My ribeye was just okay, but my wife’s filet was disappointing. It was barely ½ inch thick and maybe 4–5 inches in diameter, where have you ever seen a $50+ filet that thin? It looked like it had been pounded flat to tenderize it, or cutting in half & pounding it out to save money. No pictures online looked like what we were served, and why are you a steakhouse but don't show any steak dishes on your menu, or online. Our server was terrific, no complaints there. But when we asked to speak with the manager, she returned with the bill and said the meals had been comped. The manager never even came to our table. That’s poor leadership in a restaurant setting. I’m not looking for a generic “please call us” response, I’d rather see real action. Take a hard look at your menu, your kitchen practices, and especially your management. Guests shouldn’t have to be comped just to be heard.

The food and service were wonderful! Our booth was well located so it helped with the date night experience. Carter was an unbelievably server. He was so willing to share insights into the food and recommend exceptional dishes. It was truly a wonderful evening.

Google
Well, if you want to pay $50+ for a filet that’s barely half an inch thick and smaller than a hamburger, sitting on mashed potatoes and veggies with some cheap-tasting gravy, this is your place! We complained, and while our waitress was great and took the food off the bill, the meal itself was terrible. The manager didn’t even bother to come to our table. Overall, a horrible experience.

Google
We came in last night during the very busy Cherry Fest and it was packed! There were only two servers, and we had Foster who did an amazing job! He was super polite, friendly and helpful, he was apologetic for the wait on our food and drinks, never complained about how hard he was working (you could totally see the pressure and stress) and the food was so good! We loved the options of both menus, and the Lychee martini was divine! The tenderloin salad was as well, and it was prepared perfectly! We will definitely be back!!!

Google
If you’re looking for a good steak (should be at good at 54 dollars) do not come here. It’s a Walmart cut of meat and it’s not good at all. The Italian dish my wife had, chicken Alfredo was okay. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Google
We were in Traverse City for our honeymoon and came to Slate for our “fancy” dinner night. The food was amazing and the service was great. The only downside is that some of the seating is too close to other people. We were right next to a family (our tables were 12 inches from eachother) that had two kids, and let’s just say one of the kids was not happy the entire time. It would’ve been a better atmosphere and more peaceful if we had more privacy. Wish we got a booth for our special night.

This is my second time ever coming here but I must say it's very eloquent and has a sophistication to it that I highly enjoy. Dignified in nature and is a hidden gem, as there isn't much publicity on this place. So that is another thing I enjoy. The waiters and waitresses are great as well. Also best of luck to my fellow farmer trying to get his way into the medical field.

Google
I’ve been to sorrelinas before and had a wonderful experience. We thought we would try slate seeing as it’s the same restaurant and it was horrible. The waiter was the bartender who spent zero time dealing with our 8 top table and that’s nothing compared to the ridiculous table next to us who were so loud and obnoxious we couldnt even talk to the person next to us. My head hurt and I could t get out of there fast enough. There are so many good places to eat in traverse city that I would choose somewhere else with better service and atmosphere. STAY AWAY!!!!

Yelp
Had a great meal the other night for early dinner. Salmon done to perfection on veggies and fried rice. Yum. Tenderloin also done to perfection and super tender. Good appetizers! Great service!! We will absolutely be back!

Yelp
I've been debating how to write this for a while. The quality of service, interior, and food is not acceptable for these prices. To start, we were seated in a booth that was separated from the wall and broken. Then the drinks came out and my lychee martini had a wooden pick that goes in a sandwich. The martini itself was okay. Then the fries appetizer came. The special ketchup they brought out tasted like sweet baby rays bbq sauce. We also got the pork belly wontons and they were really awkward to eat and not very good. For the main, I got the salmon and it was incredibly disappointing. There was no crispy sear on the salmon and the rice was way too salty and mushy. Everything tasted like a cheap microwave meal. Also the service started out okay, but towards the end of the night our server basically disappeared. I don't know if they have them working both sides, but he kept saying they "got slammed" while our side of the restaurant emptied out... Also he took at least 20 minutes to bring the bill after we asked for it and when he brought it, it was wrong so we had to wait even longer.

