"A new Ukrainian-owned bar and restaurant with borscht cocktails and bacon, egg, and cheese pierogi opens today. Slava takes over the former home of Pegu Club." - Emma Orlow

A Running List of New Restaurants That Opened in New York City, November 2022 - Eater NY

"Slava, a new Ukrainian restaurant, and bar, appears to be opening tomorrow, Thursday, November 3, at 77 West Houston Street, near West Broadway, according to its Instagram. The new Eastern European spot apparently comes from the team behind Pineapple Club, a tropical cocktail bar that opened in the East Village during the pandemic. While the bar itself was not a particularly splashy one in New York City, Slava may certainly put the team on the map: The new venture is taking over the former acclaimed Pegu Club space, which shuttered in 2020 after 15 years in operation. According to the website, the second-floor establishment resides “next to and above” Dos Caminos, perhaps carrying on Pegu Club’s speakeasy feeling. An online menu lists imaginative dishes like BEC pierogi, potato pancakes with creamed mushroom and braised beef tongue, steamed trout with pumpkin cream, and chicken Kyiv with parsnip puree. For desserts, find sour cream panna cotta with cherry syrup and sunflower brittle, as well as a hazelnut crunch cake with toasted caraway seeds. For drinks, needless to say, vodka flows plenty. But it appears in unlikely forms: in a borscht-style cocktail with heavy cream and beets, in a cardamom espresso martini, and in an Aperol drink with sour cherry and lemon. Beverage director Nazar Hrab (who also designed Pineapple Club’s drinks and has worked at several Jean-Georges restaurants) and executive chef, Alex Scherbyna were both born in Ukraine, according to the Slava website. It’s a meaningful time to open a Ukrainian restaurant in New York City. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, restaurants like Veselka have become a rallying point to show solidarity for Ukraine. Meanwhile, bars have been dumping Russian vodka and swapping out bottles for Ukrainian-owned ones. At the same time, Russian restaurants in New York City have faced backlash, vandalism, and loss of business, despite standing in support of Ukraine. Slava joins the ranks of other Eastern European restaurants that have opened over the course of the past year, taking a modern look at the cuisine from a decidedly New York vantage point, in company with Edith’s Eatery and Grocery in Williamsburg, as well as Agi’s Counter, in Crown Heights — though seemingly more lavishly geared towards Manhattan primetime dining, than its colleagues in Brooklyn. It appears the restaurant will also have room for hosting events for the holiday season in its 127-person dining room, according to its website. Reservations are now live on Resy." - Emma Orlow

Google
We had our brunch in Slava today . Food was mouthwatering , tasty and presentation was great . We get almost every item in the menu . All the pastas are homemade, cooked to perfection. Whole entire experience teleporting you to that summer days in your grandma’s village . Cocktails are solid , infused vodkas it’s such a “Ukrainian Way” of welcoming your guests ! Service was warm and attentive. Our server Natalia was on point and professional, bartender was friendly and gave us some back story of the place . Thanks for bringing taste and hospitality of Ukraine to NYC. Definitely recommend and definitely coming back for dinner and night lounging :-)

Google
This place was an unexpected delight. Food was really good, atmosphere was warm and cozy. They make their own infused vodka and offer vodka flights for tasting. They will also sell you a bottle if you want. I recommend the Horseradish Honey vodka...you're welcome. This isn't a cheap place, but a good one. Definitely recommend.

Google
Amazing authentic place of modern Ukrainian cuisine! Very delicious food, potato deruny and duck was very good, nice cocktails, great service, very friendly stuff and administrator, cool atmosphere! Highly recommend to visit!

Google
Beautiful place, strong and delicious cocktails and foods are not only beautiful, but very very delicious. In love with the bar view, you can enjoy the view of bartenders making magic all night long. The beautiful portrait painted by the bar wall is breath taking. I highly recommend this place. Give it a try, you won’t regret it

Google
The food is an interesting take on Ukrainian fusion--that's the best way I can describe it. It was enjoyable, but none of it was really authentic. The space is great though and the staff were terrific. Good date night spot. If you opt for a flight of infused vodkas, I recommend the honey horsehadish. The cocktails themselves were a little on the sweet side.

