The Best Restaurants in West Chester | Eater Philly

"A swanky, lowly lit bar with no TV screens in sight might be just what you need to reconnect with your loved ones over some excellent food. Make no mistake though, Slow Hand’s expertise with liquid libations does not get in the way of the kitchen’s culinary prowess. A farm-to-table focus drives the creative menu with fun dishes like foie gras-laced chicken nuggets and hearty stuffed peppers." - Sam Herring

We love stopping here after the Farmer’s Market for a treat. Sit outside with the pup and enjoy the good food and great drink options. The Buttercorn infused Tequila drink is lovely. And can’t go wrong with their salads, cornbread, and deviled eggs 😈🥚

Rachael Martin

Google
We stumbled across this place on our way back from longwood gardens today. It’s super cute and the food was very good. Definitely recommend the corn ribs and the deviled eggs. Service was very quick.

Amanda Newnam

Google
Sara provided us with excellent service late night on a busy Friday. We love it here, especially because we can sit outside with our pup and still enjoy the incredible musicians that play here every weekend. The cocktails are top notch.

We had my brother's wedding reception here yesterday. From the moment we walked in until the last guest left, everything was handled with such grace, professionalism, and warmth. Natalie & Greg commanded the bar leaving no guest thirsty. While Matt made sure everything ran smooth, and the bride & groom happy. To ensure the night ran like clockwork, I had the privilege of meeting Chef Elliott. The guests couldn't stop raving about the food. It was a culinary delight and you could taste the love he put into the food he plated for our party. I understood last night why this is one of my family's favorite spots! Thank you to this team for making a memorable event for a special couple.

Google
This is a great spot for some very well-made cocktails and tasty small plates. They have a good selection of mains as well for both brunch (at least on the weekends) and dinner, but the small plates are so good that one is better off getting 5 or 6 to share with a group. The deviled eggs, hot chicken and their version of sliders are all fantastic. The atmosphere is hip and dimly lit, fairly quiet so conversation is easy, and the booths are comfortable and spacious. The service is quick, helpful and attentive. I highly recommend a stop here.

Google
This is probably my favorite bars for great drinks and a lovely atmosphere. If you’re looking for a nice vibey bar that doesn’t have the college town feel and has incredible mixed cocktails this is your spot. While I will still continue coming here, I will only be sitting at the bar as the service in the dining sections is often unreliable. The majority of my experiences have been great, however when I came here last week for happy hour i was extremely disappointed with the waitress and service (I think she was spread too thin or maybe she was new). We came for happy hour thinking we could at least have 2 rounds before it ended, but after a 45 min wait and watching the 4 top next to us get their drinks within 5 minutes of ordering, I was a bit upset. (Note: we’ve been here when it was slammed and haven’t experience poor service like this, this day was NOT slammed and they had multiple waitresses and bartenders working). The food is always hit or miss as well, however I appreciate that they have a seasonal menu. Recommend the appetizers and dessert! Overall, this bar has SO MUCH potential in being the best spot in WC but I think service needs to get tighter and the menu should stick to the basics without changing so frequently. We’ll still continue coming here forever probably, judging by the pics we’ve been here at least 100 times lol.

I recently dined at Slow Hand for brunch and was quite disappointed with my experience. I ordered a salad that cost $14, but honestly, it was very mediocre and way too small for the price. I could have easily whipped up a better version at home in just two minutes for a fraction of the cost. To make matters worse, it was missing two key ingredients—bacon and almonds—that the menu promised. Overall, it was just average and ordinary, definitely not worth the money. On the bright side, the Bloody Marys were delicious! However, given the limited menu options for someone like me who avoids eggs and gluten, I think I’ll be heading across the street to Sedona from now on. They serve an amazing salad for a few bucks less, and the portion size is significantly larger. I just can’t justify returning to Slow Hand when there are better options nearby.

Yelp
Favorite weekend brunch spot. Great biscuits and sausage gravy, pork belly BLT and fried chicken. They're known for specialty cocktails, but the food is always interesting and delicious as well. Cozy atmosphere in beautifully renovated old building.

