The Best Restaurants to Bring Your Kids in Portland | Eater Portland

"This extremely kid-friendly breakfast joint lets diners make their own pancakes on griddles right at the table, utilizing batter-filled squeeze bottles and adding their choice of fixings like fruit, nuts, and chocolate chips. If the adults at the table aren’t feeling the idea of eating DIY pancakes, Slappy Cakes also has a slew of à la carte options and plates prepared in the kitchen, such as country fried steak, eggs Benedict, and Slappy Hash. Just be careful with the young ones, the griddles can get quite hot." - Rebecca Roland

"Fluffy, soufflé-style Japanese pancakes have recently been taking the states by storm. But in an unexpected reverse commute, Portland’s d.i.y. pancake shop with a rustic, industrial vibe, Slappy Cakes, has exported its interactive concept to Osaka, as well as to Maui, Malaysia, and Singapore."

Google
Great place for kids, we had some fun making designs with our pancakes. We also got the forest mushroom scramble and a bottle of pancake mix. The scramble was good, but the reason to come here is to enjoy making pancake art.

Mad Buy

Google
We ordered the chorizo jalapeno omelette special and a side of potatoes. We were a little disappointed that the special already had potatoes so we ended up with way too many. It seems like an easy thing to comment on when we had first ordered as the potatoes were not listed. Otherwise this was a very clean place with friendly and fast staff. The food comes out rather quickly and obviously as fast as you can make a pancake, you can eat another. It was a really fun experience.

Have you been to Slappy Cakes on Belmont in Portland? If you haven’t, what ya waiting for. It’s the perfect family get-away for a delicious morning start. The moment you walk in, it’s like stepping into a whole new breakfast world experience. From Biscuits and Gravy to Huevos Rancheros to making your very own customized Pancakes. As you can see from the photos, we had a blast of a time. Give them a visit and get your slap-on. Thank you to Trish and her amazing team at Slappy Cakes for providing such a wonderful and delicious time that morning.

Google
Great for kids. Get here early. Fun activity. The ingredients are a bit sparse and ok flavor. You pay for everything so it can be expensive. It'd be nice if they had a set price for batter and pick 4 ingredients, then pay extra for more. The brisket hashbrowns were good but really oily. Service was random but we eventually got everything ordered; the rush was over when we were dining. It was fun for the kids.

Google
This is a great idea for families, especially those with kids. The options outside of the make your own pancakes are pretty good and it was delivered quick! If you want to try their food without the pancakes the bar area didn't have a single person sitting there, so that would be a quick option! The Mushroom Scramble was delicious!

Google
Fun, creative place for breakfast/brunch. Impressive cocktail menu. Truly lovely staff. Wish the home fries weren't deep fried is all. 🤭

Google
Went here on a Saturday at 11 am and had an hour long wait. Took our phone number and walked around and got coffee down the street at Never Coffee and then explored Movie Mayhem while we waited. Food exceeded our expectations and very family/ kid friendly. We had enough room to roll our single stroller to the end of our table as well. Would definitely recommend the lemon curd blueberry pancakes and breakfast burrito.

Dawn Fitzgerald

Google
A fun experience. Make your own pancakes at the griddle on the table. They have different types of batter you can order and then all types of toppings and breakfast sides. They do have a regular menu if you want prepared entrees. The breakfast potatoes were a disappointment, over fried outside, under cooked inside. The service was friendly but a bit inconsistent

Yelp
My friends and I took my kiddo here for our 1st time after soccer. It was a fun place with built in griddles to the table and squeeze bottle batter to make our pancakes. We got a little creative with the designs and my son loved it. We also ordered the hash and chicken fried steak , both were delicious. The staff was super friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Super busy location especially on weekends and they don't take reservations, which can be a challenge. That being said we were still seated within 30-40minutes, which is definitely not the longest I've had to wait for a Sunday Brunch. Definitely a fun and unique spot for Brunch. The idea of being able to make your own pancakes is a fun and interactive idea that translates super well. We had their seasonal flavor (Red Velvet Cherry) which was good, but I couldn't really taste cherry. Toppings are a little spendy, but they do come in a good serving size (we just didn't end up using all of them which felt like a waste). Besides the pancakes, the food is still amazing. We both had a country fried steak which was phenomenal. Potatoes were crunchy but soft on the inside. Cubed steak was a little chewy at times but the batter was amazingly flaky! And scramble was nice and fluffy!