Google
Fun, tasty soho neighborhood spot. Hits the spot for modern Ukrainian. Cocktails are decent too. Make sure you have the horseradish vodka. Chicken Kyiv was great. The dumplings really yummy. Be prepared for the nightclub music playlist

Google
A wonderful modern Ukrainian eatery in Soho. We need more Ukrainian eateries!!! Menu is varied, interesting. The dressings and accompaniments are imaginative and a pleasure to the taste buds. A modern take on traditional Ukrainian cuisine. The cocktails are very impressive (I had 2 Borscht cocktails - yummy!) as are the vodka infusions, especially the horseradish. Do yourself a favour and give this wonderful restaurant a try!

Google
Loved this place!! Slava feels authentically Ukrainian with a modern twist to it, and the decor really tops it all off! The cozy and elegant atmosphere is complete with a modern Ukrainian menu and vodka-based cocktails; I especially liked their signature Borscht cocktail! Definitely a new place to check out.

Yelp
Came here for restaurant week with my friend - we were super excited since we've been trying to go to all the Ukrainian spots in NYC but left with mixed feelings. We came here for dinner and ordered the: - Borscht - Ukrainian ceviche - Potato varenikiy - Fried chicken Kyiv sandwich - Cherry varenikiy - Watermelon frose Overall, the food was underwhelming and quite disappointing at times. Standouts were the ceviche and the cherry varenikiy - other than that, the rest were just...okay. The fried chicken sandwich, however, was just not good. Couldn't put my finger on it but there was a taste that was just really off putting and made it difficult to eat more than 2 bites of the sandwich. Service was also really slow and not very attentive, despite the restaurant being less than half full. It took almost 30 mins after we finished our starters for the entree to come out. We had really high hopes for Slava, considering their write up in Time Out - it has great potential but the follow through fell a bit short.

Yelp
The food was divine and the ambiance was so relaxing. I loved the borscht and couldn't get enough of the sourdough bread or the potato pancake with caviar. Service was polite and attentive. It's a great space for a large group.

Yelp
I found Slava a bit underwhelming in terms of food. Service at the start was really slow on a busy Thursday night too, as it took 10 minutes for our waiter to come by and give a menu (which was just a qr code). Drinks were fine, and that was probably the better part of the dinner. We ordered the potato pancakes, chicken kyiv, parker house rolls, vegan cabbage roll, BEC varenyky, and pickle plate. The food came way too fast, which only made me suspicious it was all premade. For the price, portion size was also crazy small. These are more bar bites than I'd call full size meals, even though the price may make you think otherwise. The drinks weren't bad. I tried the Can A Man Lviv and the Borscht. I recommend the Borscht. They also have vodka infusion shots. We tried ordering the flight of three, but they were sold out of two flavors, so garlic shots were all that was left to try. I liked the garlic, and I'd recommend that as well. As for food, I don't think I'd come back for any of it. None of the food was really exciting or worth the price. The pickle plate might have been the best thing. All in all, a pretty average experience for me at Slava. Not actively bad nor amazing, but the ambiance isn't terrible if you enjoy a more lively crowd in dimly lit setting. The space hasn't changed much from what it was when it was Pegu Club.

Yelp
New restaurant that just opened celebrating Ukrainian food and by extension culture. My family is Ukrainian and I went here with my parents for an early Mother's day dinner. My mom loved the cocktails - particularly the mint cucumber martini (hold the jalapeno). They're able to make anything you want - my dad really enjoyed their whiskey sours - but I do wish their menu had more whiskey focused offerings. The decor is chic and it's more of a cocktail lounge than a restaurant but that doesn't mean the food isn't good. I really enjoyed the pancakes stuffed with chicken and porcini which were nice and light while still having a rich savoriness to them. The lamb tenderloin was particularly excellent - a grown up version of the shashlyk found out a lot of other eastern European joints. They're still fine tuning the menu so don't be surprised if it's changed by the time you get there (the borscht martini seems to be a recent casualty) but it's clear the chef is playing with the concept and having fun. The dishes aren't your typical Ukrainian fair but rather an attempt to elevate the cuisine and showcase the elements of Ukrainian food with bogging it down with sentimentality or historical precedent. Maybe they should bring the original Salad Olivier. Overall it's a fun spot and I'm sure I'll be back. I think anyone would have a great time popping in for a cocktail or two and getting some small plates to share. Service was very attentive and staff was very pleasant.

