Our 17 Rules For Road Tripping | Bon Appétit

"After the eight-hour journey from New York City to Richmond, Virginia, all I want is a burger and a beer. Thankfully, I-64’sBoulevard Burger & Brewhas both (and available for online order ahead of time!). The pitch-perfect smash burger is an ode to Kelly’s, the local burger chain that used to sit here. And with the original 1950s drive-in style building and red-and-white-checked paper under the fries, it doesn’t get more classic American than this.—Bryan Fountain, senior designer" - ByThe Bon Appétit Staff

As soon as we stepped through the door, there was a crowd. Hopefully, that meant the food was good, not that there was bad service. The service was fast and friendly. The only reason I gave 4 stars for the atmosphere is because there's no place to sit and enjoy these great burgers. It was our first time visiting, the same as much of the crowd waiting for their orders. But it wasn't a long wait, and the wait was worth it. I drove home quickly to get to that first bite. We only tried the burgers and wings this time, but we will come back again. Soon.

Google
This is a pick up burger location. You step inside and place your and you can comfortably wait inside while you wait. It appeared packed the daybI visited, don't let that fool you. The order is out fast and loaded! Our party of 3 order the Slay Burger! the Omni Burger, the Hot Chicken and Philly loaded fries! Every item was delicious 😋. I was impressed with the season waffle fries. The service was great and the music made for exciting vibes as you wait for your order.

Google
Absolutely delicious—part of me doesn’t even want to share this hidden gem! 😅❤️ I’m obsessed with this place and low-key worried the lines are about to get crazy! The burgers were incredible—hot, juicy, and bursting with flavor. 🔥 And let’s talk about those Slay Philly Cheesesteak Loaded Fries… a generous portion, perfectly cheesy, and ideal for sharing (if you have to share!) as well as the cheese bites. Gracias a Bessie por las recomendaciones todo muy delicioso! p.s. food is to go it's not a dine-in location ..our food was still very warm when we got home 15 later! get your take out and find a place like rockets landing to sit outside by the river & enjoy 😉 this delicious food!

Google
Very small quaint burger joint. Burgers are made fresh to order smashed with a nice crust. They’re large. They’re definitely for two hands and just outstanding. The Philly cheese fries is a mill in itself. They’re very generous with their portions. The staff is helpful and nice. Just make sure you plan to get your food to go. There’s no place to sit and eat. #YumCity

Google
Tiny place with a big punch. This place packs the flavor in the bag! I absolutely cannot wait until the Chester one opens up.

Google
The burgers were pretty good. The wings fell short of expectations. However, the high volume of music upon entry hinders effective communication with ordering. Pricing is on the higher end, with items such as small chili cheese hot dogs costing $6.50. Furthermore, parking presents a challenge, often necessitating searching for spaces on side streets.

Google
On a positive note, the food was really good, packaged well, made everything right, and the restaurant was tidy. Only cons were that the place was small and only filled people waiting on orders, and my order had an additional 15 minute wait. Would be nice if there was an order screen to see the status or something, but it all worked out in the end. Lady at the front was nice to boot.

Google
I want to love this place. But the quality control is all over the place. The first time I went here the burgers weren’t smashed and lacked flavor. The second time the burgers absolutely slapped, but then I find mold on my bun. I feel like now I can’t trust the quality. Best of luck

Yelp
We ordered the onion rings, slay fries, bacon burger, and turkey burger. Everything was freshly prepared, and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time despite the busy crowd. The burgers were flavorful and very filling -- even a single patty would be large enough to split with someone else. Overall, the food was satisfying, the portions generous, and I would absolutely return.

Yelp
Hmmm, all in all, a bit underwhelming... -- Slay Burger (no pickles, no onions): Incredibly delicious. No complaints. I usually opt for double patties when it comes to smash burgers but one was sufficient. -- Corn Dog Nuggets: Breading is tasty but the dogs were dry and rubbery. They were too hot for the styrofoam, so I'd suggest a different container. You get two freebie sauces, but one of mine was missing. -- Waffle Fries: For $3.49, you don't get much. They visually appeared more seasoned than they tasted. Also, lukewarm. Not too hot for the styrofoam, unfortunately. -- Wings: They have plain wings on their menu which is what I ordered. You get a freebie sauce, but I figured the sauce would be on the side since they also have "BBQ Wings" on their menu. There was no distinction. My wings were doused (not tossed) in BBQ sauce. They were moderately tasty but not at all what I wanted. Next time, I'll just stick with the burger and call it a day. If I want a burger and fries (and better parking), I'll go to Smashed RVA.

