SoCal's The Dive bringing the steam kettle trend to The Bay!
Food aside, I thought about the amazing free facials you would get on the daily working BOH.

The Dive is a popular SoCal transplant (Temple City & Irvine) and this is their first NorCal location at the former Slapfish (Westgate West).
Kettle steam cooking started in LV (Chef Michael Ritter) spreading to SoCal...and now San Jo with The Dive. Kettle steam cooking allows for gentle, uniform cooking. No overcooked seafood here.
They're open for takeout, indoor dining, and dog-friendly outdoor dining.
We visited during the first soft opening week for a quiet lunch.

* 1/2 Dozen Oysters // 4 stars
- Kumamoto ($3.75 x3): https://tinyurl.com/2hjucnwj
- Shigoku ($3.50 x3): https://tinyurl.com/47sdb4cd
Fresh, clean oysters with a refreshing, sweet cucumber finish. Served with their housemade green sauce, cocktail sauce, and horseradish. I liked the green sauce, a spicy-tangy herbaceous sauce with chimichurri vibes.
Unfortunately, one of the oysters had sand/broken shell fragments.
* Cheesy Shrimp & Grits w/ creamy andouille sausage sauce, bacon, green onions, mozzarella +cheddar, holy trinity ($13) // 4.5 stars: https://tinyurl.com/yp9zb2ss
Good value and portion, the grits were creamy and flavorful with cheese pulls and savory bacon + sausage bits. The shrimp was large, plump, and perfectly cooked with a nice firm bite.
* House Specialty Pan Roast w/ shredded blue crab, shrimp, mussels, clams, sausage, rice ($28) // 4.5 stars : https://tinyurl.com/595zu4av
-Requested medium spicy
The seafood stew was chockfull of perfectly cooked seafood and slices of spiced sausage in a thick, rich, and creamy tomato sauce. So hearty and satisfying esp with the jasmine rice soaking up the saucy deliciousness. To nitpick, medium spicy was not spicy at all so going HOT next time.
* Lobster Roll w/ toasted brioche, garlic butter, mayo, maine lobster, the dive's cajun spice, fried (MKT - $32) // 5 stars: https://tinyurl.com/ye2ks588
The food was so good so we thought what the hey? Let's try the lobster roll too. It did not disappoint.
Warm, crunchy-soft, buttery brioche bun cradling fresh, meaty pieces of lobster coated in a delicious cajun-spiced butter. No skimping on the lobster. Simple, delicious, and hits different with the cajun spices...adds that kiss of garlicky heat. The accompanying beer battered fries were hot, crunchy, and well-seasoned (not too salty).

Friendly, upbeat, and attentive staff.
We were the only ones in the patio and our sweet server Anh was there when we needed her, making sure our glasses were filled.
The chef even came out to make sure we were enjoying the food.
Food comes out quickly and when ready so I would request for dishes to be staggered for a more leisurely meal.

Overall, for soft opening week, I was really impressed with the execution of the food - perfectly cooked seafood and flavorful, well-spiced cajun/creole dishes (not too salty which is my preference).
The Dive is a great addition to San Jo to get your SEEfood grub on!
