats are good and flavorful. I always get the roasted duck from them. The prices are relatively reasonable compared to other places. For example, I paid $13 + tax on the 2 meat with rice plate. It's very hard to find anything under $15 nowadays... and it was delicious!

Aleson X.

Yelp
Communication was there and everything went smoothly. Although I'm not of a male pork person they did well mixing the meat up.

Yelp
Their duck is phenomenal!!! Very juicy and super flavorful. Highly recommend. It's already ready (hanging on display) when you order and they chop it up for you. The portion easily feeds about 3 adults. I'll buy again. The soy sauce chicken is okay. I thought inside the chicken was lacking flavor. I highly recommend the duck.

Yelp
Decent and good value and varieties. I won't say they are great but expectations for Asian food aren't high, and they beat expectations.

Yelp
My new favorite cantonese bbq spot in the Atlanta area. I still go to Ming's or Best BBQ because they are closer but if I'm in the Duluth area I stop by Sky for a roast duck and some char siu. It's priced a little cheaper and it's a little hard to find the first time you go since there's a food court inside a supermarket.
google avatar

Clifford C.

Yelp
This place is located inside of the ASSI supermarket on Pleasant Hill Road (off of exit 104). located all the way on the far left hand side, but within the supermarket itself. They have the criteria to be a real Chinese food place, as they have the hanging char siu (Roast pork), Siu yuk (Roast Pig), peking duck, as well as soy sauce chicken. The 'bodega' is quite small, and has a kitchen in the back, however the real good food is the one that is hanging in the window. The prices are reasonable, and has an "A" rating...(which doesn't mean much to me, especially coming from NY where ratings meant nada! 2 meats, veggies over rice is around $8.00 if you have more than 3 people, i would recommend ordering ala carte, as you will get more for your money. There is a small sit down area outside of the supermarket, where there is a small food court.

Yelp
By 1pm, most of the food is sold out. If you can't make it by then, I highly recommend ordering early on in the day as the restaurant will save a portion for you. This spot is located to the left of the aisle behind the checkout counter to the farthest left. You'll have to go around some kitchen appliances to find it. It's worth the search. The BBQ here is delicious. I can't speak for anything else as each time I visit, I am side tracked by the gluttonous, fatty, crispy, salty, fine goodness of the roast pork. I love to wrap it in a scallion pancake or bao with some hoisin and simply ravish. It's cooked perfectly, not too fatty, the skin is always superbly crispy. The meat is tender and moist and the fatty layer between the skin and meat is not too thick, harmonizing the various textures in a singular bite. The duck is delicious as well. My father loves it and claims it's the best in GA.

Yelp
This place is so unassuming. Located inside the old Assi/now new City Farmer's Market lies a delicious Hong Kong style BBQ stall. The stall is located on the left side of the store near the household supplies. Roast ducks, roasted pig, soy chicken, and BBQ pork are hung on hooks. You can order half or whole roast duck or soy chicken in addition to BBQ pork and roast pig by the pound. I ordered 1 pound of BBQ pork for about $10 and 1 whole roast duck for about $21. Not bad considering I don't have to cook it. Definitely worth the purchase if you're in the area. Employees speak English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese. *They take credit cards for orders more than $10.

Yelp
I came to Sky BBQ after reading reviews on Yelp. It's located inside the supermarket on the leftish side, where the food court and supermarket meet. They accept credit card only for purchases above $10. I ended up ordering a pound of roast pork, a whole duck, and whole soy sauce chicken. Service was friendly and they quickly chopped up my items. Prices weren't too expensive. I probably spent around $40 total, which ended up giving me at least 10 meals worth. The skin on the pork was the perfect amount of crispy and somehow still managed to retain its crispiness after reheating it the next day. The duck and chicken were both flavorful and moist. The accompanying sauce (my gf said it was some kind of plum sauce) was also tasty and I ended up using the leftover in other meals I made. I would definitely come here again for more of their roasted goodness :)

Yelp
Definitely the place for roasted pork, soya chicken and all kinds of to-go bbq. I think you can order the whole roasted pork. I have not done that but I will when I have a big party.