Yelp
Definitely a fun atmosphere and great bands but the service is usually a miss and the food is super weird and not good. Fun place to stop by if you sit with the right bartender though.

Yelp
One of the first one star reviews i've given in my life. Wish I could give zero stars. Disappointed with the Service I had a terrible experience at Slow Hands in West Chester, particularly with the service at the bar on the first floor. The bartender was incredibly inattentive and unprofessional. I was there at a steady and slow time, Saturday at 2:30pm. After closing out my tab for drinks, one grilled cheese, and hash browns, I realized my grilled cheese sandwich (which I had ordered 40 minutes earlier) still hadn't arrived. Despite trying to get her attention, she actively avoided eye contact and didn't bother checking in with me. When I finally was able to ask about my order once she stopped ignoring me, she brushed me off with a vague "it's being checked on" and would not give an approximate wait time. I waited as long as I could, but I eventually had to leave to catch my Amtrak, forfeiting the sandwich entirely. When I told her I was leaving and planned to address the issue with my credit card company, which I was only able to do so because she finally wandered over to me as she saw me standing up and putting my coat on, she suddenly found the time to void my bill and recharge me for the drinks only--something that could have been handled much earlier. This experience was frustrating and unprofessional. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for friendly or timely service. Please save your money and sanity by supporting a different business. bartender description: female-presenting with tattoos)

Yelp
I've been here a few times and it has always been great! The food is delicious and they have some unique plates. Right now they have a Christmas pop up upstairs complete with holiday cocktail and it is so festive and fun! I felt bad because it was so crowded and there was limited staff but the vibe was so good I didn't mind the extra wait!

Jill B.

Yelp
Very cozy, speakeasy type vibe. We usually sit at the bar to enjoy their delicious apps and craft cocktails. Love Slow Hand!

Yelp
I needed to grab a bite late and they were open. I was a little skeptical because of the music they advertised but I went anyway. The place was empty because it was late. Service was attentive and fairly quick. I ordered the stuffed peppers. They were vegetarian but I could add protein. They said they were out of chicken (did I mention it was late?) so I got shrimp. These were absolutely the best stuffed peppers I've ever eaten! Stuffed with all kinds of veggie goodies -- and the stuffing wasn't soft and mushy like stuffed peppers often are. Poblano peppers gave it a lot of zip, black-eyed peas that were just barely done gave it an interesting texture. The Manhattan was good too. I would definitely return if I ever get back to West Chester PA.

Kate C.

Yelp
We made a reservation for downstairs and ask them what holiday cocktails they have to which they responded with none they're only available upstairs. Then we tried to order some kind of cocktail and it was sold out then we go to put an appetizers many of which were also sold out then the waitress comes back out a few minutes after happy hour ended and said do we want anything else but they're gonna be full price. We decide to put in a few entrées to share, which again many of which were sold out we left feeling very hungry still and then finally went upstairs to get a holiday cocktail and some of those were even sold out. I will not be returning .

Loreen W.

Yelp
Went to visit on Dec 2 and most menu items were unavailable. We had to leave and eat somewhere else Holiday drinks were tasty

Marion L.

Yelp
FYI.... If you plan to go to Sleigh Bar(upstairs), call ahead and check for a private party. We drove over an hour and found out there was a private party. This was not advertised online anywhere. Really disappointed! Also, we said we could sit down stairs and then hostess said it was reservations only. Online says no reservations. Grr!