Yelp
Went for their NYE party. I thought they had very reasonable pricing. 20$ to enter/reserve but that goes toward a cocktail. All their cocktails are 16-17 so with tax you're at 20 anyway. Some of their cocktails were hits - The pornstar martini - I would describe it as a classy, doesn't need to impress anyone, drink. It's very subtle on its flavors but does the job. I got two of those so that's how much I liked The espresso martini - refreshing, has a kick, and is definitely putting itself out there to woo you! Their version of old fashioned - had some chestnut purée or something that overpowered the entire drink. It wasn't a balanced cocktail. We did not try the food so don't know how to judge the mixed reviews. Service was pretty great I'll say! Although their party thing on Resy did say there would be passed canapés but we didn't see any. And I wish the dj did a tad more of a deal about midnight on New Years! (This is where pegu club used to be fyi) Unfortunately I only took videos so no photos to share

Yelp
Had an early dinner here over a holiday weekend, so predictably the restaurant was on the emptier side. It's a large space with tons of seating and a really nice ambiance - a more modern take on a traditional Slavic interior. Our waiter was excellent, he thoroughly explained the menu and gave recommendations. We started with the infused vodkas - apricot was our favorite, strawberry was sweet, and pear was also good We also really liked their cocktails- I had the Clarified Pornstar Martini I was disappointed when I tried their Ukrainian food, but I see they now have a new chef and a new menu, so I'm excited to go back.

Yelp
This place is not for everyone. Heads-up: 1. It is lively, but very noisy. Good to party, not good for conversation. 2. Food is heavy. Can be tasty, but not on the delicate side. In a city with such a strong Ukrainian community, with a past of exceptionally popular Ukrainian restaurants (sadly, now most of them closed), and with the world shocked by the atrocities of the war in Ukraine, it is a unique event that a new Ukrainian restaurant opens on Houston. Ukrainian food has its hits, and can be really tasty; but for me it is not the most refined. It is mostly heavy and based on overcooked not great ingredients. However, it can be enjoyable. The carpaccio with caviar is actually very good. And so is the pickle-salad. I'd advise not to miss these two. The ribs wrapped in cabbage are good. The vareniki with cream and bacon are great. The space (such a long and narrow room), is actually quite original, though the decoration is almost invisible. The atmosphere is weird. It is mostly groups of women in their 20s. Why, I don't really know. But it is not a problem in any way. One heads-up: this place is quite noisy. Not good if your gears are sensitive or you are looking for a quite place to talk.

Yelp
My friends and I came to Slava for cocktails and had a great time. We each got something different and all really enjoyed everything. I also really appreciate that there's a special cocktail whose proceeds get donated to support UNICEF's work in Ukraine (Slava Ukraini!) The atmosphere is dark and cozy so could be a good date spot as well ;)

Zehra M.

Yelp
Great space for a night out with friends or big groups. Lively ambience and food was tastefully made. It was more of a trendy restaurant with cocktail bar vibes / small bites though versus a place where you want to get stuffed. However - the chicken kyiev was memorable. Loved their cardamom espresso martini and the cherry pierogies as well.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately my girlfriend and I were kind of disappointed and mainly because of food as we wanted to try all "traditional" Ukrainian dishes. Firstly: Being from Ukraine there are not many Ukrainian restaurants in nyc, we were excited to check out this new spot. Many options on the menu are not Ukrainian such as: oysters, bone marrow, desserts.. which is okay but you should market yourselves as a Ukrainian fusion at this point, not Ukrainian restaurant. Secondly: portions were very small for the price. We paid 400 dollars and left still being hungry. My girlfriend loves vareniki and it came out with 4 very small pieces that were hard and stale, and tasted like they were just refrigerated and reheated therefore the dough texture was hard and chewy. Other Ukrainian dishes such as holubtsy olivie chicken Kiev was made not traditional way. Chicken was dry and super small and had almost no butter on inside. Cabbage was made non traditionally too just as a piece of short rib with tomato sauce and a bit of lettuce (not rolled entirely). The only one thing felt like Ukraine is a painting at the bar. Our server was very sweet and she was new and didn't know much about the menu or cuisine, not her fault. Also I didn't see any of the staff who spoke Russian or Ukrainian, everybody seemed to be American. So to conclude: we were excited as place looks nice and has creative decor and nice furniture but if you're looking for an authentic Ukrainian restaurant this is definitely not it.

Kaitlyn D.

Yelp
Came here for date night during restaurant week, and everything was perfect. Our server was very helpful and offered great suggestions. The drinks were very tasty and picturesque. The infused shots were interesting and worth the try (you HAVE to try the horseradish honey shot). All of the food was phenomenal. Don't sleep on the desserts! The cherry tart is a MUST!

Gabe C.