Yelp
Slay Burger was delicious. Service was pretty quick, we got there before people really started coming in. Now this to me is a whole in the wall. You not sitting to enjoy your meal, and that's ok. We ate ours in the car.
google avatar

Aljawon A.

Yelp
The burgers were very dry almost inedible, which was quite the disappointment. We order the Big Ounce and a turkey burger. Fries and onions ring were just ok. I probably won't be back, but I was really wanting this place to be much better than it actually was. It felt like this place was being overhyped.

Brad S.

Yelp
Dang shame. Went here after seeing it on Insta. Probably 20 flies attacking you inside while waiting for food. Charged $33 for double slay burger combo with cheese waffle fries. Hot honey chicken sandwich combo with waffle fries. They forgot the waffle fries for the chicken sandwich, the pepper jack cheese was forgotten. The burger didn't have onions, just lettuce and pickles and didn't see or taste the slay sauce. The cheese on the waffle fries was not even melted. Beware. The food was good too, which is why it's a shame. They didn't get a single thing right on my order and there's nowhere to sit so unless you check your bag at the counter by the time you realize you don't have half the items you ordered it's too late. $33 for terrible quality control is just unacceptable. Shame, has potential to be really great. But they gotta fix the flies and making sure people actually get what they order. Won't be back again.

Yelp
Listen... if i lived closer, i would be a billion pounds cuz the way this burger taste.... Omg... 10/10... bologna burger was a little salty but it was still had a good flavor. We ordered it online so it wasn't much interaction but.... When i went in, there was no greeting or anything either... that really deserved me to take a star away.... But the burger was so bomb, im going to keep it at 5

Yelp
I wish I had gotten the opportunity to review Slay Burgers when they were a 5/5, which was not that long ago. I never minded the long-ish waiting times or the lack of in-house dining. But something changed recently, and now they use premade Burger King style onion rings with no actual onion slice in them rather than their old beer battered rings, and the burgers have fallen off dramatically in quality. I can't confirm, but my sense of it is that they've lost their former cook/chef.

Yelp
My fiancé and I came here for lunch after our wheel throwing class at Hand Thrown. I've been wanting to try Slay Burgers for a long time now and am happy I finally did. Their burgers are incredible. If you're looking for juicy, greasy, deliciousness, look no further. This spot is super fun with all its cartoon burgers and anime/fantasy shoutouts on the walls. It's a really casual spot with no tables. They do have benches inside and out front that we ended up eating on. I can't wait to come back and try more things. They offer burgers as well as other goodies like fish sandwiches and chicken nuggets. There are tv menu displays above the cashier. On our visit, I got the omni (I highly recommend this) and my fiancé got the single slayburger (you can do double patty) and a side of cheese curds. If you love cheese and cheese curds, the omni is for you. I'm super stuffed from our delicious burgers and loved how chill the spot was. The person at the cash register was super sweet and helpful. They were kind in explaining their loyalty program to me. Even though it seems more people do takeout here, you are able to eat the burger on a bench like us no problem. Your 2025 resolution should be to eat here.

Yelp
Nothing beats a smash burger and this is easily one of the best in town. It's not too salty, it's perfectly smashed, and just the right size. They use a pretty good bread, and the pickles and house sauce make a great combo. Only thing I do differently is order extra lettuce... I like a little crunch on my burger. The service is good and the space is super cute inside while you wait for your order. The wait isn't long at all, and the staff is sweet.

The D.

Yelp
Delicious!!!! Excellent service, I loved the burgers, very fast... the best burger 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Slay burger was pretty full when I came in during a lunch rush. They do their best to provide ample seating space with the small waiting space. There's no where to really eat inside or outside so be prepared to take your food to go. Staff was quick to take the order and had my food in less than 10 minutes. Only downside was the door was being opened constantly so there were a few flies in the front windows and around the space but as far as I could see they weren't really anywhere near the food. The food was amazinggg! The waffle fries are so crispy and flavorful and they give a good portion! I got the Omni burger and it was delicious. Burger was cooked well, and had so much flavor. I would recommend checking this place out!
google avatar

Gregory F.

Yelp
Someone said this was their favorite burger joint in the RVA area, and I can certainly see why. The Slay Burger was the perfect blend of greasy mess with a unique flavor profile and the perfect smash-burger texture. The cheese curds had just the right amount of crunch and the portion was overly generous. Affordable too and attentive service. What more can you ask for? Oh - and check out all the comics on the wall, they are PRICELESS!