Yelp
Slow Hand participated in the recent WC restaurant week and was recommended by a friend who really enjoys their bar. My friend who made our reservations chose here because a few other spots that she had listed higher were booked completely. We had no wait for a table which was one of the four seater high tops in the middle. I sat on the aisle side but my friends who sat in the middle said later they felt like the table on the other side of the thin divider were eating with us because other than a pole that does between the tables parallel to the table top, there is nothing so it's really like a continuation of the table on the other side of the divider. They mentioned that they heard everything the other table was saying and at times felt bad because it was clear our conversation was clearly overtaking their experience because of the layout. The restaurant week menu was $50 and you got a small plate, large plate and dessert. The menu had a lot of the options available on the main menu. I was the only one at my table who went for the restaurant week menu, the rest did a la cart. I didn't do any alcohol but my friends seemed very pleased with their margaritas and aperol spritz. For food - My small plate was deviled eggs. I LOVE deviled eggs; I'm used to the basic that people have a parties, and now I feel like restaurants really have expanded on them. The eggs were beautiful with small blackened shrimp on top. They tasted delicious but they were ICE COLD. Not just chilled, but cold enough to send chills in my teeth. For my large plate I ordered the salmon. I was surprised when the server asked how I would like my fish cooked in terms of medium, well done, etc. I have only been asked that once in my life before and I am thrown off because I don't think of fish in that way. I went with the chef's recommendation ( can't remember now). Fish was fine, it wasn't to die for but it wasn't bad either. The potatoes pave that comes as a side was this block of scalloped potatoes that I enjoyed and thought were really unique. Dessert - I went with the pecan cake. Once again, it was very cold. I wasn't expected it to be so cold; it was hard to use my fork to break off a piece. It wasn't my favorite dessert. Service - while I enjoyed having plenty of time to talk to my friends, the service was very slow.

Yelp
Stopped here for a cocktail on a Wednesday night during happy hour. Was surprisingly quiet and the bartender was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, made an excellent cosmo. Didn't try food but would come back for the cocktails and ambiance alone.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Went tonight with 15 to have a drink and the upstairs bar service was terrible do yourself a favor and venture elsewhere!

Yelp
The service is consistently good. I enjoy the food and drinks at night and for brunch! Fun environment and cool ambiance.

Case H.

Yelp
Not the best experience. Food was not the best as well as service lack luster for sure. Good vibe for a cocktail but not for dinner.
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
I came in for a Friday brunch with two coworkers, there was no one else in the place. Not sure if that's a good thing or not! Either way, we had a decent experience. The service was good, as it should be in an empty restaurant and everything came out quickly. My boss ordered sliders as her meal, I tasted them and thought they were pretty good. My other coworker had pancakes and they were very tasty and fluffy. I had the beet salad and the dressing was amazing but I really enjoyed the goat cheese crouton most of all. My boss and I also had mimosas. They were good but I felt they were overpriced for the size. We're likely to return sometime.

Yelp
I'll keep this short and sweet! I've been here a few times now, different times during the day (brunch, happy hour, dinner). Each visit was a pleasant experience. I have nothing remotely negative to say! The wait staff has always been kind, attentive, and helpful! During the warm months they have outdoor seating. They have live music from time to time. There's a large bar on the main floor. And there's a bar upstairs, that offers more of a private lounge experience if you can snag one of those tables! There's a TV upstairs if you're trying to catch a game. The closest parking would be street parking surrounding the block or a parking garage on E Market/High St.

Yelp
Stopped in here last weekend for a late lunch/early dinner on Sunday. The friend I was with loves it here and since we were shopping down the street, it was perfect. It's very nice inside-not in a fancy way, but in a clean/minimalist and slightly industrial way. It's farm to table so the menu isn't large which is fine with me! I had the stuffed cabbage (vegetarian) and my friend had the shrimp appetizer. Would love to come back for a date night and try a few other menu items and maybe a drink or two!
google avatar

Yelp
I have been wanting to try Slowhand for a while now. I had no trouble getting a Sunday brunch res. There was only one other group dining in the restaurant. It was so hot out so we opted to sit inside for a reprieve, but it was equally as hot inside. While its a very cool concept and design, I felt as though it was way too dark in there for a Sunday brunch. We decided to have a small snack to support the business. We ordered the Aguachile. I was blown away by this small plate. It was a perfect snack for two and I did not feel gipped by the size. It was rather large for tapas. Fresh shrimp, jalapeño, cilantro, red onion, Fresno chiles and potato chips. Very delicious and light. Well balanced. I would definitely return for dinner. Hoping the temperature was just a fluke.

Yelp
Fun place with good live music............ BUT $18 for a martini? Pretty ridiculous!