Yelp
DIY Pancakes! What more could you ask for?! I absolutely love this place! You can choose your flavor of pancake batter and you have plenty of options for fixings/toppings! There's also plenty of other food options as well if you're not a fan of pancakes. I highly recommend the avocado toast or the avocado pesto benedict. It can be a bit loud when crowded but honestly it didn't bother me.

Yelp
My FAVORITE breakfast place!! It's always super busy so usually there is a wait and parking kinda sucks in that area so plan ahead! The service is usually great the pancakes are great and it's a pretty good deal! The juices taste super fresh. Such a nice place to take someone to show them the great things Portland has to offer
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great time designing and decorating pancakes with loved ones at brunch yesterday. Food and service were wonderful. However!! Would love to see ICED TEA on the menu, especially when it's so hot out (and warm inside). Thanks for being so fun, Slappy Cakes!
google avatar

Yelp
You come here for the kids. And our kids loved it! They got the chocolate batter with sprinkles and had fun making and eating them. I thought they tasted good too! I also bought them each a hot chocolate as I had promised. One kid had a bite of his whip cream. The other ate the whip cream. Neither had the drink! $9 for whip cream was a lot ... my fault though! Candied bacon was ok. I'd skip it and get the Praline Bacon from Screen Door any day. I asked the server what the difference was between the loaded potatoes and the Slappy hash was. In a not so friendly tone she responded "the ingredients." When I asked "Are they both diced potatoes, both shredded potatoes ...?" She then explained the difference. Not the most stellar response I've heard from a server but back to the beginning of this review ... the kids enjoyed themselves!

Yelp
At first when I looked at the menu of this place I thought, wow this is going to be a pricey meal. I was surprised at the big portions we received. Not only did the one bottle or pancake batter last us around 6 pancakes worth, it was also a blast to make different designs. Toppings are very pricey so I would honestly skip them but the quality of the pancake batter is actually pretty great. Loved the ambiance of the place as well. Decor felt very diner-chic. Definitely a happening place so prepare for a bit of a wait but I'd probably come again.

Cindy L.

Yelp
This place is so unique and cute. The waiter was very patient and helpful. The batter was tasty and the process was easy. I recommend trying to come in during the week, if you can!
google avatar

Yelp
This place gets incredibly packed so be sure to plan ahead. The menu is easy to read and your batter gets to you pretty quick. The batter is so delicious and it's fun making different shapes and flavors. It's hard to go wrong when you are able to choose your own flavors and toppings. The candied bacon is also an absolute must try. This is a definite must try.

Yelp
Came here for a weekday breakfast with my husband and our toddler. Got there shortly after it opened. Server was nice and friendly. Our toddler loved putting sprinkles in the pancakes, and the staff were cool about the mess he made which was super nice. Pancake batter was very tasty; we had buttermilk and their seasonal which was cinnamon. We had about 6 left over pancakes from 2 bottles of batter. Fun way to have breakfast with littles! Had their seasonal cold brew with the espresso whipped cream. It was delicious and we will be back. FYI Street parking only

Yelp
OK, so where to start first of all when we walked in we had to wait for 15 minutes even though our whole party was there. The food was subpar and the pancakes could have been cooked better even though we had to cook them ourselves, which doesn't make sense if it's a sit down establishment. Come on our way we were pushed by the waitress there. I believe her name was something that I couldn't remember because we were pushed out so fast. My friend ended up having to tip $20. The ambience of this restaurant could not have been worse and I may have to leave this review even though I love to leave really good reviews overall I would recommend going back but maybe just setting your expectations low but it was pretty great as well.

