My wife and I decided to bike over to Slabtown and give it a shot. We are big fans of Kevin Gillespie and were more than happy to try the replacement for Cold Beer. We chose wisely. We started with drinks. I had the espresso martini and she had the toasted old fashion. Both were excellent. The only complaint was that the martini was on the booze forward section of the menu and the old fashion was not. Our meal started with the Strawberry ricotta toast. It was sweet goodness.
Fortified, we moved to the next round of drinks. I had Old Slab and she had the Thai Lime Gimlet. Both were absolutely outstanding. They rank among the more complex and interesting libations either of us have enjoyed. Mine was rye, sherry, rum. creme frais bois, mole, lapsang, and bitters. I will be spending a lot of time working out the exact proportions. That will be time well spent. Hers had Thai lime gin, elderflower, yellow bell pepper, and lime. Working on that will be additional delightful experimentation.
Realizing food was in order, we got the salmon toast and, on the recommendation of our amazing waiter, the Cuban sandwich. Both were outstanding. The toast was was a rebuilt deconstruction of a great lox bagel. The smoked salmon was wonderful. Much like I have suffered in New York, the cream cheese was a touch heavy handed. I would put the sandwich up against anything I have had in Miami.
Realizing our glasses were empty, we moved onto a final round of cocktails. This was the best decision of the day. I asked our server (I am kicking myself for not getting his name), what we should try that would match the complexity of our previous round. He asked if we liked heat, but not in terms of chili, but ginger. We replied sure. That resulted in my wife getting the Kentucky ginger mule. Bourbon never had it so good. The mix of ginger and sweetness from the Bourbon was perfect. I mentioned that the Sazerac was the drink I often used to rate a bar. He asked Cognac or rye. The question alone made me happy. I asked if they had High West. They only had a High West blend, but the bartender came over to talk about what whiskey were available. I told him to pick. I ended up with the ASW rye. I usually find their alcohols to be underaged and too hash. That was happily not the case.
Not for a lack of trying, I cannot say enough good about our experience.