Yelp
Sorry not sorry I didn't even make it home before I had to pull over. the food was mid for cost just upset im getting sick.

Yelp
Think Disney dining without the characters. Huge dining room. Good services. Meh food. Started with a Manhattan. Tasted a little too much like cough syrup. Remember to call your bourbon, otherwise you get well. Ordered a bottle of Quilt cab. Glasses were handed to us "fresh from the dishwasher" still hot and wet. Sure, it wasn't Caymus, but dry, room temp glasses would be nice. Caesar salad was nothing to get excited about. Chopped head of romaine, brown and wilty at the edges, bottled dressing, sprinkle of parm. No cracked pepper. No hint of anchovy. I got the veal parm. An oh so not tender hunk of breaded meat over boxed noodles and sauce. Wife got the tenderloin over risotto. Flavorless meat and gluey risotto. Recommend eating off Front street, or at the least stick to its far ends when dining in TC. Head to the old mental hospital. It has great dining. Sadly could t get a table there. Oddly Slate had plenty of reservations for a Friday night on the Thursday before. Now I know why.

Yelp
Slate is essentially a piano bar physically connected to Sorellina. Nice selection of $13-$15 cocktails and you can order food from Sorellina. Attentive waitstaff and the drinks were on point. Casual vibe but can dress up in the evening.

Yelp
My personal experience at Slate was bad, but it was no reflection on the restaurant , the concept (adjoining restaurants), the staff , the milieu, the website, or the ambiance. All were great, but an illusion and ultimately a distraction.....if you are a discerning diner. It's on me that I was expecting a finer dining experience. All the signs were there and I ignored them. The price of the entrees (low), the descriptions in the menu, the menu itself (swordfish?), the lack of recent reviews. It was not what I would call a fine(r) dining meal, certainly not on par with Amical , where you get a nice sized well prepared entree with creative sides with your meal. The aforementioned swordfish just came on top of rice with a salsa on top. I have not been to a Chilis or Appleby's - if they still exist - in years, but this is reminiscent of a meal you would be served there. And I would have enjoyed the meals we got at Slate , had they been served to me at those restaurants.

Yelp
We had a good experience at Slate for Restaurant Week. Their Calamari was a little disappointing, but in no way was it horrible; just a little too rubbery for my liking. Their wagyu tenderloin was perfect, and their Thai peanut noodle dish was good, too. The staff was amiable and prompt. If you're looking for a cozy, casual restaurant, I recommend Slate.

Dwight G.

Yelp
What a SURPRISE this restaurant is...tasty food, attentive service, and a piano player to boot. A very nice upscale restaurant attached to the Sorellina restaurant sharing a kitchen. Parking is scare. It is a must stop while in Traverse City, best place yet.

Barb V.

Yelp
Slate has reopened with a different concept. no longer billed as a steak house (although there is steak on the menu) It now offers small plates and some larger entrees. And it is delicious! Liked it so much went back again. The short ribs, crab cakes, roasted pistachios., garlic hummus, to name a few of the things we tried were great. Did not disappoint. Good service too.

Yelp
The best dining restaurant in Traverse City. The wait staff is polite and quick to service. The wine list is extensive with options for everyone. The perfect place for an anniversary. Each dish was full of taste and flavor.
google avatar

Stacia G.

Yelp
This is a treat! Treat yourself to amazing food and well recommended wine and service. This is the fancy white tablecloth menu you should go to! I had the surf and turf with a unique twist on the sauce for the turf. All very delicious! Go!

Yelp
The quality and quantity was not in line with what the prices are. We had an appetizer, 2 entrees, and 4 drinks and it was around $175. Still was hungry after we left. Husband had the prime ribeye which was bland and much smaller than expected. Salmon/rice was nothing special, could've made it better at home. This place really needs to step up their game if they wish to win over the TC clientele. We will NOT be going there again, ever.

