First things first, I've only been here for their Cincinnati-style chili. I spent way too much time at the Skyline down on Ludlow when I was a student at the University of Cincinnati, and while I realize I can special order cans of it from the Cincinnati-based Fred Meyer/Krogers, it's not quite the same.
That being said, Slow Fox isn't quite the same either, especially during a pandemic. My typical Skyline order was a large 4-way, heavy onion, heavy spaghetti, and two cheese coneys yes/yes (mustard and onions), so I went with an onion 4-way here, dining in their outdoor courtyard. Like many restaurants today, they're using baking trays as serving trays, and the 4-way was in a cardboard togo container, with a package of oyster crackers and some biodegradable utensils. I also asked for some hot sauce, and they offered me some of their house habanero-based sauce.
Compared to Skyline, it was a little skimpy on the cheese, and the hot sauce definitely didn't lend itself to the oyster bombs I remember, and the spaghetti was a little firm, not lending itself well to the fork cut-n-scoop, but the chili definitely had the right notes and took me back to my undergrad days. Definitely a solid take on Cincinnati-style, and one that I went back for the next weekend after my first trip there.
My second trip there, I also ordered the beets and tubers salad, which was a special, and a nice cold, creamy salad with big chunks of beets and potatoes.
The outdoor courtyard location is great, with some rad murals on the buildings, and a window to order from.
If they were in Portland, I'd definitely be going frequently, but even with them requiring a jaunt across the river, I can see myself going semi-regularly