Yelp
I came here for brunch with my mom and sister. I got the breakfast sandwich in a biscuit and it was amazing. The biscuit had great flavor! It was a lot for a breakfast sandwich so get it if your hungry. My mom got the quiche and my sister the standard breakfast. My sister loved the bread that came with her breakfast. Overall the food was good! Our waiter was very nice and attentive. The place was pretty empty and people kept walking by looking in the windows. I hope they give it a try!
google avatar

Yelp
I scheduled a reservation for Friday afternoon around 6. It wasn't crowded when we arrived and we were seated immediately. Our server was very nice and attentive to our needs throughout the meal. We ordered a pair of margaritas, which were not the greatest. The food made up for it though. The shrimp was fresh and flavorful, but I wish there were more than 3. The deviled eggs were soft and layered with this creamy and tangy filling. I could've ate a dozen. And the scallops were cooked to perfection; they had a buttery, sweet tasting flavor, and the couscous offset a great balance for a perfect dish.

Yelp
What a really neat spot. The food is literally handcrafted and pleasing to the palate. They have a great selection of brews and most, if not all are local. Ambience is great, staff is very pleasant and accommodating, and it's walkable from anywhere in the town / borough of West Chester. One last note is, it's not a college hangout, which I enjoy

Matthew S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and service. Tasty drinks and a live performance by The Sermon. They were awesome.

Yelp
Live Slow Hand. Drinks are always top notch. Weekends there is always a good band! Food is always good. Best Nashville Hot Chicken in town!

Pat B.

Yelp
Sat at bar preferred a booth but were told they were reserved?? Drinks watered down. Couple seated next to us left half their drinks. Shrimp n grits good. Order of jambalaya not so great. Not worth the $$. Ambiance nice

Yelp
My brother and sister in law had their wedding minimony reception upstairs at Slow Hand this past weekend. The service was top notch right from the beginning. We were greeted by friendly, talented bar tenders who whipped up some of the best cocktails we've ever had. The raw bar, cheese and meats, and other cocktail hour food was all delicious. They allowed for the jazz band to play next to the bar for the evening, such a nice touch! We were seated at a beautifully decorated long table for dinner. The menu consisted of an 8 course meal. When I say that every dish was better than the last, I mean it. Service continued to be phenomenal. The flavors and creativity of the chef were apparent and some of the best dishes I've had in a LONG time. The chef even came to the table at the end of the night to chat, we were very impressed by his work. We were extremely happy with the quality of the food, the service, and the entire evening hosted at Slow Hand. I highly recommend them for any private event!!!

Yelp
Wowza! What an amazing experience. We had a little bit off the happy hour menu and a little bit off the regular menu. We ordered the salmon sliders (smoky goodness), loaded hashbrown (I mean...), deviled eggs (topped with crispy shrimp), cucumber tea sandwiches (amazing umami), lamb ribs with German potato salad (I now love lamb ribs), chicken and foie gras nuggets (holy mother...SO good, SO decadent) and cocktails...great selection of wine, beer and cocktails. Service was impeccable...you can tell when an entire restaurant staff passionate about what they do, and this place is a shining example. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Made a reservation for Slow Hand New Year's Eve. The food was not impressive. Ordered a salad that came out with my meal-- my dining partners meal arrived 10 minutes after mine-- and his was hamburgers-- I wanted to like this place the interior was cool-- we will give it another try

Yelp
I really like this place, so much so I've been here 3 times in 6 weeks, and I live 45 minutes away. The first two times were for drinks. A great varietal beer selection, an excellent Old Fashion, and a creative homemade cocktail named the Slow Hand, were expertly prepared, ONCE the bartender got around to waiting on me. Three different bartenders on three different visits and all of them slow. And while we're at it, the barstools seem old and lean towards the front, creating an awkward angle at the waist for those of us with bad backs. Other than drinks, I stopped back while I was in the neighborhood for lunch the other day. I had a wonderful salad with avocado and salmon. It was delicious, very fresh and small for being listed under "Large Plates". But a solid 4 stars. If you are in West Chester, this is way better than Iron Hill, and as good as Stove and Tap.