Yelp
Casual breakfast spot with a fun twist! Super fun breakfast spot! The DIY pancakes are a fun addition to the breakfast experience. We went on a Tuesday morning around 10am and we were seated immediately. The service was great and they went over their menu with us and how the DIY pancakes work since it was our first time. We got the hot chocolate, buttermilk and chocolate DIY batters with some sides. We also got their bacon and sausages. The sausages were so good!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Came with a friend on Friday morning. It was already so packed with families but we were able to get a table. We got the buttermilk and the peanut butter batters. After starting conservatively, we later started channeling our artistic selves to create pancake art pieces. Lots and lots of fun! I also got a side of scrambled eggs and breakfast sausage, which ended up being more than enough food between the two of us. SO many pancakes were made. Highly recommend this place for families or even for a fun date. Loads of fun!

Terry P.

Yelp
Took my middle school students to the restaurant and had a great time. We had patient staff and help with setting up our group there. The students loved the food and enjoyed themselves and their field trip immensely. Thanks to them for helping and thanks for great food and atmosphere. TLP

Yelp
A lot of fun for the family. It's like IHOP with a built-in table griddle. You can make your own batter creations, using their bottles of batter. Two bottles supplied enough for our three kids.
google avatar

Yelp
We came for my husband's birthday to have some fun and we absolutely did! Daughter and I thought we would surprise him with create your own pancakes, but he chose to get a stack of the blueberry and lemon curd pancakes, which were delicious, totally drenched in curd and huge, but for the tiny plate they arrived on! Daughter and I got the create your own and had a blast! My absolute favorite was a combination of blueberries, banana, lavender honey and lemon curd swirled in the batter! Wow! One last but of creativity criticism is they could use bigger coffee cups, but the coffee was good, Heather, our server, was kind and helpful and brought hubby a big coffee to go and we really did have a fun morning! Kudos! This is a must visit with the kids or if you just feel like being a kid.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun place to have a social breakfast. Small griddle to make your pan cakes with fun ingredients or order from the kitchen. The chicken fried steak was two thumbs up.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Nice brunch spot in the city for breakfast classics and for pancakes - with a twist! You actually cook the pancakes yourself I'm a griddle in the middle of the table and can order any type of topping or filling for your pancake and there are a handful of different batters to choose from (including gluten free!) A fun place where adults can bring out their inner kid and kids can just be kids. Not like blow your socks off amazing but it is a unique concept with good food!
google avatar

Ailene J.

Yelp
Not only is Slappy Cakes fun, the food is delicious too. I love cooking the pancakes at the table. More than that, I love ordering art supplies like two colors of batter and different shapes and sizes of add-ins. Then, I live to see how everyone at the table uses their ingredients. The hollandaise is yummy and the potatoes are worthy. I like to order pancakes and a non-pancake dish. So far, I haven't been disappointed with any of their food. Their coffee is exceptional. The wait time for a table is usually long, so I like to reserve a table on Yelp in advance. It's loud with little kids and hipsters and that's my only complaint...maybe they could have a "no kids" hour sometime?
google avatar

Iris Karina R.

Yelp
Buttermilk batter was good service was good too we got there at 9 and as we were leaving at 10 it started to get really packed the entrance is super small. Small portions for the price not worth it.
google avatar

Taylor M.

Yelp
We come here pretty frequently so I can say without a doubt Heather is the BEST! She's takes care of her own tables, helps all the others with their tables, gets behind the bar to make drinks for all! Especially helpful when all others don't show up! Surprised she's not managing the place at this point. Love Slappy cakes, love Heather.
google avatar

Yelp
The intrigue with this place is the griddles built into the tables allowing customers to create their own pancakes. While the concept is alluring, you're basically paying to do here what you'd do at home for free. While you CAN make cool pancakes, doing so would require paying for different colored batters to even make something remotely interesting. The batters are different flavors, though, which is cool. Outside of custom made pancakes, the Grand Slap menu item is pretty good and the potatoes are amazing, the seasoning great. Everything else is your standard breakfast; nothing incredible but not terrible either. My girlfriend enjoyed the Huevos Rancheros and here temporary Hazelnut Iced Mocha. I had the Orange Kreamsicle which consists of Orange juice, Soda water, and vanilla, something that could basically be made at home... it was average. Overall, quality wise this place is pretty middle of the road for me and I probably wouldn't come back soon but it can be fun for a first time date or something.