Yelp
This was a first visit for everyone in our group and we had mixed experiences on our dinner. This is a steakhouse with some seafood selections of which I ordered the scallops and they were delicious. Cooked just right and just the right portion. Three others ordered various cuts of steak and each of them was not cooked to the temperature they requested. One of our guests was very specific, black and blue, and explained in detail how he wanted it, and it still came out over cooked. Service was fine, great wines and bar service was prompt. The restaurant was very clean. It's somewhat narrow and deep so tables in the back are much darker in light than if you sit up front where you get daylight and a view of the hustle and bustle of shoppers in downtown Traverse City. There's many restaurants to choose from in the immediate area, but I would give them another go.

Yelp
My girl and I came here late-ish on a Sunday about 90mins before close. There was one server and about 4 tables and 3-4 people at the bar. We got served water and menus pretty quickly. He explained that he was the only one working so we put in our app, dinner and drink orders right away. Bread and app came out pretty quickly, they were out of the ceviche but we got calamari that was pretty great. My old fashioned was pretty good, as was my girls mixed menu drink. steaks came out after a short wait, Kansas City Strip with black n blue crust & filet were pretty damn amazing. Seasoned and cooked literally perfect, we shared one side of the red potatoes that were good but we wanted the mashed but didn't know what pomme was haha. For being one server, our experience was great. I wouldn't deduct a star for only having one server but they should've at the very least have a bartender. Food and drinks were well worth the price tag. Super happy to have a nice steak house here in TC, will 100% be coming back frequently.

Yelp
AMAZING dinner at Slate, traverse City's new steak house. Started out with the grilled octopus with potatoes and bacon jam - - WOW!!! That could have been a meal right there!! Then I had the sea scallops with roasted watermelon and polenta, Dennis had the bone in fillet which he said was the best he had ever had. Mine was delicious and absolutely the best flavor combination. Our server Andy was amazing and so personable. Pricey but well worth it for a special night out. We will be back!!

James F.

Yelp
I read all the reviews and it seemed like good place to eat.The waitress was flaky, we asked for the football game to be put on the tv and she replied after I'm done watching golf. Then we ordered appetizers, the crab cakes were awful. Next was Caesar salad, pretty good. Main course was a scallop dish, nothing to make me want to come back, but ok. Overall I would not recommend eating here.

Yelp
Wonderful meal ! Everything we ordered was Delicious! My son had the surf and turf and his lobster was moist - best lobster I had tasted in a long time. Service was excellent as well Atmosphere was nice however it seems to be loud Acoustics hopefully will be modified to take care of that situation. - that's my only negative comment We had a party of 3 and had a marvelous dinner

Yelp
I didn't want to write this review, but if it helps other restaurant goers... First, the price point is $$$$ which I think other reviews were misleading, entrees are $40-$55 and that's without sides for steaks. We ordered drinks and our server went over the menu, however when he got to telling us about the specials he said "it's quail, it's like a whole thing, so do you want me to go over it with you?" Not the most welcoming effort... We decided to start with an appetizer to see if it was worth staying with such a pricy menu and not a lot of effort on our servers part. The crab cakes were more than lacking. There were 4, the size of large tater-tots and no lumps of crab, all breading. Our server asked how they were and when we told him he seemed to think the lack of crab was our opinion...? After this experience we decided to go elsewhere for dinner. He did half-ask if we wanted the crab cakes taken off the bill, we declined. Any welcoming effort or enthusiasm on the servers part may have convinced us to stay, and better food... 2 stars for location and ambiance. TL;DR - pretentious and lackluster, spend your money elsewhere.

Yelp
We were looking for a spot to have dinner and decided to wander into Slate. So glad we did. Service was excellent. Qe had a couple glasses of wine, the chopped salad, the French onion soup, the red skin potatoes, and 3 7 oz fillets. The 3 of us walked away stuffed and couldn't stop talking about how fabulous everything was!!!
google avatar

Aaron O.

Yelp
We had really good service but the food was just ok especially for the prices $$$$ Sometimes it's just the night but we all weren't super impressed with our meals. Our steaks were lukewarm!
google avatar

Bethany P.