Suzi M.

Yelp
We've been here for drinks before and those were great so we decided to try brunch. MAJOR regrets. My salad was mostly raw red cabbage while my boyfriend's French toast was completely void of any flavor and was essentially custard as it was so undercooked. All of this after waiting 30 minutes for two meals that take less than 10 minutes to make at home. We won't be eating here again.
google avatar

George W.

Yelp
We stopped by to see the band The Sermon! play. We sat towards the back, hoping to be able to talk a little bit, but the volume of the music was so incredibly loud. It was impossible. Being a sound geek like I am, I noticed that there was absolutely no sound absorbing paneling or acoustics treatment Any place in the venue. It was really uncomfortable, and we left after just one drink. Service was good and beer prices fair.
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
Overall great experience but dang are those booths tight when you have a few larger folks eating next to you!

Kiersten R.

Yelp
Their food and drinks were so good! Unique cocktails and entrees and I loved the vibe!

Yelp
JACKIE IS THE BOMBBBBB!!!!! i have never had better service in my life. my new favorite spot!

Yelp
Slow Hand. This restaurant deserves better than looking out at a huge eye sore construction project complete with no sidewalk access. It screams DEAD MAN ZONE...WARNING TO ALL WHO COME NEAR. The decor is minimalistic cool. A classic Conway Twitty photo patrols the restaurant from the bar. Their take on the Old Fashion was INCREDIBLE. The burnt orange trick is genius. Instantly this has achieved best in town status for an old fashioned. The BBQ Pulled Pork was solid, not as Smokey as preferred, but nice. NASHVILLE HOT CHIC - the wings were YUGE, tasty and a nice take on our new favorite But it's their frying game that stand outs out over every bar in town. The beer battered tempura style onion ring was light yet held strong. Absolutely delicious as well was the not too greasy pome frites. Service was how we like it...there when needed, respectable of our desire to be alone to connect after a long week.

Dd D.

Yelp
No stars but yelp said I had to give at least 1. Bad management!!!I saw a female manager barraging a young server and it made our experience miserable! Badly done Bougie food doesn't make the grade. Not feeling it!
google avatar

Sheryl M.

Yelp
We are vegan and chef went out of his way to help us out with amazing food and dessert ! Excellent music and excellent food. What more do you need, I had excellent company!

Yelp
Slow Hand is a beautiful restaurant. I get a very clean and crisp feeling when I walk through the door. The staff is super friendly and accommodating here. Their beverage menu is extensive with many great beer selections on tap and delicious cocktails to choose from. Their food menu is limited which is nice so you no one spends a half hour flipping through lots of pages. My friend and I met for happy hour which runs 5-7. The specials featured on 7/11 were $1 off drafts, $5 Old Fashions $5 slushy drink and $5 special vodka drink. They also offered $5 onion rings and $5 ham croquettes. We ordered the onions rings to split and each had our own Belly Bombers (three sliders). I also had two grapefruit sculpins and my friend had a mojito and a beer. At the end, our bill came to $59. The onions rings were so good and I loved the sauce that it came with. The burgers were ok, not really anything to get too excited about. Cheese is $0.50 extra. The atmosphere and staff are worth the visit but I feel like it was pretty expensive for a casual happy hour visit.

Lauren S.

Yelp
What a great place for a delicious dinner. I've been here twice each time with a friend and both times the food has been outstanding. It's definitely somewhere I can count on for a good meal and a trendy atmosphere. The deviled eggs are to die for btw.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for drinks when starting out the Friday night in West Chester and had a neat time. It's definitely very elevated looking, especially compared to the previous restaurant that was in there and I'm happy about it. Loved the decor, the bar tenders and the drinks were good. The kitchen is open late so we actually ordered delicious food at 11pm which was exciting to me! Had the sliders and they had great flavor but a bit too thick of a bun for the meat. Price was pretty fair for the atmosphere and quality of food/drink. The big guy next to me ordered the hot chicken and actually said "sweet mother of God" at how hot it was. I see another reviewer complained that the portions were small but I don't think there was the realization that this is indeed a tapas restaurant (at least for now). So far so good and I hope it will only get better.
google avatar

B X.