Yelp
This place is a bit hard to find . It's located inside the ASSi market on aisle 16 next to the Bakery. I had order 2 dishes form them the roast duck over rice and the Hong Kong style wonton noodle soup. The duck was really good. It was a sizeable portion of meat served on top of rice that was mixed with some of the duck gravy. The meat had great flavor and coupled with the gravy made for a wonderful dish. I found the noodle soup was a bit lacking in almost all areas. The soup stock was boring and didn't have much of a flavor and the wontons were a bit over cooked ( a bit mushy). The only other element to the dish was noodles which were ok . So in short stick to the rice dishes. I will be going back to try out the other dishes on the menu and the other restaurants in the ASSi mart.

Yelp
Food is delicious and cheap, boss lady is nice, and they are the only few open on covid19, clean, delicious, afforadable.

Yelp
I love roasted pork from this place. This is the best BBQ pork in the metro Atlanta. The owner, Ms. Kate is super friendly. I have 2 kids so I can't always make it when the BBQ pork is available but if I call to ask Ms. Kate to save me a pound of two, she's always willing to do so. The roasted pork sold out very quick on the weekends. They also have flat duck if request in advance. My 2 years old son loves the BBQ pork from here too. He could eat 1/2lb if I keep feeding him with the freshly chopped meat that's still warm. Yummy!!!!

Jennifer T.

Yelp
I went the store today , try buying two kinds of meat over rice, but the lady just put in not ever 8 pieces of meats , cost almost $11, I'm not going back again . And service is really bad too.

Yelp
Walked into this place on a whim - Stopped by the ASSi supermarket to pick up some groceries and found this restaurant siting by the side of the supermarket next to the bakery store. Very traditional Hong Kong style decoration with the freshly cooked chickens, ducks and whole pig hanging behind the glass display. Overall it looked very clean and organized for a Chinese restaurant. The owners did not speak lots of English but seemed very polite and friendly. Ordered a whole open pressed duck and half soy source chicken, price is very reasonable compare to other BBQ restaurants in Duluth or Chinatown Doraville area. The open pressed duck was cooked just right with insanely crispy and delicious skin, with tender and juicy meat. The half chicken was at a very good price and just tasted like what I had a couple of years ago in Hong Kong. The food I ordered was beyond reproach and I'd highly recommend it.

Yelp
Warning about their business hours! They are not open on Wednesdays or holidays. I had to try three times to get some because they just sounded so good! They are in the middle of the Assi supermarket. They do not have seating, you just wait in front of their display and once you're done checking out you can go through the assi checkout and sit in the food court if you want. I got the duck, char siu, and crispy pork. The duck was by far their best dish, so flavourful! Be forewarned though that there are a lot of bones so if you can't handle meat with bones then pass on the duck. The char siu was interesting in that it was a lot more lightly seasoned than traditional charsiu and was not the usual fireball red color but rather a golden brown. It did say honey bbq so many they use a slightly different cooking method. Still good though! The crispy skin pork was a little disappointing because the skin wasn't actually crispy but still good! Every serving comes on a giant bed of rice with some greens and is splashed by a delicious beef broth from a pot. Three servings totaled up to $20, such great value! I will definitely come again and maybe just get three servings of the duck!

Yelp
meh.. I've seen this place before but never tried it. I had the roast duck and char siew (BBq pork). The problem with Asian BBQ is a matter of freshness. Most places, including this, sells bbq that is made much earlier. Unfortunately, its not the same as fresh and out of the oven. There isn;t a place in ATL that does enough volume to have fresh BBQ. Its not bad BBQ, but it isn't exactly the best.
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down, the best BBQ Pork and Roast Duck! It's definitely a hidden gem so I'm spreading the words! They have roast duck, duck tongues, pork, tofu etc...You can order a whole roasted pig there also. If you want extra duck sauce, it's $1.00 a container, but well worth it. It's delicious! For the duck tongues, you have to wait 10-15 minute to cook but really worth the wait. I love how the lady chops my duck. If you eat enough roast duck, chopping is kind of a big deal... There's this meat to bone ratio that she's gotten down, I'm not kidding