Yelp
Sad to leave a review that reflects poorly on this place because it has the potential to be one of the best in Traverse City. Maybe we went on a bad night. The scallops were very good I will say. The rest of the meal lacked in flavor and creativity. The service was just ok. I never mind waiting for meals because that's what we are there for. I've never seen my group of friends use so much salt and pepper on steaks no less! The presentation was beautiful but the flavor was definitley missing. To pay that price tag on a meal I would expect to be left wanting more.
google avatar

Polly B.

Yelp
Service was great! Seemed to be traditional steak house. Some unusual sides like the mushroom creme brûlée.
google avatar

Barbara W.

Yelp
Holy cow! This seafood and steakhouse was something very special. I started with a delicious chop salad which managed to be a unique approach to a steakhouse favorite. Entree was the surf and turf special. Best lobster tail I have ever had. Amazing vanilla hollandaise sauce. I can't even explain what a party it created in my mouth. The tenderloin was delicious with a coffee spice rub. The redskin potatoes were also exceptionally good. The dessert menu was a bit pedestrian but who had room. The bread was fine and made delicious by the Fustini's tabletop balsamic vinegar and oil.

Tan K.

Yelp
Slate drew us to the restaurant with its interesting selection on their menu. The service was good, presentation of the food was exceptional. The ribeye was good but not exceptional. However, we were disappointed with the halibut being overlooked. The presentation of the food was very nice including the side dishes. It did not meet our expectation for the price point.
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
I have been twice, since they opened. Both times were awesome! I highly recommend the scallops. And ask for Ed! He's the best.
google avatar

Craig W.

Yelp
We have had many meals at Slate. Each one we tried something different to sample everything. For a new restaurant, they improve each time we are there. Steaks are excellent, scallops are incredible and the halibut was perfectly cooked. Side portions are just right and the mashed potatoes are awesome. Service is personal and friendly. Don't be in a hurry, enjoy the atmosphere and make it an experience. Pricing is fair for the excellent food.
google avatar

Elisha K.

Yelp
This was one of the best meals I've ever had! Expensive but worth every penny. I had the surf n turf which comes with tenderloin steak and a lobster tail with an amazing vanilla hollandaise sauce. The steak practically melts in your mouth. Our waiter Ed was fantastic. I wish we had this restaurant in Cali! I highly recommend!!

Lori F.

Yelp
The food is great, decorum can be casual or as fancy as you want to make it. The wait staff is fabulous! I've never had a disappointing time or meal here.
google avatar

Peggy O.

Yelp
We had the worst dining experience...party of 4 ordered 2 20 oz. Steaks dinners, scallops and there famous mac and cheese it took an hour for our order to come messed up our order 20 oz steak was not 20oz very small for 50.00, brought a different steak mac and cheese cold scallops cold...so we got up and left did nothing for us no apology.....will not return!!!

Stacy S.

Yelp
Very good food. Over priced. Be prepared for very loud and noisy dining experience as there is a lot of cement and no acoustic tiles to dampen clanging of conversation and dishes. Don't feel the need to repeat the experience. Yelp is asking me to post a photo to assure that I am a real person. Yes - I am a real person but do not feel the need to post a photo.

Yelp
So excited that TC finally has a steak house. I made reservation's ahead of time for my wife and I on our anniversary, there was a little mix up and accidentally booked on the same day of a private event in Slate so they put me in Sorelinas instead but allowed me to order off the slate menu. This was no problem as the service and atmosphere are fantastic in sorelina's. The manager even came over and apologized for the mix up and was extremely friendly and welcoming. We ordered ceviche and both had a steak, keep in mind I'm a Texan native and would like to think I know a thing or two about steak. The cut of meat was fantastic and it was cooked perfectly rare, I was very happy as I have missed eating at a nice steak restaurant. This place is a fantastic addition to TC and I'm excited to eat here again in the future!

Susan J.

Yelp
Our hotel recommended we try this newer establishment when we requested a "great steak," and based their suggestion on the sister location and owner's considerable reputation. Scallops were so so, and the steak - ordered charred out / medium rare in (not quite Pittsburgh style) arrived looking anemic and flavorless. Also, not even a touch of brown on the exterior! Could have ordered at a format steak restaurant. Need to work out the kitchen and service kinks. Hoping for a memorable meal and leaving very disappointed.