Yelp
Every time we come to town we make sure to eat at Slappy Cakes. We went there today and are actually planning to go again Sunday. If you have Kids, there's no question, you have to go but my husband and i used to come here long before we had kids. They have a great cocktail menu! This place is so much fun. Such a cool experience. Bring one to Bend, OR! Have to give a shout out to Heather. Looks like she runs the place but also made us feel we were the only people there. She's kind and genuine and thoughtful. Constantly checking in on my kids and I without interrupting. She was personable and friendly when we had a chance to talk a little. If you go look out for her. Beautiful blonde with amazing skin! : )

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! So much fun for people of all ages!! Great service and great food! My husband and I were talking about how a place like this seems to have all the hype for how fun it is and you wouldn't expect them to have as good of food as they do! But their food is absolutely amazing! Only reason it's not getting 5 stars from me is because they aren't exactly set up for those of big groups which is totally fine with me. They have the seating for it but the tables they have for big groups still only has the one flat top to cook on in the middle so the people closest to it can cook but the ones on the end are kind of out of luck and at the mercy of those closest to it to cook their pancakes. But that aside I absolutely love this this place! My daughter was over the moon about it and my husband and I are always happy to go!

Yelp
Slappy Cakes is a lot of fun, especially if you have some kiddos to bring. I love arts and crafts so it was fun to mix that with breakfast. That said, I wasn't overly impressed with the food. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Definitely something to try at least once, but I won't be in a hurry to come back. Service could have been a little more attentive.
google avatar

Nayeli C.

Yelp
Awesome place for the kids to have a fun breakfast. We would return. The food is nothing spectacular and the wait is very long but, like I said, fun place for the kids.
google avatar

Erin H.

Yelp
Fun experience that my kids absolutely loved. I would say middle of the road pricing- we paid $44 for two batters, three additional toppings, two sides of bacon, and a latte. Our waitress was fantastic and prompt and my kids thought it was the best experience ever. My oldest wanted to drive back down the next weekend to visit!
google avatar

Mehreen K.

Yelp
We went here to celebrate our grandson's first birthday. He was amused and we loved sharing the experience with him. This spot has great food! We loved all the dishes.
google avatar

Leo G.

Yelp
Great 1960s themed decor and the food was delicious. This is a great place for a date, birthday, or brunch. Wait time was 15-20 minutes on a busy Saturday morning. The pancake options were numerous and the batter is delicious. I tried the eggs Benedict and it was very good. Egg was fluffy and hollandaise tasted authentic and home made. Will be coming back here.
google avatar

Devon S.

Yelp
Fun and fast service! Lots of options to choose from! Even a gluten free option. Will definitely be coming back again!
google avatar

Don V.

Yelp
The food off the menu is very good and the make your own pancakes are fun for kids. The ambiance is wide open and great for this type of family place. The service is also prompt and friendly.

Yelp
So I was really excited to try this place. I know, it sounds stupid to go to a restaurant to make your food, but it seemed like a cool concept that would be fun and delicious. I was really wrong. So I knew the place is usually busy with a wait, which is fine, but they have no place for people to feel comfortable waiting. The tables are definitely packed in there to the point of being awkward and uncomfortable. The place looks old and worn down with uncomfortable seating that looks like it belonged to a middle Eastern restaurant that was at this location before. I was surprised when the waitress didn't bother to ask if we'd been in before. Usually with places that aren't just standard (place order with staff) I'm asked this to make sure I know how things work. When we asked she said the batter is good for 3 pancakes and that was it. Now you'd expect this to be THE place for pancakes, but sadly they are terrible. Batter is cheap already so not sure why they thin it out so much. I knew immediately that it was not the consistency of a pancake, which made them doughy and like glue in your mouth. Really glad we just got one to share. They are about half the size of a stack of pancakes you get anywhere else too. The menu I had initially seen online did not reflect their actual offerings - up to date websites are a must! So basically the delicious pancake I wanted to make could not be done anymore and let's be honest, they don't have a lot of variety. The toppings don't even really go together, there is no cohesiveness to it. The prices are out of whack too. Pretty much you can spend like $14 for a small stack of 3 pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. Or you can go anywhere else and get more and better. I tried to make a savory pancake at least since the sweet items were an awful choice. Maybe would have been good if the batter had been good, but it simply wasn't. Not the best service either. Not awful, just not attentive or friendly. Will never return.
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
The pancakes and customer service were amazing ! A worker came up to me and explained everything on the menu it was great! The potatoes were so well cooked! I really loved how it just felt so calming in there even though it was packed!
google avatar