Johan R.

Yelp
The food was great and was quick it was good I had the Philly burger it was so good my kids loved it
google avatar

Yelp
If you are looking for a good smash burger to take home, you can't go wrong with Slay Burger. We went there after Brick Fest and everybody was stuffed after our meal. Everything is made fresh right in front of you and the artwork in the restaurant keeps you entertained while you wait. Add in great service and you have the recipe for a great meal.
google avatar

Fabienne M.

Yelp
This has to be the best burger in Richmond coming from nyc I was very excited to try this place and it was spot on. The artwork on the windows and walls were very cool. Service was quick good and easy. The burgers were fresh and flavorful and definitely a handful very filling. The Omni burger was topped with bacon double patty cheese and slay sauce with cheese curds loved it. Definitely gotta come back and try another burger.
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
The food has been consistently delicious and is so substantial. It's perfectly cooked and so flavorful. Definitely one of our top places to order from. Great value for the money!
google avatar

Cherry F.

Yelp
Are there any turkey burger lovers out there? Here is a spot that has gotten it right! I love the seasoning, size and flavor of my burger. I added Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and little dressing. Since a burger is lonely without onion rings, it made a great addition. The service was great and answered all my problems with a smile. It's a storefront establishment and it's worth standing in line
google avatar

Justain M.

Yelp
Got this for a quick to go lunch and was very impressed! The fries were very good and the burgers were tasty and surprisingly not messy, highly recommend!

James S.

Yelp
Visited over the weekend while dropping my daughter off to college. We were looking for something different, and boy did we find it. The food was hot, good, and filling. Definitely going back the next time I'm in the city.
google avatar

N L.

Yelp
The wait is too long even if you place a pick up order. Waited about an hour. Got home and realized they didn't even add the bacon on my burger that I paid for. The food is decent but with a long wait like this and messing up my order, I am not so eager to go back. It just isn't worth the hassle.
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
I've been twice while visiting my son at VCU. We each got different items each time. Everything was uniformly great. It's a walk up with some seats to wait for your order and all is served to go. The burgers are excellent smash burgers and they offer a bunch of different options. They have non-burger options like fish sandwiches, chicken, or my favorite "The Zzif". It's a thick slice of fried bologna grilled onions, mustard and cheese. It's outstanding. I like a five guys burger so I tend to compare to that. If someone opened a five guys next door to this place, I'd go to Slay Burgers.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
New burger spot in Northside. Very friendly staff. Walk up and place your to go order. No dine in option. Menu is burgers, fries, onion rings, hot dogs. I got the bacon burger, fries and onion rings. They put the fries and onion rings in closed paper boxes, which is not smart, because the steam from the heat makes them soggy by the time you get them home. Even though your food might spill out of the packaging, I highly recommend that they switch to open containers for fries and onion rings. The burger was good, but didn't blow me away. Very filling. I didn't see the combo deals that people have been talking about. Everything I ordered was a la carte. What I paid seemed high for two burgers and two sides. AND the receipt indicated grand opening discounts. Hmmm. I will return and try other items. It's nice to have a burger spot in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Tony H.

Yelp
OMG!!!! THE BEST CHEESE CURDS ANYWHERE! Last place I expected to find the most incredible of delicacies. I also had the Rainey sandwich. Incredible. Did I mention the cheese curds? My group of five just made this our "you fly, I'll buy" restaurant.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Service was great even for a pick up order! We were greeted at the door, and our order was double checked to make sure sauces and utensil were in the bag. Food was great!! Glad to have this spot on the boulevard!! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Maya O.

Yelp
Omg truly the best loaded fries I've ever had. They're Philly cheesesteak waffle fries did not disappoint. The burger was so juicy and amazing. They say dog was average, but still hit the spot with all the toppings and coleslaw. I will be returning.

Nicole B.

Yelp
I was visiting VA and this place came up when searching for food so we gave it a try. The burgers were good, but the chicken fingers were too salty and the fries and onions rings were wayyy overcooked. in addition, they place is small and there were a lot of people hanging inside which made it difficult to move around and get drinks. In addition, the girl working the counter was high.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Slay Burger in Richmond, Virginia, is by far the best place for burgers in the area. The service is quick, and the food is outstanding. I ordered a double bacon burger "all the way," it was huge and packed with flavor. Every bite was delicious. Whenever I'm craving a burger, this is the place I'll be returning to. If you haven't tried them yet, do yourself a favor and check them out--you can thank me later!
google avatar

Elle F.

