I not usually make reviews but the moment I stepped into Slotskælderen I knew I was in for something special. The Danish charm, genuinely friendly and the interaction felt personal, that made our experience even more memorable. The food? Absolutely divine! -Ah! But its just smørrebrød. - You wouldn’t understand!! We choose couple those ( beef tartare, smoked herring, flæskesteg). Even the simplest was made freshly!!!. By the way, all the dishes are served in traditional Royal Copenhagen ceramics.

The food was great! Really enjoyed the 4 dishes! Service was friendly! But the bill for 4 dishes (plus 2 bottles of small water) that looked like appetizers was 966.17 kr which is about $148 usd for 1 person. I didn’t dbl check w them and left the restaurant then I converted it to usd and was surprised. I got 2 dishes that were tiny shrimps fresh from the Baltic Sea. Was delicious, a smoked trout and fish roe over cream and bread. All in all very good but the price is a bit much. All the best to those who go!

We went to this very nice and quaint restaurant this afternoon. The service was very friendly and courteous. The smørrebrød was sensational and the beer was cold.... was simply wonderful.

Staffs have smiley face and very cheerful. Food : Shrimp & salmon taste good. I expect it would be brown bread, but it is a piece of thin white bread. Salmon makes the bread too wet Beef tart tart is great . the one with heavy cheese also put white bread on bottom. It should be better to be brown bread instead. Place is cozy and feel some history behind which is nice. Price is ok vs qualify but wish they can put more brown bread instead of white bread more.

Great selection of traditional open-faced sandwiches. Many types of herring, shrimp, pork, roast beef, and more. You must try it. Don't forget a beer and schnapps / aquavit with your meal. But understand, one sandwich is not enough. Locals usually eat 3-5 servings each!

Crowded to the point of packed, unlikely to get a seat without reservation. Service was good but slow because of the crowd. Traditional taste and presentation. Reasonably priced. Recommended for the vibe.

Whenever I am in Copenhagen, I visit this genuine and charming Danish open sandwiches restaurant. I have been coming here for about 30 years, and I have never been disappointed. You have a choice of approximately 60 different sandwiches consisting of one small slice of rye bread topped with a mountain of whatever takes your fancy. We Scandinavians start with fish: pickled herring, prawns, salmon or smoked halibut (I normally choose two or three different types). Then you can have e.g. steak tartar, roast beef, ham, Dyrlaegerens Natmad (liver mousse with thin slices of salt beef, aspic and raw onion), ox tongue etc., and you can finish with a warm sandwich with plaice and Danish tartar sauce (remoulade), Danish hamburger (hakkebøf) with a fried egg on top or roast pork. Scandinavians drink aquavit and beer with this food. Afterwards, you can have coffee with kransekage (small cake made with marzipan) and a glass of Calvados. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Slotskælderen claims to have opened in 1797. It may even be true. Slotskælderen means the "Castle Cellar." Slotskælderen is serious about maintaining the Danish tradition of smørrebrød-- open faced sandwiches always eaten with a knife and fork, always at lunch, always accompanied by beer and snaps. (Warning: do not ask fors "schnaps." Ever. In Danish it's "snaps," with the letter a pronounced like ahhhh. Our dear friends Elke and Per selected Slotskælderen and made the reservation. You need a reservation. There's no menu. Instead the host invites your table up to a counter with examples of each of the sandwiches. You tell him which ones you want -- two per person is plenty -- and 10 minutes later they show up at your table. I had one sandwich with smoked eel + scrambled eggs and one with gravlaks. The first was great. The second was even better. I don't think I've never had better gravlaks. (Note: gravlaks is salmon that has been cured for 24 hours in a mixture of salt, sugar, dild and snaps. It is not smoked or cooked. It so good that it is life altering.) Slotskælderen is in fact in a cellar. And it was noisy with groups of mostly men having business lunches and getting louder as they drank beer and snaps. It's an experience-- you're not eating sandwiches. You're are imbibing Danish culture -- excellent food, camaraderie with your companions and great drink. It's way more fun than a museum or a canal tour and key to understanding Denmark.

Yelp
Traditional Danish food, my roommate recommended me try, it was a highlight of my trip. The ambiance mixed with the no menu aspect made it a very unique and unforgettable experience. Food was top tier and service was welcoming to all. Also recommend schnapps with the meal!

Yelp
I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. Very tight sitting, the food was underwhelming and overpriced. We asked for plain old tap water, but got two bottles of water instead. Maybe it was a misunderstanding, but $5.50 for each was a bit too much. $11 for two small bottles of water? Also, when she will brought the water she had broken the label so we couldn't send it back. Not our best dining experience. There are many other better places in the city. For example, we had a very nice meal at Cofoco. Pricey, but excellent food.

Yelp
Its been a few years since I visited, but I was recently thinking about his restaurant and the wonderful sandwiches we had. Everything was so good. The best open faced sandwiches you can have. Wish I could go visit all the time. Thank you for the wonderful food and the great memories.

Yelp
Best open sandwich I had in town so far. Lots of business people eat there for lunch. Elegant display with dishes. Fresh ingredients.

Yelp
A traditional and long established restaurant in Copenhagen. Usually catered to the Danish royalty. It is well known for lunch, traditional open sandwiches. I would rate this higher than Schoenemann mainly due to better atmosphere.

Yelp
Good experience of the danish open sandwich! The staff who greeted us was amazing! Very attentive and tried his best to communicate in English!

Yelp
We loved this traditional Danish restaurant. Only problem was that we couldn't possibly eat all that we wanted to try! Service nice and such a beautiful presentation that we ended up back at the Royal Copenhagen store to buy a set of dishes for ourselves. A real gem.

Yelp
By far the best in Copenhagen, smörrebröd only, together with Schönnemans. Serious clientele. Book. Lunch only.