Julie H.

Yelp
The pancakes here are fantastic & the best of the best. This place is kid friendly...they have high chairs and boosters available for littles. We ordered some pancake batter & also a strawberry shortcake pancake made in the kitchen. It does take a short while to cook the pancakes at your table so I am glad to have ordered some from the kitchen. One thing that was a big memory maker was creating pancakes that looked like flowers, letters, etc. It was fun. I also thought the strawberry shortcake pancake stack was beyond amazing. Fresh strawberries, creamy whipped cream, and best tasting pancakes...totally worth every penny. This place is clean, service is great, and prices are the norm for PNW/Portland. Definitely would go back.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Great food and service and so much fun for kids. They have more than just pancakes too! I got the hash and it was perfect.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Cool concept but also kinda messy. It's also not has much fun with kids as anticipated....you have giant very hot plate in middle to table so it's an accident waiting to happen with younger fingers.

Mitch G.

Yelp
Fun place to take the kids. Pancakes were good for the little people and the Classic Breakfast did the job for the bigger ones. Pricing for breakfast was a bit high - but that is the case with all restaurants these days. However, I thought it was a bit rude to have a 3 % kitchen service charge added to the bill and then to see the tip percentages starting at 18%, with 20% and 25 % being the next "suggestions". I believe in tipping for good service but someone would need to bring golden pancakes to come close to justifying 28%!

Marsha H.

Yelp
Four of us went to Slappy Cakes on a recommendation from a good friend. He told us the chicken fried steak was the best around. Three of us ordered the chicken fried steak and we were all greatly disappointed. I will say the gravy was delicious, the potatoes cooked perfect as were my scrambled eggs. The chicken fried steak was chewy and not pounded out very well. The breading didn't even adhere to the steak. if you go order something else.

Loghan M.

Yelp
I grew up going here, and it used to be awesome. Super fun concept and really yummy food. The last few times I've gone I regret it every time. I do get the gf/vegan batter, but my boyfriend got the special red velvet and said it wasn't good either. The gf batter is really gummy and doesn't seem to cook well. Also ridiculous to me that 2 pieces of bacon is $4. Will not be going back
google avatar

Kenia C.

Yelp
Our server heather was fantastic, we ordered a side of the loaded potatoes and they were very tough. As if they had been sitting out for some time. My boyfriend got the chicken fried steak and that was so delicious. The pancake experience is fun, $10 for about 5 or 6 pancakes. Great service and cute place however the sides need some more attention.
google avatar

Gabby G.

Yelp
OMG can this place get any better. Love love all the pancake choices with the toppings to choose from. It is pricy heads up but if you're in the area check this place out.
google avatar

Melinda G.

Yelp
Came here for the experience. It is an interactive breakfast place. My granddaughter LOVES pancakes so I figured she would love to cook and create her own. The Ingredients all seemed fresh and delicious as far as the fruits go. She liked picking her own pancake batter, etc and then cooking her creation. They have regular breakfast items as well that you can order. I think next time I am going to try the Slappy Benedict's. I was basic today and just had pancakes. It seemed a bit pricey to me, but I think it is the way they break it all down. You do need to make reservations which I'm glad I had checked their website the day before or I would not have known that. Overall we enjoyed ourselves. This is a fun family food eatery and it was a unique experience.
google avatar

Jodi M.