Yelp
The best chinese roast duck and soy sauce chicken in the south. The owners of Sky BBQ have been in the Atlanta chinese restaurant scene for a long time, working at other restaurants previously. The owner perfected the recipe and opened shop here serving some amazing cantonese BBQ. A whole chicken will run you about $8, and it's the most moist and tender poached chicken you'll ever taste. If it gets cold, sprinkle some of the sauce and pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds, and it'll be just as good as fresh. If you're a duck fan, you can't miss their roasted duck. It's more expensive than the chicken but still very reasonable for what you're getting! Yum. I have dreams of this duck. No gamey taste at all, and it's so tender! The roasted pork is also very good - especially if eaten fresh with its crispy skin. All of the BBQ here rivals what you'll find in Vancouver, New York, SF, or LA. Tip: Go early because they sell out often! Find it in the store past the food court, across from the cheese section.
google avatar

Reginald W.

Yelp
Ultimately a disappointment. Food probably worth two and a half stars but less because there's no seating other than in a decrepit food court with lots of dirty tables and uncomfortable seating, little communication from the person serving the food at the counter, misleading photographs--the food I got did NOT resemble the photos! Photos show bright green vegetables. We got very yellowed cabbage, as did all the other people in line and everything was served on styrofoam, not ceramic or attractive plastic dishes, as photographed. The food itself, for us, was nothing more than generic Chinese Barbeque. Not bad but nothing special. Rice of mediocre quality. Just a meal...to be eaten because we were hungry. Nothing stood out about this place, food, ambience, service, convenience or anything other than a shabby seating area, remarkable for its shabbiness.--just barely. (Had it been truly shabby, now that would have been fun to talk about!) Oh, well...
google avatar

Yelp
Sky bbq is legit Cantonese style bbq, and probably my fave OTP. Their roast duck and honey bbq pork is my usual order, but the roast pork and soy sauce chicken is just as delicious. Most of the time I order a bunch of meat and the portions can last me a couple of meals, but you can get combos that come with rice, veggies, and your choice of meat. I have yet to try the beef chow fun, but definitely will next time I'm here since other reviewers rave about it. The shop isn't part of the food court, it's actually in the supermarket next to the panaderia. Service is always fast even during the busy weekends.
google avatar

Yelp
Pros: Best duck I've had, can't get enough rice and duck gravy. CHEAP Cons: The duck isn't exactly "fresh", they only accept credit cards for orders over $10 (most dishes are $6-7, the bok choy would be better replaced with some other vegetable. It's not often I go OTP but when I do, I make it a point to go to Sky BBQ if I'm near Duluth (usually on the way home from Jeju spa which is on the same street). I was visiting the Assi Market (very similar to Super H Mart) and decided to get something hot to eat on the way home. It's literally in the grocery store, aisle 16. The counter is usually deserted so you have to ring the bell. I've tried the roast duck, honey pork and the beef chowfun which is a savory flat noodle dish with delicious slices of succulent beef. The duck is really amazing. It's been cooked earlier and they tend to warm it up in the microwave with your rice and bok choy that comes with it but that honestly doesn't hinder the food at all. The duck is some of the best I've ever had. The skin is still crispy and I could eat nothing but the duck juices that they pour over the rice and be completely satisfied. The prices are so cheap I get two orders and save the other for tomorrow's lunch.

Yelp
Get the duck! Go...go now! It's awesome! You can do a half or whole bird. The restaurant itself is a bit hidden in the corner of the supermarket, but worth wondering around the store like an idiot to find it. We haven't been in a while, but my 5year old and I enjoy it on days I don't cook.
google avatar

Denise K.

Yelp
Amazing Cantonese style BBQ! This place is a bit difficult to find though. It is located inside the ASSI market, next to a bakery (not directly in the food court but off to the side). Since it is a food court, you have the option of sitting in there although it isn't the most pleasant experience. I would say, take the food to go and eat it at home or something! I have liked everything that I have tried there! The roast pork is ALWAYS so on point. The skin is always crispy and there is a great skin-fat-meat ratio so it melts in your mouth. The duck is just as amazing. While duck can be a little on the pricey side, it's tender and juicy and meaty at the same time. I haven't tried their chicken yet but I'll be back to try that and the other options on the menu. Definitely give this place a try. You won't regret it at all!

