The Best Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland’s St. Johns Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Slim’s is an institution, landing between a diner and a dive bar on the main drag of St. Johns. Neighborhood locals roll into Slim’s for hangover breakfasts of biscuits and gravy or corned beef hash. In the evenings, the sidewalk tables fill with folks housing mozzarella sticks and knocking back pints; inside, DJs and bands play for the crowds, while St. Johns lifers take their earned spots at the bar." - Rebecca Roland

Look up at everything the next time you go in there! They never ever clean anything! The fans are dripping with dust. It’s absolutely disgusting. Whoever the owner is please clean your restaurant. I’m sure if a health inspector walked into your establishment this would not be OK! To add to it, I have been in here and these fans have been on! Could you imagine all of that falling on you while you eat and drink. Gross!

I should not have went there for food. Although the food was pretty good the service was not. I tipped $14 on on a $40 tab hoping that would make a difference. I was told the grill didn't work so we had to go with fryer food. After paying and waiting for about ten minutes I was told they ran out of mushrooms. I was not offered anything at a discount or anything to make up for it. Just had to go with oninon rings. Then I had to remind the cook I had ordered three meals not just two. My friends Husband had just died earlier that day so I can say with confidence I will never go there again, nor would I tell anyone else to go there. Not if they expect any kind of customer service or decent tarter sauce.

I absolutely love this place. It has to be one of the coolest places in St John's. Food is good. Drinks are inexpensive and delicious. And it is animal friendly. The vibe is always great. The staff is extreme friendly. And it has a great atmosphere and brings in a really fun crowd. This is my new favorite place in St John's. I will definitely be back. Plus Pinball!

Restroom is dirty. Food is good. Workers there are drunk.

drinks were okay for the price and the bartender was nice to us. a person at our table made the horrific mistake of asking our server for extra sauce and apologized for not ordering it at the bar. he just went "can you order it the RIGHT WAY next time so i don't have to make multiple trips??" and stomped away before we could apologize again or say anything else. funnily (and uncomfortably) enough, we still had people at our table on the same ticket who were waiting for food so he still had to make additional trips to our table regardless, except now it was extremely awkward after the tantrum. you'll probably be treated fine here if you're a man.

I’ve been here a few times. The drinks and prices are decent. Food on the other hand? I’d give a fair warning. The kitchen allowed a woman with her dog to sit at the counter where food was being prepped. The dog was pawing and panting on the same counter the food was being prepared. I never seen anything like that! Absolutely disgusting! I flagged the bartender and she said “the owners are dog friendly”. She basically disregarded the entire situation. I will never, ever go here again because food handling was so so so so so so poor. Still shocked!

Definitely your classic Portland dive bar. The atmosphere is great. Clean restrooms. Good service and a pretty decent breakfast. There is some seating out front for those that like to people watch! Definitely recommend.

I ran into Hamad and was very pleased since he has been out of town for a long time and his bar staff has largely done a good job supporting any needs that should go to him. The staff here historically has always upstanding. Gunner was the single most talented and capable and human rights advocate person to ever grace this place! People don’t get rowdy. It’s a chill spot. Neighborhood AF. Breakfast is banging and I literally get the blue cheese steak to go more than once a week sometimes it’s so good. Breakfast has great vibes to start your day and it’s never rowdy. You can catch people chilling and having meetings throughout the day. I enjoy the bench style outdoor seating booths that are kind of cozy and intimate. This is THE spot for downtown St John’s historically so I will be back hoping for great vibes. Most of the bar staff know the neighborhood I well enough but I do have a little problem with the enabling of the rumor mill around here. I personally get villianized by a regular patron who approached me romantically— we had no prior history than him knowing my late ex and that I planned to move back here. Rumor mill has it wrong. Not changing spots for dirty looks. Food and company are too good!