Yelp
Perhaps you're looking to wait 40 minutes for a salad that never shows up? This is the place for you. Went here for my bday, super disappointed. I can't comment on any of food and the taste because I never got to try it. This place has excellent cocktails, they are obviously incapable of basic food orders. I'll never set foot in here again. What a joke.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Update to my last not so great review - after posting about our experience, the GM reached out to us and so graciously gave us a gift card to come back and try slow hand again. (Jacob, if you're seeing this, thank you so much). We did go back and so happy we did, we actually got the same server as before and this time around she was super attentive, our orders were correct, drinks were super good, overall a way more pleasant meal. We definitely will be back and have been already. It's not technically my favorite menu in town but I am so impressed with the follow up from Jacob and the difference in the experience, definitely want to continue to support that. Always 5 stars to small restaurants/businesses that care about their customers.

Yelp
Excellent Cocktails and the Shishito Peppers were amazing! Our only mistake was not staying for dinner! Decided to try 2 other places and both were totally underwhelming!!

Yelp
The best bar in west chester hands down. Management, Hostesses, and bartenders are all AMAZING!!! especially Tori, Alex & Kitty

Morgan F.

Yelp
Really hit and miss. Pros: fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collards was delicious. As was the baked mac and cheese. Cocktail was tiny but delicious. Loved the aesthetic they were going for. Cons: tabletops are right next to each other separated by a 4" bar, so it's like you're literally having dinner with the table next to you and you have to choose your conversation wisely. Stage by the door took up the whole wall and was awkward. Bar wall looked somewhat empty. So the whole ambiance looked like a halfway finished restaurant with awkward seating. Jambalaya was inedible. So salty even someone who loves salt couldn't eat it. What really disappointed was the server. I generally don't care much one way or the other with servers, but I got a tiny 2-3oz cocktail that I'd been nursing and when she came to ask how food was, she cleared it without asking! What was left in the glass was relative to its tiny size, but there was still a good bit left! Not great service on a $15 cocktail. Further, we did let her know the jambalaya was inedible and she didn't even say that she'd pass the message along. So definite potential at this restaurant, but several misses.

Yelp
A sparse but semi shoplike decor greets you as you enter the bar, which is well spaced and open-sensed, yet cozy and hospitable nonetheless. A portrait of Conway Twitty, the true "Slow Hand", subtly smiles from behind the bar. A warm and welcoming feel drifts over you, typically unprecedented in a spot where one sees so much chrome and copper. There is an exquisitely comfortable upstairs space, open only on Fridays and Saturdays at this time. Magnum and BA Baracus cast a baleful eye back from decades past. Two drinks began my explorations: Rum Punch; which was very fruity and light, with a spirity accent. Delicious! Dos Besitos: lusciously fruitful with an jalapeño afterbite! Revelatory! Shift change, two different bartenders and fantastic drink consistency for my second Dos Besitos. Heavily infused with gruyere and fontina, the Ham Croquettes do not disappoint, especially with the saucing of local honey and dijon. Magnifique! The food is a bit pricey for the serving size, but so very satisfying to the palette! If you are trying to stuff the void before drinks; well, don't! Eat and drink over a long period here! Pay for pleasure, my friends! $45 for an app and 3 drinks for one fellow. Not bad, and an immensely blissful experience for my mouth! 4.5/5, with extra kudos given to the immensely amenable staff!

Yelp
I'm a city food snob. And I love love this place. Pretty much every dish is amazing. Been here twice and the price is great :) is compare this place to like vernick haha

Yelp
The service was absolutely amazing. Went here with my sister on our birthday, and our waitress Jackie made it so memorable! Would recommend 12/10

Yelp
Burger sliders are so-so Lamb is EXPENSIVE- 3 tiny pieces of lamb for $14 Just because one calls themselves tapas - doesnt mean they can nickle-dime and fleece! Blah!