Yelp
When I crave peking duck I come here for their HK style roast duck. Their duck is meatier than the other places. This is the only place I buy whole ducks.

Jayce U.

Yelp
Can't say enough about how delicious and tender their pork is. Both the roast pork and sweet honey bbq pork are cooked perfectly AND at a good price. I've also had their duck which is equally delicious. I have yet to try the open pressed duck but look forward to when I do. Their beef chow fun has the right amount of wok smokiness to it and it's not over-salted. One order reaps a huge portion that's more than enough for a single person. This place is definitely above the other bbq joints in the area.

Kai L.

Yelp
A genuine Hong-Kong-style bbq restaurant tucked in the corner of the Assi Market off Pleasant Hill. Finally, a refreshing taste of authentic Chinese cuisine in the midst of non-authentic Chinese restaurants all over the city. Hands down the best pressed duck you will find in the entire city, even comparable to the way they make it in Hong Kong. I can't order duck anywhere else now because no other place comes even close in comparison. Be sure to go early since they sell out of it by the afternoon. Their bbq pork and roasted pork dishes are a must try as well, but my recommendation is to always get it with a side of duck. If you are feeling adventurous, try the other specialty dishes they have on display, you pretty much can't go wrong.

J.J. L.

Yelp
This place was a shocker. Sky BBQ is a small family-owned Cantonese/Chinese restaurant in the middle of Assi plaza on Pleasant Hill. And... ...well let me cut straight to the chase. Their roasted pressed duck. Never in my life would I imagine finding the best Cantonese pressed duck I've ever had in a small restaurant in Atlanta, and I'm super picky with my duck. The pressed duck ("pei pa duck" in Cantonese) got its name from the way chefs open up the duck and flatten it while roasting and seasoning the bird (as compared to the regular roast duck where the bird is not cut open or flattened), lending it a more lean and crispy texture than regular roasting methods. The meat on the pressed duck at Sky BBQ is juicy and the skin is crispy with the perfect aroma of a pressed roast duck done right. It's served with a special sauce on the side that brings out the flavor even more - don't go overboard though or else you'll mask the duck's natural flavor. Be sure to eat it right away as that's when the skin is at its crispiest. The version here is better or at least just as good as the roast ducks that you'll find in San Fran, LA, Vancouver, even Hong Kong and Macau. I know. I was surprised too. Other than the duck the crispy roast pork is good as well. Their dry beef chow fun is done right also and is not too greasy. A couple of my friends have tried other menu items and have liked them, although I haven't taste tested most of them since I can't get away from the pressed duck. They also have various soy sauce "lo shui" meat and tofu items on display that, if anything else, assured me that the owners are serious about their food (these are hard to make). When you get here, immediately see if they have any more pressed duck available since they run out toward the latter part of the day. Order some either served over rice or by itself and thank me later. Recommendations: Roasted pressed duck, crispy roasted pork, dry beef chow fun.

Yelp
I'd have to agree with the reviews here. I love the roasted deliciousness from this place. Awesome location and awesome food. Good peoples!

Yelp
Honey bbq pork on rice just delicious. Women chopping meat the hardest working woman in Duluth. I love this place when I get over the expressway to Assi. I usually take the food home. It travels very well. Try it you will like it.

Yelp
Loved their soy sauce chicken even tho u gotta be there early sometimes cos they sold out fast.

Yelp
Loved it. Hole in the wall on the far left side of Assi Plaza grocery store. I ordered the lunch combo #2 which was the soy sauce chicken and rice. The chicken was really tender and moist. The meal comes with a ton of rice, a side of greens and a little dipping sauce. They have a $10 minimum to use debit cards so I got a side of pork to go with it. The pork was delicious even though it was a little dry/tough. It seemed more like the pork you find in pork fried rice. The combo was only $6.50 for a ton of food so the price is very nice. Would highly recommend to person who wants to try some authentic Cantonese food.

Minh N.

Yelp
Straight up awesome! Me and my friends always get BBQ stuff here every time we drink. They have duck tongues, BBQ pork & duck, and many HongKong style dish. The price is pretty reasonable too. It's been a while since we started getting BBQ from this place, and we haven't gotten anything but excellence both in quality and customer service.