Yelp
The first thing I noticed when I walked into this new Brookland Park Ave edition was the amazing artwork and decor! There's a mural of a hamburger defeating cartoon versions of the mascots from Burger King, McDonald's, and Wendy's, which actually made me laugh out loud. Impeccable ambiance. The menu is quite vast and we ordered a slay burger and a spicy chicken sandwich with waffle fries. The person at the cash register was super welcoming and friendly and we were impressed to see that they were definitely cooking things fresh behind the counter. Overall, we loved the food, the vibes, and the service. Will definitely be here again!
google avatar

Yul B.

Yelp
Just personal preference but the burger was a little more seasoned than I like so I won't hold that against them. Seems like the seasoning overpowers the beefy taste . But I do understand a lot of people like their burgers seasoned like that. The sides were amazing!! Cheese curds and onion rings were cooked to perfection both have an outstanding texture and flavor. This is not an eat-in establishment. Just advising anyone that wanted to know that part.
google avatar

Brittany C.

Yelp
True hidden gem ! I have never found a good burger spot in RVA until Slay Burger. I tried the waffle fries with the special sauce and it was Delish! Im not crazy about Mayo but this was a good sauce !! Not too heavy on mayo and it was tangy ! The Bacon burger itself was good but the standout to me was the Philly cheesesteak fries. They were loaded with meat and cheese. I gotta try the wings next time! Great food and Great service!
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
My first time here and I must say it was good. I ordered the regular slay burger with the special sauce and it was good. I also ordered the fried chicken. It was but too salty but decent.
google avatar

Tyler C.

Yelp
First time visiting slay burger, and I will say 10/10! The waffle fries were really good but I recommended eating them while they are hot. I ordered the double bacon burger... and I was definitely impressed. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Shelley B.

Yelp
There's a lot of hype these days over Richmond being dubbed the "burger capital of the US" with burger joints cropping up all over the city. And most are jumping on the smashes burger bandwagon with mixed results. Slay Burger....well, slays. They have a small menu, they don't offer up a ton of boujee options like goat cheese and bacon jam but wha they do they do really well. Their smashed burgers actually have a crispy edge to them which adds so much flavor. They've got decent fries and they make a killer chicken sandwich to boot. Just be prepared when you inevitably can't resist the urge to dive in right in your car that you've got plenty of napkins cause it gets messy. And that's a good thing!
google avatar

Victoria F.

Yelp
Those burgers are DAMN good !!! Had my mouth watering from start to finish !!! I like the vibes in there too. It's a little hot, but it's also not that big of a place. The design inside is so cute to me I got a regular bacon double burger and tbh I like how the bacon was ... it's easier to eat that way instead of in strips where you can pull almost EVERYTHING out the burger
google avatar

Tee B.

Yelp
Had to go see what the hype was about! So after a little retail therapy my mom and I headed to @theslayburgers and it did not disappoint! They are were pretty busy with to go and DoorDash so there was a wait but the staff was super patient as I ordered and welcoming! We ordered the Slay Burger ($7.99), Spicy OG Chick ($7.99), onion rings ($3.49), corn dog nuggets ($3.99) and a soda ($2.49). My mom and I rated the burger (4/5) thinly sliced veggies paired perfectly with the smash burger which was seasoned well. The spicy chicken sandwich (4/5) juicy chicken breast which was well seasoned also, nice little kick but it didn't have the slaw on it as described. The corn dog nuggets are your typical nugget but tasty and piping hot (4/5). The onion rings were our only disappointment as they were your basic frozen beer battered rings which they serve a good portion but they were overcooked all crunch very little onion (2/5). I'll try the waffle fries next go round! If you have a taste for good burger and other tasty food go check them out!
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
Was very good once we found a place to eat. Unfortunately no dine in or tables to eat at. Very dull boring looking place. Just ordered at the counter.
google avatar

McKinley W.

Yelp
Glad they picked my neighborhood so I can gain 10 pounds. Just might have a heart attack from this really good food.
google avatar

Cayce C.

Yelp
This is a takeaway place near my house that I've been looking to try but haven't because it's always crazy busy. The stars aligned today and was able to get some for myself. So happy that I did! I got a bacon burger, as is, and it was as advertised, delicious. Quick service, since we ordered online and picked up on the way home. I recommend if you're looking for fresh, hot, yummy takeout that's not pretentious or stupid expensive.
google avatar

Blake P.

Yelp
The burger was amazing. I went right when it opened at 11 service was great. This place is set up for take out

Shelley M.