Yelp
Phenomenal food and service! Also very nice ambiance. We had the infused vodka shots that literally don't taste like alcohol. The ceviche, duck, and chicken sandwich all so good. But the star of the show was the desserts! The berry dumplings and berry tart were some of the best desserts I've had!

Rob J.

Yelp
Slava is truly one of the best hidden gems in NYC!! Slava has one of the best happy hour cocktail menus and some of the best Ukrainian food in the city. I'll always bring friends here because of their laid back atmosphere. Come to Slava you'll never regret it!! The Khersontini is the best

Dawn K.

Yelp
Very mixed review. Service wasn't great. The person pouring water and clearing plates was on top of it but I never saw my server. All good was tasty but had a questionable element. Lazy varenyky taste great but the mushrooms were hard rubber and inedible. Broccolini entree was just a big side dish and absolutely on the wrong section of the menu. The lazy varenyky should have been my main. Dessert was tasty but strange if you're not used to sour crème as a dessert. Do not order the froze! Overly frozen fake fruit water taste.

Rachel T.

Yelp
Great ambience, helpful and friendly staff, delicious cocktails and shareable dishes. Highly recommend this spot for a birthday, a catch-up with friends or a romantic evening.

Chelsea L.

Yelp
I never write reviews but we got all this for $45 per person because of the restaurant week menu. such a steal! Everything was delicious! Love a chewy doughy dumpling. I recommend duck leg, lazy varenyky, and cherry varenyky!

David L.

Yelp
I was very excited to go to Slava after hearing the team from the Pineapple Club were opening up a Ukrainian cocktail bar in Soho. Same great service, delicious unique drinks (like the borscht signature cocktail on the right), and great food.

Marsha K.

Yelp
Lovely bar with sleek decor, I've gone twice now and have loved it. The drinks are delicious and creative. Definitely try the borscht cocktail. The staff were very warm and attentive. Their new menu puts a twist on classic Ukrainian dishes which I was very excited to see in the city. Ambiance is great for small groups or a date.

Yulia S.

Yelp
Great great great. Authentic Ukrainian restaurant. Best in Ukrainian food in NYC. Service is great and the design and atmosphere

Jamie O.

Yelp
Had dinner here tonight and I'm already planning my return. Excellent energy, attentive staff and INCREDIBLE FOOD. The steamed trout really stood out to me as a healthier option on the menu. I was blown away by the flavor for something so light and fresh. Highly recommend.

Nadav K.

Yelp
The Kyiv old fashioned and it was excellent. The Hungarian hot wings are also excellent! Great place for dinner/drinks/ and overall great vibes!

Jonathan E.

Yelp
They are definitely paying for reviews. Deviled eggs that consist of pickled eggs with Mayo only....nope. Drinks are decent but the food is garbage. My Ukrainian friends were with me and it was just bad and trying to market off of something besides good food. Oysters aren't even big enough to taste....bad. Way over priced and service was crap considering we were one of four parties in the whole place. We don't recommend. $80 per person and had a very less than mediocre time. Good ambiance and space if you want a drink though. Absolutely a NOOOO to the food.

Blake A.

Yelp
Went here with a group of 9 and had a really great time. The service was friendly and attentive. But the real highlight was the food which was absolutely delicious. We shared a round of apps; the chicken & mushroom pancakes, potato pancakes, and one of each dumpling dish. The flavors are simple, but incredibly rich and depth that keeps you coming back for more. The duck breast I got was perfectly cooked and seasoned and everyone was very happy with what they ordered (duck leg, lamb, chicken sandwich). I would definitely recommend checking this place out, and don't miss out on the infused vodka flight! That stuff goes down incredibly smoothly and tastes delicious.

Peter X.

Yelp
The food and prices are really good. The infused vodka flight is unique, and I found the owners to be very nice by providing a pickle plate on the house when we mentioned we didn't see it on the menu (I believe they change their menu often).

Jennifer C.

Yelp
The atmosphere and service are top notch and the borscht cocktails was AMAZING! My husband got the clarified porn star martini, and he was hooked. We tried the tuna carpaccio which was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. We also had the oysters, wings, potato pancakes, chicken Kiev, Perogis, and the short rib stuffed cabbage. All of it was gobbled down with nothing left on the plate. We had a large group, and everything was easily shareable. My fav was the perogis, they were perfection!

Steve N.

Yelp
Brand new restaurant cocktail bar on the third floor on Houston street. Right around the corner from Sadelle's. We were looking for a brunch place. Sadelle's was a two hour wait and this one allowed us right in. Great food great service, nice atmosphere on the third floor. Pierogis were terrific and sides excellent. Recommend this as an alternative to Sadelle's. Ukrainian flair so no French toast!!! Unique place.