Yelp
This spot is well reviewed and is worthy. The trick is the menu items are exquisite. Don't settle for just pancakes. Regular visitors come with kids and keep them entertained with pancake art while they enjoy mimosas and eggs Benedict. The menu items including cheesy potatoes and bacon and all your brunch favorites Are served up in delicious family friendly servings. So make a reservation and be prepared for fun and deliciousness.
google avatar

Karlyn W.

Yelp
Group friendly, diy tableside pancake griddle (batter and spatula provided). They offer pancakes already made to order and other breakfast menu options with substitutes for vegetarians.

Ashley E.

Yelp
full of kids but well worth the wait (about 20 minutes for two on a weekday) had a lot of fun with the experience though the waitress was a bit pushy with the tip & upselling toppings... the experience itself was really fun and unique! we were able to make fun pancake shapes and the seasonal batter (gingerbread) was super yum too!
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
Make a reservation on their website to make sure you have a seat. Or do what we did and show up right before opening and get a seat right as they open! If you order a side to put on your pancakes (bacon berries so on) you will only need one for the table. We made the mistake and ordered sides for each person and had a bit of extra food. It's a fun experience to get creative with you pancakes but there's also food you can order if you're not in the mood to play with your food.
google avatar

Jesse C.

Yelp
This place is great for families , especially if you have kiddos! It's an interactive breakfast experience that they'll love. I've been here many times pre-pandemic, and I recently came here for the first time since the pandemic. I brought my nephew and he loved being able to create his own pancakes. I like that they offer seasonal pancake batters to switch it up. They are currently serving the poppyseed batter, and it is delicious! Their other breakfast entrees are good as well. Right now, they are offering take-out and doing in-door dining by reservations only. They are spacing customers out by keeping every other table vacant. And they are definitely sanitizing between customers. I felt safe and clean dining in here.
google avatar

Jody J.

Yelp
I had been wanting to go here. Come on... Who doesn't like to play with their food lol! I had family coming to town and thought this would be a perfect place to take the Littles for brunch. They had never been to a place like this and so the kids were very excited. Slappy Cakes has it going on. There is always a line to get in the place and it isn't exactly cheap... But to see a child experience it for the first time is priceless! There are a lot of À la cart items on the menu and it can be confusing, but the people who work here are very experienced and great at suggesting or answering questions. There are plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. The gluten-free batter was actually delicious. So many different toppings and sauces to try. We went with some berries, bananas, chocolate chips etc. The breakfast burrito was super yummy as well as the potatoes. This is a must for everyone to experience at least once... It's a pretty cool place where everybody can be a kid. :-)

Joan G.

Yelp
Went here for the first time with my little sister today and the only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of the good food but the service was terrible. Our server neglected our table while she periodically checked in with the other tables with white customers. My little sister also realized this unfair treatment because unless we called her for something she didn't bother giving us her service compared to other tables and white customers. I spoke with the manager but racist issues like this rarely get resolved. I am a grown up and I am used to these situations but the fact that my little sister also felt uncomfortable and had this experience at a young age is why I have to leave the review.

Earnie G.

Yelp
We enjoyed this place. The biggest problem is you will likely have to wait to get in, but they do have an electronic waitlist to make that a little easier. It's an open, noisy, and a bit crowded space. But they try their best to make everyone feel welcome and cared for. They do a good job with that. Service was kind, helpful, and (mostly) attentive. We had pancakes and also a few of the other breakfast dishes. They were all good. Nothing was OMG outstanding, but the quality was good on all and nothing tasted bad. It's basic, well executed breakfast fare--with no real creativity beyond the make your own pancake device. The make your own pancakes can be a ton of fun for all ages. We had everywhere from 2 to 14 to 24 to 50s to 60s. All enjoyed it. Let loose a little and give in to the fun. Order several toppings. Be creative. The pancake batter produces gorgeous, light, and fluffy cakes. Many breakfast places could learn from this batter. They have some regular flavors, as well as a seasonal special batter. Get several bottles, and get different varieties. We will return when back in Portland just because it's so dang much fun and the pancakes are good.