Yelp
Great vibe! Super friendly service - all the staff were awesome and helpful with questions about the menu. One staff member, noticing my daughter looked a little bored while we were waiting for our food, gave her some stickers which is a small thing but goes to show you what the atmosphere was like inside. The cheese curds were excellent. Decor is great too. We would absolutely return. There is no place to eat inside (or tables outdoors) so it's truly a "to go" place.

John P.

Yelp
Don't try to order in the restaurant. Tonight they were turning away people that had not ordered online. Despite ordering online and showing up at the time relayed in the email, I waited 30 additional minutes for my food. When I finally received my bag of food, it was cold and soggy. There were plenty of people in the restaurant cooking the food, but nobody was bagging it up and giving it to the people that ordered it. The end result was a whole lot of people standing in the restaurant, waiting. This restaurant needs to do better.
google avatar

Stacy B.

Yelp
Super friendly guys at Slay are awesome as well as the burger and curds! Slay!! Recommend!!!
google avatar

Diedra B.

Yelp
Visited slay burger !!! When I first arrive I noticed it was street parking so it was a bit of a struggle but not to bad . We arrived at the place and it was really small on the inside but very decorative and very clean . The drink station and the condiments was very cleaned and kepted up which I really liked . It did not scream Covid lol . There prices to aren't to bad , a burger and fries with our drink will run you about $12 . The guy at the register who took my order was pretty nice . I order two single bacon burgers and it came with onions , bacon , pickles , lettuce and cheese with slay sauce . I did order mines with no pickles but unfortunately there were a bunch of pickles on my sandwich. If you a person who likes pickles trust they are not stingy with them lol . I was a little skeptical because I thought it was a frozen Patty but nope to my surprise it was smashed ground beef ! Fresh too . The burgers was a really nice size and was heavy but a tab bit salty . I'm my honest opinion it didn't need any salt . . The bun was toasted and soft but the slay sauce just tasted like mayo . The waffle fries was seasoned but did taste like the oil needed to be changed . Wasn't crazy over the burgers but I am open to trying other sandwiches they have .

Yelp
YUM YUM YUM! My partner and I live in the North Side and have been anxiously waiting for Slay Burgers to open - they did not disappoint! The burger was super flavorful with different elements complimenting each other - from the pickles and onions, to the melty cheese, slay sauce and of course the tasty hamburger meat seasoned perfectly. Smash style is my favorite but sometimes the patty's are too thin - not here at Slay. The patty's were thin but not too thin and the double patty burger was plenty filling. We wanted waffle fries (per their menu) but they had krinkle cut which were somewhat disappointing because they were soggy, but we won't hold it against Slay! ;) we will definitely be back and I foresee Slay Burgers becoming a staple of North Side! **there is no indoor seating, everything is togo style. We ordered at the counter and waited about 20 min which we thought was good at 5:30pm on a Saturday. There is an option to order online which I would recommend!
google avatar

George W.

Yelp
This was the burger I've been craving!! Got the double bacon cheeseburger and it was yuge. Guy at the counter (owner?) super friendly. Fries and onion rings top notch. Artwork very cool. No place to sit inside, but used the bench on the sidewalk.

Heather R.

Yelp
Dear Slay Burgers As I eat my turkey burger onion rings and waffle fries and dance in my seat, THIS IS THE BEST TURKEY BURGER FROM A TAKE OUT SPOT IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. The service was amazing I start my diet next week but slay burger will forever be my cheat spot ‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
I have eaten here twice. There is no indoor seating, so all food is served to-go. Yesterday I ordered the OG spicy chicken sandwich with waffle fries and a fountain drink. Today I ordered a Double Slay Burger with waffle fries and a fountain drink. The burger is $10.29, the waffle fries are $4.62 and the fountain drink is $2.87. This totals to just under $20 with tax. That is an expected expensive lunch. The previous review stated that pricing was affordable because all sandwiches come with fries and a drink. That is incorrect; fries and drinks only came free with sandwiches on the restaurant's opening day. Both times that I ate here the sandwiches and fries were soggy. I still enjoyed the burger despite it being on the soggy side, but the chicken sandwich was not good. The waffle fries were also too soggy to be enjoyable. I will give them another shot because I live close by and want for this place to succeed.
google avatar

Juan V.

Yelp
Great burger! Was on the way home from ikea and this place seemed like a decent spot to pop in. Punched above expectations and would definitely return.

Jahke H.

Yelp
Food is great just need to add the double turkey burger to the menu and then I'll be able to leave my 5 stars