Bill H.

Yelp
Went to Slate last Friday night for dinner at 6 p.m. Greeted by Hostess in sneakers and yoga pants but pleasant. Server had the whole restaurant including the bar so service was slow but he was good. Food was good but not up to prices. My main concern is they try to call themselves a Chop House and real ones like The Capital Grille have staff. Slate does not. Our dishes sat on the table when we finished a course. Getting food served was way too long. When you're paying $200 for dinner I think you can expect a more polished presentation. This could be a great venue. Whoever owns this should know better. Too bad.

S B.

Yelp
Sooo much in love with Traverse City!!! This place could benefit from a bit better signage. Go to the address, in the door and turn right. Small sign outside is all you'll get!! Beautiful decor, great service, great drinks. We had the chowder, filet, surf & turf. All wonderfully prepared and presented. Do NOT get the octopus appetizer. It looked like it was snagged out of the tank and a couple of tentacles were hacked off. My husband took a bite and spit it out. Our server removed it from the tab (& hopefully it will be off the menu). Minus that experience, we had a lovely meal

Samantha T.

Yelp
Very good! Everything ala cart. Steak very good. Melt in your mouth. Order 2 different sides and share. I would go back and refer a friend. :)

Dave C.

Yelp
I typically don't try new spots out for at least six months so this was the First time tonight. Before you get all concerned with the price point realize these are Prime steaks. I had the ribeye and it was well marbled, seasoned perfectly and spot on medium rare. It was melt in your mouth with amazing flavor, as you would expect for Prime. All sides were very good. Andy behind the bar and Ed serving means absolutely no service issues even for the discerning dinner. Seems strange they don't advertise but word of mouth will start filling the place....

Chris G.

Yelp
My wife and I chose Slate for her birthday dinner based on a recommendation from a friend. Our server was Frank and he was extremely attentive, knew the menu well and took phenomenal care of us. My wife got the 7 oz medium rare, and said it was the best steak she had ever tasted. The red skin potatoes were scrumptious as well. When you put above average prices for a meal you have above average expectations, and Slate (and Frank) well exceeeded those. If you're looking for a great experience, this is it.

T W.

Yelp
Here for our second time. Service is great and food excellent. We had the scallops and they were delicious, served on a bed of grilled watermelon which was innovative and tasty! Very cool decor; just what Traverse City needs!!

Andy W.

Yelp
My filet was top notch, best I've had up north. For a new place we were really impressed with the food.

Katie M.

Yelp
We came on a Thursday at 7pm. Sorellina's was packed. Slate was empty. We had the seafood chowder soup that was awesome. Had the watermelon salad that wasn't very good. My husbands steak was perfect but the steak I ordered with the surf and turf was way over cooked. The wait staff was knowledgeable and good.

Dean R.

Yelp
Awesome in every way. Loved my ribeye but had a hard time choosing from the different steaks on the menu. Lobster tail was great. Potato risotto was to die for. I'll be back for sure.

Ben A.

Yelp
NOISYAtmosphere, can't talk to more than 1 person, have to have wait staff right by their ear to hear your order, slow service COLD FOOD

Bart H.

Yelp
Well, its supposed to be a chop house so the steak is grade A USDA Choice Black Angus. And the steak was delicious. The app we chose was deconstructed Beef Wellington, very delicious. But our bill before tip was $136. This included the Beef Wellington, Surf and Turf, Diver Scallops, one side of Brussel Sprouts, a glass of wine and the TC Smoke. I was warned by the waiter that the hollandaise on the steak would be really sweet and was supposed to balance out the espresso rub - its my opinion the hollandaise was too sweet, in fact, tasted almost like nothing but sugar. Im no pro but I dont think hollandaise is supposed to be that sweet. Having said that, the steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The real gripe I have is that this whole meal took 2 hours. I wasnt in a hurry but sitting anywhere for 2 hours mostly waiting gets obnoxious. Food was good, service was meh, but overall I dont think the price tag really reflected what I felt I shouldve gotten.