Uriy Y.

Yelp
Master Chef level delicious, truly high end Ukrainian food with a great balance of classic and new creative cocktails. Highly recommend!

Kyrylo F.

Yelp
So, was in Slava at this Sunday, it wasn't a lot people, what I was really like, we was sitting at the bar, and they already have staff who speak on Ukrainian, service was fast, drinks in first minutes and NEW delicious food. (Before was kitchen which not look like Ukrainian). Now in this place working chief who was winning Master Chief 2019. We was lucky to saw him. Infused vodkas deserves special attention, we like it.

P P.

Yelp
I was extremely disappointed with this restaurant's "new" menu. If it's trying to be a bar/lounge, it should offer more appetizers and small bites. And if it's claiming to be an authentic restaurant, there's very little to actually eat. To start, there were no bread plates and no soups available. The pickles board was okay but tasted like store-bought items. By 7 pm on Saturday, they had run out of chicken, which was a shame. The main course, cabbage rolls, didn't arrive until an hour after the other members of my party had already received their food. Overall, the price, value, and taste of the food did not justify the cost. I spent over $100 per person and left feeling hungry. The menu and service both need significant improvement before I would consider returning to this restaurant.

C S.

Yelp
Had a great meal with some friends from work. The food and service was great. The wait staff were very friendly and knowledgable. The short rib stuffed cabbage was out of the world, flavorful and tender. I also suggest the potato pancakes and the tuna carpaccio.

Brandon M.

Yelp
Went for a friend's birthday. Food (thumbs down) drinks (thumbs down) music so loud you couldn't hear the person sitting across from you speak (thumbs down). And then, to add insult to injury, we placed a food order, and after nearly two (2) hours when we inquired about our food, we were told that the order never printed in the kitchen (how does that happen if a server puts it in?), so no mains at the birthday dinner (The few varenyky we ordered at the outset were also messed up. They missed an order of those, and we had to flag a server down to get that fixed). If anyone had checked on our table to do so much as refill waters and inquire, the food issues could have been sorted. That didn't happen. When I went to the bathroom, however, I saw three servers flirting by the kitchen instead of working, so I think I have a sense of where their priorities were that night. The server's solution at the end of the night (by which time the kitchen was closing): Comp $18 off two rounds of shots that we didn't order (about $100) but that the server saw fit to bring and charge for anyway. I hope this place goes out of business. It does not deserve a second chance, and our server probably has no idea how lucky he is to have a job there, let alone anywhere. Irredimible. If you f up that badly, own it. Not this place. It sucks. Period. Full stop. You've been warned. Also, if you look closely at the "good" reviews on this page, you'll see that they appear to be fake (possibly paid for or written by friends/family members instead of patrons).

Irina I.

Yelp
I'm a Ukrainian-American and I was very excited to hear that a new Ukrainian restaurant had opened up-- but shocked, dismayed, and quite frankly deeply offended by what this establishment offers up as "Ukrainian cuisine." We brought a friend along to introduce him to Ukrainian food and spent the rest of the evening appalled and apologetic for... whatever this was. A serving of "Varenyky" here is 5 tiny thick-doughed ravioli(?) around barely a sliver of filling. "Golubki", described as a "shareable entree," is three pieces the size of a child's pinky finger of tough, charred and rubbery cabbage with barely anything inside atop a spoonful of flavorless tomato sauce. Borscht isn't on the dinner menu at all, instead relegated to a disgusting, undrinkable cocktail of beet juice and vodka. Even the most fundamental aspects of Ukrainian food-- generosity and joyful abundance-- are nowhere to be found here. This restaurant is an insult to Ukrainian culture and culinary traditions on every level. At best, it's an attempt to use Ukraine's current prominence in American awareness to lure the unsuspecting into overpaying for mediocre food, which is offensive enough, but we couldn't help but wonder if it's a Russian propaganda effort to grossly and negatively misrepresent Ukrainian culture to the uninitiated. I left feeling as if someone had slapped me across the face, and took my friend straight over to an *actual* Ukrainian restaurant not far away for a proper Ukrainian meal. My Ukrainian ancestors are crying in their graves to think that anyone would believe that this... abomination... has anything to do with their great and ancient culture. The saying is "Slava UKRAINI". That this restaurant omits Ukraine even from its name tells you everything anyone needs to know about the intentions here.
